Regardless of whether it makes sense or not it's still fanservice for her to have skimpy leather clothes and moaning all the time.
What do you think of the way women are portrayed in OP?
-
-
Clearly? Nami said Califa was sexy and that she'd want her as a secretary. She also behaved strangely with Vivi in the baths. Nami has shown no interest in men herself unless it was to dupe them into giving her treasure or whatever. You really have to wonder if Nami is attracted to women or not.
Besides, some people get turned on by rape, especially in Japan. It doesn't take away from the fanservice if it there is consent or not.Anything Sadi-chan did to anybody in ID wasn't consensual either, yet she's a character that's clearly, clearly fanservice.
Interesting conjecture. I think it'd be kind of cool if Nami was canon attracted to females. As to Nami/Kalifa, you're right, I guess it would be considered fanservice to most, but when I was reading it I'd honestly gotten the impression that it was mainly making fun of Kalifa's hypocrisy re sekuhara. Also, consider the end result of her power, which reduces people to completely unsexy soap dolls without secondary sexual characteristics. Maybe Oda was trying to subvert this a bit?
Re Sadi-chan, you're right, the things she does aren't consensual, and she is clear fanservice, so I guess my argument is kind of stupid. I just like her anyway.
Question: Is there anything short of a guy mounting another guy with teh sexface you would consider fanservice for girls? What would a guy character who's clear fanservice be like/act like in your opinion?
-
I guess a pretty gay man is fanservice for yaoi fangirls.
As far as a straight male characters by themselves, I can't really think of any characteristics girl fans are attracted to in terms of characters that guy fans don't consider cool as well. -
How about for non-yaoi fangirls? Would you say a pretty/handsome/otherwise attractive man who's straight/bi isn't as fanservicey?
-
Like I said, I can't really think of any characteristics a male character might have that fangirls would latch onto that male fans wouldn't find cool too.
I mean, if you go to Fanfiction.net you'll see tons of mary sues for Zoro because of his cool, silent persona, yet there are a lot of male fans that like him for the same reasons those fangirls do, though not in the same way. Nobody except Local has the guts to say Zoro is a fanservice character, though.
(Although I admit that the anime extending his training scenes is probably fanservice, but once again this goes back to the anime =/= manga)
The only male character in OP that seems like fanservice due to the way he dresses is probably X Drake and I still don't think Oda did that on purpose.
-
So fanservice exclusively for females is just inherently more difficult than fanservice exclusively for males, which is much easier. Interesting.
-
The manga itself is read mostly by males, so it's a no brainer for Oda to put in some sketch-skimpy clothing and bust sizes for the female characters. Keeps the readers thinking about the manga, which leads to more sales. Plus Oda is a pervert, so I'm sure that contributes to why he draws them that way. I like it.
-
To do it for males all you need is skimpy clothing and bouncy boobs. It doesn't quite work the same way with girls.
The reason being is that girls are attracted to a bigger variety of guys, while men are usually attracted to the same body type in women. For example: One of my sister's friends is attracted to very lanky guys. I prefer big, tall men with some muscle. A girl I once met says that she doesn't like big men cause they scare her, she prefers a man that is shorter than her and not physically strong.
Meanwhile the vast majority of men are attracted to large breasts, small waists and big hips. If you get a large group of men and put them in a room full of women with their faces covered they'll all agree which ones had hotter bodies. If you do the same with women they're more likely to disagree which body type they like best.
I remember reading it online somewhere but I need to pull up that source… -
That is true, by and large.
-
Okay, found the source study:
http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2009-06/wfu-ra062609.php -
Some say that men tend to focus on physical attractiveness of women, whereas women tend to take in multiple factors into consideration.
-
Some say that men tend to focus on physical attractiveness of women, whereas women tend to take in multiple factors into consideration.
That's true, along with how we're attracted to a bigger variety of men.
Hence why girls like RedPassion exist.
(though she's probably just nuts) -
I think for the most part women are portrayed pretty much as they are in real life. Some weak, some strong, some slutty and some strong willed. Though personally I don't care for the fan service scenes or lack of clothes all the time. Plus the bust sizes increasing isn't that great either. But this is a comic we're talking about so Oda is doing a pretty good job portraying the women of OP.
Video games imo are so much worst then most comics.. Dead or alive volley ball is a perfect example.
-
I do take other things like personality into consideration when it comes to a female character's hawtness though. A personality like Nami's is a huge turn on for me, for example.
-
it`s okay, as long as they have a nice pair of melons :ninja: and beautiful
-
Zoro is plenty enough fanservice for me and I don't even need to see him in a compromising position with any guy.
I guess the common tought among writers in general are that female fanbase love only romance. Doesn't help that almost any manga oriented for girls are about romance or have romance on the foreground.
That said, if Alvida was as "pretty" as she was now back in the first chapters I would still be glad for Luffy punching her. Defeating a girl is bad when she's pretty but if she's ugly it's a-okay. That's not very fair.
Urgh, Big Mom (Mam?) is probably going to be ugly as Kokoro just because male pirates try to beat her up. D:

