Regarding good old Armond; he's been booted off RT after his Jack and Jill review.
Really? What did he say?
-
Is there stuff after the credits?!
Just got back from my own viewing, and the answer is no. Once the rolling credits begin, that's all she wrote.
But really, by that time, nothing else needs to be said.
So we were running late to the theater, got some of the last tickets to the 6:55pm showing (on a Wednesday, in Canada! Not even Thanksgiving here!)l we were stuck in the very front. Missed most of the trailers (except "Tintin", "Brave" and Ghibli's "Arrietty", which I can't decide if I want to see dubbed or not.)
Thankfully, we got there in time for "Small Fry", which…Jesus guys, how much funny can Pixar put into 10 minutes?! Alot, apparently. The kid's meal toys are a freaking riot, and I totally have a new pickup line to use on guys:
! "You like Honey Mustard sauce? Yeeeeah, you do. >D" PFFFFFFFFFFFT.
But you guys want to hear about the meat and potatoes; The Muppets. Honestly, I'm not even going to tempt you guys to spoil any of it; just know the entire goddamn theater was cracking up through at least 80% of the movie, both kids and adults alike. Yes, sometimes you can tell it's different voice actors (mostly Fozzie) and there were a tiny handful of nitpicky things that pulled me out of the moment/or annoyed me (WTF to no Rizzo moments?!) The biggest peeve I have about it is
! Cutting away from Rainbow Connection for another scene backstage. WHAT?! YOU DON'T DO THAT!!! D8
But everything else was definitely what I wanted in this movie, funny and charming and heartwarming and everything a Muppet movie stands for. The music is catchy and 'Cluck You' will be in my head for days. And holy crap, some of the cameos were GENIUS;
! David Grohl. JACK BLACK. JIM PARSONS!
…And y'know what? I kinda like Walter. He can stick around.
Mr. Segel, Mr. Bobin, here's my wallet. I'll come watch anything else you guys ever make from now on, so long as you bring out another Muppet movie like this every once in awhile (I'll throw in my soul if you get a new Muppet Show going). Don't let the world forget again...
EDIT: Oh, and for those who care; when we were leaving the (PACKED) theater, there was a loooooong lineup waiting to get in for the next showing, which wouldn't be for another 20 minutes. I have no doubt that showing sold out as well. And this is on a normal, non-holiday Wednesday night.
This could be BIG, guys. Bigger than we thought before the reviews, and bigger than we think it'll be now. I can't wait to see the numbers as the weekend comes and goes...
-
Alright, I didn't see a thread for this or it's way too out dated so I am making a new one. Anyways..
This movie was amazing. A absolute love letter to the fans. And now I have this song in my head:
-
Topic is here :P
-
Hmmm, the first day Muppets has grossed 6.6 million, according to BoxOfficeMojo (Twilight is still ahead. Fucking Twilight).
But we shall see how the weekend as a whole goes. I'm assuming more people didn't see it on the 23rd or today because of the holiday.
-
@LUFFY#1:
Alright, I didn't see a thread for this or it's way too out dated so I am making a new one. Anyways..
I'm tempted to retitle the thread, just for the temporary, so people can find this thread while the movie is still out. Since this is the second time this has happened.
But I dunno, I think there's a fair bit of magic in discovering it as is.
But we shall see how the weekend as a whole goes. I'm assuming more people didn't see it on the 23rd or today because of the holiday.
I would have seen it yesterday if I could, but schedules being what they are, and wanting to avoid the traffic of Black Friday, I'll see it with friends on Saturday. I imagine that'll be the case for most people.
-
@RobbyBevard:
Really? What did he say?
I'm assuming good things since that movie currently has only a 4% on RT.
-
I'm assuming good things since that movie currently has only a 4% on RT.
Yeah, but he's been completely contrary on other stuff too. The only time he ever agreed with the majority was when it was split right down the middle, the stuff thats at like 52%. EVERYTHING else, Captain America, Toy Story 3, etc he hated, and bad stuff he gave positives for.
-
Well, it may not be THE Muppets, but NBC's working with the Jim Henson crew to make a new puppet-themed TV Show, called The New Nabors. It's a step in the right direction?
Kermit, Miss Piggy and the rest of their beloved puppet friends return to the big screen today in The Muppets. And apparently, they want back in on the small screen too. This time next season you may find yourself singing about watching “the Muppet show tonight,” as NBC has picked up a new comedy from the Jim Henson Company.
Like the company’s new big-screen adventure, The Muppets, and NBC’s 1980s hit Alf, this new show will tackle human-puppet interaction.
The New Nabors will follow a human family who has to cope with their new neighbours who are, you guessed it, puppets.
There is no word (yet) on whether this will include some of the original Henson creatures we know and love, or if it will feature completely fresh characters like The Muppets’ new addition, Walter.
The show should follow in the kid- and adult-friendly footsteps of the original Muppet shows and films. It is being executive-produced by John Riggi, who currently works on 30 Rock, and was given an (easy) green light by Lisa Henson, the daughter of the famous American puppeteer.
-
Well, that's something!
I do hope for a return of the classic show. Judging by the number of big-name celebrities who jumped at the chance to have a cameo in this movie (that I've heard about), I'd say they'd all be happy to be guests on the show as well.
-
I could picture it now, a show on Disney Channel in 2012. Airing every Sunday night at 7pm.
-
Classic bit from the show's first season. Always loved the word play on this.
[hide] -
Saw it, loved it. It was sublime, everything I could have wanted in a Muppets movie!
I totally cried like a little girl during Rainbow Connection (so did my date, so it's not too bad ^_- )
-
Saw it last night! Oh my God, my JAW hurt from laughing so much. I knew it would be funny, but I didn't expect it to be THAT funny. Well done, Jason Segel!
I actually didn't cry during any of it, no, not even during Rainbow Connection, but my heartstrings got tugged. Neither do I think it's as good as the original Muppet Movie, but damn is it close. I have some quibbles here and there, mostly about pacing, but at the end of the day I was grinning from ear to ear. My theater (which was pretty full) applauded afterwards, and we all went home happy. That's all that matters.
And now I need to get some songs for my iPod.
-
Huge Muppet fan since I was a wee one. Saw movie. Liked it.
But Kermit's so damned sad for most of the movie that I found it off-putting. Seriously, that conversation he has with Fozzie. What's up with that?
-
Why is The Muppets coming out in the UK in February? I want to see it now dagnabbit.
-
@Oga:

Also question why aside from Children in Need we have seen little hype for this film at all. Even Disney DVD releases like Lion King and Cars 2 doesn't even hint at it's existance. No worries. There's yet another Tinkerbell film coming out. Only Spooky Buddies Blu-Ray of all things had a brief trailer for it. SPOOKY BUDDIES. THE THING WITH THE PUPPIES.
But by then the film should be out on Blu-Ray in America. I'll just pick it up then and save the money I'd spend buying from here and a cinema ticket.

Really? Only Spooky Buddies? Oh boy. Why do us Brits always get the short end of the stick?(Does that saying make sense in this context?) If it is out in the states by then I'll probably just do the same as you. Then we can enjoy Kermit and the gang over and over again, Yay!
-
Went and saw it today. Absolutely loved it. Even better than I expected.
! The heart and humor of the movie was just phenomenal. I mean, there are just too many moments to name. I loved Jack Black. I loved Waldorf and Statler's 4th-wall-breaking joke. Loved the Richman rap. And it was so satisfying seeing them singing the Muppet Show theme after so many. And then of course them singing Rainbow Connection. Just…...wow.
! Now for some quibbles:
! -The Moopets seemed to be mostly pointless
-The songs, while nice, weren't exactly memorable
-The resolution of Richman giving back the Muppet's name and studio should've been done before the credits sequence. It was really distracting with the Muppets celebrating and talking about starting over knowing they couldn't since Richman owned the Muppet name. But better late than never I guess.
! Aside from those and a few other things, the movie was great. I highly recommend it. -
Just got back from it. It was pretty much everything I wanted from it. A good chunk was indeed spoiled by the soundtrack, but thats my own fault for not holding off. The soundtrack DOES have extended versions of several of the songs however, or versions that aren't covered by dialogue.
! I didn't cry, but Kermit's song nearly got me. And I knew from the soundtrack that it would. And the really subtle plot point that Frank Oz complained about "Kermit wouldn't live in a mansion"… I liked that it was PIGGY that bought the mansion... Kermit was just staying there waiting for her to come back. There was a lot of emotion and history in those couple lines of dialogue. I guess the photo was from the end of Muppets take Manhattan?
! I would have liked to have seen more of the Gary/Mary subplot, but hey, you don't go to a Muppet movie for the humans.
! When the villain's evil laugh really IS the words "Maniacal laugh" you know its the muppets. I wonder if thats something that was in the script, or if it was just sort of the script note said "Maniacal laugh" and he went literal with it.
! Jack Black was actually really good there, as an unwilling participant. And the scene where Kermit was aghast at the kidnapping was hilarious. "THE KIDNAPPING IS WORSE FOZZIE!" Good stuff. This isn't the first time Whoopi Goldberg has appeared with the muppets. During their last Christmas movie, she played the role of God. Hrm.
! I loved the reveal on the telethon payoff. "Oh, I feel better now, we weren't anywhere close!"
! As for resolving some of the plotlines during the credits sequence, I dunno. I thought it was funny to offhand it like that. Made it a final gag instead of something they had to dwell on.Anyway, none of you need convincing. You're already either going to see it, or you aren't. Its exactly what you expect and want it to be. Its Muppets. I'd love to see this team give it another go in a couple years where they aren't trying to revive the franchise.
I went with a friend who doesn't know the Muppets as well, so a lot of the injokes were missed, and the fourth wall breaking surprised them… but that's Muppets for ya.
! -The resolution of Richman giving back the Muppet's name and studio should've been done before the credits sequence. It was really distracting with the Muppets celebrating and talking about starting over knowing they couldn't since Richman owned the Muppet name. But better late than never I guess.
! Well, the point of that was, they were together again, a family again. They'd gotten together just for the one night to reach the one goal. And that fell apart… and it wasn't important. Staying together was. It would have rung false if they'd raised 10 mill (from a 2 hour telethon no less) and they then stayed together just to keep performing. They grew apart when it was just the show keeping them together before. It was more personal that it didn't matter anymore.
Intereting side note, Tex Richman actually has a much more detailed backstory in the soundtrack…
! and a much longer song number.
! im tex richman

@RobbyBevard:
! I loved the reveal on the telethon payoff. "Oh, I feel better now, we weren't anywhere close!"
! I was thinking about that. So does that mean the first people who contributed only game them 30 cents? (I think that was the amount). Tough economy.

! Well, regardless of whether they raised the 10 mil or not, I just had trouble getting into the big finale, knowing that, even though they were back together and were a family, they couldn't be the Muppets anymore. It was just really distracting.
-
! I was thinking about that. So does that mean the first people who contributed only game them 30 cents? (I think that was the amount). Tough economy.
! Well, it WAS Sweetums manning the line. I think there might be some margin for error there.

Ah, but will it be distracting the next time you see it?
-
@RobbyBevard:
Ah, but will it be distracting the next time you see it?
No, but I think the first viewing still does count for something.
At any rate, it's a minor complaint. Still an excellent movie.
-
I guess I wasn't really bothered with it… and in fact thought it was a refreshing twist on the old cliche. But I can easily see why it would be awkward too.
-
! Did anyone else think it was odd that all the Muppets seemed so estranged? Separated I could understand, but it was heartbreaking to see that they apparently had no contact with each other. That conversation with Fozzie where Kermit admitted he hadn't really been in touch was depressing as hell and a little out of character.
! Similar plotline in Muppets Take Manhattan, but at least they were writing each other letters. -
@RobbyBevard:
! When the villain's evil laugh really IS the words "Maniacal laugh" you know its the muppets. I wonder if thats something that was in the script, or if it was just sort
! It is mentioned in the movie by the blue hench-muppet with the evil british accent that Richman is incapable of laughing. So it seemed to me like it was definitely on purpose, but the way they casually drop that line (it was probably assuming the full rap number would be included) made me go "huh, it's more than just a joke, it's a plot device". After he gets Head-bowled, he's cracking up.
-

