@Nitwit:
I saw lots of videos online about how Obito caused the Naruto fanbase to drop the series altogether. And I feel the more popular anime reviewers will destroyed both Oda and Rebecca's credibility as a series. I'm hoping that's not the case. lol
You know I respect people's opinions and all, I also see plenty of dumb comments but this.. this blindsided me. You know those "popular" anime reviewers, I'm not a stranger to who they are but there are very very very few who are actually credible. In fact the very reason most of them became popular in the first place is due to reviewing one series in particular at the time and that was Naruto. It also doesn't say much when reviewers are only popular when you share the opinion of the majority, the only difference is you're just brazen enough to sit behind your desk and record yourself talking. What you don't seem to understand though is that those people CHOSE One Piece, they rode that ship and will continue to ride it because it's the new 'thing'. If in fact, you say that those popular anime reviewers can affect One Piece or Oda's "credibility" as a series and author then all I can say is I dare they challenge it - though this stems from my own personal preference that to avoid the same level of… umm something as Naruto was, I wouldn't mind if One Piece continues to be "unpopular" in the West. However, I know most wants the opposite and the series deserves it but speaking from experience, a lot of those who has bashed the series before have been fans of other long-running series or victims of the 4Kids version. If any "popular" anime reviewer credible enough that they can do as much damage with actual evidence and arguments then I'd like to meet him. Oh and I assure you none of them actually know what Haki is nor do they fully appreciate (or even understand) the series as a site dedicated to it.
Sorry but it irks me that anime reviewers are getting recognition when only a very few of them are actually decent. 6 years ago I've passed seeing 1000 anime titles (then switched to manga) and I didn't go record myself giving reviews on series so a bunch of people can see it - if that brings you joy then please keep doing it and I apologize. Point is though, coming from someone who, along with his very strong deductive abilities, can pretty much see where any series is going, can pretty much name any character given a picture (series before 2009), can name any song from a series (again before 2009) AND understand Japanese diialogue without actually properly studying the language, One Piece as a series can still surprise me and make me think, as well as appreciate it's underlying messages.
Though if you're not convinced, as juvenile as this is.. I posted a simple 'game' few pages back. If any of your popular anime reviewer can answer a single one of them, I will acknowledge them (that includes their deductive abilities). Simple, no?
@_Hayato:
By the way, who here is up for a game? I was gonna post some of this down eventually but instead of the usual explanations, I figured it'd be fun as a game (either that or my definition of 'fun' is off). This will be a question and answer deal and it'll cover (exaggerated) science and/or spirituality.
Three (simple enough) questions! (Oh and these aren't jokes lol)
[Exaggerated Science]
1. Why hasn't Sanji gotten lung cancer?
[Exaggerated Science AND Spirituality]
2. This would technically only be exaggerated science but to avoid any copying (just in case) I'm gonna be adding and ask 'the purpose' to cover the spirituality. So the question is Why does Zoro and Sanji only have one eye and what's the purpose? Oh and just in case anyone is thinking it, forget the "left hand & right hand" of the King stuff, that's obvious. Also, the spiritual meaning of "the left being the shield and the right where the manifestation of Ki comes from", not that either.
[Spirituality]
3. Excluding Luffy, where does the "flaws" of the Straw Hats derived from?

@Daz:
Hody was framed as an extremely hateable, wrong, see kids this is what not to act like racist.
Whereas the Maids dialogue this week is framed as negative too- wait, no it isn't. Theres no real response to it; it just sits there, unchallenged by all other characters; Rebecca doesn't object to it, Violet doesn't object to it, it is not framed as something questionable.
Personally I don't agree myself that it's the same with Hody since he's a villain so you're right in a way. However, there's more to that message than "not what to act like" and "racism" if so, it'd be the same as Arlong. As even I think the youtube comments can tell you, it was about the fact that bias are spread without thought, that even one character who was seen as a tragic hero chose to die because he cannot find it in himself to be rid of that bias. Now try and apply that to sexism.
And sure, its character dialogue, but all dialogue is decided by Oda; It didn't just forcibly materialize out of the ether, Oda decided that the scene should include that bit of dialogue.
Come on now guys, no one said anything about missing Rebeccas horrible chainmail bikini - least of all the maid in the scene. She doesn't say "You look so much better now than in that godawful unidgnified fanservice outfit" she says, "Girls look prettier in dresses than armor". Not that specifically vile armor, armor period.
And that carries all sort of unfortunate subtext, because when and why do you actually wear armor? What does wearing armor signify about you, especially in the context of this particular arc? Well, being in armor suggests you're in dangerous situations, possibly being pro-active and attempting to solve them, such as if your whole country was suddenly on the brink of annihilation. Dainty dresses…do not imply that, and the maids line reads a lot like "see, isn't this a lot better for a girl than being out doing dangerous things?"
Of course, its possible that this really is just some lame fashion statement from the maid that Oda only thought about for one second, but the reason it truly stinks is that its attached to Rebecca, of all characters. Rebecca, whose character arc was to learn that She Should Not Try To Contribute. Sure girl you tried learning self defense, but now that theres people to take care of you you can just stop trying, oh look now Rebecca you got yourself into trouble again why don't you just do as you're told, sure you really seem determined to make a contribution, but see how not capable you are, now we have to rescue you again, see now the crisis is over, isn't it good that you don't have to miserably fail at contributing anything anymore?
And to this girl, it is now said: "Girls look better in dresses than armor!"
So no, its not about pining for the chainmail bikini.
I think we had this conversation before but remember the SBS with Sanji and his pride? Again, Oda didn't really wanna do that and I don't want to link it again.
As far as Rebecca and that page goes, let me be clearer, that handmaiden not only spouted BS but she was supposed to be a character who "doesn't seem to know any better" - not to mention, doesn't she look Disney-ish? or is it just me. Anyway, Kyros as a Prince and then dying in some far away country, now that could be foreshadowing but the point was that it was BS resulting from a lie that was chosen for her. The small flashback with Rebecca's expression and even Viola's long sigh pretty much tells you she's against it.
For the person who asked, Rebecca being fitted into a dress and not casual clothes and as well as the person who predicted she's gonna be wearing a dress by the end of the arc.. well she's gonna be a princess… and it's not like the similarity/parallel with Alabasta (Vivi preparing to give her speech) wasn't clear enough.
