Bet he didn't even think of doing that prior his bankai. Maybe Kubo thought it's uncool for someone like Zaraki to swing that oversized meat cleaver with two hands.
If he swung it with two hands, maybe his body could have handled it.

This reminds me of Chad's explanations about Ichigo's Bankai, the power is used in a way of cloth to envelop the user and upgrade his stats plus looking cool. Yachiru just released the power and Kenpachi put it in his body, nothing else. He has to do something with the power; creating a swordcraft to maintain it or a cloth like Ichigo, plus looking cool.
If he swung it with two hands, maybe his body could have handled it.
Looking back, his two-hand sword swing probably was the most out-of-character moment for Zaraki. He's always been about unrefined brute strength and pure instinct. However, Kubo accentuates those aspects of him way off the scale. Zaraki is turned into ultimate idiot, with no thought process, cooperation skill nor capability of learning whatsoever, so much that comparing him to a wild beast might actually be an insult to the latter.
Awesome Ellen-sensei icon!
Thanks. It's one of the cutest and SFW fanarts of her
Ellen Baker knows how to swing with both hands
From what I've seen, she can swing both ways.

Two hands getting torn off I would expect if single hand swing torn off Kenpachis arm like that. Stronger swing would tear both arms.. I wonder how sometimes I read posts of people that complain after getting one idea and they dont even think a bit further after first idea for complaining.. silly dont ya think?
Btw I liked how Gerard grown so big that it was too difficult for him to directly hit Kenpachi- plot armor at its best but also thats cool way to show how gigantic Gerard now gotten.

Idk, don't ya think that smiley actually serves some purpose?
Seemed to me that it's because Zaraki overworking his right arm that when Yachiru fails to adjust the power output, that very arm is the first one to get crippled. It's like trying to cut a tree with an axe with just one hand.
Thought you guys might find my school lunch discussion with the kids amusing:
So it's my first day back in school after spring break and we're talking about various animus and mangoes (triggered by the Osomatsu-san bag of one of the girls–by the way, it was hilarious how she kept talking about "Fappymatsu" and the boy adjacent her was shushing her to stop lol). Then she goes "Glib-sensei, by any chance, do you know Bleach?"
I of course have to pretend to that my psyche is not 10% mocking Bleach but answer "Oh yeah, totally, I used to love it when I was younger. If I recall correctly there's now a big Quincy war or something?"
And she starts gushing about how she has all the volumes and DVDs and her heart broke when Ishida turned traitor and her favorite character is Hitsugaya.
"Hitsugaya, that's the ice captain, right?" I answer as though I do not possess uselessly encyclopedic knowledge of the characters of Bleach
And now she's waiting for them to make an anime out of everyone's favorite 1,000 year blood war
--- Update From New Post Merge ---
Also, she was wondering aloud what the anime was that played on Sunday where there was a blond hero guy sitting on a refrigerator a schoolboy was lugging. I shit you not.
"My Hero Academia. I recommend it, it's a great series!"

I](https://dragonics28.wordpress.com/2016/04/19/bleach-670-kenpachi-has-more-chill-than-hitsugaya/) was not impressed with just ditching Kenpachi with his bankai just to go to Hitsugaya with a new powerup. Really cheapened the bankai moment for me, and many fans have been wanting for years.

I remember the days when someone going Bankai was an "oh, shit" moment. (ex. Ikkaku, Ichigo, Soi)
Now in this arc we've had like….4 or 5?, but overall it doesn't feel as "special" when someone whips it out? (heh heh). But to be fair, that's akin to Super Saiyan in Dragonball - it was pretty jaw-dropping to see Goku or Vegeta unveil it the first time, but subsequently it just became a thing you noticed in the panel.
Gear Second in One Piece has gotten down the same route, it's all tied to when the enemies just get to the point where they're really strong and you need such a form from the get-go.
Damn, look how cool I am!
I'm quite surprised that his pants aren't riding up in his Bundesliga

