@RobZilla:
I assumed that all Gladiators (in house or visiting) had to adhere to it. (the weight limit)
Jeet, Hack and Cavendish all wore their own, normal clothes with no armour. That was their choice. They still competed within the parameters set.
Diamante is an exception to the rule because his regular clothes essentially ARE armour (when de-flagged).
I think you're attributing much too much importance to something that was brought up to make a Luffy-in-armor gag, and is a broken concept anyway by the presence of Hajrudin.
The reason I brought up the other contestants was to show that there was no "rule" that you had to be half-naked in the coliseum in order to adhere to the weight limit. I'm not saying prisoner gladiators have acess to a full wardrobe, but the armory has breastplates, and theres no rules against them. Rebecca could've worn one and weighed less than Tank Lepantos Mace.
To me, the main issue of using the weight limit as an explanation for Rebeccas outfit is:
Lets say Rebecca had worn the first gladiator costume I showed in my previous post. Would anyone ever have objected that her outfit was nonsensical due to the weight limit, and she should logically be wearing a bikini? I'm guessing no.
@RobZilla:
Tbh, Rebecca wearing enough armour to protect her vital organs,
…What vital organs are protected by covering your crotch and half your boobs? Certainly not your heart, lungs, liver or guts, thats for sure. Her only real protection is her helmet.
@RobZilla:
but little enough to play into her agile style of combat makes perfect sense.
The link between Rebeccas outfit and her fighting style has not been established in canon. You could argue its obvious that less clothing gives gives her added flexibility…but clothes are as restrictive as Oda wants/needs them to be- i.e. usually not very. Sanji, and almost the entire CP9, are accomplished speed-based martial artists who fight wearing snazzy suits and shoes with no penalty for that whatsoever.
Again, lets pretend Rebecca wore a non-fanservice outfit. Would anyone ever have objected that her outfit was nonsensical due to her fighting, and she should logically be wearing a bikini? I'm guessing no.
@Hiso:
I think that's possible. Dofla said that the gladiator battles are just to satisfy the bloodlust of the audience… and historically, that is correct. Gladiators were more likely to get a mild judgement by the audience if they spilled a lot of blood (even their own was okay). Thus why they didn't have "proper" armor. However, that's why gladiators also used to be quite overweight as well (you can receive more wounds without dying, since your vital organs are well protected).
Again, the manga never states this- and if Doflamingo forced "unprotectedness" on the prisoner gladiators to increase the chances of them dying, you'd think that would come up as a dramatic point. Oda could have introduced the issue with extreme ease by making not a weight-limit restriction, but an armor restriction. Small change, big difference in intent and effect.
Doflamingo being the one who directly mandates that a 16 year old girl MUST wear an incredibly skimpy, nonprotective outfit for her Coliseum battles would have been an extremely effective way of giving himhighly tangible asshole points tied to a specific character.
I can see the potential quite clearly; just picture the jeering crowd of the Coliseum going
"I hope Rebecca gets it today!"
"Yeah! I'll miss looking at her cute outfit though, hergherghhergh"
"Ooohoho, I hear the King is forcing her to wear it to punish her for the sins of her father!"
"Man, our king is such a great guy, hergherghergh drools"
Didn't happen though. At most some of the other contestants said she had a cute face. So I really don't see much evidence declaring that Rebecca is forced into the getup against her will.
@Hiso:
As much as I cringed at Rebecca's armor, it's supports what gladiator battles are about. Show skin, show blood, the audience loves you.
Thats not what Rebeccas actions in the Coliseum was about though?
I know you guys probably think I'm overthinking this, but my thinking is actually pretty simple. I just asked myself: when designing Rebecca, did Oda
-Figure that since he wanted a female gladiator with a speed-based fighting style, he logically had no choice but to put her in a chainmail bikini, or
-Just want to draw a cute 16 year old in a sexy outfit?
AAAAANYWAY to get back on topic: I hope Luffy doesn't get a last minute power infusion at the finale, in order to be the of relevant strength; Like he unlocks the Power of D transformation, or a dying Shanks gives him his haki, or he absorbs the DF powers of all his friends through the power of being Rogers reincarnation or something.
