Starting next week, Weekly Shonen Jump US (that's my name for it, makes things easier) will start showing DBZ in full color. Starting at Chapter 195 (where the DBZ part starts).

I'm laughing at the people who complain that it takes up a spot as if this was like the Japanese jump and had a set number of series that could appear. The limit of series is almost certainly decided by cost effectiveness and resource availablity (as well as what SHueisha oks). A color version of dbz would use next to no resources when you consider the whole thing is already translated.

Seriously. And unlike print, more subscribers hardly means more resources being used. Down the road, as their wallets get fatter, I wouldn't be surprised to see the issues of WSJ double in size

Exactly. The limit to the number of manga in japanese wsj is almost certainly tied to the resource cost of adding pages to the issue (as well as the time and attention of editors, which is another factor that doesn't apply to american wsj anywhere near as much)

I've been doing some thinking about why One Piece is so outclassed by Naruto in the US, and I'm starting to feel like the biggest damage 4kids did to ONe Piece in America isn't that they ruined its reputation, but that they delayed interest in the series for many people that when they were replaced and word of mouth started to spread, the series had gotten so long that people were intimidated to jump in. I've heard a lot of people who say they'd read One Piece except that its so long and thus would a huge time (and possibly money depending on how they obtain it) commitment. Series like Naruto and Bleach are also really long, but because people got aquainted with the dubs and thus subs and scans relatively early, there was nowhere near as much of a gap between what they had seen and what they hadn't. And the gap is particularly bad if you want to read the series legiitmately, because you'd have to buy over $330 worth of manga (assuming you buy digital volumes since physical cost even more) just to catch up to the latest American release.
This has made me wonder why Viz doesn't release bundles of the long manga digitally. While I can understand the issue of physical omnibuses and demand and all that, setting up a digital bundle should have no extra cost to viz and should encourage at least a few more buyers. It'd also be good for people who got into one piece through scanlations, but want to support the series since having to spend that much on official releases is a bit intimidating. Better yet, they could release a ton of old volumes for free with a few ads for longer series, since honestly I don't think many people are still buying the original volumes -
One Piece is one of their best sellers. Just like Viz lists on their website, their top sellers can be summarized like this:
- Naruto
- Bleach
- One Piece
- Bakuman｡
- Rosario+Vampire
- Black Bird
- Vampire Knight
A lot of people still buy the volumes, don't worry.
And eventually there will be a decent omnibus edition of One Piece (digitally and/or physically) but I think that will only happen when One Piece is close to its ending or when its finished.

Is there anyway to get the Weelky Viz Shonen Jump in the UK, I tried getting their Android app but couldn't as I don't live in the correct region.

Unfortunately no, there are major international licensing hurdles to overcome before they can expand their coverage beyond North America, apparently. I would expect that when they do finally iron out some deals to reach overseas markets, the UK would be the first, since it's bound to be the largest and easiest to sell to–100% of the population can understand English, obviously.

I guess piracy still wins. I hope it keeps winning if SJA only stays at N.A/Canada. Reading the chapters online and buying the volumes is the most that I can do. Well…I guess I wouldn't mind that much if they got the OP volumes simultaneosly on retail. Is that possible?

They did it with NGE volume 13, so it's not impossible, but I'd have to say it's highly unlikely for One Piece or any of the weekly manga in WSJ. At least not any time soon.

I'm really happy I signed up for an alpha subscription. The quality is really good and it's nice to be able to read on a tablet. Plus I like reading the Jump series other than One Piece that I haven't followed in the past to see all the different art styles. The nice thing about it being a digital publication, which I think others have talked about above, is that Viz can take risks with different titles. I also was pleased to discover the omnibus editions of OP, since I had been buying the Viz volumes a bit when they first started releasing them, but I ended up having to sell them all when I was broke and needed fast cash (:() The omnibus versions seem like a better price anyway especially for a series as long as One Piece, and I like having a print version to flip through when I want to go back and read a particular part.

