@Thousand:
What happened to "till the end of the series"?:/
He's got leeway till the end of the series now. Its no longer a complaint I can put against him. But if the series runs for another 20 years, and we get more Pell/all of skypeia/Franky Family/Hachi/Bon Kurei incidents, that tension and suspension of disbelief is going to naturally start fading again if the survival rate stays at 100% regardless, same way it did this time around after a couple hundred chapters of fake outs.
One big on camera death proves a point, and a deliberate-ness to all that came before, goes a long way and covers a lot of bases, and the tension will be there from now. Everything before now we can excuse as "it was all waiting to give THIS moment more impact."
But given as long as OP could still end up being? Depending on how Oda handles things, and how many times he fakes us out, I don't know that the tension will last. It should hold for a good long time though.
Its impossible to judge right now, what just happened hasn't sunk in yet or carried over to any future adventures yet. The tone that follows and the danger still to come, the bigger implications, who can know? But he has a complaint-free pass about the death thing for a good long while at least. Particularly since it was so fast and unexpected and contrary to what Oda normally does. (We were all expecting Whitebeard, this came out of nowhere.) Just sort of depends how long the series runs and how often he pulls the fake out trick.
