I'm pretty sure Oda's only involvement with Unlimited Cruise was the character design of Gabri. I thought it was funny how NB Europe toted Oda's involvement as if he had written the damn thing.

I'm still kind of flabbergasted by how the One Piece games keep selling well enough in Europe to warrant the translations. I was under the impression that it has even less of a network presence there than in North America (outside of reruns in certain countries like Germany etc).

Is the franchise somehow popular enough there to sustain merch like this, and if so how?

"One Piece" isn't that widespread in Europe from what I understand but it does well enough, and it's coming out in several Eastern European countries.

Of course it didn't help that Unlimited Adventure went out of print less than a year after it came out. It was nigh impossible to find at any store and getting it used on amazon costs allot, and if you ask about it at game stop its under their out of print list and the only copies you will find are used ones and even those are kind of rare.

My local Best Buy had a surplus of copies for Grand Adventure that they had marked down to $10. Unlimited Adventure's limited release was just a result of no major retailers even wanting to keep it in stock due to the poor sales of the previous games.

This is probably gonna get ignored as usual. But might as well voice my opinion.

Well lets face it guys. Unlimited Adventure came at a time when the anime boom had run its course and One Piece was coming off of the mis-management that was 4Kids. It had little fanfare (heck in fact I don't even remember any advertisements for it at all outside word of mouth) and people still had the 4Kids dub on their mind.

Now think back to when shows like Zatch Bell and Yu Yu Hakusho we're on TV during the height of Toonami's run. They got games imported or made due to the fact people we're familar with the series. Yes we got the Grand Battle and Pirate Carnival games. (Not the best games but hey better then nothing. We did get the awesome GBA game though) but that was 4Kids marketing at the time and, as much as I try not to bash them, their dub wasn't really gaining much of an audience. And still even then, OP was in a shift of networks and the audience that wasn't familiar with the show i.e: the majority, were either lost since the show was in the middle of arcs or didn't think much of the series.

Granted it was great to hear the new voice cast in UA and what (hopefully) will be the future performance of later characters. But these little tidbits barely helped anything. Only the fans of the series would get a kick of this and that was a very small group. Hardly enough to push the sales over the point where Bandai will consider bringing more OP games over.

It wasn't so much as bad sales but rather just bad timing. Had this came after the first few Funi DVDs, then yeah it probably would've had better reception. Still it was a miracle it came to the states at all.

Get nuts or go crazy trying.

Unlimited Adventure was a fun game though, I remember the first day it came out and I set off to find it. I first went to Best Buy, they didn't have it. I then journeyed to another Best Buy in my neighborhood. I then went to two Game Stop's and they said their shipment was late. I was on my way home when I spotted another Game Stop. So I walked in and on the shelve of new releases they had two UA's. So I then coughed up the 50$ and took it home and played it into the night.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who had trouble finding this game too. I'm sure another reason sales weren't good for this game was that it had characters U.S. fans would be unfamiliar with. Especially Franky.

I remember last year someone on Wikipedia said that UC would be coming across the seas to the U.S. and that Ep.1 would be here in July of '10 and Ep.2 would arrive in September of '10. Of course that was corrected within a month.

But ever since Cruise came out in Europe people in the states have said "Yeah, Bandai wrote me back saying it's coming". I heard that so much.

                                  ANYWAYS great podcast episode!

Let me give you guys my opinion on this One Piece: Unlimited Cruise subject.
At the time of the game's release, One Piece was doing extremely well in Germany, and people noticed that there were no other ways to get One Piece aside from the anime. UC was the deal breaker, because the series sold well in Europe (possibly 2nd from Japan), more money was indefinite and thus, UC was released.
The reason I believe that UA wasn't released in Europe was because NamcoBandai already were working on UC when UA shipped to the US, and possibly felt that since the Europeans don't get UA, they'll make more money be sending UC to Europe because Europe didn't experience the game mechanics of UA, because lets face it, they're both practically the same game in terms of design.
With the announcement of OP:Gigant battle this summer in Europe and a possible release of UCSP, it was proven that the Unlimited franchise was a way for the company to see if One Piece was popular enough to warrant more products in a specific country. In Japan that isn't a problem, since Japan practically eats it up. The US and Europe are different however, which is why this franchise was the perfect test.
So in conclusion, I would say import UC for all you US fans out there, but I think that the Wii freeloader doesn't work anymore. Or, even better, wait 'till Gigant Battle comes to Europe and import that, since DS games have no region lock.
