I haven't seen the -dono honorific used since I read Rurouni Kenshin. I wonder if Vergo has a devil fruit or not. I kind of hope not as it seems everyone has one recently.
Chapter 680: "Captain of the Marine's G-5, Kichiku no Vergo"

I don't mind that Tashigi lost again to someone far stronger than her, but was it really necessary to include this panel:
Save us, Smoker-San!!!
Really?
This is what Smoker would tell her.

I must say that this chapter kinda disappointed me, with the Vergo and Tashigi part.
But first, I did enjoy the beginning with Brownbeard carrying everyone, especially with Zoro and Kinemon both basicially saying that were too lazy to run anymore. You're awesome BB, you should be a taxi more often!
Then we get to Vergo attacking Marines. Well, it's good to see that he's strong without showcasing some DF power right any (good ol' Shigan), so I hope he doesn't have one. And Tashigi was great, trying to stop them from getting near the hostile G-5 leader. But…..did Oda really have to make him defeat Tashigi with one blow? Fine, he wanted to show that Vergo is a threat, but why must she be made so helpless?
And then Sanji comes in the picture to save her. I'm fine with that, Sanji being serious and kicking ass is something I enjoy, but why him? Why not someone on the crew that hasn't had many fights, like Brook? Or Nami? Hell, it should've been Smoker!
Then again, Smoker's with Luffy, and both of them found Caesar.....well, I wouldn't mind if he helps Luffy take down the scientist, and it would certainly give him some credibility again.....but I'm still disappointed with Tashigi being defeated like that. :<
-
Sanji VS Vergo will be interesting to see now the Marines will have a reason to increase his bounty if he wins
-
Sanji's entrance was awesome but smoker will end up fighting/defeating vergo himself. I really hope oda doesn't have sanji beaten to achieve this but instead interrupts the fight because of the gas.
-
It's chapters like this where waiting for all the emotional build-up and setting up the characters pays off.
Awesome. -
I like how the spoon flew off vergos face when sanji kicked him
-
I enjoyed this chapter for the Brownbus and crew being lazy lol.
Tashigi is so inconsistent. I'm assuming she got 1-HKO because she was demoralized after knowing about Vergo's betrayal and seeing more of her men being taken down by someone they trusted.
I was really surprised that Vergo knows at least Shigan. I hadn't expected other characters past Water7 to be able to use those abilities. Pleasantly surprised.

Momonga and another vice-admiral used those techniques on Luffy during the War.
-
!
This is what I thought when Sanji made his entrance
-
Momonga and another vice-admiral used those techniques on Luffy during the War.
I barely remember the war lol. I breezed through it. It was my least favorite arc :ninja:.

Only complaint: Why the eff does everyone seem to know CP9's moves. It makes CP9 seem way less special.
Well, it would be silly for the WG to just have their secret organization use such powerful fighting techniques.
-
Vergo joined Doflamingo and turned evil to save his little sister, anyone?
-
After a 2 year time skip to train and some of you have doubts in Sanji not being able to handle a VA…if he can't even handle a VA noa...what good is he for the up coming yonkou battle
or admiral? I honestly think he's going to win. At first I had:wub: the same "he'll lose" reaction but 3 seconds later I realize that this is to show that he's on par with an upper level vice admiral (but not the same as Garp, we all know he's in a class of his own).
TEAM SANJI! I always like his fights the least but I hope this is going to be a good one.
Also, when did Luffy get lit on fire so much?
Final also, WTF TASHIGI? Why the frell does Oda make the women so weak? She's had TWO YEARS, TWO, in the New World. Harsher environment should mean she got REALLY strong. URGHHHHH.

since Impel Down, one of the levels was hella HOT, and luffy suffered a lot I guess ^^

I don't think Sanji vs Vergo will happen, because Sanji shouldn't be beaten right now, and having him beat Vergo would let nothing to Smoker/Tashigi. I think that the gas will force them to escape each their own way and Vergo going back to CC (angry !) will find Smoker. Sanji will take care of Tashigi and the G5.
The dragon should be tamed real quick as the samurai is expert in fire and Zoro already cut the big one in one blow.
-
I don't know why people think Sanji is going to beat Vergo. I think it's obvious he's going to lose. He'll put up a good fight no doubt, but do you really think Sanji is going to beat the guy who beat Law pretty easily and is Smoker's boss? Maybe if someone else helps him out, definitely not by himself.

Hugely disappointed with this chapter. Tashigi loses quickly, I can handle that. Then Sanji to the rescue! I can handle that to. But it looks like Sanji will actually defeat Vergo (I really hope not) and not Smoker :(
Other than that, the chapter was amazing, but nothing can really make up for no Smoker v Vergo :/
Also, the 'smaller ones'? (dragons) So there are more? If so, perhaps some fighting dragons soon?
Oh, and Kichiku means demon, right? I mean, I know they trasnlate badly and all, but not bothering to translate half the chapter title is annoying
-

It's not "the women", it's Tashigi. She isn't the only female character in the series, you know, but she is one of the few characters in general to lose so much. Most of female characters are sort of in the middle, not too weak, but not too powerful.