Speaking of the omnibus versions, the 5th one is coming out soon. I was surprised by how cheap they are, but I prefer the actual volumes though (plus the omnibuses are so behind and I own the volumes already).

Wow that's lame, it's not that hard of a thing to pick up on, I literally started watching anime last year and I caught on to the concept really fast. The viz volumes are becoming more and more unappealing. I wanted to buy some of them since I got the first one from the library and the quality is so freaking amazing compared to online scans. But I'm going to assume they don't use the word "nakama" or "okama way" or all the -kun and -san with each characters. No bon-chan. So irritating …

The costumer isn't getting any physical product. That on itself is a disadvantage for the costumer. He can't resell it as a used copy to someone as he would with the physical copy and in many digital services the costumer actually needs the service of the publisher to be functional just to view/read the product he bought. I don't know if that's the case with Viz since I've never bought a digital volume from them, but if their service is required just to view and read the volume that we buy from them, what happens if their online service shuts down someday? Take Tokyopop, for example. What if they had such a service when they shut down? Everybody would be unable to view or read the volumes they bought, they would just be gone;

Digital versions work best in rentals and subscriptions to periodic services like magazines. In my opinion, Viz should have a rent option in their digital manga volumes. 1 dollar or 1,5 dollar per volume. Perhaps 2 dollars. That would be the best use of the digital medium to me, to read a certain volume on the fly. As for the magazine, its great just as it is. Its price is great and so is the service. Also, the ownership concerns aren't that big of a deal with the magazine.
To actually buy and own a product, physical is and will alway be the best. A digital product that requires an external digital service to use is more of a rental with no time limit than an actual sale of a product, if you know what I mean.
Anyway, its great to have the digital option, we should just be aware of its advantages and disadvantages.
Btw, just to end the post on a positive note about digital manga, its advantages are:
- its cheaper;
- more convenient to buy and use;
- the art is crisper and clearer;
- the double spreads are much clearer;
- unless the service is discontinued, a certain volume is never out of print;
- it doesn't use up any shelf space or any other kind of space at all.

I'll have to get used to it, but supporting Oda and having a proper translation is worth buying the volumes. For the app at least, the download itself requires an internet connection; but actually reading the volumes you've already downloaded doesn't require any connection. But I see where you're coming from
Oh, and if Viz were to shut down, the website wouldn't exist but the app would still be functional. I have plenty of discontinued apps on my phone :P

Ironically, the word "gomu" was derived from "gum". This is also the case in most non-English-speaking languages (gomme for French, gummi for German, etc…).
In English, we use "gum" to refer to natural rubber and separate it from synthetic. And I'm pretty sure Luffy isn't synthetic, so...

my main problem is the the translation itself,especially of the early volumes.here's an excerpt which i found(online) wrong.this is a part of beckmen's conversation to luffy in the first chapter:"the safety of the entire crew rests on his shoulder.being a pirate isn't all fun and games,you know.thee's lots of duties like…pillaging,hostage taking ,heavy drinking,and swimming".i could point out more thinks like this.also,i see a distinct americanisation of things,like adding "damn" for no reason,using half-assed english to give it,i don't know,action-movie feel,basically translating in americanised way.
this is just from the first volume,and i have even read many bad reviews on amazon and other online sites regarding translations.

That sort of stuff stops really quickly. And Stephen who is currently translating is honestly pretty superior to any of the scanlation groups doing it. Not to mention how awful most of the current scanlators are anyways

really?does it?i'm afraid i need some assurance that it does.and i know that stephen is a brilliant translator,but how many of the volumes are actually translated by him?what about the ones he didn't translate?
but whatever.the point still stands that some(probably a lot) of viz's translations are wrong and bad,and so why should i buy such a product?
Though if they all did have the translations of stephen,i would consider buying them -
i'm pretty sure Stephen started translating around the timeskip.
