So… Natsu would be Zeref's brother's reanimated corpse, whom Zeref created as a magical Goldberg machine to perform an original suicide, because the gods hated him and he got the Uchiha syndrome; for some reason, Igneel fought against Natsu/END/Whatever and then decided to rear the little tit, up until the day Igneel himself died and went to (un)live inside Natsu's colon.
What a secret, really...
I don't even know anymore.
Some of those concepts were actually interesting on their own, and the idea of guy creating stronger and stronger creatures to end his own suffering while dragging innocents into it - that's a really neat idea. But none of it works. Let us see Zeref suffering. Let us see him spend time with his brother. Give the whole damn thing some validation, don't just shove a thousand clichés into the readers face hoping one of them will work.
And does this mean we're entering another end-of-the-series-war-arc that will span four years? I don't know if I could handle that, haven't recovered from Naruto yet.
Chapter was pretty good.
I just want to point out that Acnologia in human form looks a little bit too much like Zancrow. Minus the hella cool tooth necklace, tattoos and cape.
He just load it all out on us, without any kind of buildup. Ok, some of the reveals were slightly foreshadowed, but most of it is just out of the blue.
Maybe we're nearing the finale, and Mashima wants to tie up all loose ends. As for Zeref origin story, it takes more then 2/3 of a chapter to do something like that right. We're talking about THE villain of the story, ffs.
This chapter was a step up from last week and it's great that we're finally getting some answers/the plot might be getting some direction but I just can't find it in me to care at this point. Zeref as a character is just so meh to me despite being the Big Bad
That was a really weird chapter. It felt like even more of an empty husk than usual. The dialogue was weird, there were a lot of just awkward and stilted interactions, what was up with that group cheer and what was up with Gray at the end? Maybe pumping out consecutive chapters did actually take it's toll on Mashima.
Okay, 436 actually was a good chapter, that is on its own. However, the actual problems here are the context and the subtext.
About the context, even if there actually is some foreshadowing, nevertheless the overall course of the story feels so random. The Avatar and Yahtzee God stuff is a perfect example of this. It doesn't feel like there is a common thread. Instead, stuff just happens.
And about the subtext, it's basically non-existent. Instead of having some text between the lines, we got stuff like Zeref randomly showing up at Tenrou Island and blabbering some stuff over life and death. A very few exceptions aside we got told everything in the most blatant way possible. And a broken subtext basically is the most terrible thing that can happen to any fictional work. This was a decent/good chapter, but without the proper subtext in the whole story it will never give me the impression of being an awesome chapter.
435: So that is how Masima got the whole "Gray kills Frosch" thing out of the story? What the actual Fuck…
436 was decent I guess, but it felt weird in the way the info got delivered to the reader. It would be nice if Mashima tried to move on with the main plot instead of introducing the random "Monster of the week" enemy for each 4 week arc.
I don't get it. How did the whole Gray kills Frosch thing work?
I don't get it. How did the whole Gray kills Frosch thing work?
It doesn´t.
It just doesn´t.
The Frosch thing works by the sheer force of Nakama power - which obviously now has even reality warping powers.
Lucian and Acnologia are not as worse than Lucian in terms of means behind the actions. But its close.

This sums it up pretty well.
One of the biggest problems with this series is how… broken the world is. You have a tournament here, a war god there, some tower and a training island and what not, but nothing ties it all together. I guess Zeref was supposed to be the center, but his appearances and importance has been so scarce that it doesn't work. It's not that there hasn't been foreshadowing, it's more that he's played a far too small role for this to matter. Make more of the things that happened the fault of Zeref, show clearly that people have been suffering due to his actions. The war god last chapter for example, wouldn't it been better if they summoned a demon of Zeref's instead? And let it destroy part of the city and have the heroes arrive late, so we can feel something once it's defeated.
This could've been an amazing chapter, if we had cared more about Zeref, and if it was at least 2-3 chapters long.
If it had been a competent writer, it actually would've had some impact to an extent. But with Mashima, it's just eh with some "really" in it. One being why can't acnologia just stay in the Dragon form, because the human form doesn't look that great.
Also, the whole friendship theme is really destroyed because of this. Natsu didn't prevail because of friendship, it's because he was an experiment that was made to become stronger than even Zeref.
The fact Natsu was made by Zeref to become stronger than him, doesn't change the fact that he beat up most of his enemies through friendship power ups.