Its funny how you guys devote this thread to bitching about women wearing slutty clothes, some of you guys need to Visit a Major City in Japan, where pretty much wearing slutty clothes is the norm from all the way from middle school girls, to old ass ladies. . .yes I have seen both, and yes it was disturbing as hell, ESPECIALLY the old lady (the middle school girl shocked me but didn't make me wanna puke) Anyway, shit like that is Normal here, and people don't think twice about it, its only AFTER Japanese women go to the states and get called sluts for wearing normal clothes that they come back and get all bitchy like you guys about it.
Its NORMAL here, young women older women, housewives all dress like sluts most of the time, there is this one milf at work and she dresses like a S L U T! and shes like 38. There isnt this Christianity sex guilt or femini. . .Wymynism shit here, and really the gap between make and female isnt that much. . .untill you reach high ages.
I mean really at every company they make the young people, 26 and under work their asses off for PEANUTS (women and men) hell, its may be "sexist" that most women just go to work as a receptionist to find a job, (I met a girl who went to UCLA and came back to make peanuts as a receptionist) but the men have to work their ASSES off, and make the same amount of money!
Only when they get older, and thus have taken all the abuse from their bosses over the years (believe me its gets bad!) that they can actually start making money (at like what 35 or so) but that time they are so tired that they cant really enjoy it, with having a family to take care of etc. . .
so Really people saying all this stuff dont really know what they are talking about, because you really cant compare the sexual roles in your country and look at the once in Japan from that perspective, especially if you dont know about what is really going on. (I really could go on but I wont as it would be like twenty pages)
its just really you guys are complaining over spilt milk that has nothing to do with anything in Japan. . .
Now if you were all bitching about Otaku culture type mangas then Id understand, as most Japanese people hate that shit too and for really good reason (Otakuism. . .like sexism has a TOTALLY different meaning in Japan than in the west.)
-
Hmmmm…
I'll ask one question, has fanservice afected in some way one piece story?? If not (Which is the case) what's so bad about it? Taking into account the manga is aimed to young males. -
Let me keep this short and simple; get the tits out of comic books and put them where they belong in hentai and porn, kapeesh? If that's what people are looking for they can do it at the appropriately designated media.
-
Nami can be as slutty as she wants as long as Zoro keeps his shirt off.
-

Then why are you reading Shounen manga instead of sth. like childrens' books of 3 years old?
-

Because the story is good, or is that not a possibility? It doesn't need tits and ass to make it any better, if it does for you, let me introduce you to porn, it is much better then still images of semi exposed breasts.
If you are only looking out for your friend or someone you don't know on the other side of the world who enjoys tits in a comic book, don't worry, he/they can voice his concerns himself.
-
I'm so tired of people bitching about the waistline of women in this series. It's his style. Of course its not supposed to be logically drawn. I love Oda's style more so than any other series other than Kentarou Miura who arguably has the most amount of detail in his work today
-
its just really you guys are complaining over spilt milk that has nothing to do with anything in Japan. . .
I understand the Japanese culture, but sexism in any way is bad regardless of what culture its from.
In South Africa one in every three men has admitted to rape, and 25% of women admit to have been raped. It's completely normal there with those high percentages. Does that mean its acceptable? No. And I don't get this whole slutty clothes thing comes from. I've met plenty of Japanese girls from when I went to an international high school and they all dressed very well. -

