"Officer is accused"
Stopped reading there.
Yeah, when you're arguing a subject without the willingness to engage it, what you're really doing is wasting our time.
Let's move on, folks, we've got election results to cry over!

Maybe you should use better exemples. The guy's accused of being biased, tell me what are your brilliant conclusions from this case alone.

You're being downright offensive.
She really isn't. As people in this very thread explained to garypotter not three pages back, people who think that casually thrown-around terms like "SJW" and "agenda" have any legitimacy at all- much less in a greater geopolitical discussion- are severely myopic/uninformed/sheltered/what have you.
Take their wisdom and learn from it.
As you are the one who's actually being offensive, with thinly-veiled transphobia and ignorant disregard for LGBT people/issues, please tone it down.

Yeah, I know she wasn't. And I wasn't trying to legitimate or demean anything by using the term "SJW", it certainly wasn't central in my sentence. This is cherry picking.

No, I'm not, but I can assure you that I won't suddenly start being transphobic.

This is my favorite part of election years (besides laughing at libertarians); Europeans who don't comprehend shit about anything in America.

Just a quick question: what happens if you have a news story you want to share, but its not in english?
Occasionaly I encounter something I'd like to discuss, but 99% of the time its in the wrong language.

To be frank, it probably won't be discussed unless you provide a pretty good summary of it, depending on who's reading it. Not because we don't care of course but just the language barrier in general

It's part of your central narrative, which is implying that our social issues don't matter and are the products of overactive imaginations or something.
I didn't actually butt in to argue with you. What I meant to say was, "Stop it."
…Oh. Someone took care of him. Nice.

Hmmm, we seem to have a problem with midterms . . . .

I'm not denying that, I just think it's sad that conservatives would make such a big fuss over abortion. That's why I think America's bat shit insane.
Where are you from exactly?
We share this malady with parts of Southern Europe + Ireland.Shouldn't the law prevent that retarded shit ? It makes no sense. That's indeed a relevant issue, unlike gay marriage for exemple.
Yes inclusion in law and basic rights and respect are totally irrelevant.
By the way do you have any idea how much cash is made by allowing gays to marry? If I'm to appeal to your economic robot logic?Roma, Arabs, and Blacks mostly. My point was precisely that their issues are tied into economics.
Via issues tied into discrimination, especially the Roma I imagine.
Funny that in spite of Islamophobia galore American Arabs actually don't really have economic problems of note, they're even the only thing breathing life into the Detroit metro area, quite a feat. American-Roma aren't really even that badly off where they are (mostly the Northwest for some reason).wut
Other people being treated like crap doesn't seem to concern you as relevant to your whole nation. But it's just dollar bills to you isn't it.
Some issues have to be fixed so that they'll get their emancipation through economic power. Stopping the war on drugs, for exemple. But that's not gonna stop the black market completely. So what, we forgive all the criminals who happen to be part of minorites to make them feel better ?
The amount of young black guys in jail for extremely minor drug crimes is really really high. Major sentences as well.
What's even cooler is the jail time often makes them into actual dangerous criminals rather than just doing the thing that tons of suburban whites do too but rarely get busted on (or sentenced badly on if they are). This isn't some niche issue you can throw a tumblr comment at either, the previous Attourney General was talking about it.That won't solve anything. Give them jobs and stop parking them in ghettos.
No one gets parked in ghettos.
They're the parts of cities that are falling apart, and therefore cheap. Of course once gotten into one gets trapped in the cycle of poverty right and quick. How comes chinese communities are usually better economically organized and less concerned by criminality ?
Because the Chinese weren't subjected to centuries of severe limitations to their economic and human rights including literal ownership by others.
It's the same reason African immigrants are in like literally the opposite economic situation as the descendents of the slaves.
Of course there's much poorer Chinese than you seem to think, and used to be just as poor and crime infested. But ultimately with far less in their way, just like the Italians and Irish.
Funny though because Southern Italy is a run down ghetto of place with mafia all over, which is where Italian Americans overwhelmingly come from.
So is it Southern Italian culture or racial inferiority or whatever? When in one place they're just a bunch of middle to upper class part of the mainstream, and the place they came from they're the looked down upon poorer part of the indigenous population? Which are we talking here? Why are Jews statistically over represented in certain fields ?
Jews did the crime and poverty thing too at first bub. You know before that they were shit dirt poor in Russia right?
They got mainstreamed over here though, like Southern Italians. It's a golden social ticket.
If we put you in a time machine and took you back to the US of 100 years you would be saying all this about Jews and the rest too.Precisely, there's a sick gap between real issues and what's commonly debated. At least in my country and from I hear from american news sources.
Your mystery country of Mysteria! We shall never know where!
We have similar issues and some of them come directly from rich "intellectuals" who are passionate about american "progressivism" (social and economical alike)
American progressivism? What on earth do you think that is lol.
However, here we don't seriously talk about banning abortion, about the fat acceptance movement,
Nobody talks about fat acceptance in the US except people on the internet, just like France. lol at your image of us
I know these aren't central topics in the USA, but they've definitely got less echo here.
Wow you really have no idea what is internet and what is actual mainstream American discourse.
Do you imagine we put cat macros on highway billboards?I'm talking about France, by the way. I know it's coming our way, though, simply with some delay, just like everything that exists in the USA.
lol you talk about the US like Russia talks about you.
By the way, aren't votes basically bought, in the USA ?
lolll