That conversation with Fozzie where Kermit admitted he hadn't really been in touch was depressing as hell and a little out of character.
! Similar plotline in Muppets Take Manhattan, but at least they were writing each other letters.! Nah, that happens in real life all the time. Even with actual blood family. My best friend in the world still lives in the same city as I do, but due to life and schedules and jobs getting in the way, I only talk to him once in a blue moon, and only see him once or twice a year. And I have other friends who I once talked to daily, that I talk to much more rarely now. People grow apart, especially when they no longer have the same glue of a job or school holding them together, and especially if they have an argument or a spat.
! And while they don't get specific or dwell on it, its clear Kermit and Piggy had a really big fight about getting married after having dated for many years… and Piggy even buying a house for them together. It's REALLY easy to lose touch with someone, even someone you love, when there's a period that you don't want to talk to them for a while.
! Plus careers pull them in different directions. In MTM they'd only been seperated for a little while, its easier to keep track of then.
! That's why the ending was so important that they FAILED... and decided it didn't matter. They had come together "one last time" to do "one last show", and realized in the course of it, they're family, not just co-workers, and shouldn't split up again, even if they couldn't be famous anymore.
! They don't give an exact time frame, but it's clearly supposed to have been at least 10 years since they were last together. If its hewing to real life, which it was, while they've had projects over the years they haven't been big since the 80's.
! (They had a lot of characters who were introduced in Muppets Tonight, which was mid 90s)On a separate note, I kind of hate that the movie is called "The Muppets". Thats just so vague and blends into discussion. Are you referring to the actors, the movie, or the original "The Muppet Movie". I know its original title of "The Greatest Muppet Movie Ever" was never going to work, but SOMETHING a little more distinct would have been nice. Right now its the current movie but that's going to make it really awkward eventually.
-
My biggest quibble with the movie was the pacing. My friends and I agreed that it seemed there was a lot that was taken out for the final cut.
Just makes me hope we get a longer director's cut on the DVD.
-
Yeah, it was definitely edited for faster pacing. At the very least, if the soundtrack is any indication, several of the songs were a lot longer, and one of them had a lot of exposition in it.
-
Personal little bits that made my inner Muppet squee in joy:
! -quick cameo of one of the masks from one of my favorite sketches in the background of a scene with (I believe) Ms. Piggy:
-a perfectly-placed photo of Kermit with Jim Henson during "Pictures in a Frame"
! -Rainbow Connection. It was almost unfair, I don't think there's anything else more guaranteed to get the tear ducts working for an old-timey Muppet fan.
! -Rowlf getting the best gag of the movie. ("Heh…classic.")
! -Kermit doing the classic "Kermit arm-flail" in the Muppet Show intro -
Okay, I just came back from seeing it.
[hide]I loved it. ^_^
Comments:
+Watching Muppets: Letter From Santa, I had low expectations for the music. But actually, the music was pretty damn good.
+The celebrity cameos were all well done. None of them seemed forced, expect Selena Gomez to an extent, but she bothered me none. Nothing against Selena Gomez at all, she just felt a bit forced. I didn't even mind Sarah Silverman, and I can't fucking stand her.
+I loved Animal's resistance toward playing the drums.
+There was just enough usage of Gary, Mary, and Walter to not take away from the Muppets element of the movie, but still get their point across.
+I really liked the song Kermit sang at his home. I don't remember the name of the song, but that was the part when I began to get watery eyed.
