I only watched regularley till the end of the Orange Islands, then I moved to Germany and always missed it… Then I only watched sometimes. I hated the Hoenn part, though. I'd say Kanto was best.. But Johto had some cool episodes, like this episode I think at the Lake of Rage where Team Rocket are making Pokemon evil and stuff. Lance was there if I remember correctly. Also I think Dragonite went crazy and battled against Charizard, which was cool. Not sure if that was a different epusode, though.

I'd have to give it to Sinnou, it just feels like the writers have finally realized how to do an arc. The villain gang (Galaxy Gang) feels like an actual threat (unlike Magma gang & Aqua gang) and they're paced pretty well (though the manga does them (them being Galaxy gang) great justice) , Musashi & Kojiro are used for more than just random comic relief
! Musashi actually got to the Grand Festival, without cheating/on her own~ and, what other region brought back a character after 12 years? :P
Because, it's better?
You're damn right it is. I haven't seen that much of the Japanese version though(I've heard most of the openings and endings though, which I love). A few episodes and some movies. Not too many people sub Pokemon.
-
Johto did have that gang war episode between Vileplum and Bellossoms. Shit was hardcore.
There was also that one with the Heracross and the Pinsir.
Anyways my favorite has to be Kanto for both nostalgia and entertainment value.
-
The first one was the best one. I don't even count the rest. To me, it ended after season 1.
-
1st was the best, Johto was great imo…especially the Pokemon league with Ash vs Gary and then vs Harrison..that guy with the Blaziken..he was awesome, a pity we never saw him again. Others have been good...nothing special..but good..and enjoyable.
If there is 1 standout thing for me in Sinnoh is our angelic pokemon champion Cynthia..beautiful and deadily with her pokemon skills. She owns everyone.
-

I can understand liking the Johto league…but you liked all of Johto? Do you realized how head-banging that series was!? (particularly with writers who seemed to know what they were doing at first, magically vanished or were over-dictated by the management [thus why Serebii was a movie and not in the GS ball like it was supposed to be] and didn't seem to regain their sense of sanity until just before the league when they saw the light at the end of the tunnel?) Yeah…as a veteran who survived all of Johto, I prefer the later series when the writers actually gave a damn again.
-
Are there any subs for the show after johto? I would rather die than watch 4kids so…

Had a catchy theme though.
-
The first series was awesome, and the first bit of Johto. Didn't really like the rest of it. I really liked Hoenn, though. Sinnoh sucks for me.
Am I the only one who thinks that Ash slowly lost the personality he had in the first series?
-
I stopped watching when the Orange Islands came around so all I've got's the first series. The Orange Islands just didn't interest me that much. I wanted gym battles, not glorified minigames. Plus Tracy was no Brock.
I do remember believing the Orange Islands were accessible from the water bit in the game and thus wasting countless hours trying to get past every blockade in that area. I was a stupid child.
-
@Badass:

I think that's because the writers wanted him to mature as time went on. He became more experienced, and a mentor to others as the series progressed. That, and with his rivalry with Gary having diminished a lot by the end of the first series, he couldn't really be all that child-like anymore. Gary grew some balls in Johto, so Ash had to as well.
-

We at PocketMonsters have subbed everything from DP94 and up, and we're subbing the original series and Advanced Generation from the beginning as side projects. We're up to PM16 and AG4 respectively.
-
I really enjoyed the manga but I just dislike the newer pokemon generations that I couldn't really get into anything past Silver/Gold (even those I was meh about several pokemon). Same holds true for when I played the games. How the Elite Four was portrayed in the manga was awesome, wish they were more like that in the games. Also, Red is badass.
As for the anime… I stopped watching sometime after the movie with Lugia came out. Just didn't hold my interest anymore though as a kid I really did like the series for the first generation. For some reason, I most remember the match against Blaine.

Where are your releases available at these days, now they're no longer at edward_k.

They're IRC-only nowadays.

What's the etiquette there? The rules say if you want files bugger off, the channel says you need to be voiced to list(which having barely used irc in five years I'm not sure of). Is there a preferred process?

