Wondering who to vote for tomorrow? Pandaman has the answer!
!
When I first joined this forum, the character battle of 2010 was underway and I quickly posted enough that I was allowed to vote. That year, there were hundreds of votes for each round. Any idea why the numbers have went down so much since then? (Jerk Disease/Monkey King scaring off bad posters lol? Marineford more popular than post-time skip?) Just curious

Well, fisherman island was boring…but I also remember that time.
I guess that this forums suffered a improvement, or maybe the high number of votes was work of those "double accounts" ?
We had about twice or thrice the amount of users visiting daily during the war, so yes, that is pretty much the correct answer. There may have been other factors affecting the popularity of the tournament at the time, but the Marineford war was, to date, the running arc that gathered the most attention that then spread fairly evenly throughout the entire forum.
This year's tournament has had quite a number of surprises in store so far, but the activity sure went down; even compared to last year's first round. Sure, quality over quantity but I wouldn't mind seeing a bit more voters around.
Perhaps we could "advertise" the tournment in other threads (except the manga one)?
Just an idea.
So far it's been only disappointment after disappointment… Oh well, maybe Moria and Magellan still have a chance.
Who am I kidding this tournament is doomed!
To be honest, the loss of users is normal for forums. It can be explained by following reasons:
The Tournament is one good reason to join, but it is far too frequent, has little new improvements (or just changes) for oldtimers, and has non one-piece related filler matches (Man it was cooler to vote over best hads or the best skulls than to vote over 3 or 4 random non one-piece manga chars. This year I liked the Doflamingo tournament, but in the end it was just filler. If you had made such tournaments for every arc (Just the blocks and the winners facing each other) you could have taken part nearly every char in one piece with the winners being selected for this tournament. You do an amazing job, but always the same procedure becomes kinda boring.
You're suggesting that one reason the forum has become less popular because the character tournament has become repetitive? It's a thought, I suppose.

The only reason any manga-specific forum is ever popular is due to how well the current arc is running.
The tournaments on this forum are far too repetitive for me to consistently participate in. I participated in the 2010 one, didn't care about the 2011 or 2012, saw an ad for the 2013 one, but then noticed that there were two 2013 tournaments. Keep it to one a year and avoid these "filler-tournaments" only 20 users find fun.
^We don't usually have "two" tournaments, this year simply gave all the new characters a chance to succeed. And if people saw different/new characters in the matches, wouldn't be less repetitive?

