They finally got of Supes red pants at last.
Bet that's going to anger comic-book nerds who don't like change.

@No:
Dunno if it's the artwork, but Wonder Woman with short hair would look terrible.
Oh so she will get that horrendous reboot like they said they planned to , just with everyone else so it gets drowned out.
I don't think she has short hair, I think it's just the angle.
@No:
So …..every DC comic book you have lying around has now officialy become a pile of worthless paper.
You do realize they're ALL imaginary stories, right? That what you get out of the story is the same as what you always got out of it. (And they have like 8 million continuities anyway.)
This is no different than when Crisis on infinite Earths, rebooted everything 25 years ago. Of course, they screwed up their linewide reboots with Zero Hour, Infinite Crisis, and Final Crisis, so I don't know whats going to be different about Flash point… but hey, its all fresh starting.
Its basically Marvel's Ultimate line, only applied to the main DC line. With comic sales dropping every month and even old time fans finding it impossible to keep up with everything and the DECADES of continuity... with hundreds of writers, artists, and thousands of titles? They gotta try something, and this is probably the way to go about it.
This is slightly different from when Spiderman, and just Spiderman, rebooted in the middle of the Marvel U. After making a deal with the devil and aborting his baby and divorcing his wife...
They finally got of Supes red pants at last.
Bet that's going to anger comic-book nerds who don't like change.
The old look has too many decades of iconography behind it. It'll go back eventually. You can change batman and Wonder Woman, but changes to Supes never last. Even Aquaman went back to his terrible Goldfish look.
People may mock the red underwear, but we're used to seeing color there.
@No:
Including Detecive Comics ? I mean, they're close to 900, it would just be a total waste.
Uhm. Comics are in bad shape. If they don't do SOMETHING to fix the market, they might not make it to 900.
Besides, They'll go back to the old numbering when they approach 1000.
Oh and the description just seems like a total bs way to say "We're retroactively changing characters and making sure stories you read just recently with your favourite characters never happen, while we try and make them hip teenagers and racialy varied to apeal to the young hip crowd".
Just the usual reboot they have every decade to clean things up. Though this seems like the first complete clean slate since the Silver age 60 years ago.
So Superman: Secret Origins gets kicked out of Supes mainstream continuity?
Batman Year one as well?
That's what I'm wondering.
Alternate universes. They still happened. As Alan Moore once said, "This one is just an imaginary story. But then, aren't they all?"
I saw this coming at the end of Flashpoint which seemed like it was going to have a huge effect on the universe. But luckily this new universe is taking most of it's background from that mini series so as long as everyone who likes DC reads it they'll be fine.
ahahaha cyborg
i think he needs a couple more thingies to glue to his tech
I'm actually looking forward to the clean slate. I love the DC stuff… but even I can't follow it and don't get any of their books.
A fresh start means I might actually be able to read Superman again.
All the old ideas are going to get regurgitated anyway.
Think of it as... when the Superman cartoon started. It was a fresh new origin, introduced all the characters to audiences for the first time, redesigned and updated the lamer characters, and it was all good to go... but it didn't suddenly invalidate the Fleisher cartoons or the movies or the comics of the time, right?

Could be, but ever since OMD I have this soothing hatred when companies simply make that none of the stories you read and or enjoyed in the past couple of years have ever happened.
It seems to make all that pointless and wasted.
Love the whole idea. :)

Wasted? You enjoyed the storylines, right? It's not like a game where you're losing all your progress. It's storytelling and they're just starting a new set of stories. There's nothing stopping you from still enjoying the old stuff or enjoying the new stuff.
And I liked Dick as Batman…....

Like I said, OMD was different because they "ended" the old arc the worst way possible, they did in in the middle of the old universe with JUST Spidey, and they were in fact, actively crapping on everything that came before. It wasn't a fresh start, it was a murder the old and wedge this in there start.
But they've retconned it and explained it away since so that everything actually did happen. Mephisto actually had nothing to do with it and Mary Jane is aware of the last 20 years of continuity.
Anyway, as long as you enjoyed the stories along the way, thats what matters, right? Its not like you or pretty much anyone alive has been reading every Marvel story ever nonstop since the 60's. You started in the middle, and you stopped reading in the middle after realizing status quo is king. But the adventures along the way are what mattered.

Weren't they technicially doing something along those lines with the Earth One titles?

