Woot- I started the Disney topic! :D Huzzah! So to get the discussion started, here's some of Disney's latest ventures:

Chicken Little
Bambi 2 (Bambi and the Great Prince)
Amercian dog
Rapunzel:Unbraided
Lilo and Stitch 2: Stitch has a Glitch
Kronk's New Groove (including a new tv series The Emperor's New Skool)
And lastly,
Toy Story 3-rumoured to be about what would happen when Andy grows up and the toy's end up in the best place for them, somehere they will be loved and played with - a pre school nursery. If this is made, it will be done without Pixar and possibly without Tom Hanks (voice of Woody).

And a bunch I couldn't find sites for (at the moment anyway …not that it really matters, they're all direct to video):

Honestly, the only things I am looking forward to on the above list are Chicken Little, and anything to do with Emperor's New Groove is okay by me.

Goliath Chronicles? I didn't know about any of that. I liked the Gargoyles series, what was wrong with it?

After the last of the "regular" Gargoyles episodes ('Hunter's Moon part III'), they did an "additional season" of episodes set after that as Saturday morning fare. These were subtitled 'The Goliath Chronicles'. The original guy behind the series wasn't really involved, the new plots were far weaker, and a lot of the depth evaporated. It died mercifully.

Walt Disney has been spinning in his grave for years…I'm surprised China hasnt found em' yet. Anyway the best disney sequel EVER was Rescuers Down under....bar none the best! It even was released in theaters.

True! However Pixar refused to renew it's contract with Disney last year, and Disney owns the rights to Toy Story, Monster's Inc, The Incredibles, etc. So unless it gets renewed, all sequels will be…....._

but lo and behold, there may be hope yet for Gargoyles! Supposedly disney releases the second season on DVD and it does well, which it probably will since the first season DVD went spectacular (got a copy myself), they're going to start up the series again. Also, there's going to be a comic coming out some time in the near future. I don't really have any detailed info about it with the exception that grieg wiesman will be writing it, and he'll be the ONLY writer.

As for everything else from disney…well...they can bite my ass for raping my childhood and destroying my realtives' with their shitty sequals. I'm hoping that their own Computer Animation department will be good considering it's my major, but i've got low standards, and there is still a multitude of other avenues i can go down, like gaming, or special effects, or working for other computer animation studios.

Actually now that i think of it, there was one great sequal other than Rescuers Down Under: Fantasia 2000! It was truly amazing and wonderful.

I knew Disney likes to make straight to video DVDs but damn!!!! I wonder when they'll get to, oh I don't know, making original cartoons!!!!

Ironically, I'll look at Toy Story 3, when it comes to home video. otherwise I'm going to read every review so I won't lose $6.50 on it.

All this Disney talk got me thinking about how they're indirectly responsible for One Piece and how it is shown on American TV. Also how similar Disney and 4kidsTV are.

Disney is far FAR worse than 4kids could ever hope to be. Al Kahn's edits may be irritating, but Micheal Eisner truly is a scumbag.

Yeah you're right. Its sad, I use to like Eisner during Disney's heyday.

and he certainly didn't want them to do all these sequals. He was completely against doing sequals to anything he filmed. As far as i know, there has only been one sequal that Walt agreed to and that was done way back in the thirties or forties and he really regretted it.

I'm amazed Season 1 did well, cos they did ZERO advertising for it. Usually, Disney advertises when someone sneezes on a stack of DVD-Rs and calls it a new movie.

Perhaps it will play well in 2005. The anime invasion has shown there's room for a series with recurrent characters and long plots.

Lilo and Stitch 3's the only one I'm interested in there. Disney have really been going downhill.

Keep a look out for Jungle Book 3-Mowgli takes on Freddy Krueger at your local retailers anytime soon.

However…Kingdom Hearts is still hopeful for Disney, what with having the characters and what have you.

No, Disney closed down it's 2d animation department except for the studios that make the direct to video sequels. ^^ It was quite a shock when it happened…. the 200+ 2d animation artists were rather suprised about it too.

Shocking, isn't it? When I first heard I was so angry I could chew nails. I'm still peeved, but there's not much I can do right now.

Disney will regret it's choice. They relied solely on Pixar for their CGI movies, and now they've gone and lost it. How will they fare on their own? The future is bleak, despite how cute Chicken Little looks.

And this is a prime example of how I'm starting to really hate CGI movies. The high-tech, "real" looking animation is fine and all, but hand-drawn cel animation is an art that should NOT be lost. There's a lot more charm in hand-drawn stuff, and even if a movie has spiffy CGI it can't survive without a good storyline. I mean, look at Shark Tale. The animation was fine, but the story lacked and thus it wasn't a big hit. Shrek would have been just as good as a cel-animation movie because the story and writing was so awesome.

Oh, and Caracal? Don't jinx it! If they dare touch Robin Hood I WILL HAVE BLOOD!!

Unfortunately CGI movies are the biggest things right now. Every one of them has made money and are cheaper to make. Because of this, the 2-D genre is most likely dead and if the CGI craze finally dies, I fear there will be no more theartrical animation.

CGI is best used as an enhancement, like the castle in Howl's Moving Castle.

That is seriously true. I really don't have much of an opinion on Disney, but CGI is being used to death. Like Satsuki said, it's better as an enhancment. I get the feeling that soon, Walt himself will come back from the dead, and raise hell on Eisner for the travesties he's brought.

And stop with the sequels already! Just because those classics were good doesn't mean you have to do crappy, direct-to-DVD sequels that you think will have the same impact as the original. I heard about the 2D studio being closed down,and that made me very sad. As cool as 3D animated movies can be, my heart has been, and always will be with 2D. They're looking at the profits - the 3D movies are making more money, so they get rid of the 2D, not paying attention to the fact that the real reason why the recent 2D movies haven't been doing as well is because they're so cliche, formulated, and poorly imagined. Pixar movies are awesome because they have great stories and great characters. Disney is constantly trying to capitalize on previous successes rather than attempting to try something new. That's why they keep making crappy sequels to every damn movie they've ever made. It's like they're trying so hard to find that old magic again.
I've noticed a big explosion of 3D animated movies coming from every corner of Hollywood lately. It'll be interesting to see what happens if the market becomes so saturated with 3D animation that it loses it's novelty, and people start looking into 2D again.

CG isn't really something meant to replace traditional animation. It's merely a new medium, and neither are going to go away. It's just like saying photoshop and painter are replacing canvas and paint. It won't happen.

I really see CGI long term as more a threat to traditional acting. Why spend money on a stunt actor if you can build a plausible 3D model of your star, and just throw the digitally rendered version of him off of the moving train at 140 kph? And once you get there, why bother with the star himself? Why not just render the person you want in all details (nip here, tuck there, tattoo here), and just rely on voice actors (one place computers still fail miserably).

I think 3D tends to encourage certain expectations that are more traditional film like than with 2D. Notably, the camera can go anywhere and do anything with little additional effort. Just walking the camera down the street is expensive with 2D animation, but free on 3D.

When you have limits, it also gives licences for stylization you may not get. A 3D rendered scene doesn't need the angry people with hashmarks on their forehead, the face models can be tweaked to show the anger.

I agree with what Berry says, CGI is a threat to traditional acting.

I personally think a mix of CGI and traditional acting would do best, because you get the cool animated effects and stuff, and the actors that you know and love.
If you boot the traditional acting, people are going to get bored, and stop watching.

So I think movies should go on how they are today.