He had Law's heart…...i.e. it was a VERY hadicapped "fight" if we can call it that. And Smoker has said that rank in marines doesn't equate strength. Smoker's boss could be weaker than Smoker. Just like Garp was below admiral but could be argued that he was on par with one.

Nami and Robin. Robin is midtier and Nami is least powerful. But still compared to the rest of the characters, weaksauce. Only Big Mam is powerful. I know it's a shonen manga, but throw me a f*ing bone here Oda and give a slightly bigger representation of women. (i'm a guy by the way, not that it matters).
-
All of those build-up chapters paid off! This is the best chapter in a long time.
One day Tashigi is just going to kick ass, but it is not this day.

Yes, that is why I'm a little disappointed. I mean, getting punched by a monster like Vergo isn't that unexpected, but oh god, that cry for help.
I honestly can't imagine Oda making a male Captain ask for help like that. Which is saddening. But I thought she was asking for help because her men got slaughtered in front of her.
I'm more okay with that.
Nolus, she wasn't asking for help for only herself but her men as well. She isn't selfish you know.
Nothing sad about it, it'd be the same thing if a squad of guys were ambushed and had to send up a red flare. They're asking for help and it isn't demeaning. Don't read too much into this situation.
-
Sanji Vs Velgo, eh? Well, let's see if Sanji is able to handle him alone. And I hope Caesar is going to stay down this time, Luffy should be able to knock out with a single punch a buffon with no physical strenght.
On the other hand Jinbei keeps proving he is not strawhat material, he is too soft. Zoro or Sanji would have sinked Coribou's ship.
-

Hancock's powerful (taking down Pacifistas like nothing), and given Tsuru's status, we can assume she's strong too.
But I agree with you. I just didn't like how Tashigi had to be defeated again.

But the way it is represented in the panels. Maybe we have a different read on them but I thought it was more a helpless feeble cry for help which is the annoying part. Again shonen manga, it should be expected but put up more of a fight here! I really hope Oda reads this forum (b/c I think he does….or I WISH he does), b/c using another female character to show a sign of weakness/plot device to introduce the strength of men....is getting tired. I read fairy tails and I love how all the women are kickass.

Because Usopp was the one who defeated Jabra, despite initially being paired up to fight him, right?

etc.
Fishman Island also had some misleading initial pairings. -
Don't know why so many people don't think Sanji should be able to beat Vergo, i will be very surprised if after all that training he doesn't beat him… barely but he should be able to do it

Too bad Fairy Tail reduces women to fanservice and no personality instead and has a lot more problems overall.
But this is off-topic. I really did enjoy the whole banter with the Broenbeard group, too. Amusing.

Indeed. Realistically, Sanji, Zoro, and Luffy were all stronger than your average Captain after Enies Lobby. Unlike Smoker or Law, they've spent the past two years doing nothing but training and growing stronger. Hell, Sanji's attacks were on par with Jimbe's last arc, so the idea that Sanji could beat a Vice-Admiral is very, very realistic. Not only realistic, but necessary if they're going to win in the New World.
-

Tashigi has always looked upto smoker, and she knows all too well Vergo's strength, and that she is no match for him. Ofcourse she will depend on smoker when in trouble. Also, do you honestly expect her to defeat Vergo, the guy who even Smoker and Law are not sure about defeating ?? I don't see what the problem is. Also, there will always be more male characters than female characters, as this is a pirate manga, and majority of the pirates were men.
Edit- Even in FT, the males are a lot stronger than the females, so I don't see what your point is.
-
im really hyped to see this arc on the anime but specialy the opening (full of spoilers i guess, ceaser, law, vergo…)
but maybe it can happen sooner than expected, as the next episode preview seems to cover 2/3 chapters
-
I see a lot of people pissed off because of the SANJI ENTRANCE and fight vs Vergo…
Let me tell you guys, Sanji is a main character, he's Luffy's 3rd Strong nakama, and his bounty is still very inferior.
Remember, if he made it thru that Gay island, it means he has beaten the hell out of Okamas, and they're very strong, he trained with Ivankov too for 2 years. seeing him beating Vergo is LEGIT.
I personaly prefer SANJI than Smoker, who's got a less important personality than Sanji, that we see every chapter. Smoker, maybe I want to see him fight 2 or 3 times and thats okay, Cuz we have to see him at the end of the manga for a major role.
Now, I kindly request you guys to keep it cool, and don't complain about Sanji vs Vergo fight. Sanji still got a very low bounty, Its a shame, since Killer got 200,000,000 and all the other supernovas got HIGH bounties. Sanji needs a RISE-UP. and I want to see him DESTROY VERGO.
Please Oda, make sanji DESTROY vergo. Because he's just TOO COOL FOR IT.
-
it is too early for a Straw Hat to lose they not even enter the grand line fully if Sanji lose now might as well end is dream at Punk Hazard (ODA WILL NOT LET SANJ LOSE) i see smoker interupting and Sanji helping tagishi to evacuate the G-5 soldiers
-
Don't know if it's just a bad scan but if not notice how vergo's arm becomes black when blocking tashigi's sword.
Seems things turning black is the new universal cue for the colour of armaments, at least when used to infuse something. Also where is franky and what is he doing?
-