I am kind of curious where the 31-59 bracket falls, since that's what I'm now in, but… yeah, that is a weird cycle.
-
Let's face it, the mid-term elections aren't nearly as exciting as Presidential elections. That sadly isn't going to get a lot of young voters in the booths.
-
48.3% to 46.9% with 99% reported in.

Just crazy, I'll never be able to wrap my head around an actual criminal being elected governor of a state not once but twice with an agenda seemingly geared towards fucking it over.
--- Update From New Post Merge ---
Pleasantly surprised to see Coakley leading in my state, if only barely. The press around her hasn't been very positive, deservedly so in some ways, but I really can't stand Baker.
Try president .

They'd be the rest of the 100%.
So roughly 59% in 2006/2008, 56% in 2010/2012, and 51% in 2014.

Generation X is like…so totally over this election thing.

So what happens now for you guys for the next 2 years?
I can't understand the concept of having a political leader in power but both sides of the house as the opposition. Do you think Obama is just going to say screw it and sign whatever the Republicans throw across his desk to show Americans why voting is important?

Executive Action .

If he doesn't though?
I mean right now here in Australia we have a moron in charge who is basically trying his hardest to destroy the country - our Dollar has tanked and deficit increased. It's certainly taught a lot of people why you actually vote sensibly.
Obama has the perfect out - The Bills that pass both houses just need his signature 2 years of punshing legislation enacted with him just going on record as saying it's what the people voted for as its what the representatives are passing would make people give a damn. It's working here with the state elections and if it continues it will have them soundly voted out in the next 3 years.

That's like letting the arsonist throw gasoline all over the house and instead of mopping it up as would be sensible you finish the job by throwing a lighter on the fire.
Not to compare Republicans to arsonists or saying they're trying to burn the place down of course…

But you could then have the Dems go into the next election on Voting reform to change the way you Vote and are represented in the USA - after 2 years of having a Lame Duck session you'd have people really angry enough to do it just for the assurance they could actually change the status quo.

Or the president and by extension his party will be blamed for allowing legislation through that he knew was not any good. If things go to shit under your watch…well...it's under your watch. People are going to blame the president for these things especially if he purposefully lets the shit hit the fan just to prove a point.

I see your point - I mean he is stuck in a rough spot - if he doesn't sign off on bills he'll be blamed for ignoring the will of the people - if he does he'll be blamed for allowing bad legislation through.
Jeeze he'd actually be better off standing down almost. -

Jeeze he'd actually be better off standing down almost.Executive action. He can get some good things done by use of his executive powers like passing a measure of immigration reform. Nothing in comparison to a real immigration reform bill that has to be passed by the House and the Senate (in other words Congress) and signed off by the president, but you take what you can get.

Me and mine are in a pretty bad place to have say healthcare reform unreformed. I mean I can partly trust the state government to do right by me in that department, but I'm pretty sure our well run local healthcare stuff is still at the behest and funding of the national reforms at the moment. So yeah, I'd like to not have to worry about that.

Vote now and receive Obamanite to evolve him into Mega Obamasnow*
-
The seeming impenetrability of our political process scares off a bunch of young liberals who idealistically want to live through some perfect victory where a lone warrior takes on the corrupt system and wins by the pure force of justice. That was the attitude going around when Obama was first running, like if we elected this dude, especially after Bush, we would start moving away from being a militaristic jock police state instead of more towards it and maybe racism would be over. First black president is still a pretty big victory when you think about it, not that Obama ever did much to make that matter. But when it's a bunch of small battles that don't seem to have big stakes? No liberal followthrough. Maybe people just get lazy when they think that the mysterious forces of justice will resolve everything for the better of the world. That doesn't happen, though, because justice is a construct that comes from the people and the most active people get to define and impose it.

