Decent chapter. The part where the two random girls were yakking away about how much they hated their fathers was over-the-top to say the least, but beyond that, the chapter was fairly well-done by Fairy Tail standards, and I'm glad that we aren't going to spend any more time on that Twilight Ogre guild.

and I'm glad that we aren't going to spend any more time on that Twilight Ogre guild.
I'm actually expecting a vampire ogre showing up, and he sparkles in the sunlight. :ninja:
-
Nothing particularly bad happening this chapter, just the dialogue in this chapter is some of the worst I ever read.
I always was distracted by mashimas lazy world building, dumb plot and horrendous characters, but the way he writes dialogue might just be as bad.
Like these two girls, are you serious? Who the fuck talk like that, especially in public where everybody can hear what they say?
"Why is it…? I'm so sad....and so lonely....but the tears just wont come out."...
-
A new awesome arc finally begins…
NOT . -
Anyone notice that Mashima, again, solved a problem for his main characters in record time? Lucy's homelessness and daddy issue lasted not even the whole chapter. I like that her dad got a little character development (he was a scumbag last we saw him right?), but this really didn't lead anywhere.
I also like that the Fairy Tail Guild gets out of their debt by beating their debtors. You know, that's still illegal even if that guild is a bunch of "bad guys." Really, Marijane lost her powers for awile and now she goes demon just to muscle these people out of the money they owed? Why am I supposed to like this guild again?
-
Man, those two girls were so forced, why not just put in a bunch of generic bullies….oh wait.
-
I'm not really surprised by the two girls wishing death on their father like its nothing. Stuff like that happens more often then you would like to think and its all over youtube.
The world is a cruel place but Mashima did sort of pepper it on to make Lucy feel some sort of way. -
I find the one-dimensional horribleness of both Twilight Ogre and of those two girls who were contrivedly badmouthing their fathers in front of Lucy extremely annoying.
-

What I found more repulsive is that stupid landlord who kept charging Lucy for seven years AFTER she went missing and then acted like a nice mentor figure even though she was only acting nice because she got paid her seven years worth of rent. The hell?
-

The world is a cruel place but Mashima did sort of pepper it on to make Lucy feel some sort of way.I have never seen anyone just talking this nonchalantly about wishing one of their parents to die, because just casually talking about in public makes you look like a nutjob. None of these girls had an emotional outburst or anything that would justify this, it's completely insane and psychotic behavior.
And who even gives a fuck about youtube? It's the internet, the most rotten place to ever exist, people act different on it than they do in real life because they still have some anonymity. How is that connected to how normal people act in public.
Edit: Also, what just Thousand Lion-chan said. What the fuck is wrong with people in the fairy tail universe? -
Well this is Fairy Tail world, where instead of a personality you have to be one dimensional instead.
-
Even a relatively decent FT chapter has such unpleasant flaws. Sigh, Mashima.
@No:
If her father could afford that, and was sending stuff over all the time, why didn't he just pay the rent every month ? Why did he spontaneously decide to pay the rent for an apartment that hasn't been payed for 7 years just as he's about to die ?
As I unterstood it, he waited for a project of his to finish and then pay for Lucy. Basically, he didn't have money until recently.
I also like that the Fairy Tail Guild gets out of their debt by beating their debtors. You know, that's still illegal even if that guild is a bunch of "bad guys." Everything considered, would you really accept FAiry TAil apologizing and paying up to these douchebags?
@Thousand:
What I found more repulsive is that stupid landlord who kept charging Lucy for seven years AFTER she went missing and then acted like a nice mentor figure even though she was only acting nice because she got paid her seven years worth of rent. The hell?
Exactly.
"So, I took your father's last money as your rent for the seven years you didn't live at my place, and some clothes of yours, and now we're fine. Yay?"
-
Yeah, that part with the two girls was fucking awful. Mashima didn't even bother cutting the cookie out: he just took a picture of the cookie cutter template.
Also, like someone said, who the fuck just casually says "lol I wish my dad was dead!!" I could sort of see someone wishing their father was dead in a very grim and serious sort of setting, but who the fuck just walks around in broad daylight talking about how they want their relatives to die (and in a jocular matter at that)? It's genuinely baffling how bad of a scene that was.
-
The chapter was okay, I guess. The girls were really jarring, though. Who talks like that? It was obvious they were there to upset Lucy. A little more subtlety would have been nice with that.
-
I wish my dad was dead.