I think more superhero comics in general .
Just the usual reboot they have every decade to clean things up. Though this seems like the first complete clean slate since the Silver age 60 years ago.
I have to admit I'm somewhat excited; mostly because I hope they bring in new teams and they can fix supes who's been written horribly)see the Grounded storyline.
Alternate universes. They still happened. As Alan Moore once said, "This one is just an imaginary story. But then, aren't they all?"
I'm very curious to see the new continuity orgins of these characters. I mean Superman: Secret Origins was very mediocre, and Batman seriously needs his definitive origin retold.
Alright I can deal with this, and seeing as western superhero comics are overloaded with continuity problems from a result of too many writers writing the same character. But that's more of a advantage since unlike most comics that are creator owned; the quality can vary from bad to great.
Kinda want to see this with manga, specifically Naruto. But I know that's never happening since Japanese comics are more respectul of the creators and don't ofetn commison new writers to take over a story. But I think its somewhat rising seeing as as recently a dragonball comic used to promote that tv special; and that new Rock Lee comic was/are being written by somebody other than the creators(though they are mostly humorous).
So maybe.
The old look has too many decades of iconography behind it. It'll go back eventually. You can change batman and Wonder Woman, but changes to Supes never last. Even Aquaman went back to his terrible Goldfish look.
Hmm, well I kinda want them to use this design.
Forgive me, if you think its terrible but I think its great, and feels more modern.
They should use this design for the movie reboot coming out.
It adds a modern twist to the costume, while keeping the iconography.
Its perfect.

I think more superhero comics in general .
In the American market, superhero comics make up like 98% of all comics, in terms of sheer number of titles, and in quantity sold.
And even then the highest selling books are topping out at 100,000, far far less than it was a few years ago. And then a couple titles down its a mere 50,000, and it only gets far worse from there. The average indy title is lucky to sell 1,500-3,000 copies, which barely pays for its print run, let alone the creators. Add in rising printing costs and paper, and lower circulation…
American comics are dying. The system and the audience and the price point are just... bad.
Trust someone working in the industry, it is BAD right now, very close to dying.
Really, DC rebooting everything is incredibly minor compared to the BIG news... that they're initiating same day digital release on all their titles. That's the MUCH bigger story, but most people aren't noticing that part of it. Jump to digital will change it around some, and it was inevitable, no telling how thats going to go. It is going to SCREW the retailers though.
Maybe if there were more Grant Morrisons writing comics and less Jeph Loebs, the comic industry wouldn't be in such bad shape.

You can say that again.
Sea once predicted manga will take over the market forcing them to change, I know there are some great American comics out there but the dark reality is superhero's have too much of a prescence in the market. I just want to see a little more diversity in it. Like the manga market, manga has more diversity, that dosen't make it neccessarily better but in terms of variety it is superior.
I blame the movies.
and Fredric Wertham.
Remember what you said about comics being more diverse before that comics code killed it?

less Jeph Loebs
The one that murdered the Ultimate universe Jeph Loeb?
Among other crimes.
Jeph Loeb ruins everything he touches. He even managed to mess up LOST.
He's one of the few creators I actively and consistently dislike the work of.
I gonna say this, I know its heresy but I didn't care for Batman Long Halloween.
There I said It.
I also didn't care for Superman for All seasons either.

More info
Included in the 52 series will be:
A new title starring Superman written by Grant Morrison.
Birds of Prey #1 - This new ongoing series will not feature the work of longtime "BoP" writer Gail Simone. In fact, many tried and true approaches to books will be getting a second look at DC in September.
Teen Titans #1 - The new start for the teen team will be written by "Red Robin" scribe Fabian Nicieza.
Justice Society of America #1 - Only one of a number of current titles that will welcome a creative team shift, the future of the original superhero team will apparently not involve current writer Marc Guggenheim.
Wonder Woman #1 - Don't expect the recent changes from writer J. Michael Straczynski to stick when the Amazing Amazon sees another new #1 hit.
Green Lantern #1 - Even with a new #1, Green Lantern remains in Johns' hands, and readers can expect the effects of major crossovers like "Blackest Night" to stay in place moving forward.
Hawkman #1 - While fans have known a "Hawkman" series by James Robinson has been in the works since the writer mentioned it on a panel at New York Comic Con, Bleeding Cool's Rich Johnston has been reporting the rumor that the book will be drawn by "Batman & Robin" and "Outsiders" artist Philip Tan.
Aquaman #1 - No surprises here. The already announced series featuring the sea king by Johns and Ivan Reis will be part of the relaunch wave.

