then probably law want it to produce his own smiles?
And create a army of Bepos? Sure, why not?

But I seriously don't know where Oda will take us next… We still have Kinemon and Momonosuke which could us lead to Wano but now Luffy is fucking heavily Dofla and a Yonkou up.
Damn things really start fast in the NW and for the SHs
The strawhats will travel to Wano only to be attacked by Doflamingos crew, and there will be a "Seven Samurai", protect the village, kind of fight!

the best part is going to be after this arc when law and luffy start to make their preparations and we get the fall out. i'm sure we will finally get a good look at either big mom or kaidou and see their reaction. hopefully we get to see a glimpse of what shanks and blackbeard are up to as well.
So this is what Dofla was talking about. Dofla said that even he himself is fucked if Caesar is captured because he is the only one who can make the SAD. It's great to see Luffy giving no shit about things again. Gotta love that serious death stare at the end. So my guess is that this arc is going to soon end and Dofla's subordinates who were sent to the island is only gonna return the bad news to Dofla. Man I am so excited
Who would've guessed when Brownbeard was first introducted that the readers would get invested in him emotionally?
Realizing how nitpicky this sound, but even though the Brownbeard stuff was great, at the same time, the chapter felt spaced out (pages 13-15 on mangapanda).
Finally, since it's been said a lot that CC is the only one that can make SMILES, does that mean he made Lassoo and Funkfreed?
Or another potential theory, could the Impel Down Guards be SMILES? Okay, maybe not since their hybrid form are human/beast. That would imply that they were inserted into corpses…
Edit: Scratch the last two lines.

If you'd told me a year ago that Brownbeard would contain two of the most emotional moments of the upcoming arc, I would have laughed in your face and directed you to the Dumb Theories thread.
Yet here we are.
I don't think ID members were Smiles user… Oda wouldn't let Croc mention awakaned Zoans and their special abilities if they would be just copies
It also solves the rather big plot hole regarding races in the OPverse as there wasn't a race of animal people on the Sabaody list and many were wondering where exactly those two did belong to.
But what about the guards in ID? They are confirmed to be awakened Zoans (Crocodile), but what if they are Awakened SMILE users? Chopper's monster form seems to be the normal "awakened mode" so far. We need more information regarding this matter.
There was a race called "Minkmen" in that list. Many people assume that they belong to that race.

It's also interesting when you consider that when he was first re-introduced in this arc, you could almost hear the disappointed sounds of a classroom saying "Brownbeard?! Mr. Brownbeard is substituting for Mrs. Wigglesticks today?" as if he was filling in for another character.
But then Brownbeard turns out to be the type of substitute who just let you play heads-up seven-up all day.

I know, we already discussed this a few posts later than that.
Still, the SMILE explanation would include a lot more than both just being Minkmen so i am willing to give the newer theory a little advantage.

The SMILE theory doesn't explain why Bepo is attracted to female bears.

Yeah. Thinking about it, I'm mistaken. I'm confusing Vegapunk's method of fusing devil fruits to inanimate objects to what SMILE are. Lassoo/Funkfreed/Impel Down guards have to be SMILE for it to make sense.
Excellent chapter! 10/10.
Makes up for that horrible shit-chapter last time.
Pretty obvious that the Yonkou involved with Doflamingo is Big Mom, maybe Pekoms is a result of that. This is a great start for the upcoming arc which will involve Doflamingo and Big Mom(most certainly).
Finally, since it's been said a lot that CC is the only one that can make SMILES, does that mean he made Lassoo and Funkfreed?
Not exactly friend.
CC is the only one that can make SAD, but manufacturing SMILES out of SAD doesn't seem to require CC's hand, as it is done in Dofla's factory.
Well damn.
I'm actually interested in the cover story now, it'll be interesting to see who Caribou runs into on Kaido's island!
I happened to go back over some of the the stuff in Sabaody today, and during all the stuff in the auction house, while Disco is on the den-den-mushi with Doflamingo, he tells him:
"human trade is old news, this is the age of smiles"
I guess the SAD is what he was referring to way back then!!
Poor Brownbeard :( I can't help but feel sorry for the guy.
Hoping next week the henchies get the cameras ready just in time for Caesars defeat to be shown to the world!
But I seriously don't know where Oda will take us next… We still have Kinemon and Momonosuke which could us lead to Wano but now Luffy is fucking heavily Dofla and a Yonkou up.