Real-life women usually have boobs, you know. And some of these infamous real-lifers even have big boobs. Well, let's hide 'em all away in the porn industry so that normal people don't have to look at their boobs.
If the One Piece chicks are intended to be humans, it would be weird not to draw them with boobs. And Nami has been a teenage girl for most of the story's course - if it isn't relatively normal for a teenage girl with boobs to show cleavage, I don't know what is. As long as the story doesn't switch focus and changes Luffy's dream to "I wanna be the person who have grabbed and seen Nami's boobs the most times", I genuinely don't see the problem.
-
i just don't want a mermaid/fishwoman to take jinbes spot as next nakama is that so much to ask? damm all you people for taking this talking to far in the next nakama thread which caused this thread to be made!
i was not going to make this post however this thread seems like it wont die anytime soon so i am making it now

I think what murderedboy means is that they shouldn't show that much fanservice, and seriously womens' breasts don't grow that much after 18 yet Nami grew even more.
The issue with Nami and Robin is that what they wear isn't appropriate to what they do. Short skirts and tank tops are not exactly what you should wear when you have to worry about fighting or scaling islands. Nami was even bitten by an insect that caused her to almost die because of this and yet she still wears revealing outfits.(Then again, Luffy wears sandals everywhere and those aren't exactly fantastic either)

What I got out of this post is that Luffy's sandals are fanservice
But for me, I don't pay attention to it all consciously. Sure maybe I might notice bewbies but it almost seems uh normal and I look past the facts they have revealing clothes. You notice they don't go all revealing on winter islands so the fact they were skimpy clothes shows they are being relaxed.

Real life women also don't go wearing only a bra in their day-to-day life. Thank bro, I don't care how big their tits are, as long as they bother to cover up, unlike nami's expose past-timeskip.
-
They live on a ship and sail under the sun, I'm sure most women would like to be in bikini and get a tan if they lived like this.
-
Franky is running around wearing a thong and being a massive hunk of man
and people can still find a way to bitch about Nami wearing a bikini
-
If you think Franky is fanservice for girls you need a date cause you don't know anything about them.
-
The implication that Franky is some sexual bombshell wasn't my intention
-
If you think Franky is fanservice for girls you need a date cause you don't know anything about them.
If I have learned one thing from listening to women, it is that they have a multitude of tastes so you are right and wrong. Some women will find it attractive and others not.
MOST(keyword) men will almost always like the same traits in women, so it is easier to call them fanservice.
-
It's more that Franky is a big exaggerated character. In a big exaggerated series. It can be argued Franky is a cyborg so who cares what he's wearing, he doesn't really need clothes. But the idea that what Robin and Nami are wearing isn't really "appropriate" seems goofy to me.
I mean honestly, why not? It's still not offensive that he draws some women attractive and has them 'showing it off'. If Oda wants Nami to be a smoking babe, he can do that. If he wants her visuals to be "sexually servicing", go ahead. Maybe he has other reasons, but it's still a series with a demographic. And even then, he still does not reduce her to just that and has always included her as an actual character, with purpose.
I don't mean to say it would be bad if she wore something less … "less", however, but that's just because I don't think it's too interesting looking.
Any actual issues OP might have to be targeted would be found in a lot more than just what the women are wearing, which is solely what my post is targeting. Like if you want to cover any potential real issues, Hancock's character could be seen as a starting place.
-
Hancock is still a disappointment to me in general. Mainly how she ended up with the Mero Fruit, but I already mentioned that way back during her introduction chapters at Amazon Lily. As the first major female pirate shown I honestly expected better than the type of character Hancock ended up being. However, at Marineford at least a little bit was shown of her prowess considering how easily Smoker and the Pacifistas were dealt with by her alleviated that somewhat. As a character Hancock is still crappy but at least she wasn't relegated to taking a backseat amongst the Shichibukai, unlike Bonney who ended up being the first of the Supernovas to be removed from the journey. Either way I'm hoping Big Mom doesn't disappoint whenever she's brought into the story.
The thing boiga mentioned about how women aren't given much visible damage physically during fights I agree with too, like during the fight against Oars at Thriller Bark. Out of everyone that was taken out prior to Nightmare Luffy arriving there really was no reason to have Robin be beaten by removing her shadow.
The manner of dress thing though I don't really see as a problem since in a story like One Piece, practicality with clothing shouldn't ever be brought as an issue regardless of sex. I mean we've seen Luffy climb a mountain in sandals and Nami jump buildings in high heels. Who cares.