+I seriously loved every skit they did in the Muppet Show. Especially the barber shop (fucking lol at "Mee Mee Mee Mo!") and one….other.
++Rolf's flashback. Hilarious.
++Gonzo's retirement from his plumbing company. FUCKING HILARIOUS! Just to think that he had that costume underneath his clothes all this time, waiting constantly for the moment where the Muppets would come back for him. Not only that, but preparing a fucking "Nuke everything" button in case his friends come back. I mean, "YES! My friends are here! Fuck my company! FUKITFUKITFUKITFUKITFUKI~BOOM!" I laughed so hard the entire time. The second he revealed the button and started screaming, "RUN!", I lost it.
++I already loved Bobo, but I really love the new dragon guy. He's funny.
+++Rainbow Connection. Cried. Tears. Endless. They should have shown Animal the drumstick before the song, but either way, I cried.+/-A lot of the people I watched it with complained that the movie was too corny, but honestly....IT'S THE MUPPETS! I adore the Muppets, but they are corny. They always have been, but for you to look +/-I had a hard time looking at Jason Segel and trying to accept him as his character. Not only due to his full frontal nudity in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, but also due to the fact that I watched him call someone a cunt yesterday, watching "Bad Teacher" (which I very much liked).
-Walter's talent disappointed me.
-I agree with everyone, it did very much pace a little to fast.
-The villain rap was painful.Otherwise, I absolutely loved it.[/hide]
-
++I already loved Bobo, but I really love the new dragon guy. He's funny.
He's actually been around for a while, he just doesn't get used much. I think he was in Muppets Tonight.
I had a hard time looking at Jason Segel and trying to accept him as his character.
I've never seen him in anything else, so I had no problem with it at all. Especially considering he's the driving force behind the movie happening at all.
! -The villain rap was painful.
It was three times longer on the soundtrack.
-
[hide]-The villain rap was painful.[/hide]
WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT?!!
@RobbyBevard:
He's actually been around for a while, he just doesn't get used much. I think he was in Muppets Tonight.
! Apparently, this is Uncle Deadly's (that's the guy's name) first appearance in anything Muppet-related in 30 years. At least according to Wikipedia (the fountain of all indisputable knowledge)
-
Ah, was he in the original show? Well, I knew he was an existing character.
I probably need to pick up those box sets. Shame they never got around to releasing seasons 4 and 5…
-
I definitely remember him in the original show. If my memory serves me right he was in one of the musical numbers in the Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCartney episode.
And Insider:
! What do you mean the villain rap was painful?! It was fucking hilarious!
-
The only thing that really disappointed me were the lack of cameos. I was expecting a whole lot more. There were reportedly supposed to be more, including Charles Grodin.
! My favorite line was was in regards to the Muppets signing their name away. I thought it was a clever inside jab at Disney.
-
aint seen the film but is the Dragon guy you mean the Great Uncle Deadly? He was in the earlier episodes. In the Halloween one and again in one episode where he was Haunting the Muppet Theatre. They're in series 1 I think. Maybe 2.
-
@The:
The only thing that really disappointed me were the lack of cameos. I was expecting a whole lot more. There were reportedly supposed to be more, including Charles Grodin.
I'm guessing that may have also been a product of too much editing which affected the pacing. Again, I'm hoping for a director's cut on DVD that has longer scenes and more cameos.
-
I was really hoping for a Charles Grodin cameo, was disappointed. On the other hand, I'll accept the tradeoff for also not having the much ballyhooed Lady Gaga cameo.
-