I just thought of how it will work for Mashima to keep it in the confines of the story, which will sound really cheesy because Fairy Tail. Zeref couldn't think about life because of his curse, and all the demons he made before then were all about death. Natsu was created but instead of being raised about killing, it was all about life with Igneel. Being in Fairy Tail, he was able to appreciate life, and think about it, unlike Zeref who the more he thought about it, the worse effects it had. Natsu will be on the other spectrum of Zeref, who is able to love all living things, and it comes from friendship. The more he values it, the stronger he becomes.
As for the chapter before, I'll take what I can get and at least appreciate the Gajeel stuff. Loved his reintroduction by claiming to arrest everyone else for reasons. Also, his design looks somewhat cooler for some reason. The whole Frosche thing was just wtf, and was a plot point that really didn't need to be brought up. Evil Rouge would've been fine from just all his guild members being killed, or just that Rouge was kinda a douche when he was first introduced, so kinda par for the course.
I don't have a problem with the revelations but about the way the flashback was told. So Zeref was talking to himself? At least the chapter made Zeref a little bit more interesting even though I still don't care about him. Also why didn't Zeref tell his Etherious that they were only created to kill him? It doesn't seem like they knew about their true purpose.
The "Frosch gets killed by Gray" storyline was really dumb.
And speaking of subtext, seriously what's the deal with these Erza panels staring at Natsu in the recent chapters?
436 was a better chapter than the latest OP chapters
Acnologia better be fleshed out like Raves Lucia.
436 was a better chapter than the latest OP chapters
The fuck did I just read?
I didn't realize there was a second chapter lmao. Oh boy was that so silly.
Anaconda looks like a negative of Gajeel. Zerf was randomly monologing. Natsu is….Hey wait. When what's his butt used that age barrier spell I wonder if Natsu having a dead but slowly aging body was the real reason he couldn't pass...Also wtf. Zerf has the worst ideas. Why would you use your own brother as the tool to kill you? That blood relation would greatly up the rate of that failing. Natsu screams friendship all day long no way would he kill a brother. The odds of him not finding out when they meet is probably low. The fight will end with a teary hug.
Also why didn't Zeref tell his Etherious that they were only created to kill him? It doesn't seem like they knew about their true purpose.
It's bugging me as well. Though, if he did, then there would be no plot other than bland guild scuffles where FT would still come at the top either way. Someone just had to hold idiot ball and run with it, which is Zeref has been doing for god knows how long.
What's worse is, it seems that they all have full version of Zerefgasm.exe installed in them instead of having some degree of free will to do anything else that has nothing to do with Zeref. The potential of having cast of powerful demons with varying view of their creator and the world itself is completely wasted.
First chapter meh. Second chapter, now that was amazing in my opinion. Finally get the origin of Zeref and Natsu, I'm
intrested in how there relationship will evolve from now on. Once Natsu learns the truth behind every thing, He'll no will
the guy be able to kill Zeref. They'll probaly find some way to cure the curse. I think the God that Zeref has been talking about could be the final threat actually, if that's able to do those things and of course Natsu will want to help him.

Maybe she realized he's stronger than her now.
Maybe she realized he's stronger than her now.
Erza has always been a major Natsu wanker tbh.
Erza has always been a major Natsu wanker tbh.
Sure, but it was never clear if he was stronger than her. Her feats were as impressive as his, even more so at times.
Then again, he was engineered to surpass everyone, so…
But… she's Erza!
436 was an amazing chapter. Now Fairy Tail is on another level!
The potential of having cast of powerful demons with varying view of their creator and the world itself is completely wasted.
Reminds me of Hunter x Hunter's Chimera Ant arc, but I can't see Mashima going anywhere with that theme anyway, it'd be brought up during the character's first appearance then quickly forgotten about the moment the 1v1's started.
Speaking of Tartarus it seems like the anime version is going to be expanded upon with some ideas that Mashima had scrapped for the manga version, 3(?) more demons and apparently Laxus will have a bigger role.
I laughed so hard at the group cheer, easily for two or three minutes
"We defeated this temporary menace with almost zero difficulty and are already together again and with none of the events that transpired in the last few days mattering at all! Yay Fairy Tail group cheers
the care bears look butch compared to these clowns

More like Laxus and co. will finally get to fodderize some demons before getting their asses handed to themselves.
For some reason, I was reminded of how pointless Q/A session in FT manga is. More often than not, Mashima gives roundabout ways of answering questions he himself doesn't know how to. Made worse that he uses his characters (Lucy & Mira) to answer the questions so they can casually go off-topic when he needs them to.

Your problem is that you're looking at it from a viewer standpoint. From their in-universe standpoint they just saved an entire town from being killed by a crazy death cult (which for some of them was a long-term ordeal) and had a big reunion after a year of being seperated. They've got a lot to celebrate about if you ask me.
I Just get that feeling that the latest arcs have been a total waste after reading 436. IMO Tartaros should come immidatelly after Tenroujima while this whole flashback should be given in 4/6 chapters split in theese two arcs. IT just feels it has no impact right now although the chapter was actually good and the Zeref flashback was awesome.