It's still repetitive in that there's an extra tournament to worry about. The new characters should participate in the original tournament so we can see how they match up with the ones that have been in the game longer. Rushing to make a new tournament because Vergo and Monet look cool and not wanting to wait for the real-deal is a hassle for everyone.
A bigger hassle would have been the sheer number of one-note characters that would have flooded the Prelims this year; because of the current manga storyline. The entire point of the DoFlamingo Invitational was give all those new Dressrosa characters a chance to shine without having to take spots away from more established characters.
it seems that this year's tournament somewhat lacks spirit. A shame, some people are still doing fine campaining, nevertheless.
I don't know what people are talking about with this lack of spirit thing/repetitive thing. We've got a slightly different crew of characters this year than in past years and while it's missing some old favorites like Roger and Dragon and Makino and Tashigi, it makes up for it by having a slightly different host of guys than usual.
Already, BELLAMY and PERONA of all people are in the Top 32 for the first time, as are Iceburg and Tyrannosaurus and… Kuzan for only the second time (in recent memory, not counting the 05/06 tourney)
Add to that guaranteed new faces like Brownbeard or Fujitora, and possibly/probably Caesar Clown (much as I love Shakky, I'm predicting it's Caesar's match), and you've got some interesting new guys to shake up the monotony.
On the subject of monotony, here's a fun fact: NO TOURNAMENT SINCE AT LEAST 09 HAS HAD ANY OF THE PRIOR YEAR'S SEMIFINALISTS REACH THAT SAME HEIGHT.
That was Bon Clay, Rayleigh, Crocodile, and Law. Only Crocodile is a safe bet for making Round 2 (and Bon arguably if you're gonna underestimate Nami), so off the bat we may very well see an entirely different Final 4 from the outset.
Add to the that the very exciting matches about to come (Doflamingo vs. Law, Nami vs. Bon, Bellemere vs. Mr. 3, Sanji vs. Chopper, Franky vs. Usopp, Luffy vs. Jimbei, Ace vs. Akainu, Crocodile vs. Smoker, Rayleigh vs. Noland, Monet vs. Hattori, Buggy vs. Hiruluk) and I'd say it's just a matter of match order. We haven't really seen the hardcore camps come out to play because we've got a few mid-carders up first.
If everyone campaigns their hardest, we'll have some fun matches, I'm sure. It's hard to recapture magic like Buggy vs. Otohime or Makino vs. Kizaru or even last year's Bon Clay vs. Croc and Luffy vs. Law and perennial favorite Zoro vs. Sanji, but that's up to the people playing at home. We staffers only deal the cards. It's up to the voters to play them. :)
This forums just as active as it was on 08 and 09. The problem is Marineford was an arc that bloomed One Piece popularity, but in other forums. You have Luffy forums, and then you have Millineum forums, that have quote the few one piece posters, and then you have Narutofan, that has had an increase in One Piece fans and things.
Many people in honesty use this forum, for spoilers, but its fun cause I know some weeks we have 500+ views on some occasions. Marineford was that reason that one iece bloomed on the western population. This forum, I think is doing just fine, maybe a few more fix ups and advertisements, but its fine.
Agree with Supernova. Don't see why people are complaining about the tournament being too repetitive when instead we should be appreciative of the fact that a group of people give away their own time so we can enjoy such an event at least once a year. Because when you get to numbers, we have what, around 150 voting daily? That may be lower than before, but it's still not bad.
I for one am glad I can count each day on there being an awesome match, and even if it's a remarkably boring one someone arrives with hilarious campaigns and makes my day. For example, I never imagined caring in any way about Brownbeard, and then hilarious campaigns happened out of nowhere and now he's in the first round. And that's just one thing from this tournament.
Hey, don't get me wrong. These things are fun. I appreciate all of the work that goes into these tournaments. They're competitive and we all want our favorite characters to win. And I understand what you mean, Ubiq.
I am just explaining why I personally didn't participate year-after-year despite joining in 2009. Eventually the tournaments will maintain a higher participation rate with OP's growing popularity and that's all that matters besides the arc.
Actually, statistically, activity here IS way down from 09 and 10. 1400 new members joined in 2009 and 1500 new members joined in 2010. Last year? Barely over 400. When you consider that many people join just to vote in the tournament and never do anythng beyond gaining that priviledge, it puts some numbers to things quite nicely.
It was natural to have 700 or 800 voters in 2010 because of the sheer number of members. Compare to 2012 where we had just over a quarter of the userbase.
IMO, I like smaller voter pools because the number of campaigners has not really changed, so the number of active voters is a much stronger percentage than past tournaments where 500 lurkers dictated the febb and flow of the tournament.
I'm just stopping by this thread to say that, personally, I don't find the Tournaments repetitive (and/or boring). Of course I'm still a fairly new member on this forum, so I haven't actively participated in many Tournaments, but I honestly think I would still enjoy this thing year after year - even if no changes would be made to the Tournament.
See that what happens(site down) when Arlong loses.:ninja:

I really shouldn't allow myself to be forced into week long hiatusi.
Gutted.
Also is there a reason the Law match is being delayed…?
I-Is is because...
oh you guys.

Actually, it's because of the recent forum downtime. The mods were only able to extend the current match by intervals of days, so….Wiper vs. Kuma gets an extra day.
this might seriously screw me up for Nami's match :X
I didn't even realize.
I thought last night that it wasn't working cause of peeps scrambling to see spoilers.
Only for me to see no spoilers.
No one told me there was a break.

Well, I'm glad to see you anyway. This next match wouldn't be the same otherwise. And I'm still undecided as to whom to vote for.

Don't let them sway you! Join the anti-Lawfare! We have cookies!

disclaimer: i don't condone anti-campaigning, the Lawfare team has pretty amazing campaigns
That's why we have to use other means to lure in potential voters. 'Cause Warp and Lef are bound to blow us away with their campaigning.

Yes. Fun, drama, my random jokes (nobody gets them), we have it all.
…
All they say is propaganda and manipulation. Except of the part where I'm awesome. That one is true:ninja:

Bribery?
@Rules:
- Vote buying with physical property or cash is strictly prohibited. Things that are collectively for the community; like, say, offering to draw a picture if somebody wins, is okay. Offering manga volumes isn't.
Back to the drawing board, then! (^no pun intended)
Haha, I'm enjoying this. I hope the actual match proves to live up to this fun. I guess I'll see how the match is going, then join one side or the other. After all, I'd love to campaign for Law and Dofla.
Donalgar Lawflamingo.

Now, when lurkers are scared away, we can settle match in traditional debate.
Thats Mokiji level combination. (I miss Mokiji, it went so eerily relevant)

Also, Makinobeard.
Also, Makinobeard.
Makinobeard is ultimate fusion, being half-dragon, half-god and half-beard.

Fufufu… yeah, just like that. Keep making promises and once you're unable to keep them and disappoint PE, me and DD will be there to comfort her (okay that sounds so wrong lol)… fufufu

being three halves (one and half) means it is pretty much overloaded.