Yeah, but he didn't become mature, just plain and depth-less. He has very little to no personality now. And it's kinda odd to watch, which is part of the reason I don't watch it often.

It's not just that, Ash still has no common sense when it comes to battling, despite his supposed 'mentor' status to Dawn. During his full battle against Paul, he sent Pikachu against Torterra, which is completely stupid and illogical considering that Torterra is a grass/ground type.

There is. Type !fst in the channel for an in-depth guide to setting up a file server, getting voiced, downloading files, and anything else you need to know. It's not a particularly hard process. There's also heaps of people in the channel who'd be happy to help you setting up an fserver if you still can't figure it out.

The best moment in all of pokemon, for me, is when Ash beats Gary in the silver cup at the end of Johto. I know heracross totally should've lost against magmar, and charizard against blastoise, but shut up.
coming in at a close second was the battle against the orange islands champion, where pikachu electrocuted a dragonite thru its antennae.
-
As great as the Gary stuff has been, I like how developed the Paul rivalry has been all series and sort of want to see how it climaxes. I just hope it doesn't get hammy.
-

The manga by Toshihiro Ono did everything so much better in every respect.
-
I miss when James used to embrace his inner Queen. :( I really like Hoenn, but there is a severe lack of James in drag.

Some of the pokemon designs in that manga scared me the first time i saw then.
Props to the author to make pokemon scary.

What personality? He really didn't have much of one (before AG) besides acting like a noob all the time.

Hahaha, what? Me thinks you been watching too much dub, son.

Idk man, I haven't seen Pokemon since some random episode in Hoenn. It might be an issue with the dubbing, since vocals have a lot to do with personality. As for maturation, is he still 10? Idk if time actually progresses in Pokemon. If it doesn't, then that could be the reason, since if he's 10, he really can't be all that mature, otherwise it wouldn't be appealing to kids.
-
Hahaha, what? Me thinks you been watching too much dub, son.
Yeah, the dub ups the ante, as it were, but it was those Japanese animators who drew him in dresses and wigs episode after episode…
(I don't know about the whole soda can tab, bit, but the rest…)
-
Dub adding context aside.
James dressed as a flaming moltres.
Case closed.
-
…which said scene was ruined by the dub. pulls random quote from Bulbagarden:
The whole Moltres James/Fire Kojirou thing is blown out of proportion. The dub really, really gayed it out, but in the original Kojirou was more like "I'M THE BIGGEST BADDEST SUPERHERO EVER AND YOU SHOULD ALL THINK I'M THE AWESOMEST!!!". Musashi and Nyasu were weirded out by his behavior in that episode, for sure, but they were embarrassed by Kojirou's usage of archaic, overly poetic language more than anything else. They were all "it's nice that you're confident and all and we don't even mind the outfit but jeez, you can talk like a normal person!"
Granted, it WAS a spandex chicken suit. But Superman wears spandex and nobody thinks HE'S gay. …Well, mostly. The point is, Kojirou's a dork and thought he was awesome and that was the point.
–----------
@Carrots:Yeah, the dub ups the ante, as it were, but it was those Japanese animators who drew him in dresses and wigs episode after episode…
That's pretty one-sided thinking, a lot of the times he dressed up was to reference some cultural thing not him being gay.
-

Ruined?
Or made awesome?
As for Superman. Has two identities, one of which is hidden from the world. Hides his marriage. Wears spandex tights, and underwear on the outside. Works out. Has an eternal rivalry with a bitter old bald man. Draw your own conclusions on that one.
That's pretty one-sided thinking, a lot of the times he dressed up was to reference some cultural thing not him being gay.
In instances where both he AND Jessie were pretending to be women, or men? Okay.
But.The number of instances where he dressed as a woman, while Jessie dressed as a man, are mind boggling.
Clearly they enjoyed cross dressing.
-
Pokemopolis tells a lot of truthful things. A tad biased and sick, but truthful.
Besides, I still think James "not a piece of fruit, no matter what my fans think" was a shotout to them.
-
I personally think the Pokemon Adventures manga is way better then the anime, but I love Ash so I watch both :/
-
I think the Pokemon dub is one of the most impressive around specifically because they add their own spin to the comedy.
To this day, I can still watch the first few seasons of the dub and just love every minute of it. Frankly, I don't think the Team Rocket in the original Japanese is nearly as funny.
My point: The 4Kids dub of Pokemon rocks my socks.
-
I stopped watching Pokemon when they had the contest bullshit every other episode.
-

When did this happen? Last I checked they only had contests every 15-30 episodes, in about the same ratio as gym battles.

