How long is it gonna be until Disney tries another stab at a 2D animated movie, maybe not right now because of Covid and all but I could seriously see a huge interest in Disney doing another one, You'd get a lot of adults along with kids too, because people love to be nostalgic about things and the 2D animated movies were a big part of looooooots of people's child hoods

I know it takes a lot more time and a lot more money to make 2D and it might not work for another studio but I feel like if Disney came out with a marketing campaign "that 2D animated Disney movies are back baby!!" it would set the internet ablaze

It's probably gonna be a good long while, if they ever do it again. For now 3D is pretty much the standard and it's overall cheaper and easier to make, so there's no reason for them to mess with a good thing (financially speaking). And casual audiences seem to perfectly okay with it.

Someone, be it Disney or some other studio, is really gonna have to do something big to break the mold if 2D is ever going to be viable for theatrical films again.

Somebody somewhere will have to spark a massive re-interest in 2D animation before Disney will go for it.

In the meantime they keep their 2D studio alive with tv/streaming series and shorts.

They're not. I'm sure they'll eventually take a stab at it because someone has a passion… but it'll probably be 3D run through a 2D filter like Paperman was. CG is just faster and cheaper and easier to keep everything on model while getting crazier colors.

They'd basically have to fund and set up a whole new studio to bring back a 2D department at this point, and there's very little fully trained 2D talent anymore.

Yeah there's a lot of 2D tv animation but that's a whole different thing.

We still have foreign studios regularly doing 2D and none of that is striking big despite the quality. If Ghibli films and Hosoda and SHinkai and Carton Saloon and Laika (with stop motion) aren't making waves, then no Disney film is going to make that mark either.

Apparently the artists for Encanto had to really fight Disney to let Luisa have big muscles….because we can't pretend Disney isn't superficial and misogynistic.

Anyway. Jokes on them because little girls have GRAVITATED to this buff AF character and they were not prepared for the amount of demand for Luisa merch.

They made a bunch of Isabella merch that isn't selling well because they thought kids would like the classically beautiful character the most. They were wrong. Turns out the kids want giant muscle lady.

Shame Dos Oruguitas was the Psxar nominated song. It’s pretty in context of the film, but other songs have caught on like wildfire in ways I bet they weren’t expecting. I didn’t think the songs were that catchy upon first viewing, but have since changed my mind and am still listening to a lot of them on loop.

Side tangent, Lin Manuel went whole hog this year. This, Vivo, In the Heights, and Tick Tick Boom which I really loved. He’s definitely working Non-Stop.

While its true we're getting a lot of Lin product last year, a lot of that is a result of covid delays.

Animation is a long process. Vivo and Encanto he did the work on years ago, (Production on both started in 2016, not sure if Lin did one then the other or if he juggled over the years) in he's just done the press when they came out. In the Heights he made before Hamilton and the movie version was filmed pre-Pandemic and was supposed to come out in 2020. . And TTB is someone else's existing show, he just directed the film. Not to downplay how hard directing is, but its not a case where he did all the music like the other three.

Absolutely busy, absolutely productive, but it's really more like the work of the last three or four years, even though all the stuff came out close together… because reasons.

The animators say that she has the biggest biceps in the whole Disney Animated Canon.

Aside from her awesomeness as Big Muscle Lady, I can think one reason kids gravitated to her is that for 80% of the movie Isabella is the mean big sister, but Luisa is always kind to her little sister.

I have yet to watch Encanto, as theatres were shuttered here until a few weeks ago, and also I have no Disney +.

I plan on doing write ups on the one where Donald unleashes the 7 deadly sins, the one where Scrooge tries comitting major tax fraud, and maybe the one thats straight Fahrenheit 451

So apparently for the Oscar they DIDN'T submit "We Don't Talk About Bruno" or even the opening introductory number or the earworm of Luisa's song… they submitted the all spanish song that basically plays as background instrumental that literally no one mentions out of any of the movie's 8 songs..

I get it, on paper that's the sort of thoughtful artsy thing the academy goes for and its the one they were talking up before the movie came out, but wow did the people in charge of marketing drop the ball on basically everything about this films in terms of what was going to actually click with audiences.

It's probably going to get best animated picture regardless, since Belle didn't make the list and Raya is pretty weak, Mitchells is too weird, and Luca got robbed of feeling like an actual theatrical release, but still.

The Mitchells deserve more for being a more free and innovative movie, but it's the Academy and they have an long love story with Disney.

Well, Amphibia ENDS in these next 11 episodes. The Owl house still has 3 40min specials.
Matt planned a 3 act story.
But Dana was cut short in S1, because some suit thought the series didn't fit the "Disney Brand".

It sucks because no matter how much plausible deniability that statement holds,
we can pretty much assume it was almost entirely because of the LGBT content.
Reminds me of how Cartoon Network forced Steven Universe into a rushed ending due to the Garnet wedding.

