Then because of what?
Funimation dvd discussion II ( UPDATED 8/4/12, FIRST POST FOR F.A.Q)

Then because of what?
-
-
If you could choose between Viz or FUNimation to license the series, which one would you choose and why?
-
Oh I prefer Funimation for any series I want licensed as a rule. Thing if, there is no reason for Viz to go after the One Piece anime. If Funimation doesn't go after it, then why the hell would Viz want it if Funimation didn't care enough to continue it (unless they went with a sub only route, but if that were to happen it would probably be Section23, not Viz, that would do that - at least that's my best guess).
If One Piece is doing well Funimation probably has first crack at it.
Additionally, we have been told to be patient.
Funimation is up front whenever they drop a series. They don't beat around the bush. They don't say they can't talk about. They answer fan questions directly and say they aren't going to continue the series. Funimation is doing the exact OPPOSITE of that. They ARE beating around the bush. They ARE saying they can't talk about it. They are dodging fan questions with vague answers and they have said before THEY ARE NOT GOING TO DROP THE SERIES.
-
I loathe Ocean Group dubs, which is odds are, who they'd stick with the job. I would much rather Funimation continue it because they approach voice acting from a different angle (theater roots). If they don't continue the dub, hopefully they might opt for sub only legal R1 releases at least.
-

Funimation, because I doubt we'd have the translated openings and endings with Viz, plus, dat voice cast. Can't replace 'em.
Sneaks a glance at Naruto Shippuden, Kakaishi, and Bleach… Then again, Viz probably could've gotten One Piece back on TV faster…:ninja:
I'll be quiet now.
-
Viz manages to make incredibly boring dubs even with talents such as Steve Blum and Nolan North at their disposal. Ocean dubs sound phony 90% of the time (the exceptions are Death Note and Black Lagoon). FUNi dubs also have somewhat cheesy voice acting, but that's part of the appeal for me.
-
Hey Funimation forget trying to licence the next 205 episodes and just licence the next 13 eps. I mean who else out there is trying to outbid you? Is there another company willing to start dubbing the series?
Ouch I wish I hadn't posted this now. It sounds sooooo ignant.
Yes.
That was very ignant of you.

This right here, mates.
I always knew Funimation wouldn't drop One Piece without telling us up front about it. Yet some people love to worry and pull their hair when they can't even be patient for at least a couple more months. -
It's not a bad thing that FUNimation hasn't said anything yet, but who knows what they'll say about the future of "One Piece" when the time is right,
-
Whenever i go to Best Buy or some store that sells DVDs i can never find any One Piece DVDs outside of the very first damn voyage. Its really annoying and i'm sick of hunting around for One Piece DVDs. Ugh.
Shits been going on for 2 years now. Only managed to get one set this whole time.
-
OI DO NOT INSULT DIGIMON! >=O SEASONS 1 and 3 were great! They did about 250 episodes of Digimon in English I think idk I never saw season 5 and didn't like season 4….but they did dub seasons 1 - 5 and each season is a little over 50 episodes.

They're so much cheaper online. Why not just get them online?

I agree. I loeved season three.
-
Look, they're most likely re-releasing seasons 1 - 3 in bigger box sets to bide their time while they dub further ahead seasons 4+
Think back to how long the Saiyan / Namek / Ginyu / Freeza sagas were repeated on Toonami over and over and over while we waited for the Trunks / Android / Cell sagas to play on tv.
This is the same situation. They hit the end of the 205 episodes they dubbed…now instead of doing it piecemeal they're going to dub a huge chunk of episodes again. To do that they need some time and a good way to keep the dub alive and pick up sales from those who didn't buy the 13 episode box sets (like myself; I only bought season 1 but would def. consider seasons 2 and 3 for 26 episode sets at that price (probably could get good deals at walmart / amazon / bestbuy and find them even cheaper) would be to release bigger collection sets w/ more episodes at the same price. Makes perfect sense and shouldn't be a source of worry. Maybe they'll even get around to dubbing Strong World and HOPEFULLY Unlimited Cruise SP for the 3DS.
-
Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure it's only up to Bandai is they wanna let FUNi dub a new game.

Enough said. Lets all stop worrying.

I hear more complaining about the complaining than actual complaining.

Funny thing, same thing happened with the VIZ thread.

