Don't get me wrong, I've heard good songs from both genres and have a healthy amount of respect for those who use them effectively. However I simply can't handle hearing most of the beats these two genre's produce. Said beats are pretty much an instant headache wrapped neatly in a sound-wave, charging towards my poor abused cranium at lightning speed.
If I didn't have that problem, I'd probably be open to listening to some of them more often. As it stands however I avoid both like the plague.

Odds are with this past decade that you wouldn't honestly have to worry whatsoever about hearing the kinds of beats I'm thinking of to hear the meats and potatoes of the genre from any of it's eras. Including the past decade.

This "shit" as you put it isn't always the best way to come across in these situations. I could easily just be pushed further from stuff like this, thinking "oh, god damn. I've listened to 70 hip hop albums for every year between 1988 and 2009. And a big bunch from 1979-1987, and 50 for 2010.

You can call yourself an expert when large parts of your knowledge were painful to gain.

Let me put it this way, 1989 has only around 10 albums a casual fan needs to ever hear in rap. 10 more that a basic fan would want. 20 more a diehard would care about. The other 30…. that's where a man becomes a man. And also bored out of their fucking skull in being able to tell you that The Fat Boys released yet another shitty album after the past two shitty albums.

Look, I've admitted I was wrong and that I'd worded shit really badly. I'd much rather start over from scratch rather than argue this into oblivion. Show me what I'm missing rather than just ranting for the sake of it. What should I be listening for? What constitutes good hip-hop to you? Like most people against extreme metals, I honestly don't know how to listen to it. Please tell me.

The questions I asked near the top are a good place for me to get a feel for what things I need to address.

No idea what kind of jazz it was, but i had some Duke Ellington and Coltrane given to me by some buds who said if you don't like this you're never gonna like Jazz so yeah.

Other than that i've been taken to a local jazz club where they did their own thing, nice atmosphre, the music not as good nice.

And if swing counts as jazz then Benny Goodman as well.

Otherwise I can only offer the little sampler I made earlier. I don't want to force anything on you, but I find jazz to be one of the most beautiful and passionate genres out there (well, all genres have a lot of that, but it's most evident and raw in jazz) and think it would be a shame for you to give up after so little exposure.

To be perfectly honest, I don't care what genre the music is as long as it either gets me moving, keeps me relaxed, or just gets me grooving. But if I had to choose, I'd go with Folk/World music or Kids music (like that fucking Kidz bop shit).

"Guy Witta Gitaah" Folk is my favorite of the broad genres listed in the poll.

But famous pieces of it aren't a hard thing to find. Just listen to "The Times They Are A-Changin'" by Bob Dylan, Tim Hardin's "Tim Hardin 2", Donovan's "Sunshine Superman", or any other mainstream album affirmed to be a classic by Rolling Stone's circlejerk and you're getting some semblance of foundation and it will probably scratch the vague itch you have going.

P.S. I hate the classifier "world music" because it offensively dicks actual ethnic and traditional folk music into this catchall category for English speaking derpbags who think bongo drums and a rhythmically bobbing black smiling face are a fun exotic novelty.

Not to mention I don't really know what you're asking by requesting world music period. Like, world music is the section a United States library sticks every international artist into, not an actual genre. Maybe you could give a country, or region instead?

The anime club in the college scarred me for life. Instead of doing any other club activities, they would spend over two hours looking at random music videos that sound exactly the same every time with different props in each. I never endured that much torture since I was forced to listen to the same 4 songs repeat on BET for a whole day(I was at this girl's house doing my hair).

While that's behind me, I'll probably never dare to look into the genre myself. I figured I keep it reserved for BGMs in animated series.

It's understandable. While music featured in anime can be good, things like openings and endings are more often than not all about marketing bands and basically advertisements. It's all usually pop music and the pop rock by cookie cutter artists which, taken from context, can usually be pretty lame and cheesy, if not bad to begin with.

You get good bands and good musicians doing work too, but more often than not it's just pure marketing from big companies.

I agree, it's folk music as much as English and American folk.
I would have left it as just plain "folk" but then people wouldn't have known I meant folk music from anywhere and not just assholes on banjos and acoustic guitars.

The only J-POP band I like (which isn't even really J-POP, they sing in English too, not just random words in the middle of verses, and play Indie rock as well) made a song for some relatively unknown anime. The song is called Fast Forward, and sounds nothing like what they usually play. It sounds like generic bubbly J-POP shit and you wouldn't want to hear more from that band, but it's really their only bad song

There's music associated with anime that sounds like actual music you might hear without caring about anime (like me).

Yoko Kano, anything directed by Shinichiro Watanabe, stuff with general soundtrack style orchestration. And even occasionally the pop (We Gotta Power!!).

Then there's stuff that exists in it's disgusting own little world that would never fly in any other context. And the people Hiroy describes only like or care about it as music in the fact that its associated with their usually shallow interests to whatever it's attached to. They don't actually give a fuck about music and scoring. Like Nerdcore fans they only listen to stuff they feel safe with, because it's part of animu and not some big scary non animation associated thing.
Which is also why they develop random interest in stuff like Daft Punk or MF DOOM, even though they never touch anything else in the genres of those guys.

I do not enjoy country at all but I can't say HATE.
The only thing I will turn off immediately if I came upon it on youtube etc, is friggen RAWR metal.. death metal, or whatever it's called.

Lyrics basically go something like:

I do admit I went through a weird rock phase in like.. grade 10. My fav band was System of a Down if you can consider them "metal", but I can't be bothered with them now. I also adored punk, pure raw punk. I don't enjoy the trashy repetitive kind anymore.

A unique love of mine is classical. I was one of those band geeks in the flute section through highschool, I definitely enjoyed it. I'm the kind to want to attend symphonies, hell I actually watched the entire Lord of the Rings Orchestra DVD. Two or three times.

Here we go. This was in a cd I made when I was in grade 10. On it has "Punk" written in the same font style as The Casualties in the vid, and I drew purple flames around the perimeter of the cd xD heheh.

Pretty much. Ramones and Sex Pistols are like the fathers of punk, although they had different styles. Ramones had more fun, bouncy, love songs, Sex Pistols were more political.

The unfortunate thing is that these guys among other bands established the basically three to four chord punk rock style which is easily imitated and abused. This gave birth to the trashy hardcore punk which anyone with a guitar can write, hence the multitude of crap punk bands with their same 3-chord songs and indecipherable screaming. Oh yeah, add screamo to that bastard list.

I wouldn't really credit the Sex Pistols with much aside from popularizing it in Britain and sort of setting a lot of the cliches. John Lydon was much more influential on Post-Punk then on vanilla punk.

The CBCGs scene was the father of punk.
And the godfathers were people like MC5, The New York Dolls, and The Stooges.
