Naruto and Bleach V - The Not-So-Final Frontier

I don't know why but reading the last couple of pages in this thread has made me really horny.
Luppi vs. Giselle, you know you want it.
-
 Damn, there were times where I thought Luppi was a chick. I was a naive Bleach-tard back then.
-
IDK to me it`s more like a mix of things
on one hand this topic satisfies my urges to seeing people actually calling out kubo and kishimoto`s bullshit, instead of praising them despite, well, EVERYTHING, like any other anime forum would do.
on the other hand I learned to enjoy scenes and characters I like despite the fact that their mangas became insurmountable crap. too bad they are all dead hahaha
-
wonders what everyone is talking about
reads the chapterLooks like semen-kun plans on banging zombie-chan later on. Oh, and is flower guy one of the good guys? His friends there at the end seemed like a fun bunch.

If you can get through all this, I applaud you. I skimmed it until I saw this person think Kubo did his research, and that everything makes sense and that everything about this chapter was symbolic.

what the hell did I just read
-
what the hell did I just read
A person who is so deep into Kubo's mindless Manga that he thinks Kubo researched African culture to make a point about blood and semen representing something. That's all I got. I barely read these things, but I find it hilarious that this person makes posts of this length for every bloody chapter.
-
That reminds to one crazy girl back in the day who did an extensive academic-like research about relations between characters in Project Justice (aka Rival Schools)
Which was a cheesy fighting game of the 90's.

Probably better than Bleach, and made more sense than that person about Semen and Blood.
-
:getlost: While I believe Kubo did some research for his characters, I highly doubt that there was any deeper meaning behind them. They're just for outer looks and motifs, to make his characters look less bland.

The only research he does his researching the quotes on his glass table feet. He also probably researches fashion magazines.

african? i read something about german folklores about blood and semen but I as a german have never heard of such a story

All that I know is that this person digs up stories and legends from so many cultures that I know that Kubo is not even planning it out, especially since he's admitted it so many times. I wouldn't laugh so much at that persons effort, if that was something done for chunks of chapters. This person does this every chapter, and tries to find anything that could be related to what happened. It's also bad when 90% of what's talked about has nothing to do with the actual chapter, and the story doesn't even mean anything towards what the person is claiming.
-
considering all of bleach dark skinned characters (except zommari) are basically blackface, I doubt he even knows how people from other cultures look like, let alone know jack shit about said cultures.
if anything kubo ever said happens to resemble something from non japanese folklore, it`s definitely a coincidence
hell, not even the spanish words he uses for the arrancar names and attacks are proper (still better spanish than oda tho)
-

What? I don't think any of them look like Blackface. Yourichi, Tousen, Mila Rose, Harribel
-
I`m not referring to the stereotypical caricature of coal black skinned people with big red lips.
I`m referring to the fact that several mangakas believe that having japanese characters with dark skin somehow shows diversity. Which is something even more mangakas do one way or another, thinking than changing the color schemes and hairstyle gives a completely different character as a result, specially with females.
-
Tousen was probably the only non offensive clearly black character in Bleach.
Also Dirty Boots chick wasn't black-facey. I actually liked her design from what I remember. -
Wait, what?
What's so offensive about the black people in Bleach? Zommari I might understand but Barragan, Yoruichi, Harribel?
-
Looking away for one second and suddenly black people in bleach
-
Wait, what?

Hmmm. Yoroichi, Harribel I think just read as being dark skinned. Not necessarily black.
Barragan I didn't think was supposed to be black at all. I assumed he was just kinda tanned.
They didn't really have facial features that make think they were supposed to be viewed that way at least. Although thinking about Yoroichi I am reminded we know basically nothing about her. She's super old. She can turn into a cat. And we've never seen her sword?
-
Well, hopefully we can avoid a discussion about who's black or not in Bleach.
As for Yoruichi as far as I can google this is the best look we've had of her sword and it's only the handle.
! But maybe my google skills aren't so strong.
-
IIRC Yammy referred to yoruichi as a black woman.
And there are characters that are the opposite: I see them and expect them to happen to be dark skinned/non japanese due to their features, but they happen to as light skinned as most of the cast, like Love (the vizard)
-
A true* 4th level secret of Kubo's is that Tosen's real agenda was that he thought Soul Society was unfair because only Japanese people are allowed in.
-
I think Kubo does a pretty good job with his black characters at least in the art department. Personalities may be w/e but from a drawing perspective Kubo's art style allows him to do things like draw full lips without them coming off like cartoonish blackface. Oda's artstyle is less complimentary aokiji aside. People bring up Zommari like there's something offensive about the way he looks but I don't really see that. The part where he's yelling like a maniac he looked a bit wild but in most of his page time he's a pretty normal looking guy.