Well I think it's obvious that the backhand to her jaw left it broken as she was not able to talk afterward, however she is conscious so there's something. This has nothing to do with shonen, she will kick ass in due time, i'm sure of it. But that time is not now, obviously. If you think that it's a helplessly feeble cry for help then i suggest you get off of the "girl power" juice", sit back, relax and look at the big picture in this manga. Also it's ridiculous to think that Oda used her, or any female, to show the strength of men and the weakness of women in that situation.. She was merely the strongest of the marines in that group so she got the beat down. Plus, she was the only one in that group who new what Vergo was up to, so she was a priority target, hence why she got the beatdown extra hard instead of a simple shigan.
Point is, this is actually a recurring theme for Tashigi. Who knows, it may be a significant plot point for her character in which she hardens up and gets stronger. I like Tashigi and I do want to see her become stronger, maybe even High VA level at the end of the manga, but I also understand that she's directly challenging a viewpoint in the world of swordsmen. Where men are better than women, based purely on physical stats, not skills. That's where her underlying dream is. It's not to collect the 21 great swords from the hands of pirates/scum, it's to be one of, if not the greatest swordswoman who would be respected by her male piers based on her performance.
Went on a bit of a tangent but still, not everything Oda does to a female character is a war on women. Ease up and relax.
EDIT: Just want to add that Tashigi was KO'd by a haki hardened back fist. And she's still conscious. It wasn't a simple punch or a shigan which downed the fodder G-5. She's tougher than most of you think.
-
Well, Vergo was confident that he would be able to take on Law, Smoker, the Strawhats and their own marines at once. He is really an idiot or really strong.
I think he is going to give Sanji a run for his money.
-
It feels kinda weird if Luffy and Sanji are really the only Straw Hats of the arc to fight. But it doesn't seem like there are any other enemies other than CC, Vergo, and Monet.
-
I can't stop grinning, guys. That chapter. That manga. That Oda. <3
-

As said many times already, he could be confident because he had Law's heart, thanks to CC. I don't know where people get the impression that Vergo is anywhere around Law's level. If he was he wouldn't need Laws heart, and CC wouldn't comment that Law is even stronger than himself (he, out of all people).
-

Nope. The Strawhats clearly aren't the only people who trained and grew stronger.

Huh, really? Well I like said….Oda has to convey Vergo as a threat, so it's good that he's so tough. Still miffed about Tashigi, but I suppose she'll get stronger because of it.
And I think we'll discover the mystery behind Momonosuke being absent very soon…..
-
This is the final straw. If Oda makes Sanji loose to Vergo then that will be the final straw in terms of Zoro Fanboyism. I think that we all remember Sanji from the early days, he was always the man with the tactics and without him I think we can all say that the strawhats would be dead by now. He was epic as Mr.Prince and during Skypiea his stealth on the ship was unmatched. In Enies Lobby he went up against the 2nd strongest of Cp9 and then he was dropped and outshined by Zoro. I hope that Oda uses this chance to make sanji great again and not fuel the Zoro is stronger then Sanji arguments.
-
And then Sanji comes in the picture to save her. I'm fine with that, Sanji being serious and kicking ass is something I enjoy, but why him? Why not someone on the crew that hasn't had many fights, like Brook? Or Nami? Hell, it should've been Smoker! I think the best fit in this particular situation is Sanji and none other. Why would Nami, Ussop or brook jump off the All mighty Brownbeardbus to help Tashigi? for them she
s just another marine, plus brook is hungry. Tashigi won
t give no food to Brook. Besides, Robin took her out in Allabasta so she wouldnt step in for her, Kinemon is too busy thinking about Momonosuke, and even if Zoro might feel unconfortable and may hesitate due to her similarities with kuina (Though it seems he
s moved forward and got over it) he wouldnt simply go and protect her. Smoker would, but he was busy racing with Luffy and he
s now in CCs room so no. Making Sanji step in, just blends in well with the situation and character. PLus, I honestly think he might have good chances against Vergo. Just take a look at Zoro
s reaction " Just let him be". Zoro wasnt worried in the last bit about him facing that "extrange presence" so all in all I don
t think Sanji will be outmatched; if anything shinokuni will be leaked inside because of XYZ and the fight will end in a stalemate with everyone running from the gas…. " Running, how annoying" -
Because Usopp was the one who defeated Jabra, despite initially being paired up to fight him, right?
Because Sanji was the one who defeated Kalifa, despite initially being paired up to fight her, right?
etc.
Fishman Island also had some misleading initial pairings.I'm aware, but I was saying that considering where Smoker is and where Sanji and Vergo are, it just looks unlikely. I suppose Smoker could go "damn, Vergo's not here …. Bye!" and run off looking for him, but it just seems likely that he's where he is for a reason . . .

Where did I say she was selfish?
And I still feel it wasn't that necessary on Oda's part to do this right after Smoker trusted Tashigi with the crew and all.