Yes, that's him.
I didn't see Clifford or that new bunny guy they introduced toward the end of Muppet Babies that ended up getting his own puppet later. But it was odd that Pepe was there, isn't he one of the "new" Muppets?
-
Yes, that's him.

Cus they think everyone loves Pepe. I personally hate him.
And I'm fairly sure I recall seeing Clifford in the trailers tho. Was in the background in the crowd scens too. Is he not on the movie poster too?
For those who have seen it how are Rowlf, Sam and Lew Zealand in it? Those three are probably my faves…even if it is hard to decide on a favourite Muppet
-

! Rowlf was lovable as always, Sam didn't get much screentime, but the time he did get was pretty funny, same goes for Lew.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Oho, this is interesting (warning: MAJOR SPOILERS in this article):
http://collider.com/muppets-original-ending-deleted-scenes/128940/Apparently the ending we got wasn't the original ending. And after reading what it was, I wish we had gotten the original. Not that I didn't like the final ending, but I think this ending fits better.
-
Daww, I just found out this isn't coming out in my country until February. Boo.
-
Life's a Happy Song, as apparently seen on Dancing with the Stars last week.
[hide]Apparently the ending we got wasn't the original ending. And after reading what it was, I wish we had gotten the original. Not that I didn't like the final ending, but I think this ending fits better.
Well, that explains a lot.
! And why Tex's song was three times longer on the soundtrack. And mostly it explains why that bit over last second exposition was tacked on in a quick throwaway line in the end credits.
! I wish they'd stuck with that first ending. I think that particular gesture, of Statler and Waldorf donating the last dollar, might have broken me.
! I understand wanting to push harder the theme of being a unified family and failing here doesn't matter, and it was a really mature message (heck, I've been explaining that point) but since they backed out on that at the last second anyway… I think I might have liked the other way better.Hopefully the dvd will have the alternate and cut bits.