Well at least Supes will recover from that disaster which was 'Grounded'.
I loved All Star Superman I'm eager to see what Grant Morrison will do with the new Superman title
Having to read multiple comics just to understand the story was a real turn off for me. This is why I'm very much looking forward to the reboots. Honestly, reading a story that was from 20+ years ago, just to understand the plot of a current comic, it's just not something I like to do very often.
I kind of like the idea of a reboot as someone who is interested in comics but does not read them due to the like 70 years of history I don't feel like going through and reading just to find out if I like it or not.
I guess I'll keep an eye on this to see how it pans out.
I hate the idea of a reboot for an entire company's work, but I am looking at this with optimism, despite the problems I have with it.
There are titles I have been looking at, but don't want to jump in the middle of, and titles that I have desired to get put out that have a new chance now. If Birds of Prey keeps Hawk and Dove, I'll jump on the new number one. Aquaman getting a new run has me interested. I don't see anything written, but I am all over a new Shazam title if they go for it.
On the other hand, there are titles with things I was looking forward to in the future that I wouldn't want rebooted. I love the dynamic of Batman having each [former] Robin and how each one is still involved in Bruce's life in very different ways. Starting from scratch, will we have to see a new way for Bruce to adopt Dick and then Jason and then Tim and then Damien? Is the background of Superman going to stick? Will Pa Kent still be dead? Will Clark and Lois still be married? I don't know, and that's just a couple questions.
And I thought OMD was respectful of the past stories. It really only resealed Peter's identity and ended his relationship with MJ. All the past stories kepts their impact.
I'm hoping if they redo modern Superman origin they will at least free it from the influence of the Richard Donner Movies and fucking Smallvile. Its obvious many writers of Superman are fans of the Donner films but christ leave it out of the comics, or at least use elements of it sparingly. The Donner films are great(though overrated) but they shouldn't influence the canon of the comics, also anything Smallvile shouldn't even touch the source material.
Here's to the reboot.

I feel yah. Sometimes it's even worse when the stories tend to cross over with other stories from other series. That and continuations that are made by different authors are off-putting, especially when the styles don't match.
also anything Smallvile shouldn't even touch the source material.
I love you Bill.

Brace yourselves….[qimg]http://i.newsarama.com/images/newdcu_revamp_02.jpg[/qimg]
Forgive me for being juvenile, but I can't help but notice the position of the gun that Green Lantern creates…well, it seems that at least someone's happy with the reboot.
I suppose what Robby said makes sense, but for some reason I think the reason behind the reboot is not epic enough. Sure, Flashpoint is an event, but with only 5 issues (and various tie-ins that's pretty much just world building) it pales in comparison to the epicness of Crisis on Infinite Earth. I mean, Blackest Night seem bigger and more far-reaching than this. Really, what I want is years of buildup to the very grandest of enemy, so that when they're all rebooted it seems that their story is over in a way - sure, it seems that all storyline will be over in time of the change, but some things like Dick Grayson being Batman still has potential yet unexplored.
Also, I really hope that this doesn't mean that the more minor characters we have now will just be gone without knowing anything. For instance, I don't mind that much that Barbara Gordon is Batgirl again, but does it mean that Cassandra Cain (Batgirl II) is pretty much gone now? Well, I think I read somewhere that some things will still be the same from the current continuity, so I'll just withheld my freakout and see how things go first. Just wish this happen a few years back when I first get into DC though...
@Syan:
And I thought OMD was respectful of the past stories. It really only resealed Peter's identity and ended his relationship with MJ. All the past stories kepts their impact.
It also took away his organic webshooters, brought Harry back to life, moved him back in with Aunt May, erased the entire world's knowledge of his identity (including all memory, video, websites, newspapers and scrapbooks and whatever the hell else) was tied to a deal with the devil, and pretended that, well, 20 years of marriage… weren't. Its not like they broke up at that point, they retroactivley broke up 20 years ago, which changes a LOT of little things. It even took away AUNT MAY'S memory of his real identity, including all the growth she'd had since learning it.
So, Peter is buried underground in Kraven's Last Hunt. He's digging to the surface and thinking "I have to live for my WIFE!" not quite the same impact with "I have to live for my GIRL I HAVE HELD HANDS WITH". And hey, what about all those years Black Cat was after him but backed off because Peter was married? And all the dating and character growth she went through as a result? And it changes the pregnancy, and... gah. It was the least respectful reboot EVER.
You CAN'T just say "Oh, they never got married but everything else was EXACTLY the same except for the wedding certificate. Oh, and the fact that they broke up afterwards. And the fact that Harry is alive. And... none of JMS's 8 year run happened."
They've retconned the reboot since then. But it was really, really badly done.
I don't mind that much that Barbara Gordon is Batgirl again,
That's awful.
'Oracle' is like best thing that could ever happen to Barbara. She was bland as Batgirl; she's actually a much better character with the Oracle persona. Getting shot by the Joker turns her into a badass.
Oracle is a crippled but intelligent kick ass computer wizard, that even gives even revered intellects like Batman a run for their money. She kicks ass with her brain, more than her brawn.
That's awesome on so many fucking levels.
The Killing Joke is greatest Batman and Joker confrontation…ever in comics and to for it to be ignored in this new continiuty is just....
Really it lessens the severity of Joker's impact on Batman with this IMO.
@Saturn:

Yeah. COIE worked so well because it soooo epic in scale. It provided final stories for all the original character, worlds and realities were destroyed, the ultimate enemies beaten down, huge sacrifices, and the scale was sooo unprecedented.
The big problem is, even though they clean slated after that, they half assed the slate cleaning without any really big plan at the time. Mostly it was Superman that restarted from scratch… and the erasing of the confusing multiple worlds concept. But other things like Teen Titans or Batman just sort of kept going with minor changes but like nothing had really happened.
They haven't done an actual clean slate since the Silver Age.
Also, you can't do that scale of reality breaking event twice. It just has less impact the second time. To make it even worse they dragged it on for like 4 years across ALL titles with Infinite Crisis and Final Crisis...
this is verrrrrryyyy rageworthy, if I still read comics frequently I would be livid.
this is verrrrrryyyy rageworthy, if I still read comics frequently I would be livid.
You realize its that attitude thats entirely responsible for the reboot? You don't read comics anymore, and they're trying to get you back with a fresh start.
You HAVEN'T been reading them, so why does it matter to you at all?
I like the idea of Barbara being Batgirl again (mostly because her being Oracle never really interested me) and I love seeing Nightwing back. I mean I really enjoyed Dick being Batman (it's a nice change from Bruce's constant grim-ness) but I'd rather see him do his own thing. But it does make me wonder what's going to happen to Damian, since Dick and Damian's relationship was my favorite part of Dick!Batman.
@Saturn:
Forgive me for being juvenile, but I can't help but notice the position of the gun that Green Lantern creates…well, it seems that at least someone's happy with the reboot.
Lmao I noticed that too. Oh Hal, you boobie.

THIS.

Yeah, this is the kinda person for whom I was enraged before.
Because it screws over all the current fans and makes everything they read or that they could buy in the coming weeks completely null and void.
I actually like this idea. The only comic book I read is the Ultimate Spider-Man comics, because it's easy to pick up and follow and isn't about 9000 issues long. I'll be really interested in following some of the rebooted DC heroes. Especially Superman.
Hmm, well I kinda want them to use this design.

Hmm… I like most of the design. Though, I don't know how I feel about how they changed the symbol. Changing parts of the costume like they did is okay, but the symbol is iconic. So I don't think they should change it.

The symbol is changed anyways. Look at it.
Even if the rest of the costume is changed, the symbol is going to slowly mutate back to its classic look.
Seriously. Changes in Superman's outfit never stick. Not even getting rid of the underwear.

That's most likley because people have so much history with it, and because of comic fans hate change.
Funny enough, Geoff Johns poked fun at Supes costume in Secret Origin which I found funny.
Despite the creepy Christopher Reeve nostalgia and ripping off of the feel of Donner films, Secret Origin had some damn good art.

This and other one posted are the top canidates for the reboot redesign of Supes suit in my eyes.

It pisses me off when writers have the characters insult costumes they've worn for years just so they can give a nod and a wink to the fans. Grant Morrison has Wolverine insult his yellow spandex when the X-Men moved to leather outfits to match the movie for a while. Or when Brad Meltzer in Identity Crisis had the Calculator and Captain Boomerang insult their old costumes. Or when She Hulk during Civil War that "Tony, you're acting like Doctor Doom!" nudge nudge wink wink reader isn't that exactly what your opinion is?
That's not witty or cute or clever, its part of the universe you're playing in, and either you embrace the absurdity and heritage of it, or you're just being cynical and mean spirited towards the readers, and out of character for the characters.
Superman has always worn the costume without shame. Why is it hip to have him do so now? It ESPECIALLY bad since, they'll almost inevitably go back to the old duds anyway, unless their older costume was an especially garish byproduct of the times and the new one looks loads better.

