Oh! Hugo, I remember him~ He was called Juuso in Finnish though. I really liked that movie as a kid! The sequel was great too, if I remember right. The first film was made in 1993 and the sequel in 1996 (I had to check since I clearly remember seeing them when I was like 7, certainly not in 2005 :D).
Speaking of Danish films, there's a bit newer one that I enjoyed watching around the age of ten:
GubF_Aj6A1Y
I rewatched recently, and it was still enjoyable. :)
But if we really start to talk about sweet childhood memories, this movie comes to mind:

Though it can be considered as anime, it's still a big part of my childhood. <3

Oh wow, this seriously looks interesting, I'll have to look into it :>
The animation seriously reminds me of We're Back. Same company maybe? idk
I used to watch this movie all the time when I was a kid, it was awesome then too

I recently discovered this movie: The Sea Prince and the Fire Child. It's pretty much The Little Mermaid meets Romeo & Juliet. The story is little predictable, but still entertaining. Plus, when you've got Koichi Sugiyama: The man behind the Dragon Quest soundtrack, you know the music is going to be great.
And on a comletely different note: I saw The Fantastic Mr. Fox today. I was a huge fan of Rohl Dahal's books as a kid, so I decided to check it out. It's such a breath of fresh air to see stop-motion instead of CGI. I know Coraline was the first one in awhile, but something about how it goes for the vintage look is more appealing. It wasn't exactly the most faithful adaptation, either. That didn't stop me from liking Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, though. Even if it got tiresome at times, replacing swear words with "cuss" was pretty damn funny, too.

Hey, whadda you know. I just read an article about the movie in the NYT. So is it really that good as they say?
"The Secret of Kells", eh? Googles, and Youtube's
WELL, color me intrigued! Even nominated for an Oscar this weekend…I wonder if it wins, we'll see a wider release?
And to think the creator's of Skunk Fu made this...
Definitely going to see that.
The "Best Animated Feature" Oscar category this year is really great, not only because the movies are great, but because I'm really not sure who's going to win. Pixar is always the perennial favorite, but there's some really strong competition this year. And Up is also in the Best Picture category, so they might give the Animated Feature award to someone else. I'm going to watch the Oscars solely for that.

It'll be Up if for no other reason than to annoy me. I hope I'm wrong though.

definitely one of the most gorgeous animated films i've ever seen.
good
beautiful style, backgrounds, music
bad
i'm kind of loathe to say anything bad about this film. it reminds me of the foreign toons i grew up on (king arthur & square knights, The Little Fox, etc) so i pretty much loved everything about it. sometimes the animation is a little choppy, and the story is a bit rough
tldr i would have eaten this up as a kid
Well, Up won. Oh well.
Although I think it's kind of fantastic that we have a year where I can say "oh well" to a Pixar win instead of "Yeah! Pixar won!" That just means the competition was that good.

This could be really awesome.
Really, really awesome.
Finally picked up and watched Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs.
Pretty awesome film all around. not quite as good as UP but very much nearing there. I'd advise everyone to pick it up at some point and watch it.
HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON.
Anyone else interested in seeing this? I've been excited since I first found out about it, based on nothing more than the fact that Chris Sanders (Lilo and Stitch, Mulan) is involved.
I was kind of surprised to realize it comes out… Friday... and I haven't seen a single commercial for it yet.

Crap, you're making me want to see this. Nobody would want to watch this with me. Yesterday, I managed to get my sister and mother to watch 'Where the Wild Things Are' with me, and they hated it. I didn't love it to death, but it was okay.
If I point this out, I'll never hear the end of it.

Really? Maybe it's because I've been to the theaters like crazy lately (Princess and the Frog twice, Alice in Wonderland, the Crazies), but I've seen endless previews for the movie, and quite a few commericials.
I saw a trailer for it around a year ago, and then nothing until two weeks ago when I watched Ponyo.

wow lol, yesterday I was talking to my friend about how we see this trailer in every movie we watch.
Will probably check it out.
I've seen tons of previews and commercials for How to Train Your Dragon as well. I'll go see it, I can't resist dragons.