This is incorrect. Boa is an awesome character for one. Also bonney wasn't the first super nova eliminated it was capone. Bonney also seems to serve a larger purpose if an admiral went after her himself. It seems she her story isn't finished yet.
-
This is incorrect. Boa is an awesome character for one. Also bonney wasn't the first super nova eliminated it was capone.
Seeing as we don't know what actually happened to Capone you are wrong.
Boa is basically a comic relief character.

If I have learned one thing from listening to women, it is that they have a multitude of tastes so you are right and wrong. Some women will find it attractive and others not.
Very few will tell you that tiny legs, pompadours and speedos are attractive.

Until women come up with a general consensus, errything is fair game
-
I think whether Franky is female fanservice, or not, can be dropped by being entirely irrelevant. Not to mention it doesn't really compare to what is usually given as 'female fanservice' in this demographic of comics, which is big gay Prince of Tennis-style shit, or Sasuke queercity, so it's pretty clear that's not his intention. Franky is just a big exaggerated portrayal of a man.
But yeah, compared to NAMI HAS BIG BOOBS HANGING OUT which is a lame thing to find offensive, Boa's portrayal as a love-struck schoolgirl, despite being a powerful figure, is more of something that can be sighable to me.
-

Are you a real life Paulie?
-
Are you a real life Paulie?
Im also kinda curious too as to why you find the show of clevage/navel/legs so insulting?
-
Cleavage isn't bad.
Neither are legs.
Or navel. It's when it's all at the same time, all the time, when it gets annoying.

Anyway, shit like that is Normal here, and people don't think twice about it, its only AFTER Japanese women go to the states and get called sluts for wearing normal clothes that they come back and get all bitchy like you guys about it.
What the fuck is this bullshit. "slutty" clothing is not the norm in Japan you gibbering idiot.
There isnt this Christianity sex guilt or
Yeah, there's an intense goddamned familial Confusian based social conservatism that functions much the same.
You have absolutely no goddamn idea what you're talking about.
femini. . .Wymynism shit here,
Wow, net. GumGumBattleAxe attacking the NAACP, and now we have you also heaping extremism accusations on the basic idea of feminism.
Japan's deficit on this is a bad fucking thing.
and really the gap between make and female isnt that much. . .untill you reach high ages.
Japan is among the worst of first world countries in gender equality.
I mean really at every company they make the young people, 26 and under work their asses off for PEANUTS (women and men) hell, its may be "sexist" that most women just go to work as a receptionist to find a job, (I met a girl who went to UCLA and came back to make peanuts as a receptionist) but the men have to work their ASSES off, and make the same amount of money!

so Really people saying all this stuff dont really know what they are talking about,
You?
because you really cant compare the sexual roles in your country and look at the once in Japan from that perspective,
Yes you can you imbecile.
You wouldn't think twice about calling Iran on it's shit, but NO NOT JAPANU~!!
Bitch I call my own country on it's shit, give me one goddamn reason to spare Japan.especially if you dont know about what is really going on. (I really could go on but I wont as it would be like twenty pages)
I'll Chinese thread you, you shit posting pwngoat avatar having crybaby.
its just really you guys are complaining over spilt milk that has nothing to do with anything in Japan. . .

Now if you were all bitching about Otaku culture type mangas then Id understand, as most Japanese people hate that shit too and for really good reason (Otakuism. . .like sexism has a TOTALLY different meaning in Japan than in the west.)
No it goddamn doesn't.
-
I guess im just not seeing whats so annoying about it
If it detracted from the characters personality I could see an arguement.
I just dont see whats there to kick up a stink about, one piece is world apart from some ecchi romance manga where there is a clear focus on female goods where as in one piece they just kinda fade to the background -
I can't see anything about Robin's personality that would make her like skimpier outfits. Nami is one thing, but Robin? She's a serious and intelligent adult woman. If I met a woman like her in real life I doubt she would wear what she was wearing after the timeskip.
-

At little garden, she was wearing a long sleeves shirt…But it has been burnt, so it wasn't really because of how she dress that she's been bitten. Morever, because of something like that, she shouldn't wear anymore outfits that she likes ?
-
i dont see a connection between a womens intellgence and her clothing preferences. Some of the most intellgent girls I know are also some of the most attractive and they personally like showing a bit of cleavage
this is no worse then what robin is wearing, a long as dress and a zip up top with a bit of cleavage
when i looked a robin i hardly thought bom chika wa wa!!
