I received several pm's that I should post my Becoming the Pirate King: Clarified article here(as discussion material) so i've decided to do that even if it will most likely result in me getting trolled repeatedly. lol. If you have a problem with any of the Wiki quotes, I can provide examples from the manga to back it up.
I think we all know that Luffy will eventually become the Pirate King; If this doesn't happen Oda will have failed us miserably. However, I think a lot of One Piece fans are under a misconception regarding WHAT the Pirate King actually is, and WHY Luffy is the only possible character in all of One Piece who demonstrates all the prerequisites required to become the Pirate King. It's easy to ignore the how and why and settle on the fact that we know it will happen, but I think there are some important points to me made in the analysis of the why's and how's of becoming the pirate king. I will of course support most everything with evidence, but if you believe more is required I will attempt to provide it if possible. Last thing before I begin, remember that it's been 22 years since the world has had a living Pirate King. This is important.
So what is the underlying purpose of this post? What is it necessary to read?
There have been some that claim Luffy doesn't have to "be the strongest pirate alive" in order to be the PK and obtain the OP. I do not believe this to be true. Additionally, I think the assumption that Luffy must prove he is the "strongest pirate alive" would strongly impact how we predict the future of One Piece. Also, understanding this stuff can allow for future assumptions to be made that can help definitively prove some very cool stuff.
Key: PK = Pirate King, OP = One Piece(the treasure)
So, lets begin by asking an uncommon question.
How is the PK explicitly defined in One Piece?
Note I am not asking how someone would become the PK. I am asking what the PK actually is/ what is the essence of being the PK.
The PK has been defined in only 4 ways that I have found.
1. “Pirate King was the title of someone who had everything in this world” -Coby
! http://www.mangapanda.com/one-piece/2/14
“The pirate king the king of the sea” - Luffy
! http://www.mangapanda.com/one-piece/280/19
“The pirate king is the person with the most freedom on the sea” - Luffy
! http://www.mangapanda.com/one-piece/507/9
4. “The pirate king is the strongest pirate alive” - Wiki
note this is stated as fact everywhere on the internet(including the Wiki) yet I could not fine this in the actual manga. If you can find a link, send it.
However, if it was not explicitly stated that's okay too. I believe I can prove it must be true in other ways.
Note that each of these points are formatted in the same style. "The PK is…". This is not giving us any information on what you must do to become the PK, this is defining what "the PK is..". The distinction is important. Also note that Oda has on several occasions actually given us the definition(or how people perceive the definition) of what the PK is.
According to this info we can learn a lot about about what makes the PK, the PK and not -for instance- a Yonkou. "The PK is the king of the sea", almost directly implies that the PK(like a regular King/Monarch), in simple terms, is the supreme power and/or governing entity of the sea. This suggests that the PK-practically speaking- is the most powerful person on the sea and determines the rules(or lack of rules) one must follow when entering his domain. This is similarly echoed when Luffy defined the PK as the person with "the most freedom at sea". This also suggests that others can't force the PK to do anything, and that the PK(at least more so than any other person at sea) has the freedom to do whatever he wants. Both of these prove #4 to be correct logically, even if it wasn't stated in the manga. Only the "strongest pirate alive" would be able to force others to follow his will AND prevent others from imposing their will on him thus limiting his freedom and questioning his role as the supreme power of the sea(A.K.A the king of the sea).
#1 however, has a slightly different ring to it. It suggests that to be the PK an individual would have "obtained everything the world has to offer". This actually refers specifically to the OP, and suggests one would have to obtain the OP to become the PK. Not that Luffy's definition of the PK and Coby's are quite different. I actually think Coby has echoed the common misinterpretation, that a lot of pirates(and real fans) are under. Luffy meanwhile understands the essence of what makes the PK, the PK and for reasons that I will get into later emphasize why this makes him the best candidate to become the future PK.
Keep in mind that I do think Luffy will find the OP and become the PK, but I don't think finding the OP itself defines the PK. Note that there is no definition of the PK regarding conquering the Grand Line, let's get into why that is the case.
How does One Piece explain how Gold Roger earned the title of Pirate King? What exactly did he do to earn that moniker?
Three things have been specifically mentioned.
1. “Wealth. Fame. Power. The man who had achieved everything in life, like none before him, was the Pirate King, Gold Roger” - This translation is the most generally accepted from my research.