Well, as I've said before on the matter, movies about dragons have a tendency to…well...suck (Dragonheart, Eragon, Reign of Fire, etc.) But who knows? Maybe Dreamworks (of all people) will be the ones to break the cycle.
Anyway, I too am surprised to hear it's coming out this Friday. I haven't really seen any previews for it recently, but then again I almost never watch TV.

i didn't know nicolas marlet (kungfu panda) was working on this movie till the other day
this means i now have to buy the artbook when it comes out

A classic!
The early reviews out for How to Train Your Dragon are VERY good. And I'm definitely interested in seeing it.
I think dragon movies are better when animated, it's when they do live action that they tend to suck.
Non-sequitor!
The Secret of Kells finally appeared in my area! It's only playing in the city, but I'll take a trip in, no question.

Flight of Dragons is a weird film; it's based on "The Dragon and the George" by Gordon Dickson, but is named for another book entirely that is a natural history book about dragons like, say, Gnomes by Huygen and Poortvliet (which itself inspired David the Gnome). Did Rankin-Bass license Flight of Dragons because realizing that there wasn't any actual story to build a movie around?
Anyway, I don't know if I'd call it a good film though James Earl Jones is awesome in it.

It is a simple but good film.
I think the most magnetic part about it now is it's so austerely exotic compared to cartoons now. Even looking at the Disney classics, they don't nearly seem as rustically old as TFoD.
Dragon's Lair and Space Ace give off the same feel. By today's standards the settings and level of development in those animations (yes I know they're games) would be dubbed 'generic', but looking at them from this era they've got a certain ambiance that feels more fantastical than more modern works.
the manliest of cartoons
10/10 (but it's a dreamworks 10/10, as in compared to their other films. I guess compared to other studios like pixar, it'd be a 9/10 maybe. pixar tends to make their movies so that everything ties up and fits into a neat little box, but this movie doesn't feel like that. it's great, but parts of it stick out a little, lol. i guess what i mean is that it's not evenly awesome, but it's a great cartoon anyway)
uuhuuhuhmmmhmh non spoilery review is that basically there wasn't anything that made me cringe or facepalm, and any "bad" parts about it is that the main character's voice is utterly monotone throughout the whole flick or his dad's eyes always seem to be the exact same distance from each other and never really change (possible model error??)
basically i think the voice actors could have been better all around, like in Kung Fu Panda (SANS JACK BLECH), except for the twins and maybe astrid and the peg leg viking
spoilers
! big dragon made for a kick ass final battle. definitely got the same chills as when i sat through LOTR for the first time with the Balroq
! chris sanders + nicolas marlet make for a killer creature feature of both cute, scary, and outlandish
! i loved the flight scenes (BETTER THAN AVATAR AVATAR AVATRART AVARET)
! >! holy shit he lost a leg!!!!!
tldr i wouldn't be entirely nauseated if i heard they wanted to make a sequel
. it's great, but parts of it stick out a little, lol. i guess what i mean is that it's not evenly awesome, but it's a great cartoon anyway)
Pretty much the way I feel as well. There were some very small touches here and there that really impressed me; in particular, there's a bit towards the end where flakes of ash are flying around in one of the most impressive 3D effects I've ever seen.
his dad's eyes always seem to be the exact same distance from each other and never really change (possible model error??)
Possible since the film was made in a hurry. If anything, the animation has no business being this good with a twelve month production schedule.
peg leg viking
Craig Ferguson did a fairly good job with that character.
Just saw this movie.
If you like vikings, and dragons, and character development with an ending that really humanizes the hero GO SEE THIS FILM!
Preferably in 3D. Some real beautiful stuff in 3D.
And even though the story is a mash of "A Boy and His [Insert Animal Here]" and "Coming of Age," the movie has fun with it and throws in a couple of surprises to keep you going. Oh, and you actually care about the hero and his dragon. Yay!
A couple of clichés may get you down, but it won't sink the movie.