http://bleach.wikia.com/wiki/Ōetsu_Nimaiya
http://bleach.wikia.com/wiki/Yammy_Llargo
http://bleach.wikia.com/wiki/Love_AikawaYeah I'll give props to Kubo on that front. I feel like most manga, not just OP, fall into caricature territory when it comes to drawing black people but Kubo gets an A grade from me.
that being said I'm pretty sure Kubo did no research at all on anything ever.
-
Anyone consider that Harribel might be going Ganguro? I also think Kubo's "black" characters are pretty good design-wise, nothing that looks blatantly racist. I feel like people are just trying to hard to be offended these days.
-
Oda's artstyle is less complimentary aokiji aside.
….Aokiji is based off a Japanese actor.
-

That's why I said aside. Are you saying he's not black? Cause I've always seen him as a black character that he based off a japanese guy, not as a dark skinned japanese guy with nappy hair.
-
oda doesn´t have a single black character. and there is only one dark skinned (in the manga) character I can remember, and that would be miss Monday
he gives all his characters the same skintone unless they are fishman. and most of his male characters are cartoonish
I don´t think it´s a matter of people getting offended. I see it mostly as a matter of representation.

No. He's not black.

oda doesn´t have a single black character.
Edit: I fucked up and posted Miss Monday because I was reading the post lol. Here's the actual image of the guy I was going for

So black people won't be offended if they are not represented in a Japanese manga right?

Mr.1 was also darker skinned/ tanned. I never understood arguing about a specific series that lacked representation. I understand when a media as a whole lacks it, but going to a series and picking on it just because it lacks representation seems silly. Now if characters representing certain races/genders/sexuality are represented and are portrayed terribly and it's offensive, and it's not trying to make a point about it, I can see that.
-
Kubo is definitely not the worst when it comes to that particular type of character at least. It does irritate me on some levels. But like I said, I liked Tousen…he was the only bishy one...Untill he turned into a bug. I once upon a time wanted to cosplay as Yoroichi. And I've forgotten about the majority of the others.
But he's yet to reach the offense with his designs I felt over Choco Love.
Also Oda had that human bomb guy that got taken out by Luffy and Zoro randomly in Whiskey Peak.
-
@The:

In the anime. In the manga he gets the same flesh tones as everyone else. Same with all the characters.
Oda hasn't gone out of his way to depict a darker skin tone on anyone, by adding either ziptone or using different watercolors in the spreads. Any dark skinned characters are the anime interpretation… which isn't necesarilly Oda's. I figure its a time issue more than anything else.
-
TIL everyone in One Piece belongs to some sort of homogenous race.
Except those dirty fishmen.
-
He's got thick lips, nappy hair, and dark skin. If i'm going by most manga japanese people don't have lips at all. Now you're telling me he's not black. and that Daz bones isn't black. I don't believe it.
But he's yet to reach the offense with his designs I felt over Choco Love.
http://i.imgur.com/reVgzvz.gifI love SK to death but yeah. That was.. that was questionable.
-
In a world filled with giants, fish people, dwarves, robots, and colorful animals…I'm pretty sure Oda doesn't really care about racial characteristics within his human characters (and even when he does, the "racial" qualities are very obvious like his Japanese/Wano characters). The big lips thing is done more out of design rather than...trying to depict a race.
MMmmm....unlike Kubo. Mmmmmm~
excuse me, I need tissues.

My mistake then. I prefer him spending time on different designs then having some characters shaded and others not. He could probably do both, but he's already so stressed from doing it that it's better that he doesn't have to worry about it.
-
You give a character ziptone as part of their design, and that character very quickly become s a pain in the ass because they have that extra step on them EVERY TIME they show up. Not a big deal once or twice, but if they appear hundreds of times? Thousands?
It adds up fast.
(This doesn't stop Oda from doing things like giving Franky Hawaiian shirts… but thats still part of the drawing stage.)
Also why Shanks is the only character to have ziptone hair... that was probably a carry over from Oda interning on Kenshin... and by the time we got to Nami just a few chapters later Oda had already decided that was not a step he wanted to deal with regularly... but he still does it for Shanks when he shows up once every five years cause its part of it now.

It will only become a problem when Shanks appears for a long period of time, basically the end of the series. Gotta say, I wait for the day we see Shanks true abilities, because that will be awesome.
-
He doesn´t need sto give him a dark skin tone on every single panel, but he didn´t either in any colorspread -
You guys are blowing my mind right now.

Bleach and One Piece 1 - Hey, Is He Black?

Yeah I think this got really off topic.
Back on topic: if we got luppi back can we get nnoitra too? k thx

As far as I'm concerned, if you can bring back a guy whose entire torso was blown to bits, everyone is fair game.
"Who said that the espada only include natural numbers?
Nega Yammy and the Nega-spada make their appearance!" -
Yammy's dog should reappear and use his resurreccion to fuck some Sternritter up.
-
Just think, Kubo could revive the whole Espada if he wanted to.