People act out in general all the time regardless of whether it makes others uncomfortable or not so why would this be any different?
I'm not talking about immature anonymous comments on a video, I'm talking about actual occurrences in real lifeObviously psychotic behavior is committed every day on this planet and cosigned by others at that. If you don't think people go around wishing death on their parents in public then you would also have to question the plausibility of every other incredibly stupid loud outburst.
People do stupid things

I didn't know 2 terribly executed, throw away, minute made characters had this much depth.

Fairy Taint (I wish my Dad was dead) Discussion II
-
Nice chapter.
I think all that has needed to be said about the two girls has been said. They were forced and unlikable. As for Marakov, Marijaine, and Erza beating up their debt collectors I really liked that scene. They were fodder scumbags and if anything Fairy Tail owed them a beatdown.
-

Someone might say something like that in a quiet conversation between friends or something sure, but not yelling it at the top of their lungs. It was a poorly written event, nothing else. It's like a stereotypical jock bully in an 80's teen movie, it's just not good.
-
Actually, this reminds me of when young Ace got offended about fodder talking crap about Roger. Sorta was just there to piss Ace off, but still felt more natural than this.

DOY !

No, that was before he lost everything and began stalking Lucy.

Well Roger was infamous, as well as there were apparently alot of people he made enemies with during his lifetime, plus there's the WG propaganda, so, yeah, pretty much.

My dad never took me fishing.

My dad never took me fishing.
I wish he was dead!
Oh wait.. He is dead.
Well, I hope he burns in hell! It's sad when this is a more deserving reason for everlasting damnation then what the title character got in "Drag me to Hell".
Seriously, I hate that movie and I never even saw it !
-
Not a good chapter. It wasn't sad or moving at all.
-
@No:

That was a movie about bulimia. It makes much more sense if you think of it like that if you know what bulimia does to someone's mind. But yes it's terrible lol.
As for Fairy Tail. Yeah this chapter was rushed and forced. I think people forget how over dramatic teenagers can be. Especially kids that are spoiled in all the wrong ways. "You never let me do anything! I hate you! I wish you were dead! I wish I was dead! Everyone should die!" Then twenty minutes later they come back all "Hi Daddy! Can I borrow the car?"
-
RIP Lucys dad. We shall always remember you for the time you started major guild warfare in order to ground your daughter. I guess you did some other stuff that was nice too, because I'm expected to care about you now, but I forget.
And lol at Fairy Tail taking a hint from Glitter in dealing with debt collectors. "I may legally owe you money, but seeing how you're a douchebag, I'll just kick your ass instead"
-
Chapter felt alright, but the dead father thing went so fast again, it´s almost bad.
What´s with this timeskip? So pointless, ugh .. -
@The:
And lol at Fairy Tail taking a hint from Glitter in dealing with debt collectors. "I may legally owe you money, but seeing how you're a douchebag, I'll just kick your ass instead"
It's hilarious since this Twilight Ogre is the only reason these characters have a guild to come back to in the first place. For a guild that supposedly was all about friendship and sticking together a whole lot of them jumped ship once the stronger guild members disappeared.
Beat them up for being dicks, that's fine I guess, but not paying them back is just stupid. Such appealing characters.
-
Worst creditors I've ever seen. I'm surprised TO and the landlady are still in business.
-
barely any complaints here, it was a warming chapter marred only by the 2 forced obnoxious girls.
lol @ Markrov & Co beating up Ogre.
-
I'm actually expecting a vampire ogre showing up, and he sparkles in the sunlight. :ninja:

