I've been wondering this lately, it seems as if a lot of people don't watch TV live that much anymore, rather, instead, they have stuff like Roku to watch shows on Hulu Plus or Netflix.
If so, how's it like? I mean, really, do you guys watch any sports live, or game shows, singing competitions, etc.
I mainly watch sports these days plus big events like the Eurovision etc. Usually I use my TV as a dual screen monitor for web streams or TV shows from my PC, or for gaming. There's just not much on TV these days that interests me, for shows like Game of Thrones I download the episodes to watch as soon as possible and then buy the BD when it comes out.
The TV is on usually though even if I'm not actively using it like I mentioned before. It's more of a habit to me and I've wondered why that is.
If so, how's it like? I mean, really, do you guys watch any sports live, or game shows, singing competitions, etc.
If American Idol's disasterous ratings are anything to go by I say no.
It's not really surprising that people want to watch TV shows at their own pace, especially when there's so many alternative ways to view things available. Plus with a gazillion channels that all have to constantly up their quality you'll end up with way too many things to watch per night, often with shows airing at the same time (especially on sundays and thursdays).
As far as I am concerned Netflix is TV now.
But in all seriousness I still watch TV for certain shows that can't be easily found on the interwebs.
The last few years I've only actively watched Fringe, House, and Community. Also, Jeopardy with my family. I'm watching Breaking Bad right now but it's downloaded episodes until I'm caught up. I'll sometimes just turn something on if I'm bored as well. There's not very many good things on to me anymore besides a few shows, most of which are off the air now.
I only watch Boardwalk Empire, Walking Dead (which I haven't even finished season 2 of), Family Guy (Hi Haters), Ultimate Spider-Man (Hi again haters), FOP Reruns (pre Poof), American Dad and that's about it.
I watch… the Daily Show.
And that's it.
Everything else is netflix, dvd, or interneted. Works best with my schedule that way, since I'm almost never home in time for anything.)
I only turn my TV on for re-runs of things (Seinfeld, Friends, Scrubs) and now, One Piece on Saturdays. I watch Game of Thrones live but that's at my dad's. Guess it still counts anyway.
I was watching Revenge live for a while but I stopped following it due to lack of interest. You have to be really good to keep me watching weekly.
If I'm actually caught up with a show though and a new episode is airing, I'll watch it on TV no problem.
The only thing I watch regularly is Toonami on Saturdays. I'll also watch my other shows (Doctor Who, Boondocks, Venture Bros, Futurama, etc.) whenever they air new episodes, but that's only 2-3 months out of the year each. Everything else is Netflix, DVD, or Internet.
Many people still do, and will continue to as long as there are things on TV that people are excited to see the moment they go live. Especially anything that's recorded live on a daily basis as opposed to long running series. However, I can say that personally, I almost never watch anything live unless I'm super bored and start channel flipping.
But like, when you start recording shows or watching catch-up style on Netflix/Hulu Plus, isn't hard to avoid spoilers a little bit with the internet?

Yeah exactly, that's also why I was LIVID when Verizon Fios removed the Funimation Channel. It used to be so nice as a backdrop when doing something else like drawing or using the computer, and then glance a bit.
DVR for me. It's easier to keep up with shows than to catch up.
Plus the added bonus of getting to fast forward through commercials.

I would have serious qualms with exposing my children to cable TV.
I only watch the channels HBO, Starz and adult swim/comedy central for Venture Bros, South Park and Boondocks. The rest is netflix and internet baby.

I love that feeling of comraderie, it's part of why I still try to catch up on series at a breakneck pace. I like feeling like I'm a true part of things, as in I'm watching some part of history come into be at its most very current. Also, discussing the shows afterwards on forums is a unique part of the experience that we get to take part in today.
With background noise, it depends on what I'm doing on the computer. If I'm trying to read a series, maybe I'll have the TV on in the background. If I'm playing a game where I've already experienced everything a thousand times? Sure, Ross from Friends can whine in the background in his very distinct voice. It's nice to have on in the right circumstances. Just not when I'm trying to immerse myself in something.
Sports. I don't really watch Basketball or Baseball much but I follow 7 teams in other sports so I pretty much always have stuff to watch year round.
When I had my own place I used to watch Sportscenter all the time.
There's a few shows I watch and if I'm around I'll make sure to catch them on TV (usually I download them).
Most people I know only watch live tv.
The only time I watch TV is when there is some cartoon my daughter wants to see. News, Shows, Cartoons, Movies, ect. I use internet for everything now. Having the possibility to watch and get everything on demand is so great and creepy at the same time.
I don't watch tv either because I have my own schedule that does not conform to the broadcast times of the shows I like. And then there is the fact that all the shows I like are mostly American and we get like every season 1 year after it airs with dubs that I can't listen to.
If DVR counts, I watch a couple. Otherwise no. I don't even get channels like HBO which air most of the interesting things (Game of Thrones, currently).
As a child I used to watch Live TV everyday, then I learned how to watch stuff online for free. TV shows, movies, games, whatever, I could get it for free and at anytime. I didn't have to wait till 5 for a new show to come on and miss it by accident. Instead I could watch it online whenever I felt like it. For a time it was really nice, but now I find myself disliking it because I don't give the shows or creators of them any credit or views or anything. I just did everything illegally for free.
So now I try to watch Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead on TV while it's on so it gets my view and what not. I find myself hating 90% of the trash on TV now though, and I just can't bring myself to sit down and watch it anymore.