Those are also my number 1 and 2 favorite battles, but I still have a lot of problems with Gary losing that match.
He didn't even use Umbreon!!! The pokemon that all his appearances in the Johto seasons had built up was not seen at all. And his Arcanine (the pokemon that his Kanto appearances tended to build up) got KOed instantly.
I love the Drake battle at Pummelo. It was the anime's first full 6-on-6 battle that I saw, and it was excellent. Ono's manga version of that fight was undeniably better, though. Internal electrocution! I would not go as far as saying Ono did everything better, though. The "Rudy being a tranny" scene is one of the lame examples, and actually ruined a character I liked in the anime for me.
-
Characterization, pacing, design, battle scenes, the story actually having resolution? Ono did pretty much everything better. Particularly the league and all the stuff with Richie and Ash losing control of Charizard.
Tho there was also apparently crazy ammounts of T&A in the original japanese version. That's kind of… wierd, given the ages involved.

I agree with this post. I really can't add much to it. Those two fights are why I liked those two regions best. The Gary fight had it's flaws, but was probably my favorite anyway.

First part I agree with. Though he had the rare moment of not pulling it off so well. Largely handled things brilliantly though. Second part I must make the obligatory reference to my new face's taste in women:
-
First season is the best, of course. It was the only series that felt like an exotic, original world - I mean, people from every major time period presented in Japanese pulp fiction made an appearance, the world was vast and the adventure one of excitement. The world wasn't sickly clean like Hikaru no Go but not as filthy as Akagi.
Orange goes right up there, with Drake's battle as one of the series best. I haven't kept up since Johto, since following the first like 10 episodes of Johto everyone got nerfed.
I used to be fairly famous in the Pokemon community back in the day. Good times, good times.
-
I haven't read much of the pokemon manga, only the stuff involving Red.
As for the anime, eh, I watch it from time to time. First season was the best, but Orange Islands were pretty rad too.

Is there a version of Dengeki Pikachu that isn't massacred by Viz? Did any groups scan it?

Not that I know of, but a little bit of hunting can find the censored images.
Mostly in the outfits the girls had. And of course the pages being flipped.
Misty's swimsuit was particularly uhm… showy. Though honestly, for the most part, I actually prefer the censored versions. The black body suit looks better and more practical than uhm... THAT .
And again. She's like, 12.

Wow….In Pocket Monsters. Well I grew up with the 1st season. Hell i still have the 1st VHS season 1 set in my room in order. But since i dont own a VHS theres no point.
I always get pissed that Pikachu would lose a fight, i always go on game logic by the show and i always say to myself "Pikachu should be lvl 100 and fuck everyone up".
-

Even in the anime, like the games, Pikachu naturally aren't very strong. Red's Lv. 100 Pikachu was fairly easy to beat, y'know?
I do have to agree Pikachu's power tends to fluctuate between episodes, and its original status as a freakishly powerful Pikachu seems to have diminished.

Don't tell Team Rocket. :ninja: They've spent the past 15 (?) years chasing that thing.

Towards the end of a region arc, it is reallly strong..and all of a sudden it just resets again. It goes from beating a Regice, to losing pokemon it should actually beat like Busyel

The fact is, Pikachus only have a lifespan of three years. Ash keeps leveling it up, it gets to legendary defeating status, then it dies. It is quietly replaced by Brock who has been through this a few times now, and he doesn't tell Ash.
Lo and behold, Ash is granted a new level one Pikachu, which, as a part of its natural instinct, must destroy at least one girl's bicycle in order to bond with Ash.

It's all so clear now… but wait... they're replacing Brock in Best Wishes... don't tell me no one will be around to replace Ash's Pikachu?