You should check that movie out it's Sam raimi at his best and by that I mean back at his comedy horror roots like Evil Dead,Evil Dead2 & Army of Darkness.
The plus is that there is nothing resembling a douche bag Peter Parker doing lounge singing at a small open mic jazz joint. -
As for the landlady I have a feeling that Lucy's dad probably told her not to re-rent the apartment since he had a guy feeling Lucy would come back.
It's still stupid as TLC said, but with this chapter she isn't as much as a delusional cunt as she was portrayed before.
-
Sadly my friends seem to have fallen for the "Calm before the TROLLOLOLOLOLOL" once more even though they were all considering quitting Fairy Tail at the end of that last arc. =/
-
I really liked reading the posts here xD. Fairy Tail huh… It's good to see that the people here aren't as obsessed with it as a lot of other One Piece fans I've run into. I read Fairy Tail for a while and it was all right... but I keep seeing people put it on the same level as One Piece, as if they go hand in hand or something, as if they're remotely similar.
I mean, aside from the fact that there are slight character and plot resemblances, (Lucy - Nami, Guilds - Pirate Crews, Luffy - Natsu... all very poor, less interesting imitations, I must add) One Piece is 100% better planned, with 100% better characterization and story telling. Fairy Tail is just a bunch of random crud thrown together that somehow manages to create something mildly entertaining. Think Erza might be the only original thing about it.
Just glad to see that the world hadn't gone as insane as I thought it had. I was really starting to think the general intelligent public was going to start considering the possibility that Fairy Tail might out do One Piece. Which is absurd.
That being said, I really need to catch up with the chapters... there was a time lapse? THE HELL? Already!? Fairy Tail moves way too fast. The arcs, fights, characters... all rushed to hell. It makes me want to throw up sometimes, yet somehow I still prefer it to Naruto.
-
@The:

he shall be missed

That would actually somewhat justify this complete lack of logic.
So it's safe to say Hiro won't come within sniffing distance of using it.

Speaking of One Piece, I compared the girls to characters like Stelly in this lovely review I typed out for a review blog I may or may not put together.
Fairy Tail 257: Father's 7 Years or Daddy Must Die
! Ah, Fairy Tail. I will clear this up: I'm actually fond of this series. But that doesn't change the fact that it's, well, a poor excuse for a manga. The last three arcs, while being promising, fell flat with "Deus Ex Mashima" up the wazoo. Then we get a timeskip, presumably because "all the cool kids are doing it". Fresh start for the series? Ha!
! But that's neither here nor there, as I'm here to talk about, well, Chapter 257. The chapter opens with a riveting re-introduction to the plot device Romeo:
!
No, Mashima, I'm not even going to acknowledge this as a character.
! Yes, that's the entire point of Romeo's existence. To provide cheesy melodrama that gets resolved in 1.5 chapters. To be fair, Romeo doesn't even appear in this chapter…
! The chapter basically picks up where last week's admittedly inoffensive chapter left off:
!
Lucy: Daddy…
Aunt Figg: DADDY is DEAD.
! On this week's episode, we're supposed to care about a character we don't care about because her daddy (another character we don't care about) has died.
!
A graphical representation of how much we care.
! Yes, this chapter wants to be a tear jerker.
!
I get the feeling it succeeded.
! To be fair, this isn't a particularly "bad" chapter, and it has its moments. Natsu does something remotely intelligent. No, Snake, we're not kidding you.
!
Give him a moment. News like this doesn't come often.
! There are a couple other moments in the chapter, and it's really not too bad, but everything about the chapter just feels contrived. For starters…
!
Oh look. It's Stelly!
! Mashima introduces us to a couple of plot devices that kind of remind me of our good friends in Goa from One Piece. You know the ones. They use the same tone as the nobles, wishing that their father would just die. To be absolutely fair, I'm not going to completely absolve Oda of his sins. The nobles of Goa just felt so forced themselves. But it's important to note that there is one giant fundamental flaw in Fairy Tail's plot devices: Where the hell did these bitches even come from?
! Um, Mashima, I'm not going to accuse you of copying Oda, but DUDE! The nobles of Goa were established douchebags and made sense in context; they made sense to the story. These girls are just random teenagers acting like the nobles of Goa! Nobody else in this town has the same kind of douche-baggery attitude like that! There's no context behind them, no symbolism. They're just PLOT DEVICES.
!
At least have the dignity to give your plot devices some character, Mashima.
! Why am I complaining so much about this? Because it takes a scene that we're supposed to care about (mind you, we already don't care about it) and shits all over it with no regard to tact or subtlety whatsoever. Had Mashima not thrown in the "I wish my daddy was dead" line, there'd be at least some degree of subtlety or whatnot. Instead, we're treated to pointless, obnoxious melodrama.
! Speaking of pointless melodrama, that's ultimately all this chapter is. I don't give a fuck about Lucy's dad or Lucy or anything. If you wanted me to, at least have the goddamn decency to flesh their relationship out. Stop glazing over the details, Mashima! You can't just season a series with random scenes and call it emotionally gripping. Stop selling the reader so short and actually give us something to INVEST to. We care about characters, not plot devices.
! It's not just Lucy's dad: It's UltearxMeredy, it's Cana and Gildartz, it's Erza and Gerard, it's Edoras, it's Cait Shelter, it's Lisanna. God damn, Mashima, are you TRYING to outdo Square Enix in cheese production?
!
Fairy Tail makes Final Faggotry XIII look like a Shakespearean classic. This is a problem.
! Finally, in "Deus Ex Mashima" fashion, the rent gag from last chapter becomes a plot point… by closing the plot point. If you're going to introduce a freakin' gag, make it a one-off gag or properly flesh it out into a plot point. This is a perfect example of why Fairy Tail is (excuse my play on words) very fail. There needs to be PAYOFF.
!
Abed: It's Fairy Tail, Volume 1 on dvd.
Pierce: That’s the meaning of Christmas?
Abed: No, it’s a metaphor. It represents lack of payoff.
! Also, Mashima closes the Twilight Ogre plotline.
!
No, not those Twilight Ogres.
! Guess when it started? Like, two chapters ago! Guess how it ended? With no payoff! No climactic confrontation, no struggle, no nothing. Just Erza, Mirajane, and Makarov going and curbstomping things, proving that the rest of the guild are fucking pussies. Didn't Twilight Ogre LOAN FT money in the first place? Umm… wow. I fucking hate you, Fairy Tail. I fucking hate you, Fairy Tail. (Yes, those were two different sentences.)
! Kitsune's Verdict: 5.5/10 (for a Fairy Tail chapter) -