At least it seems like the 3 of them will finish Gerard with a combo attack.
Don't see Ken-chan in any of those pics.
His only contribution so far was making Gerard stronger.
Unless his ability has DOT or something.
Okay. That was actually pretty cool.
http://readms.com/r/bleach/671/3365/1
Colour me surprised. I actually liked this chapter. It was quite nice! Disappointed that Hinamori(?) and the Visoreds were useless again, but they've been useless since forever and they've disappeared from the fight for over a month anyway.
I gotta say, i actually liked grown up Hitsugaya. He looks a lot better…..
3 way combo attack to finish him off.
Not bad.
Though i have to wonder, where the fuck are the Royal Guard in all of this? Kenpachi got wrecked by that hand, lost an arm, but still recovered pretty quick, its been well over a day since the REG got beaten.....
You know, I was wondering when would Gerard actually use that bow that Quincies are so well know.
The chapter itself was fun, but Hitsugaya parts look like fan fiction.
Very good chapter. Fight with Gerard was great if thats all of it.
I liked that we still had teamwork from "good guys" team that possibly gotten them closer to beating Miracle Man.
My only problem is that it had to be those three. Kubo couldn't have let the visored team up to take him out. Would have been a good point to show off their bankai. Sigh. I don't understand how freezing Gerard's sword stops its ability.
But now I'm getting flash backs to the aizen team up, and I am seriously thinking that we'll see Hinamori was turned into a pin cushion.
Yeah, while on paper it seems cool the execution just didn't work out. The fight just felt soulless and didn't get me excited at all. I will say the panel with all those swords was overall cool.
nice chapter.. but the fact that 2 chapters ago zaraki went ape sh!t and lost, and now hitsugaya goes full bankai and even though considered an asspull, he sill doesn't own gerard..
seriosuly kubo.. you get 3 fan fave characters in one fight and you don't know how to use them properly..
Stop tickling his feet, Zaraki
The large panel of Hitsugaya saying "I age a bit" is kinda punch-your-monitor tier.
Anyways, yeah. Hitsugaya's bishonen upgrade pretty much gives him the advantage all the way through, including within-four-second freeze everything? But Gerard is a stubborn one, and he doesn't go down too easily. Kenpachi (off-screen) in his regular mode cuts his feet or something, than Byakuya unleashes an attack….that actually looks pretty killer.
Although really, this fight could've gone to the Vizards or Shinji/Momo team-up, not three captains that get overexposure as is.
I kinda feel that this borrowed from Nanao-Lille and Urahara-Askin, in that here comes the very specific power and/or skills to shut down the seemingly invincible god Quincy. I think part of this lies in whatever abstract power Kubo gives to the Stern Ritters, so the established zanpakutou has to do something also abstract to fight in the same field.
If you think this fight is over you must be naive. :ninja:
Get ready for twist powers out of the a** number 99. xD
inb4 a Miracle in surviving.
Then someone says "there's no such thing as miracles" as the one-liner when he finally dies.
I kind of feel I have to make a comment about Bleach's chapter despite it being so uninteresting out of some sense of obligation. So, well, pretty sure Gerard is alive - nobody threw a smug comeback about miracles as he fell.