Dressrosa has to be next, Dofla wouldn't send Buffalo and Baby 5 as back up if they weren't gonna arrive within a few hours, so it has to be quite close to Punk Hazard.
This one felt short, but I felt like it was worth the wait.
-Aw, poor Brownbeard. I'm really feeling sorry for him for some reason, but I feel like people will complain about his part, it did take a pretty big part of the chapter.
-Excellent spreads and artwork in general with Luffy. It's always great when he goes serious.
-So those artificial DFs(apparently there are called "Smiles") are produced by DF and supported by a Yonkou?
Since Luffy has already picked a fight with Big Mam, I can't help but think Law is going after BM and she's supporting the whole thing.
So yeah, looking forward to next week, though I feel like it'll switch back to Vergo vs. Smoker and then those two fights intertwined will end the action part of the arc.
Great chapter.
That punch was SO satisfying. Luffy's face at the end, he looked so pissed. I don't think he's ever been so angry before. What makes it so sweet that it wasn't his usual mindless anger. It was cold, calm, righteous rage. He calmly listened to what Caeser had to say and then unleashed his fury very deliberately. It makes it ten times more satisfying.
WOW i got confused
is SAD and SMILE are the same or not?
Awesome chapter, gotta love Brownbeard and Caesar. Also enjoyed how even Luffy took notice in Brownbeard, it's just awesome what Oda does with a character, that was introduced just to show the bad impact of Whitebeard's death first.
Also supporting the theory of Bepo and Pekoms being Smile users.
And I don't know how much all this has to do with objects having Devil Fruits, but it would kinda make sense, if CC does some of that too. I don't really think Vegapunk would just make those for random people like Mr. 4.
WOW i got confused
is SAD and SMILE are the same or not?
SAD is necessary to create the Smiles from what I understand.
Dunno if everyone knew this already, but smiles were foreshadowed since 504
WOW i got confused

SAD and SMILE is like cocoa and chocolate.
You use one to make another.
Chapter 689:
Overall: GREAT development. Next week better come fast! Punk Hazard has certainly been amazing :)
WOW i got confused

There was a page explaining it that was absent from the release.
Go check it out again.
Loved. this. chapter.
Picturing Luffy's punch on the final page to be animated like his punch at the Human Auction House.
so how do you think smiles are made? do they capture the animal they want to use for a zoan and dip them into the sad and then it becomes the devil fruit?

Caesar, at this rate you're contesting Spandam on my villain rankings, you magnificent bastard you

Caeser is basically a character Oda made to be able to experiment with drawing the most over-the-top, wacky expressions. And they are amazing :)
"I wanna draw a really, really, evil guy, and make him have the most evil faces."
-Oda's mind, 2010.

I think he is my favorite One Piece villain at this point. The faces, the monologues… All so very stereotypically dastardly evil mad scientist, but still brilliant.
Luffy's punch was amazing. On par with the Bellamy punch and the Tenryuubito punch.
One piece who? We are in the age of SMILES!
What Im liking the most is Oda
s portrayal of Zoan DFs.
From MF forwards, they have become one of the more versatile ones. Im not sure now if SMILE users get weakened by sea stone or if they can swim at all. A man-made fruit doesn
t necesarily mean a less powerful or special one. For all we know it might be an enhanced product or "replica". I only hope that these fruit only cover normal animals and not prehistoric or mythical ones. My heart wouldn`t be able to cope with an Army of sengokus or marcos
EDIT: LET ALONE AN ARMY OF CHOPPERS
Magellan was pretty awesome, but as far as decidedly evil antagonists go, Caesar is the best one to come along in ages. Hody who?