Roger never ran from danger, He faced it head on always. This is what made him the Pirate King - Garp
! http://www.mangapanda.com/one-piece/588/14
3. And as many are aware, Roger conquered the Grand Line; Which was previously considered to be "impossible" by the general population.
Notice here, that we are explaining what Roger DID, in order to earn the distinction of PK. If Luffy were to become the PK, what you would see here is a list of Luffy's major accomplishments, including(but not limited to) being the first person in history to attempt(and succeed) at breaking into Impel down and being the the first person in history to cause a mass breakout from the prison. Both of these were also considered "impossible" feats. Notice how Roger never accomplished this. If we are correct that Luffy will eventually become the PK, following previously establish logic that one would have to repeat the feats of previous PK's in order to become the new PK, then that would force each successive generation of PK's to accomplish an increasing number of difficult tasks. Thus the next PK after Luffy would ALSO have to break in and break out of impel down to earn the title of PK. Doesn't it seem rediculous to have generations of Pirates attempting this - most likely - irrelevant task? Luffy did this because circumstances determined that's what he would need to do in order to achieve what he wanted(which was save Ace, his brother). This clearly explains the premise of my post.
What made conquering the Grand Line so important for Roger wasn't necessarily the physical act of reaching Raftel, It's that conquering the Grand Line was previously thought to be "impossible" by the general population. This is confirmation of why the PK isn't defined as the person who conquered the Grand Line, but rather defined as the most powerful pirate on the sea, who can not be told what to do. This doesn't mean that the future PK won't conquer the Grand Line, though. It just signifies it isn't necessary to become the PK. Being the strongest pirate on the sea, however, is necessary.
Let's look at what Roger did, in order to be called the PK and what they all have in common. #1 says that Roger obtained pretty much everything important you could obtain, "unlike anyone before him". #2 emphasizes that Roger was not afraid of anything, and wouldn't let anyone prevent him from doing as he wished, even if it meant putting his life on the line. It also suggests that Roger was most probably in -almost- constant danger(much like Luffy) and most likely accomplished a huge number of amazing feats along his way to becoming the PK. The commonality between all these reasons is that Roger, in a number of situations, made the "impossible", possible. The key point i'm trying to make is that the PK is not akin to turning super saiyan in DBZ, it's not an ability but rather a TITLE or moniker. You can not bestow this title on yourself, and force it to be true(See: Luffy). The people of the world are the ones who can give, or take away the title. This is why the public perception of your greatness is vital to becoming the PK. To be the PK, the vast majority must believe you to be the strongest and greatest pirate alive.
So in simplest terms, how did Roger become the PK, and what would future PK's have to do?
1. He accomplished a staggering number of impressive, and even "impossible" feats. And did this because of his reckless, fearlessness.
2. This increased his overal Legacy, which is mostly determined by what other's think of you.
3. He was never defeated, and could be considered the strongest pirate of the time because of it.
You should notice quite a strong correlation to Luffy.
This is the take home message:
The new PK does not absolutely(necessarily) have to accomplish the feats of previous PK's. The defining attribute that determines whether someone can become the PK- isn't what he does- It's whether or not he has the power and gall to impress the world in such a manner that he earns the unquestionable distinction of being the strongest and greatest pirate alive in the minds of the people of the world.
All this info has significance because it supports the idea that Luffy HAS TO be the strongest pirate(or at the very least undefeatable), to be considered - unquestionably- the PK by everyone. Ultimately, this is why I don't think Shanks will survive seeing Luffy become the PK. In order to become the PK, Luffy would have to defeat Shanks. This would be problematic because Luffy's defining attribute related to his strength is hisunlimited Will, and not his actual ability. His will also changes in relation to his desire to succeed. I don't think Luffy's desire to beat Shanks would be on the same lvl as his desire to defeat Blackbeard(potentially after BB has killed shanks). Yet, I also believe Luffy would require that kind of will to defeat shanks in a serious fight. Therefore, Luffy would lose… and fail to become the PK. Shanks has got to go, imo.
Why this means the OP is ALSO not necessarily req to become the PK.
This is similar to the misconception that a pirate must conquer the grand line in order to become the PK. I don’t believe someone absolutely has to find the OP to become the PK(although Luffy will undoubtably do this before he is crowned the pirate king). This is true for the very same reasons as i’ve mentioned earlier.