Lol. I think I said that would be the killing blow for him a couple weeks back too.
I'm always a fan of teamwork against big opponents (crew vs Oars is seriously underrated), but this fight is still done in by the Curse of Smugness. Kubo just can't help himself when it comes to making his heroes aloof and "kewl", but when the potagonists' look untroubled, wheres the tension? When the heroes don't look like they give a shit, why should we? I experienced a brief flicker of interest when Shrimpo got caught and it seemed like he was off guard, but then its just turned into yet another "did you REALLY think that this was wise Yaaaaawn" and fuck that noise.
Plus, like Glib said, its all about the execution - namely, it sucks. here we get kenpachi in bankai mode, with little fanfare or buildup, and before thats even explained we shift to Hitsus' long awaited complete bankai, which its time for now I guess. The present conflict isn't exciting enough, the focus hasn't been strong enough that you can just trot out "heeeeeeeeres the powerup!" and thats good enough. You commited to giving almost every character a teased, personal powerup Kubo, you need to follow through and give the powerups some damn context.
But everyone, remember that Quincy Thor is supposedly the "Heart of the Soul King", whatever that means, so don't count him out just yet. I know I wouldn't mind him turning into a Grandia 2-style abomination; it might even make the heroes sweat for a little bit.
Did I already lose that bet, Daz?
lets see….
Our guesses 1 year ago:
Daz: 90 more chapters, 707 end, 36 to go
Detectivekillua: 83 more chapters, 700 end, 29 to go
King Cannon: 43 more chapters, 660 end, -10 to go
Kouch Lee: 70 more chapters, 687 end, 16 to go
Metamario: 68 more chapters 685 end, 14 to go
Yeah, it appears so. I don't think anyone counted on almost 40 chapters dedicated to the elite quincies alone, so between haschwald, Bach, flashbacks and back-up arrivals, we may all lose in the end. If Bach summons up some arrancar cronies or a flaming skeleton horde or something, this could easily last 50 chapters.
@Daz:
Metamario: 68 more chapters 685 end, 14 to go.
Damn. We still have a lot of stuff to go through!
I didn't quite get that part where Hitsugaya's ice stopped Hoffnung from fixing itself.
Why the fuck would a magical sword care if it's frozen or not.
Next, reishi bow gets frozen. Probably because reishi attracts a lot of moisture around it, right? Or Hitsugaya can't do anything else but freeze stuff harder now. It's like they say, kids have the best imagination.
I'd also like to know why his Zanpakuto boosts his stats so he can use it properly after the petals fall off.
I realize none of this will ever be mentioned again.
I didn't quite get that part where Hitsugaya's ice stopped Hoffnung from fixing itself.

tl;dr: It's magic ice.
Long explanation: All powers in bleach seem to function on reiatsu, so if reiatsu created ice completely stops the rei- you know what, I'm just going to call them what they are: magic atoms. If ice made of magic atoms stops the movement of other magic atoms then the super powers that those other magic atoms create stop working. That's my understanding of what's going on.
As people have said, the execution wasn't great, and I still don't get why Hitsugaya's shirt was unbuttoned beyond fanservice. Saying he doesn't like this form was pretty hilarious, given that's all we'll be getting from fanart for the next three years.
As far as his bankai+ goes, it seems like the next logical step in powering up. Quickly freeze on contact, generally better physical skills, and freezes all functions of stuff. The basic strategy of Hitsugaya freezes and then Zaraki or Byakuya severs seems pretty sound.
Ass far as ass pulls go, this one's only about an inch deep.
I don't know how a bankai makes you grow older.
Oh Kubo.

If that sword was a machine with a lot of moving parts, it would make sense maybe.
If Hitsugaya's ability was slowing or suspension of molecules like Sinbad does it in Magi, it would work. But he creates ice out of water and moist from the atmosphere. Of course, next step of his Bankai is to be able to freeze stuff harder, but I don't have to pretend like it's perfectly fine for an author to apply cartoon logic whenever he writes himself into a corner.
If Hitsugaya's ability was slowing or suspension of molecules
That is his ability. That's what happens when things get cold. They slow down on an atomic level and when it's magical spirit ice made in an plane of afterlife existence it stands to reason maybe it's freezing more than just "water and moisture."
Didn't Rukia have the same ability, only she applied it to herself to uh…be "dead" to avoid As Nodt's fear attack.
Which makes me remember a point I thought of earlier, why even have Hitsugaya at all when, if your wanted to freeze Giganthor, you already had an ice user on hand? Seriously, the "team battle" aspect of this fight is badly undermined by the fact Kubo basically replaced the team we started with.

Poor Shinji will always job.

As in always being defeated or eternally patient while his creator continually kicks the shit out of him for no good reason?

Mix of both, really. I'm expecting him to explain his Bankai in full detail if/when we see it. It is his obligatory weakness after all.

Shinji's hardly alone in that weakness
Shinji's hardly alone in that weakness
It's more egregious on him because his power's so technical =3

That's not his ability. He can't affect ALL molecules. Just water and air to create ice.
There's nothing about it that would make some sense of him removing magical properties of a sword by encasing it in a layer of ice. It's poorly thought out crap is what I'm saying.
Rukia's ability could be snow to make her more unique than Hitsugaya.

And dethrone the literal special snowflake? I don't think so.