Well networks aren't going under so I don't think it's dying any time soon. And if anything what would die is the fixed-time airing model.

I however do really like to have a lazy Sunday of watching Most Shocking. The crashes are usually the most interesting episodes. Nobody dies in the footage they show but these people survive horrendous accidents. It's really amazing. Putting on a marathon of Kitchen Nightmares, Bar Rescue, Project Runway, Best Ink, Top Chef, SNL or terrible horror and or action movies I'd never watch normally. Just so much easier to find random stuff if you are surfing. Just land on a channel and forget where you put the remote.

I meant paying for the internet regardless. Whether or not they had TV shows to watch online. Meaning the added bonus of online TV shows, is free.
I use my TV pretty much only for video games and watching Blu Rays. The concept of having to watch certain things at a certain time needs to be a thing of the past (unless it's a live broadcast of course).

Turned my TV on maybe 20 times in the last year or so - mainly to watch international DVD's/BluRays that wont work on my PC even with VLC.
The Net just has too much - YouTube/Hulu/Tv Channels Websites - So I can go from surfing websites and forums to watching shows to playing games all on my PC without needing to hunt for a single remote.
Glad I never bought the Projector I was going to use instead of a TV.

I'd imagine you're talking from the US perspective here but I'll tell you a bit how it's like here on the other side of the pond.
Finnish TV has several public channels all of which show a fair amount of sports. There's a law here that requires that major sport events such as the olympics, football EC, WC etc. have to be shown on public channels. A couple of our public channels are government-funded and they tend to focus more on quality series and programs than the others which are more entertainment-focused. Despite this YLE (the government-funded broadcasting company) has a deal with HBO and has shown shows like The Sopranos, Game of Thrones, True Blood and Boardwalk Empire on its channels.
But lately of course some of the more popular sports (like ice hockey for example) is on a cable channel you have to pay for (or buy internet broadcast). I personally pay a small amount, maybe 20 € a year for a cable card which gives me around 6-7 more channels, one of them which is Eurosport which shows a lot of football and snooker, which I love. So I'm doing fine without pay-TV, if I really want to watch a match I find a web stream. You can of course get stuff like NHL gamecenter of NFL pass too if you're into those leagues.
As for finding new TV shows, I started thinking how many new shows I've "discovered" in the last 5 years or so. I couldn't think of anything else than Game of Thrones. And of course Game Center CX, but no network in Finland is dedicated enough to show a japanese show about video games…

There are quite a few sites that stream sports games.
I'm not sure about the live reality shows though. I've missed many seasons of So You Think You Can Dance due to working late shifts…
Honestly, I don't even really watch TV anymore. If not for Baseball, NFL, Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones I'd never touch a TV remote. Internet is just the complete package. Don't need TV when the Internet is here!

With stuff like Apple/Google TV, Roku, and now the new xbone it is really easy to cut the cord. TV is going to see a huge shift in these next few years. Right now HBO and ESPN are getting huge money to be exclusive to cable, once either or both go cable companies are going to lose a lot of customers.
At school I used to watch everything on hulu or buy it on amazon/itunes, or pirate if it wasn't on either of those. Not much of a sports guy but you when I ddi watch I went to a local bar.

I watch The Voice live when I can and some stuff like Community, Parks and Rec, Once Upon a Time, and Revenge. But I can usually watch these online just fine.
Live TV's not dead yet, per say, but it's becoming increasingly more difficult for the networks to monetize their viewership, what with ads being the primary revenue source for them in the first place. Unless the nets find a new way to make money, we may see it die here in the next 10-20 years. I mean, NBC just renewed a show regularly drawing only 1% of the demo to its timeslot. Compare to just a few years ago when shows getting 3 or 4% were considered dead on arrival.
This really sucks though. cause I really don't want live TV to die off, unless it comes back again somehow quickly

Do you still specifically mean live TV? I think the future is going to be in streaming services and commercial-free subscription-based premium channels (like HBO).
