@JERK:
I wonder who the Magus crewmember will be as we'll probably have one.
What exactly are you talking about? Magus. . .????

Are you trying to suggest a wizard or simply the OLD meaning of Magus which is roughly a 'wise old man'.
Oda has already said - no magic.
So lets assume you mean a wise old man:
We won't get one, we've got lots of them on the side skirts ready to look out for the SHs when necessary so there's no need for one to join.
Look how many we've seen so far, some the SHs have helped, some that have helped them:
Gan Fall
Garp
Rayleigh
Shanks (ish)
Jimbei
King of Alabasta
a few other random characters too but you get the idea.
He's talking about Magus from Chrono Trigger. I don't know thou if he refers to having a "bad guy" joining the crew, or some kind of "semi-recurrent enemy" that will later join the SH. And before you guys jump and say "Franky was a former enemy!" I'm referring to having some kind of anthagonist (like Smoker) who after some arcs, joins the SH for some reason.

Perhaps in order to work with them, but not really as a true member of the crew? (I would love it is Smoker came, and brought Tashigi with him, lol)

We dont really need smoker, he's basically just a Marine version of Zoro's personality. No crew needs 2 impervious badasses.
Yeah I know. But in OP there are many pirates that seem to be good people and respected by everyone. Caribou is ugly, evil, pervert, he's got no charisma… He's an atypical pirate in OP world, but a typical pirate in real word.
Uh, no. Most pirates in One Piece are still evil. Its just a few have been focused on who are good.
Chrono Trigger's Magus kind of character wouldn't be a bad idea for the crew.
When did Magus ever mean wise old man?
I would like to see a design of a potential SH with the characteristics of a hippy, to me that would add even more humour and chemistry amongst the crew. If one were to join ideally I would enjoy seeing he/she having a DF power similar to that of poison ivy from batman , but of its powers I have no clue.
LOL, hippy. Good times.

Bingo.
Not even necessarily an enemy, just a long recurrent major face.

Buggy, Croc and Smoker fit this definition. I can't see any of them being SH. Forming alliances, yes; they, more or less, already did.
Recurring means from now (chapter 600 + or -) till 100-200 chapters in the future, or recurring from the past chapters?
Off-Topic: I killed Magus the first time I played Chrono Trigger. Didn't even think that, not killing him, he would join and be playable. The same happened to me with some Suikoden generals; killed them. WTF was I thinking back then?

True enough. =P I wanna see him get his ass beat so bad. >.<

hmm, then we already have a broad list of options
We dont really need smoker, he's basically just a Marine version of Zoro's personality. No crew needs 2 impervious badasses.
It's impossible for Smoker to join, he was just an example of a recurring anthagonist of the SH's.

How about someone NEW? like some kind of free lancer ex-marine who's strong and who the WG from time to time ask for his aid to deal with some pirates. It would be cool to see some badass ex-marine with a strong sense of justice who starts to chase Luffy around (kinda like Smoker), but ends up seeing the true nature of Luffy and his crew after an arc or two.
It would take a hell of a time for him (or her) to join given the complexity in how their relationships would build, but would also give a very good depth in his/her character before joining (why he left the marines, his achievements, what kind of attachments does he/she have with the marines to still cooperate with them, etc). And that could be enough for that NN to be quite unique.

Really off topic, but your sig…. It is just amazing. I can't stop watching it. So addicting
Mermaid princess won't join. Name isn't simple enough. Not very catchy. Simple as that.

Everyone's favorite blue haired princess?
(So, it has to be someone they've encountered before and has had tabs kept on them by Oda…Hatchi? Zoro's bounty hunter pals? Ehhh. There has to be better candidates out there for this.)

This is a terrible, but also very true point.
Weird how this makes no sense, but also a lot of sense O.o
But like Franky, she could have a nickname of some sort</nico:<>
Everyone's favorite blue haired princess?
They made a pretty big point back in Alabasta that Vivi would NOT be joining. Ever.
(So, it has to be someone they've encountered before and has had tabs kept on them by Oda…Hatchi?
Already living the dream and not really a recurring character.
Zoro's bounty hunter pals? Ehhh.
Haven't seen 'em since East Blue and they were never all that interesting to begin with.

Eh, I can't really think of anyone offhand.
Already living the dream and not really a recurring character.
Not really saying that Hatchi will join by any means, but he's already appeared in 2 arcs, had a cover story, and will probably appear eventually on FI. He is pretty recurring.

So is Buggy but you don't see him joining the crew do you?
Either Jinbe or one of Toms family will be joining as a helmsman, fishman karate user and can save devil fruit users who fall into the water without putting himself/herself in danger by jumping into the water and can probly get more than one at a time and fast.

Me neither. The furthest step I've got with some people is friend/ally of Straw Hats, but none of them actually joining the crew.
definately think 1 of them will have to be a merman! gotta get some fishman karate in the crew :)
Something is telling me that a merman wont join the crew. I don't think anyone is joining the crew this arc for some reason.

None. The theory of having a recurrent char joining the crew later is more fanfiction than a theory. It would be cool to see a new char filling that profile tho'.

There is a fishman karate dojo that we haven't seen yet. I guess the next crewmate will be a student of this dojo.

Could be but I dunno I just have this feeling that a merman won't join. But who knows what could happen. X=
It's a shame those bubbles only works in SA area, a Bubble Engineer position sounds pretty nifty for the SH

There's no evidence that mermen can learn fishman karate yet.

yeah, let's completely forget the fact that fishman slavery and discrimination has been a recurring theme for several arcs now, fishman island has been an arc planned by Oda since East Blue. also nevermind that the only other person who had the guts to do what Luffy did was also a fishman.
I'm not saying a fishman will join the crew, but there's more to it than you can dismiss with "a feeling."
I think hyozo might have a chance. But that is only becuase Luffy has shown some kind of interest in him.
But then again who knows, he is just the only one I can see strong enough that as been shown in this arc, blocking an attack from luffy now can't be easy.

Yeah true but was just stating that I think a fisherman may not join. I didn't dismiss it as I said that there is a possibility that one will. I was just stating that to me it feels like one won't join.
A fisherman? Don't Ussop and Luffy do the fishing?
Am I the only person who feels that Caribou won't join because he's too ugly/creepy looking?

Yes.
Everyone else thinks he won't join because he's an unrepentant psychopath who buries people alive for fun.

Well I meant taking that into consideration as well, since some believe that as of now, his actions are forgivable.

Allow me to put like thus: Even if Caribou wasn't a serial killer, didn't bury people alive, didn't express an intrest to kill the Straw Hats multiple times, but kidnapping Mermaids to sell on the slave market for money alone, something that caused our heroes quite a bit of grief, means he was DQ'd for Nakamaship right there alone.

But doesn't all that make him a good guy? =P

There is absolutely no reason to feel that way.
i have a feeling that the next nakama could be one of tom's relatives, maybe someone who doesn't like at all hodi jones, maybe who also hates drugs and big mom factory ( if there's a connection between these 2 element)
Regarding the "joining forces with an old enemy" thing… I've heard that it was actually referring to Crocodile, and that people just took the quote a bit out of context to make it seem more as if it had to be referring to that person becoming an actual crewmate. But the general consensus around here is that this person has yet to reappear, then?
Does anyone know what the original quote said exactly?