Any "Disney Brand" reasons you could level at Owl House could just as easily be applied to Gravity Falls,
which was treated as a Disney darling.
From Echanting Grom Fright onwards, I'm convinced there was an "oh no, prepare to shut it down" murmur picking up momentum in the boardroom.

Checking in about encanto, I find it hilarious that the thing of “Mirabel no, Maribel” was a thing, when I’m sure everyone in latam knows a yubiri bitzaida, a Kysbel and a belkis who are parents, a horde of josmar and any permutation of that, and the famous yusnavi (u s navy).

If they wanted to keep the theme they should have made her second name Milagro, Mirabel Milagro Madrigal Montero (assuming a common M last name for the dad) and the grandma calling her that in the low tension but stressful moments would have been very authentic.

"The show that defined a generation" is a nice way of saying furries were really into it.

As bizarre as this looks, you know what, can't say I've seen a movie where an animated duo squabble because one got CGI surgery. I can't think of any mainstream movie that makes fun of those mid/late -2000s CGIfests like Polar Express or Beowulf. I've complained about so many movies and show being rehashes of old ideas, not old properties, but old ideas. So I feel, on principle, I shouldn't condemn something with at least two clever ideas, one of which really works with the metaness. I know there's probably a whole lot of tired cliches here the trailer isn't showing, but two clever ideas is enough to make me the most cautiously of cautiously optimistic.

Who'd they get My Little Pony? Yeah, I know Disney could just fork over the money for licensing, but I'm so used to companies pinching every penny they can.

It was dumb when Space Jam did it, buts its worse here. At least SJ converted them all at once.

Except its not even ACTUALLY 2D animated, its CG with a 2D render that always looks bad and not hand drawn so what's even the point?

Also their voices not being pitched up feels really wrong too.

It was fine with the first Wreck It Ralph because they didn't concentrate the whole movie on it (I think they only showed up in the first third). This however . . .

And I certainly don't like MLP showing up there. It looks like they're trying to make it a Roger Rabbit-esque world except with none of the charm of the real Roger Rabbit world.

What you talking about the show had a genuine hart. I can't say the show was perfect but I also can't say for myself that I find any episode straight up bad.

Show ran for 3 seasons and got over 65 episodes, more than enough for syndication. That's a great run for any animated show.

Yeah its not the monster 100+ episode runs shows got in the 80's and early 90's but those days are far behind us aside from "adult comedies". Aside from your Southparks/Family Guy/Bob's Buger/Archer/Robot Chicken scenarios, I can't think of too any kids animated show went more than 3 seasons and passed the 70 episode mark, especially from Disney..

Kim Possible? Phineas and Ferb? Mickey Mouse Clubhouse? Star Wars Clone Wars?

If you look outside Disney you get what? Jackie Chan Adventures? Adventure Time, Regular Show, Gumball, Steven Universe, Teen Titans Go? (Those are all squishier given they're 11 minute episodes which makes it a little harder to judge) If you go to franchises you can add Ben 10, Avatar, Transformers, TMNT, MLP?

Yeah there's occasional mega hits that run for a solid decade but passing 65 episodes is really really rare for animated shows nowadays. 3 seasons and 65 episodes is solid, and still better than most.

After mulling this over a bit I think I'm…tentatively optimistic?

Like, I'm sick of the perpetual nostalgia-pandering IP necromancy we're living through. I absolutely do not think a Rescue Rangers Reboot should exist and it makes me groan a bit to see oldschool ductales and Aladdin TAS references, even as someone who LOVED the Disney Afternoon. So making a movie that totally agrees that rebooting Rescue Rangers is absurd, and spins it off into its own distinct thing that looks to be partially lampooning the whole concept? That might be somethiing. I'll definetely take this over the plastic panderingness of the whole Live Action Remake trend.

Like, literally yesterday I was asked "What movie would you want to have a sequel where everyone is older", and my response was

I don't really care for the super-delayed/Legacy Sequel concept, mostly I wish older IP, or at least the original versions of them could be left to rest. If I had to see one, I'd like to see a more meta comedic one that really skewers the concept, showing the now older characters as woefully out-of-shape in every sense, wanting nothing more than to not be there but forced to jump through the expected motions, enduring attempts to be artificially de-aged ultimately dying decisively and pathetically. Basically, do a 22 Jump street version of the whole trend. Maybe a Lord/Miller style Indiana Jones feature in that mold could be fun, if Harrison Ford is tuned in to the vibes; have Indiana shamble around with an IV drip while everyone treats him as if he's the same hero as in Raiders, gawking at his Iconic Jacket which he tries hawking for cash etc.
But of course it would never be allowed to get made, and fan outcry would be insane. And this Rescue Rangers movie…looks to kinda tap into that? You can argue "Why this property though", but it might be just about the right level of IP fame for a project like this? Like, it being Rescue Rangers underscores the silliness of trying to cash in on a reboot in the first place?
