@Doke:
So don't get it… I'm sure you can find a way to get the chapters, or just stop reading all together, why air your grievances here?
Why not? Can no one speak against Viz? Is it a crime? Certainly not. If people feel the need to voice an opinion that is against the actions of a company, they are free to do so.
As a person who almost always supports Viz, has defended their decisions countless times, and who owns all 61 of the volumes currently available in the United States (that's about $600 I've spent in my lifetime), I find this action to not be the smartest, honestly. I wouldn't mind using Alpha if it was flawless- and it, realistically, isn't. The largest flaw is that some people do not want to pay for something that they eventually won't have access to. If I am investing money in an issue of Shonen Jump Alpha (aside from the fact that I'd be paying for about 5 other manga that I will not read, as One Piece is the only series offered there that interests me), I'd expect to always have access to it. After all, if I bought an issue of Shonen Jump, I didn't return it to the bookstore a few weeks after I read it. I kept it.
What can be done? Viz can look at what Funimation did for the Simulcast. The didn't entirely wipe out Fansubs. Not entirely. They're still around. BUT. People in America simply have no need for them. The product Funimation offers is of higher translation quality, and- the most important selling point- it's free, which is what people like! That's one of the reasons why they turn to fansubs in the first place! So, Funimation offered the simulcast for free. Effectively making me not watch fansubs. I had no more need to. But Funimation didn't NOT make money due to the simulcast. Nope, they had ads to make revenue from the "free" simulcast. And honestly, I don't mind sitting through an ad or two.
If Viz opened up the Shonen Jump website similarly to(not exactly like) a scanlation website, and maybe played an ad before being allowed to read a chapter, or put ads on the sides of the web pages where the scans appear (or both) to generate revenue and offered the chapters "for free", then I believe the backlash from people would not be as severe.
It worked for Funimation. I believe it can work for Viz, too.