“But JoyBoy, it’s stated repeatedly in the manga that you must find the OP to be the PK, so your rediculously long post is trash” - Random forum member
In my opinion I do not believe that’s what they meant when they said that. Even if they did imply that obtaining the OP would result in becoming the PK it’s probably under the assumption that he who finds the OP WOULD be the strongest person on the sea and have deemed themselves worthy of both the OP and continuing Rogers legacy as the new PK.
First I will explain the misconception regarding the common phrase, “I am going to become the PK and find the OP”. Luffy in particular says this A LOT, but I think he understands that finding the OP and becoming the PK are not the same.
Here are the reasons:
1. If you read closely into Gold Rogers execution speech, he does not say that the person who finds the OP will become the PK. In fact, he doesn’t say PK at all. He just tells the world that if they “want to find his treasure, it is found in that place”.
He says nothing about earning the title of PK. Roger wasn’t trying to set the rules one must follow to become his successor as PK. imo, his goal was to inspire a new generation of pirates so that another may discover the truths of the world as he and his crew did. The reason that finding the OP and becoming the PK are commonly misinterpreted as the same thing is because characters who desire one almost definitely desire the other. “Dreamers”- or OP seekers- almost always have a very deep respect for Roger and dream of following in his footsteps. The reason for this can vary, but the result is always the same; They must become the PK. Some desire the wealth that they imagine the OP would bring, and these people usually desire the fame associated with being recognized as the PK. Others- like luffy- are interested in the OP, not for the wealth it is supposed to contain, but rather the adventure and mystery associated with the search for it. And for Luffy, becoming the PK has more to do with his desire for absolute freedom and nothing to do with the fame being the PK would give him. It’s this last example that you can really see how the two objectives are different. Luffy desires the OP and being the PK for different reasons. When he says he’s going to become the PK AND find the OP, you could interpret that he is saying, “I dream to undergo the worlds most AMAZING adventure, AND want the freedom to do as I want.” The “and” is important. I don’t believe Luffy believes finding the OP will make him the PK, and given this clarification there would then be little proof that someone is required to find the OP to become the PK.
For example, if a random person were to stumble on the OP(if it was just treasure as many seem to think), that would not make them the PK imo. This is emphasized by Luffy when he said, “learning about it(the OP) from someone else would defeat the purpose of their adventures and that becoming the Pirate King would have little merit if he already knew about the One Piece.”- wiki
! http://www.mangapanda.com/one-piece/507/8
This is the most definitive proof of what i’m trying to convey. The “Journey” for the OP is just as important - if not more important - than the OP itself.
Why finding the OP and becoming the PK are also the same thing:
I want to clarify at this point that I DO think Luffy will find the OP and conquer the sea, and that this might cement his legacy and allow him to be considered the PK by the world. I can already imagine forum member who got tired of reading raging in the comment section that i’m an idiot to think Luffy won’t find the OP etc. LOLZ. That’s not what i’m saying. Even though I believe conquering the sea and finding the OP are not NECESSARY to be called the King of the pirates, accomplishing these tasks would both contribute to building the legacy required to be the PK.
Oda has made that an easy assumption because both of the tasks are extremely difficult, and considered extremely difficult verging on impossible by many(Bellamy smh). The search for the OP, in particular, has been attempted by an uncountable number of poor souls and many of them are now dead because of it. Thus, the person who accomplishes one or both would be considered doer’s of the “impossible”, and earn a tremendous amount of respect from the people of One Piece.
However, Oda wouldn’t just just let someone randomly find the OP. This is why raftel(or some other island that is “impossible” to find/ stumble upon is the perfect place to hide the OP. It’s even possible that the OP may not be something that can just be picked up in one place but, rather, must be found in bits all throughout the world in order to ensure that only those who are looking for it will find it. This would suggest, again, finding the OP is meaningless without the journey itself, and I believe the journey itself is what Roger was trying to inspire.
The OP can only be “found by those who are worthy enough to reach it.”-wiki
I'll leave this here. This could potentially be the start of a series of theories that's final goal is to almost definitely prove that we already know the answers to some of these questions(with evidence):
1. What Roger's will is.
2. What the Will of D. is
3. What the OP is
4. Why Luffy is, specifically, the only person who has what it takes to to be the PK and begin the "new age"
Among other interesting things.
I'll judge the response I get to this to see if it's worth my time.