Don't really get why Lucy would cry 'I'm back' when everyone is back, but ah well. Feel good chapter I guess.
I know this is supposed to be a feel good chapter, but it really rings hallow. For us readers, there really wasn't anything there to have us feel anything. The chapters since the time skip have been like everything else, where they just meet up with characters again who are always at the forefront. Why should I be happy to see "girl who cut her hair" or "girl who learned magic", since they were never relevant. The whole idea of the guild getting back together doesn't work, because only so many get shown, and the rest are just there. The ones we could actually connect to Lucy were already shown, and we are supposed to be super happy about those we never saw her connect with.
If you wanted this reunion to actually have any impact, there needed to be a longer period of time (meaning more chapters) to let things sink in, and there needs to be connections to everyone. One Piece worked because there was a long period of chapters with everyone split up, and when they got back together, you were happy to see them again together because of that time and having emotional connections to them.
Like last chapter, this shows that Mashima can have moments that are good, but he can't properly build up to have it be effective.
So… that's it?
What a waste of build up.
I have no idea who half of those guys in the reunion pages are. Vijeeter? Kinana? And I only know Laki because we had a very small discussion about her some weeks ago.
I lked seeing Elfman though.

As far as I know, Kinana is Cubeiros, Cobra's winged snake who was actually a cursed human and Makarov returned her to her original form. Or smth like that but that was only explained in her entry on those minicovers Mashima does.
Want to place bets about next master? I'll say they'll go find Laxus for the role. If not, then maybe Erza. I don't think they're giving it to Natsu.
Or… as a completely unpredictable twist... Lucy.
the fairy tail loop, where everything keeps going back to be the same and you wonder what was the point in ..well..anything
Ugh, all guild master candidates suck.
I guess Erza or Laxus suck less. But Marcov after his temper tantrum, Mistgun being a closet Gerard, and Gildartz probably not being aware of this mess.
I guess that Mira could do it, she's mature, inteligent and strong. What's actualy impeding Maiv to take it back? The whole mess with her still living body in a crystal? She could be it in spirit, while someone less ethereal like old flame guy who was named the guildmaster already for the year that fairy tail survived without it's powerful members and leader already, sure he did an awful job, but if you keep only the crap like "guy with guns when everyone launches meteors", "guy who writtes on himself to make powerpoint presentations", "guy who comunicates through dances" or "girl in a magic guild that didn't know how to use magic untill 2 years in the story", it would take more than a year to even Nick Fury to whip them into shape.
Really hollow reunion though, it's like luffy reuniting with the water meat merchant in water 7, it's just so empty.. The strawhats were in fact separated for 2 years in real time the moment that the timeskip happened. This was.. 2 months? 3? with people that haven't been interesting in the past story of the manga, and other than the Elfman family, Cana or Luxus grupies I don't care. Oh, redus used to be fun when he was fat, now he doesn't even stand out in the background.
I personaly enjoyed the one punching of avatar because it's what fairy tail deserves, less hype, less time, less effort, and less stakes, because they are hollower than the usual shonen fare. And if you are going to be a joke and not be funny, at least be quick.

I'm imagining what Nick Fury would actually say or think if he tried making a team out of those people.
"I'm here to talk about the END program. What, your A-team is gone? Okay, I'll take the B-team."
The B-Team comes to headquarters
"Why did I go to this guild for recruits again? I would've been better off going to Quatropuppy"
Sweet Jesus, I never actually started to physically feel sick to my stomach while reading manga, but congratulations Fairy Tail you've set another milestone suckiness. I mean, my God, I have NEVER seen reunion that hollow and sappy…............Even a forest of Maple Trees would go "Jesus Christ, tone it down already Mashima!!"
To be fair to Vijeteer/Dancing guy, his magic is support type (his dances give strengh to his partners) and his bio, if I remember correctly, said that he was in the guild only to raise money to go to a dancing school.
I have too much memory for stupid details.
Wait, wait, wait wait, WAIT.
What happened to Avatar? Did the battle just end off screen? Was there no resolution? Nothing? What the fuck?
And jesus christ, we've gotten this guild friendship thing like five times now.
Avatar was beaten fully on camera past chapters, last weeks were a bunch of double chapters, you might have missed the end.
Also, after the 3rd "omg frienship is awesome" speech, every new speech will be equaly lame, and expected after every action.
So my thoughts on this chapter: Who the hell are most of these people?
So my thoughts on this chapter: Who the hell are most of these people?
This is my question as well. I don't remember any of these people. Laki and Vijeeter? Kinana? Never heard of them.
