See, I think I find it hard to declare Nintendo a winner in the sense that the Sony conference just had so. much. more. It blew away anything else, easily.

BUT, that said, when I look at all the games Nintendo announced … In the end their console is going to be getting a serious amount of playtime for me. There's no huge "oomph" from a Metroid or an F-Zero or a Star Fox, but there's a steady stream of Pikmin, Wonderful 101, Donkey Kong Country, Super Mario Worlds (which looks fucking 10x better than anything Mario I was expecting ... it's like a merger of Super Mario 3D Land, NSMBU, and Super Mario Bros. 2), Wind Waker HD and the few third parties I'm super interested in (Watch Dogs and Lost World).
Combine this with a killer year for the 3DS and it's a ton of games.

So no, Nintendo didn't put up as much of a show and if I were an Xbox 360 owner or someone not traditionally Nintendo I really would not see the point in investing in a Wii U. But having one, I am extremely pleased at the fact there's going to be SO MUCH to play.

And then 2014 with Smash Bros. and Mario Kart ... this thing will be the secondary party console everyone has next to their PS4.

I always just consider them a separate niche reserved for being Nintendo that, as of the last decade or so, Sony and Microsoft worked parallel to, not as competitors. I mean, technically they all are, but whatevs

Yeah, I agree with Holy on this. Sony and Nintendo kind of jointly packed a wallop. While Sony had the best overall showing, I don't feel the need to buy a PS4 yet. Oh, I will, when the games start pouring, but I'm still burned enough by Square that their games don't make me want to go out and purchase them right away.

Nintendo on the other hand, I need a Wii U. Fucking X. Fucking SSB4. Fucking Sonic Lost World. Damn, I can't even process how much I want all of these games right this second.

I just wonder, because while I don't really care for gaming anymore, there are still some franchises left that I still care about, one of them is Star Wars Battlefront. It being on the E3 pretty much confirms it's gonna be one at least two consoles, with the possibility of a PC port, right? So, there is like no way that battlefront 3 will be developed on a PC and then ported to a console? I really don't want it to happen like this, but I had so much fun with both predecessors I still feel like I need this.
When it's released then, how high are the chances of EA placing a "constant need for online" model on it like they did with the new Sim City, or Blizzard with Diablo 3? You guys know better about this stuff then I do, so how high are the chances of another franchise being ruined for me?
Man, I wish I never heard about this shit, because the only two things I'm feeling right now are happiness and pure dread, lol

PC games have their place at e3 too, but there's no company that pushes it as a platform, so it doesn't get much focus. Really nothing is known about Battlefront at this point, even which consoles it's on, so it's probably going to be available for xbone, ps4, and PC.

Always online DRM is also still up in the air, but EA's release of Sim City was met with disaster, so they're not too high on using it for single player games atm.

Both Sony and Microsoft showed plenty of games.
It's all about what you personally enjoy the most.

Hmm…well out of all the presentations, Nintendo probably has me wanting to go out and throw money at them the most with the games they showed. Definitely would want to get a PS4 somewhere way on down the road as well, both for interesting games and entertainment against Microsoft. The Xbox I couldn't care less about. Terrible restrictions, and the only games I cared about will also be on PC or other consoles. Pretty damn good E3 though, i'd say.

More of the oomph of "Hey guys, here's something completely out of left field that no one was expecting but everyone wanted"
Everyone was expecting the used game fee thing to become a standard and for Sony to have to fold. So them coming out and saying they support the used game market and sharing … it was a big sigh of relief for the industry as a whole.

You could say Nintendo's hype monster today was Smash and the Megaman reveal, but even then ... that's something everyone was expecting and happy to see confirmed. And it doesn't help that when Nintendo said it'd be convincing people the Wii U was worth it, everyone inevitably thinks of all the franchises Nintendo has delivered in the past. I know many people are writing Nintendo off because there was no Metroid.

I don't really think Sony was showing they are bigger or anything. If there's anything, I see it more of clearing the air of trends that some assumed Sony was going to succumb to. Aside that, they showed quite a variety of games that I'd be interested in. Sure, they were not mostly "nostagia driven IPs" that were tirelessly rehashed for over multiple centuries, but I'm not the kind of gamer that dwells on just that.

In all fairness Microsoft deserves it.
Don't get me wrong, I'm more than satisfied with this years offerings, their were just no pleasant surprises.

Talk about that, I'm really excited about Rain. Easily the most unique game I saw this E3, can't wait to play it.