Eh, its just a little nod. I found it funny, from my perspective I see it as making the character more relatable or believable for the modern audience. I mean imagine yourself having to put on that costume, would you really be prideful of it? Or will you feel humilated?
Though I understand your gripes, personally I perfer the Donner/birthright? one in which wore the symbol costume as he was prideful of his heritage.
I mean imagine yourself having to put on that costume, would you really be prideful of it? Or will you feel humilated?
If he didn't like the design he should have switched it up before it was made.
And he's f'in Superman. He's a god. The tights work for him. Honestly, its amazing that more superheroes didn't go to that look in TRIBUTE to the greatest among them. Its still skintight spandex all around no matter how you color it.
May as well ditch the cape too while you're at it. Him and Batman are the only ones left that wear capes after Watchmen disected the absurdity of them. No one else can pull the look off anymore without the history behind it.
As much as I hate stating the obvious, one of the press releases (copy/pasted in post 25) clearly lists that certain events, like Blackest Night, will remain in-continuity. So really, it's not so much a reboot, more over DC handpicking the parts they like and throwing away what they don't.
I'm honestly sad to hear about Barbara Gordon returning as Batgirl. I came into the new series at #15 but it was honestly fun, enjoyable and worth the price of admission, much more so than Slott's issues of MARVEL TEAM…. I mean "The Amazing Spider-Man". I just hope they don't mess around with things too much, I don't really want to see Ted Kord or Vic Sage return since, although I love the characters, their replacements have been doing a spectacular job at upholding their legacies.
I'm honestly sad to hear about Barbara Gordon returning as Batgirl.
Yeah, now she won't be interesting anymore.

Greatest? More like the first.
Um, I hate to be the one to state the obvious but you do realize they have stated certain tales will remain in-community, such as Blackest Night? So really, it's not a reboot so much as handpicking the parts they like and throwing away what they don't.

Have you tried getting into Marvel's Ultimate line? Not only is it made exactly for that purpose, Ultimate Spider-Man is one of the best superhero comics of the past decade.
Can I ask this question?
Does anyone care about Wonder Woman?
I mean I much Raven over her, I mean does anyone here actually read her comics?
I don't think she's all that popular.
Yeah, now she won't be interesting anymore.
I think Barbara could be interesting as Batgirl if she was written well but not only am I enjoying the current Batgirl series more than almost everything else DC puts out but Gail Simone made Oracle a central part of the DC Universe. She worked so much better in that role than she ever did as Batgirl so why they are stepping back when everyone liked that development is anybody's guess.
Yeah, now she won't be interesting anymore.

I went back and updated my post to say where it had been posted in this very thread but I'll copy/paste.

Oh well, I guess I can we'll see.

- Green Lantern #1 - Even with a new #1, Green Lantern remains in Johns' hands, and readers can expect the effects of major crossovers like "Blackest Night" to stay in place moving forward.
Fine but as long they get rid of that awful Superman Grounded, and boot it out continuity I'll be cool.
I think Cassandra Cain is characterized well, and I much perfer her as Batgirl over Barbara…..
Oh well, I guess I can we'll see.--- Update From New Post Merge ---

Yeah, I have to admit I'm biased because I don't read that much of Barbara. I do like the concept of Oracle, but sadly for most of the world all they know is that Barbara = Batgirl and Dick Grayson = Robin, they probably don't know who Oracle is or that there are multiple Robins. So if they do a reboot, it's pretty much unavoidable and I resigned to accept that. What bothers me more is that the Batgirl after her has indeed been really exciting, Cass is one of my favorite superhero and Stephanie Brown under Miller is one of the most fun and enjoyable books right now, so I'm more worried about their fate.
Oh, and I think they should be smart with this too. Things that are popular like Blackest Night will get a nod in the new books, but the universally hated ones like Grounded, Amazons Attack, Countdown or Cry For Justice will be phased out.
don't know much about comics but I heard the shustar and seigels heirs got the rights to the classic superman costume so they had to change it, this could be just a rumor though.
Look on the upside with Batgirl. Joker can always shoot her again in issue 3 and we can get that 20 year arc condensed into 6 months.
Of course, they were pulling away from the crippled angle ANYWAY beforehand. Status quo is king…
The biggest problem with comic books is trying to balance the massive continuity of the past with trying to bring in new readers. I get why DC is doing this but somehow the approach has to be right in both directions: appease the regular comic readers while at the same time bringing in new ones. You can't just throw everything away, but at the same time you can't bog people down with too much continuity.
The only real advantage is DC finally going digital: by getting comic books out of comic shops and into a more mainstream vehicle that everyone has access to (like how they used to be on newstands), it will allow potentially for more people to read them.

What do you mean "finally"?
They've had it like that for a while now.