Is there? Or is there more complaining about complaining about the complaining?

this thread, you guiz
this thread
-
@Badass:
Is there? Or is there more complaining about complaining about the complaining?
No, that would be what I just did, but besides that one remark, there wasn't much of that. So…
-
My problem with this thread is the amount of twisting good news around into bad news. We've seen more positive things than negative things and yet all of these positive things that are better signs then not and it's really, really annoying.
We're told to be patient. Okay, that means they have something planned, and the chances of it being a formal announcement that they are dropping the series is slim to none. The "worst case" scenario is they go the Case Closed route and grab up some of the movies - this isn't ideal, but who doesn't want at least ONE of the movies? And yet now people have it stuck in their heads that Funimation's big announcement is they're going to formally announce they are dropping the series, which is something I have NEVER seen them do - it's always an informal answer (like in interviews as a response to a fan question or responses to comments on the blog). Even if it comes up at an industry panel it's during the Q&A.
If Funimation came out and actually SAID SOMETHING like "we're dropping the series" or "we've fired Colleen Clinkenbeard and replaced her with Gilbert Godfried" then we would have a reason to complain. Instead we have people who are not only seeing the glass half empty but it's like they are expecting someone to splash it in their face. We have a preview of episode 206, we have screenshots from 206 on S3V5, we have a message from the head of marketing to be patient, and Funimation is dodging questions about the future of the series instead of answering them like they would if it was going to be dropped - plus we're at the start of convention season so there are MANY chances coming up that we could hear something.
-
The problem is that the perception of the situation is utterly relative. Nobody on this forum have any real grasp of the business climate or attitude towards the franchise over at Funimation, but yet people keep piping in with "didn't they say the series is doing well in an interview?", yet they never cite the interview. Other people draw conclusions from the lack of info available and determine that the situation is dire, and then the optimistic people criticize them. The problem is, we just don't know what the expectations are from Funi or Toei, and whether or not the DVDs are meeting them enough to warrant spending more time/money on dubbing more episodes.
The fact that there are those in this forum condemning people who aren't naively optimistic yet cite no subtantial evidence for why those people are foolhardy are starting to rub me the wrong way.
To reiterate: we don't know anything, there's no way to know if they're happy with the DVD sales numbers, and there is just no changing that until an actual interview with someone in-the-know pops up confirming more dub work or a drop of the series. There is absolutely no reason to believe, at this point, that things are doomed or confirmed to continue.
People need to quit making crap up and not backing it up with links. >:[

Here you go. Towards the end Lance says "One Piece" is doing fine but he that they'd like it to be "Naruto"-sized and have a T.V. deal. Keep in mind this was back a while ago so things may have changed since then.
-
Well, that's at least helpful. It wasn't that long ago (a little over a year), so it's good to hear that 2 years into dubbing it, they didn't view the series as a costly business obligation (if that isn't just public posturing). It's possible that the releases since then have dropped off more and more. I'm sure we won't hear anything official until well after the sales window for S3V5. I really wish there was more transparency in this sub-industry, much like Hollywood, with publicly known budgets and returns. Just hearing "it's doing well" comes off as PR spin more often than not.
-
Wasn't this listed as 'Collection 1', and not 'Collection One' the other day?

Does it matter? Wonder why though.

Yes.
I wonder why they made such a small change.

Oh, by the way.
Amazon has a sale for "up to 71 % off Hit Anime" with a list of DVDs of said Hit Anime's eligible for the sale.
One Piece is one of those "Hit Animes", grouped with DBZ Kai Blu-Rays, Hetalia Box Sets, FMA:Brotherhood, FMA, Claymore, Eden of the East, and more.
^That's where the ad redirects you. And if anyone thinks I'm a liar liar pants on fire, then I'll tell you where I saw the ad- on the One Piece Collection One Page here:
-
It's too bad it's only the last DVD that got released.

Notice how this was back before season 3 even came out, not trying to be optimistic at all. But we have no idea how the sells were for the latest season which should be what counts right?

Yeah it all counts. Overall we don't know what the sales expectations were for "One Piece".

Sadly a large portion of the fanbase dismisses Skypiea as filler, so I wouldn't be surprised if sales dipped a bit. Though enough to go from "it's doing well" to "let's cancel this shit"? No.

Why is it counted as filler?
….
...........
Oh. But it is still a great separate arc to get fans in my opinion.
-
Having a large portion of the fanbase treat one of the most important arcs in one piece as filler just goes to show that a large portion of the fanbase are about as smart as a toaster.
Not even to mention it's the best arc in one piece.
-
yah, it's got smexy voice J. Michael Tatum in it
I mean Eneru
I mean shirtless Luffy
… dear, fuck, there goes all of my credibility!
ummm!
SHIRTLESS BLACKBEARD
phew
-
Sorta off topic, but I just wanted to share this, it's sort of a "what if OP made it to Water 7, Enies lobby on TV" sort of thing:
Really well made, though not by me.
-
I almost forgot about NeoToonami. Still waiting for the launch.