And Watch Dogs. I was impressed by the possibilities.

In terms of games I agree with you. But when the focus is on things like price, power, drm, used game ownership, and always online, there are clear winners and losers in those categories when it's not the same across the board.

I say this as a 360 fan who was MS's customer to lose. I have no bias towards Sony in the slightest, but MS lost me as much as Sony won me.

I know I'm dying for a new Metroid and was disappointed that it was a no-show, but all the other games that Nintendo brought to the table definitely make up for its absence. And obviously it's about preference, and I've always been a Nintendo fan, so my bias is clear. That's not to say I'm a blind fanboy, of course, I just haven't really checked out the other two conferences yet. I did catch the tail end of Sony's, and as I said, I only saw the obvious jabs at MS with reveals that should be, and have always been, industry standards and then two guys (and maybe a girl later, I don't know, it was laggy) playing a first-person shooter that dragged on for too long.

Overall, it was a great show, except for MS. Nintendo also dropped the ball with how laggy their stream was, so hopefully they'll take preventive measures next year…

Also, this time around I was more concerned about whether or not consumers would "win." Sony brought a sigh of relief to many people. The consumer rights issue goes beyond who will have the best games or whatever.

I think I would've been fine with Nintendo's Direct this morning if it wasn't for the fact that there were virtually no surprises. Megaman is in the next Smash Bros was the biggest news, and everything else was either previously anounced or expected. I kept waiting for Nintendo to suddenly pull out a new Starfox, or F-Zero, or Metriod, or Zelda, or SOMETHING that they didn't already say that they would be showing, and it just never came. I understand that may be a little unreasonable, but aside from the Smash Bros trailer, there was nothing that impressed me about the Direct. There were good games, sure, but honestly the WiiU desperately needs more games, and I'm afraid that what they showed might not cut it. I definitely don't think it's going to be swaying a ton of people into buying the system.

Talk about issues, all of the big three seemed to have issues when it came to presentations. Microsoft and Sony both had games freeze and lag mid-presentation, Microsoft had the sound issue (and the heckling of that poor guy), and Nintendo had horrible lag on their site.

That's something they need to look into.

F-Zero is somewhat redundant with Mario Kart being more well-known and selling better. MK8 itself feels a lot like F-Zero anyway.

And I don't think a new Starfox would sway that many people to the Wii U because it's not that big of a franchise. Zelda is inevitable, but tends to be developed at the middle or end of the console's lifespan in order to keep sales going. And I guess Other M's bad reception forced Nintendo to put a hold on the series so they can think on a new direction to the franchise.

See, at this moment, with the Wii U not doing so well, Nintendo is actually doing right by playing safe with already done formulas that work.

I would actually love a new F-Zero. The only one I ever played was this one GBA one, but music, speed, there wasn't a single thing I didn't like about it. It was different to me than every other racer since they still don't feel as 'fast'. That said MK8 did look excellent and faster that previous Mario Karts, should be fun all the same ^^

Please, don't kid yourself. All companies played it safe. Fact of the matter is people will buy Sony and Microsoft consoles because of gritty first person shooters and sports, and people will buy Nintendo consoles because of Sonic, Mario, party stuff and cheapest console that runs Skylanders.

So yea, playing it safe was a good move because they'll satisfy all those people. And even if they were to go and make an F-Zero or Metroid or Star Fox, it wouldn't sell as well as you imagine and they would be judged against the likes of Destiny, with which no Nintendo franchise can hope to compete.
It's a money game and the goal is to make what people will buy. Also, I keep hearing the whole "Oh, these are 3DS games on Wii U" argument, mostly from IGN. That's f*cking bullcrap. People are just trying to legitimize the complain that Nintendo isn't giving them gritty, actiony games. It's the main reason people keep bitching about wanting Metroid.

But thats exactly what they've done for the last 20 years, and constantly been the leader.

After you've been through a few Nintendo systems, you start to feel "same old same old", but… you aren't the market they're targeting. Its always new (or only the third iteration) to SOMEONE.

I've only ever cared about Nintendo's handheld consoles. I love my 3DS, and I think Nintendo has a much wider audience with the 3DS than they have with the Wii U. They are the handheld kings.

The point of the matter is this. Sony's conference WAS a big deal. For several reasons… but to me... wow, i've never quite seen such a direct and brutal undercutting of the competition in gaming. They went STRAIGHT for the jugular.

