So! Let's start this thread off… Are there any Plasma Cosmologists in the audience tonight?
Or we could talk about how pretty Saturn is. :)

I miss the status of planet of pluto…
It feels like they announce some newly found planet that could potentially support life every few months, and they're gonna keep doing this until I die.
Astrophysics are, like, totally cool, man. This guy here taught me that.
And the sequel song, which isn't as catchy, but more accurate.

saturn has best storm
like how does that even happen
I am going to love this thread <3
I'm sure this is outdated by now but good for a classic astronomy mindscrew.

I knew you'd be in here. The second I saw "Astronomy Thread", I put my life on the line that you were here.~

Europa, one of Jupiter's moons, has oceans on it.
There's a fun tidbit for today.

One of saturn's moons, Enceladus, has water on it as well, but more curiously, spits it out in to one of saturn's outer rings in the form of a giant geyser
posting this bc i LOVE hell planets
esp this one
Ah man, I remember reading this article about habitable planets and they said there was this one planet that was habitable only along its vertical axis. The planet's rotation had stopped so it was burning on one side and frozen (and dark) on the other. And along the habitable line they theorize that the plant life there is black because the skies are red and that's how the light would reflect off the surface.
I need to look it up but I will post it.

This isn't purely astronomical, but it is, I think, a very, very neat website, and certainly relevant if you scroll out instead of in:
Io is also pretty cool as moons go.
Also, the Opportunity Rover was launched ten years ago tomorrow and has been rolling around on Mars for over nine years now. Considering that it was only supposed to last three months, that's pretty impressive. Here's some of what it's been up to those nine years and a half.
I like mars well enough but it's soooo… dull
it'd be interesting if we could somehow kick start it's magnetosphere and kinda bring it back to life
I like Enceladus. Especially because of its ice Geysers.
Mimas looking like the Death Star never fails to amuse me.
When I have my own place I want to decorate some of the walls with posters of certain celestial nebulae and such. I've liked looking at that stuff ever since I was a little kid.

One of my favourite sites , always a nice scroll
Even though Pluto is no longer a planet, I am looking forward to NASA's mission, New Horizons to Pluto and its three moons. The probe should make its closest approach in July of 2015. Here is the link: http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/newhorizons/main/index.html
That probe's gonna be so disappointed when it reaches Pluto and discovers that it's no longer a planet.
Read this one recently…
http://www.livescience.com/37901-alien-planets-60-billion-habitable-exoplanets.html
… and no alien life found yet.
On the other hand, I would love to have a tiny black hole in my backyard for instant garbage disposal.
I'm into some astronomy, suresure. And anything to do with space. :P
Go a pair of small telescopes and stuff. Here's me with one of 'em during the Venus transit in 2012(big picture):

Total cardiac EXPLOSION Nonono! But no! Mars is really awesome! :cwy: You should check out some more of it, like for instance the THEMIS feature articles have some cool zoomable pictures with descriptions about what they think happened in the landscape.

Mars more like 'wow what awesome pictures of dirt we have here'
Mars more like 'wow what awesome pictures of dirt we have here'
So you've changed your mind! That's great! Dirty dirt is the dirtiest dirt that ever dirtied… Dirt? o,o? Eh.
I travel around the universe in my ship, the USS Enterprise, with my friends, Han Solo and Chewbacca. Does that count?
My first amateurish try to capture Jupiter.

It would also have great gas mileage, so you could run your car too.
Also
!
theoretically, if we could control black holes, we might not even need cars
Is this that devil magic stuff? I think I'll keep my kids, and my salvation, away from this thread.

@Holy:
whose the most bonable planet
Venus.
In the sense that it's the closest planet in proximity.
and check out the hahas
^ are those like dust clouds created by the atmosphere? They looks suspiciously similar to hurricanes from space

That looks pretty good! :) About the same I could achieve with my telescope at opposition. What did you use to capture it?

no those are Venus' twin hurricanes that rotate each other near the south pole
How haven't they merged yet?

I used a Celestron NEXstar 130. Which telescope do you have?

So i'm guessing venus has a horrible temper..I'm really surprised that tech allows us to view planets to this level of detail
given it's the closest planet but it's quite impressive through

Haha. :) A Celestron Astromaster 130EQ… Did you use a T-adapter? A barlow lens? What camera? :)
--- Update From New Post Merge ---
A little embarrassing since Leon had such a good picture, but here's one I took with my astromaster, T-adapter and a 1.5x barlow lens with a Canon EOS 50d.

sure sure, you've seen the pics of saturn and it's moons right? We've sent probes down on Venus and took actual color pictures of the surface. I think we were planning on sending some kind of weather balloon or something into the atmosphere in the near future.
Something something superrotation something.
I understand perfectly. So you're saying that it's a mystery pair of hurricanes, right?

I dont quite remember whether it was 1.5 or 2 since they were my colleague's. But i got 2x Barlow recently.
Here's my full kit:
Telescope: Celestron Nexstar 130, AVX Mount
Accessories: 2X Barlow, Celestron f6.3 focal reducer, Canon RC-6 remote, Backyard EOS, DSS, Registrax, GIMP
Imaging: Canon Rebel T4i 650D (currently having problem with it though) , Canon 18-55 mm lens Canon 55-250 lens, Neximage 5.

I'm thinking of getting a 5x, dunno how well it'll work though. :)

Cool stuff! :) Man that computerized mount must be so chill. I'm like always going "where the gosh darn is that stupid Polaris!!" :P Then when I found that stupid star I'll be twirling arrogant knobs that refuse to accept my superiority and just keep what I want in the field of view! >:(

5x is very good. I am too planning to get it, but you know..empty pockets. Maybe after 3-4 months.

Lol, i broke my first manual mount while trying to adjust it. Hence i bought the AVX. Right now, i can't do any imaging or observation due to monsoon climate at my place. Add light and air pollution to it, which makes things much harder. I have to travel 50-60 miles away for proper environment :( I am just a sitting duck for now :(

Empty pockets… I can relate. :cwy: Hahaha. :)

Monsoon. Crazy stuff. O,O Can't even imagine what light pollution must be in Mumbai! I have my telescope at my parents place, a city of like… 20k people and just that makes the light pollution terrible. I have a filter to get rid of some of the artificial light though which work pretty well.
Ah, also, in a month or so I'll be going up to the Swedish fells, man it gets crazy dark up there! You can see Andromeda with the naked eye and the milky way band and stuff! :)