Yeah. I really hate when I hear how people just skipped Skypiea as they watch through One Piece.

I'm not even going to argue with this terrible remark. Have you read Water 7? Or even Alabasta?
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
It isn't filler and it shouldn't be skipped, but it certainly wasn't one of the best arcs. It did drag on a bit though, the manga AND anime. I'm not a big Skypeia fan.
-
I'm not even going to argue with this terrible remark. Have you read Water 7? Or even Alabasta?
Nope. Skypeia is the only arc I've seen. Did something good happen in those?
-

Not really. They fought some grunts in black suits with no personality. Also Usopp kicked Luffy's ass, then kicked half the baddies' ass and then Luffy begged for forgiveness. Best parts of the arc tbh.

Oh. Glad I didn't bother with it then, doesn't sound anywhere near as good as shirtless blackbeard.
-
Well in defense of Skypiea and why it's one of my favorite arcs in the series… it's largely self contained. Unlike Water 7 or the Marineford you have to have a good understanding of many events that precede it in the series. Once you hang out in Jaya and fly to Skypeia, not much else is relevant to that one particular story... which is why I guess many fans compare it to being a "filler" arc. That, and there are no crewmembers joining or leaving. But with Luffy's introduction to BB, revelations of the world powers, following Roger's footsteps, more Poneyglyphs, and the furthest reaching flashback yet in the series, it always held hints to how it all fits into the larger picture of the series.
So far I think the biggest contribution to the series will be the appearance of Space Piracy and a hint that at least one group from the One Piece world has interstellar origins. Plus it's a very anti-religious arc, which is great. And the entire arc is worth it just to see the look on Enel's face when he discover's rubber.
-
Nope. Skypeia is the only arc I've seen. Did something good happen in those?
Nah. Just some whiny desert chick and Robin being all depressed and emo.
They were completely forgettable. -
why do people even bother to mention Water 7 at all?
-
Skypiea's my least favorite major arc, but I don't dislike it.
However I enjoyed it a lot more in the recent dub, mostly due to Tatum. Still, it dragged quite a bit in the middle, the fight against Satori (the lowest point in the arc) went on way longer than it had any right to, and every single character that had a noble sacrifice/death just got better at the end (especially Wiper who should've been dead ten times over) and pretty much cemented the 'no one dies in One Piece' rule after Pell initiated it, until it was recently broken.
Also, Tatum's performance aside, I just think Eneru's the most boring villain. I have a different opinion now that I've seen the dub, but back when I only saw the sub I just thought he was kind of dull. He was pretty much every JRPG villain ever (he is/wants to be GOD and wants to find the PROMISED LAND and blah de blah de blah) with a side of DBZ energy blasts (so much of his lightning didn't work anything like lightning, but there's absolutely no point in dwelling on that since most of the DF properties fall apart under too close scrutiny), he was just uninteresting. He was almost like a villain some kid made for a fanfic, an incredibly lame fusion of Sephiroth and Vegeta.
The aftermath and Eneru's cover story were far more interesting, and I'm anticipating his return to the series someday. The dub did quite a bit to help Skypeia, but it's still my least favorite arc. But I can appreciate how other people dig it, the setting was really nice and featured some world building that we're still feeling this late into the story, the Shandorians (while stubborn and unlikable at first) were tied up with the start of the arc by the end nicely, and, well, it had the Eneru face.
-
I bought a deck of One Piece playing cards today at my local Boarders, and it is from FUNimation since it has their logo on it. But when I opened them in my car to take peek, they were the Straw Hats in their Water Seven outfits, I don't know if this means anything to anybody, I was sure surprised to take a gander at the ace and see Sogeking on there (which they should have put Ace on the ace card, duh) just thought I'd share.
@ARC-1300:oh yeah, remembered i need to get that. any mention of the 5th and final part?
I was right it comes out in July. The 26th to be precise.
-
Most likely its the same stock images of Water 7 they put on notebooks, rulers, and book marks 2 years ago.
-
I wish to God that NeoToonami can somehow promote One Piece in some way. Like stream it maybe. Toonami was how One Piece became popular in the first place.
-
How long did Toonami and 4kids aired One Piece?
-
I only know that Toonami aired it since 2005. But the 4Kids dub of it wasn't popular on 4KidsTV, it was on Toonami. That's why Toonami got the last episodes of the Alabasta arc.