I can understand the hype/fangasming/competition/bragging. I've never seen something like this happen in the gaming world. People are gonna be excited and juvenile. It's gamers. it's gonna happen.

Aside from that these were the reasons Sony nailed it:
-Indie focus (they used expensive stage time to show off some steam games)
-Female protagonists. (Two games were featured with females in primary roles)
-Which factors into diversity. (Even if many games are multiplat... they showed off a more diverse lineup. Not kinect and dudebroshoot)
-Assurance. They basically said to me "everything will be fine. your ps+ is the same and you can rent games and play offline. People have beaten these points to death... but it's important.

Honestly, like many have already said. Both MS and Sony showed off great games. In a way... it was less Sony's capitalizing and more Microsoft that dropped the ball.

If they'd have backpedaled on their changes. Then e3 would have been quite a typical e3. Sony would have played it safe, parade exclusives and not talk about the Vita and MS would have shown off dudebro games and smartglass/kinect crap.

But MS has been trying to(poorly) convince gamers that "times are a-change-ing!! But we've got yer backs!" and Sony took that unpopularity and used it against them. Which not only was an undercutting... but a confident declaration that they have consumer interests in their mind.

MS didn't get crushed... they took a risk and it didn't pay off.

IMO, Nintendo's new way to communicate is perfect for a gamer like me.
I've enjoyed spending the last 2 hours watching the Nintendo Direct, their trailers and their Developer Direct and I've learnt everything I needed to be convinced of buying the WiiU in 2014.
The classic "conference" format was so boring.
I hope they keep this format next year too.

Also, I think some people are way too impatient regarding announcements or expecting way too much from E3.
I'm quite sure there are quite a few games in development or planned (Metroid for example) that they didn't reveal.
Why would Nintendo reveal all their cards right now ?

So, in my defense, I didn't know Nintendo was doing follow-up Directs. Those were actually kind of cool, and I admit I feel a little better about their E3 as a whole now.

Still a little disappointed, though. I would feel a lot better if pretty much any of what they showed wasn't already announced to some degree beforehand. There was just very little that wowed me, and I'm honestly surprised at how many people were impressed. We knew about almost every game they showed, just not the specifics. Even the "you're just getting tired of Nintendo after being with them for so long" argument doesn't really match up - I own a Wii U and plan on getting more games for it, including a few they showed off. But I think Nintendo made a bit of a mistep here.

This is the first time when the "first new Mario of this generation" didn't interest me; Mario 64 was a milestone in 3D adventure gaming, Mario Sunshine had a unique set up and a huge new game mechanic at its center, and Mario Galaxy wowed me the moment I saw it. This new one…looks just like the one on the 3DS. I just feel like there's no real draw to this one other than "hey, it's Mario in HD!". Nintendo has played it safe over the years to a degree, sure, but I can't remember them playing it this safe with their first real Mario game on the system. I'm sure it will be a great game and all, but my first impression of the game isn't that great, especially since I was really looking forward to what they would do with it. And this was one of the games that we knew virtually nothing about before hand, so it came across as an even bigger let down for me than it probably should have.

Perhaps I was a little naive in saying that this wouldn't convince many people in getting a Wii U, judging by some of the responses I've seen, so I'll be optimistic.

I really am more happy about Super Mario 3D World than I was at the prospect of another Galaxy. It feels that World not only provides the tight platforming we have come to expect, but it also serves as a nice callback to Super Mario Bros. 2. I'm really excited to play it.

Also, a Mario game in which rescuing Peach is not the main motivation is an exciting prospect.

We actually knew almost nothing about Super Mario 3D World, Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros. until today. And DKC wasn't announced beforehand at all.

No gameplay footage, no official art, hell, not even concept art. The only thing we knew is that they existed.

Something tells me that the real problem here is your standards.

I expected E3 to be complete shit, but hype from Smash Bros.

What I got?
-Microsoft succeeding in have a boring as presentation like I expected.
-Sony trash talking the fuck out of Microsoft.
-Hype from Smash Bros.
-A few awesome surprises like an Oddworld remake or Kingdom Hearts 3.

Expectations surpassed.

You really can't hype E3. Especially after the last few years we've had.

The one thing I think people are overlooking is the mechanics of the super mario game.

So many just look at visuals and think "oh its the same world as the 3DS game"

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't htis the first ever 3d mario game that you can play with more than 1 player? I'm very curious to see how that will work.