Fairy Tail makes Final Faggotry XIII look like a Shakespearean classic. This is a problem.
! Finally, in "Deus Ex Mashima" fashion, the rent gag from last chapter becomes a plot point… by closing the plot point. If you're going to introduce a freakin' gag, make it a one-off gag or properly flesh it out into a plot point. This is a perfect example of why Fairy Tail is (excuse my play on words) very fail. There needs to be PAYOFF.

Abed: It's Fairy Tail, Volume 1 on dvd.
Pierce: That’s the meaning of Christmas?
Abed: No, it’s a metaphor. It represents lack of payoff.
! Also, Mashima closes the Twilight Ogre plotline.

! Kitsune's Verdict: 5.5/10 (for a Fairy Tail chapter)Nice review. If you're really interested, I'd even invite you to post this on our Blog.

Oh come now, Rave isn't THAT bad :/
Run you fool !
Run before Zephos sees you !
-
You think he'd give a shit about this topic?
-
Deus Ex Mashima is very clever. I hope it spreads.
I started reading Rave at one point. It seemed alright. Though this was back in 07 when FT first came about and I was deluded in to thinking I could read it in Japanese.

After reading all these posts, I felt inclined to see all the hub bub about this chapter.
Oh god. That scene with the two girls was so forced it was hilarious. It honestly felt like a comedic chapter. They broke the whole mood.
You know like those cartoons where a character wants something really badly, and everywhere they go they see people wasting that same thing in various silly ways? like that.

@No:
Run you fool !
Run before Zephos sees you !
Oh, now I remember why I hate this thread.

he's going to burn me alive…

It's been a while since I've seen you not being cynical and kind of depressed, Hiroy. What happened.

I miss just Hinscher and Fullmetal Lich. I got bored with picking on everyone else.
They were fun.
Came up with new material.
Every week.
-
Didn't Fullmetal's banning from this thread result from him relying on the same material?