Well, we've got some numbers for the movies' first weekend. No surpise as Twilight was at the top, buuuuut:
Aiming at a much different demographic this weekend was family friendly "The Muppets," which rode positive buzz to a solid opening of $29.5 million. Adding in the extra days around Thanksgiving, "The Muppets" ended up with a $42 million five-day total, which is a strong opening for a $45 million production.
The most impressive part of "The Muppets" opening was that it had to compete with a slew of new releases and still ended up as the clear top family-geared earner. With no wide releases scheduled for next weekend, "The Muppets" should be able to put together a nice second weekend and could make a serious run at $100 million domestically by the time it wraps up its theatrical run.
Now THAT'S what I want to see. They've more or less paid for the movie in the first 5 days!
With some word of mouth promotion from the audience from this past week, and no huge movies coming out until the 16th (Sherlock Holmes 2, Mission Impossible, Chipmunks 3), we have a few solid weeks for some serious box office growth…
-
More details on cut scenes.
And an interview with Segal talking about how he hopes the dvd will estore some stuff.
http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/jason-segel-hopes-movie-will-lead-to-return-of-muppet-show-says-original-cut-was-three-hours-longMostly what we already knew. Different ending, Tex Richman's backstory, celebrity cameos, bits of several of the songs… but also
! apparently a scene with Gary and Walter’s mom. Other rumored scenes included more with ‘80s Robot, The Moopets, and Waldorf and Statler.
! > In an interview with Collider about the movie, Bobin confirmed, unsurprisingly, that many scenes were cut from “The Muppets.” He specifically notes that “bits and pieces” were cut from songs. (“The Rainbow Connection” song, for instance, was truncated.) When asked about deleted scenes, Bobin acknowledges the script itself was quite long, with many cuts about characters or celebrity cameos made due to screen time. But Muppets fans who had been closely following news of the movie expected to see more celebrity cameos, including Wanda Sykes and Danny Trejo in a prison scene with the Muppets; the two made an appearance in a parody trailer for “The Muppets” based on “The Hangover, Part II.”
Other confirmed celebrity cameos missing from the film: Billy Crystal, Ricky Gervais, Liza Minelli, French Stewart, Mila Kunis and Ben Stiller.
And among the other celebrity cameos rumored or reported to be in the movie: Lady Gaga in a show-down with Miss Piggy that reportedly would have included John Krasinski (who does appear elsewhere) Ed Helms and Eric Stonestreet (of “Modern Family,” and who denied being in the movie back in June).
Apparently, the rough cut of the movie was THREE HOURS LONG. The movie doesn't need to be 80 minutes longer, (15-25 would be great though) but that much editing does show.
I know movies cut snippets for pacing all the time, and usually the deleted scenes are cut for good reason, but it sure seems like we lost a lot.
-
I ain't watched the movie yet and am steering away from spoilers but…what do you think are the chances for an uncut DVD release?
-
@Thousand:
I ain't watched the movie yet and am steering away from spoilers but…what do you think are the chances for an uncut DVD release?
After finding out that the original cut is 3 hours long? Zero.
But with the song numbers restored (especially since they're intact on the soundtrack) and cameos put back in, adding an extra 20 minutes or soto clock it in at about 2 hours? Even if its just in bonus features? Pretty likely.

I'm not really sure how The Muppets is working. They're now owned by Disney right? And it's taking place of the Disney 'Classic' this year. So are we to assume it's going to be labelled as such? I'm sure with that it'll mean we'll get a load of the special editions or not. I think we'll see most of the filmed parts on the DVD/Blu-Ray. Of couse I guess it'll also come down to the cameos wanting royalties for their brief appearences in the deleted scenes too.