People might say he's "cartoonishly evil", and lament that his motivation is just an arrogant egotrip. Pish tosh, I say he's absurdly entertaining, and I'd much rather have him than some Naruto style "Deep" or redeemable villain.

Really that would be great to have them defend a place instead of attack one for once.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
SAD is probably for "Smile Activation Device" or something like that.
The SMILE theory doesn't explain why Bepo is attracted to female bears.
Bestiality fetish? :ninja:
Well, Bepo could also just have eaten the Smile-Hito Hito No Mi as a bear. :ninja:
It's really a hallmark of Oda's fantastic writing that he can create a villain so wacky and goofy and fun and yet the same time still build him up as a severely dangerous threat to the point that the character can live up to all the drama and intrigue and hype surrounding him.

Pish tosh indeed! Cartoonishly evil is fine by me if it's fun to watch. Laughable one moment and utterly despicable the next is a fine way to be in the world of One Piece. Here's hoping we see more baddies as entertaining in the future.
Bepo just likes sodomy, huh?

I wouldnt say Magellan is Evil. In fact he
s actually one of the "good guys" but hes on the other side of the scope. You know what happens when different wills collide. "I wanna save my brother" VS "I have to protect the civilians from scumbag pirates" How would he know Luffy is not one of those scumbags?. Magellan is extremely reliable, loyal and a force to be wary of but he isn
t rotten in spite of all that venom he`s got in store.
I`m positive that under other circumstances in a paralel world Magellan and Luffy could be the best friends ever.
Oh I agree. What I was trying to say was that Magellan was an amazing antagonist; Great design, personality, and extremely imposing- But he wasn't evil. I think we need to go back to Spandam, nearly 300 chapters ago, to find someone as deliciously hateable as Caesar.

I felt kinda bad for Magellan, he was just trying to do his job! Then all these damn pirates kept showing up and breaking all his stuff. Hanyabal wasn't exactly much help, either.
It's weird, I love that we get this villian moment with CC and a cool guy moment with Luffy, but all the past chapters with CC make me hesitant to call him a good villain, or character.
He's a dick who kicks puppies every time he walks and makes funny faces. I loved seeing the guy get punched, I liked the scenes that built up to it, but I can't bring myself to call him a good character. Really, the plot with Donflamingo is the thing that's giving this arc substance, otherwise the only thing separating CC from Hody is a cool coat and actual competence.
I can now totally imagine CC bragging to a crowd about killing a woman in front of her own daughter. Hell, CC's probably done it before.

Weak. Caesar would brag about killing a woman in front of her own daughter that he turned into a meth addict and only has five years to live or less.

Oh yes, Spandam. Hateable indeed, I doubt the deliciously part because he never entertained me one bit and failed to live up to all that hype, while ceasar is despicable and comical while being a threat which makes him a perfect "CLOWN". Spandam on the other hand was more like the early helmeppo with a difference of having a huge political power and army at his disposition
Caesars first appearance was him telling a wounded subordinate with frostbite "don't worry! I'll heal and warm you!", and then proceeding to torture him with gas and blow him up, going "tut tut, I hoped for a better effect".
I know that propably doesn't float everyones antagonist boat, but I just love having an asshole without excuses, someone who is just pure nasty through and through, and isn't going to become an ally or have his deeds played down in the later story.
All the stuff about Doflamingo, Law and the Yonko are easily my least favourite things about this arc. Caesar, Brownbeard, the kids and the samurai - thats where the heart is.

That was exactly the point of Spandam though? He was this little weakass slimeball, who had aquired authorative power and made life a living hell for people far stronger than him based purely off egoistical ambitions and spite. He was great precicely because he was weak. And how was Spandam "hyped", exactly?
Caesar isn't exactly a powerhouse either, his "hype" is from his skills and knowledge, and his evilness from all the ways he's manipulated people far, far weaker than himself.