Hey guys, remember the episode in The simpsons where Bart faced off against Martin in an election but lost cause everyone forgot to vote? It's a Phenomenon that happens not only in USA but everywhere. Here in México we suffered the same in past presidential elections. We thought we would be supported by the generation raised by the one that suffered the Tlatelolco Massacre (Another students massacre, huh that's a theme of my poor country) and the ones that lived it itself among other people that we really, really thought wanted a change and not go back to the old order. Well, it didn't happened. The abstentionism was high again and the people that wanted the old order DID vote and…well, sigh.
What i think is that apathy is a factor in this and how it affects people that aren't conservatives. They just simply don't vote and there's a fuckload of reasons they can tell you about it: They don't believe in the system, what the government does doesn't affect them (yes, they really say that) or my hard work isn't hindered by the political class. At the end of the day the system takes into account votes, not rally, protestets, RT's and images shared through facebook.
And yeah, in regards to Satsuki's link Obama was (at least in the eyes of a foreigner) really charismatic. Well, that and the fact that Palin seems like a product of thousand years in-breeding and Mc Cain looks like that old guy at ChuckE Cheese that is by himself and makes you really nervous. But i don't know about particular cases and i'm just scratching the surface, i guess.
(This is an uninformed view of USA so don't get too mad at me if i'm saying stupid things...please?)
-
It's a self-fulfilling prophecy really.
Some people don't vote so politicians who don't represent their interests get elected, which they blame on the system not working.
-

My impression is that people often get disheartened that the system changes people so that they become a part of the machine so that the very abrupt and noticeable change they want doesn't happen, but then they don't really look at the system as a whole and see it's pretty damn difficult to get anything done and that they need to keep pushing at it if they want something done over time.
So elect someone in the executive office because that's cool and in charge but congress, another super legit branch will always be a cesspool, in their minds. Of course, the democrats this time around just in general didn't push hard at all and made a ton of mistakes, but this inherent thinking in young liberals does have a good amount of impact by causing a lack of impact.
-
Basically. Meanwhile, the old conservatives seem to understand that you can make ridiculous things happen by winning all of the small battles and working your way up. It is incredibly sad, but even more impressive that some states require the teaching of creationism alongside evolution in 2014, just because conservative control of the school boards is so strong.
-
Another slight influence may be that it seems like people from the older generation were taught much better the importance of voting while the younger generation jokes about how a single vote means crap.

@Monkey:

Like Sarfallet said, they're both important to telecommunication. Optical signal processors are basically how we communicate wirelessly with anything (or even still using wires in the case of fiber optics). It's all optical, meaning that the information is contained in some electromagnetic waves. These waves are sent in a series of pulses that convey information kind of like an ultrafast morse code. Optical signal processors read those and help turn them into something useful for our machines. Optical buffers store that information without processing it, to let the circuitry work, since it can't take in everything simultaneously.

I can't understand the concept of having a political leader in power but both sides of the house as the opposition. Do you think Obama is just going to say screw it and sign whatever the Republicans throw across his desk to show Americans why voting is important?
Basically, they'll be able to get paperwork to the final stage… but Obama can then veto it (or sit on it), sending stuff back, at which point they will need a much larger majority to do it. I think it's 50 percent to get it through once, and 66% in both houses after a veto. They can force some stuff through to Obama's desk and put pressure on him, but not everything, they don't quite have the sheer overwhelming numbers for pushing stuff without his support... they'd need 15 more Republicans in the house and another 40 in the Senate to reach a 2/3 unblockable margin.
They'll presumably pick battles instead of blowing their clout on minor stuff.
I assume the Affordable Health Care Act is going to be the main target. Again. Even though its now had time to actually take root and is helping million of citizens... Republican voters even. So even that its probably too late for them to truly mess with anymore.
Plus, they don' want to do anything TOO crazy, presidential election in just 2 years after all, and they don't have any amazing candidates yet. (Democrats seem to have settled on Hillary... but I think her age at 70 might be a problem.)
-

I'm assuming that once this becomes a real thing this won't be something that most of us Americans will benefit from.

Well, it's just an experiment so it won't necessarily become "a real thing" at all. I just thought it was a funny story. :)
…but if it does find a practical application it will benefit everyone who use telecommunications and the world at large.