jaw drop No fucking way! Did these people even eat or sleep as they were making this?
They probably just threw out a lot of the fine-tuning that usually goes into this sort of film. Just having the script completely worked out in advance would speed things up considerably as they wouldn't have to go back and do a scene over again. For example, The Simpsons Movie was constantly being altered throughout the entire production schedule and there were even fairly sizable parts of the film being changed only a few months before it was released.
How to Train Your Dragon is probably the 3D animation equivalent of a Roger Corman movie; not by having a small budget (though it was cheaper than Monsters vs. Aliens and about the same as Madagascar 2), but because they probably just animated a scene and went on without tinkering with it while another production might opt to go back and reanimate the scene to remove a small flaw or improve it somehow. Unless it was a truly crippling mistake, they probably just left a lot of stuff in that might have led to a scene being redone under normal circumstances. taboo mentioned a possible model error with Stoick's eyes; there might be other things along that line that may not stand out so much unless you have a chance to pause the scene and examine it closely.
Though, if they managed to avoid that sort of thing, then it's an even more impressive accomplishment.
I finally saw The Secret of Kells! (hooray for art house theaters!)
It was SOOOOOOO good. Seriously, screw Avatar, THIS is the kind of visual wonder that I respond to the best. And I like how that, despite being centered around a religious text, they refrain from becoming preachy and instead just let the wonder of illustration and knowledge itself be the message.
Spoilers:
! Aside from an awesome soundtrack, and an art style that doesn't need anything more said about it's greatness, I really liked the subtle ways this movie pulls you in. The relationship between the Abbot and Brendan was great, it was simple yet deep. Kinda like the whole movie.
! I also loved the clever way in which Brendan was able to defeat Crom Cruagh (sp?), and that they DIDN'T defeat the Vikings, they focused on preserving the book and the knowledge. Which makes sense, there would have been no way for Brendan or any of them to defeat the Vikings without some stupid Deus ex Machina, so they didn't. They just protected what was important.
! I need to get this movie on DVD NOW.
Parents who care about their children should take them to see this movie. Like they should see Wall*E (or anything Pixar, really), and anything else that isn't full of juvenile humor or CGI chipmunks.

i love you, Blue Sky

i love you, Blue Sky
Wow, the animation in that is fantastic!
Just looking at Blue (the bird that's afraid to fly, I think they said Blue was his name) and his rapid facial expressions is making me think of the amazing effort that is placed in some of the best drawn and animated cartoons. Just look at how is eyes and neck move with actual fluidity.
I'll definately give it a view.
Well, I'm just glad to see Blue Sky making something that isn't Ice Age.
Anywho, any of you guys see this?
LoaADvpxwJQ
Eh, I guess it could go either way. Also I guess this is what Newt could've been like if Pixar had gone through with it.
The animation, especially the wolves themselves, look so stiff and "key-frame-y". I'll pass.
Huh. Well, i'm usually a sucker for wolves, but… that doesn't look too wonderful.
Rio, on the other hand, looks awesome.
Glances at user icon
Glances at Alpha and Omega trailer
How the hell am I NOT excited about this? I love wolves!
Oh. Right. The designs look terrible, the animation bad, and the story cookie cutter. Though at least maybe we now have a reason on why Newt was scrapped. And the Duran Duran is about the most obvious song choice they could have picked. And not in a good way. (And I love the song. But… meh.) AND Born to be Wild? Well, I guess thats the gammut of incredibly obvious song choices for the trailer. I think its jarring because their faces look like they're made out of smooth clay, while the rest of their bodies have fur texture. It looks wierd.
"They have nothing in common, but together, they just might find everything they need!"
The thing with the birds looks pretty good though. Blue Sky is great at the Roadrunner-esque comedy, Scrat was always the strongest part of the Ice Age movies, and that animation looks great and full of character. And the actual animation and designs look pretty tight. That one I have interest in.
I've never really been interested in the movies Blue Sky's done. I tried giving Ice Age a chance, but I just found the characters to be really annoying, and the story never did it for me. I think they were the ones who did that Horton Hears a Who movie a few years ago, too. I saw bits and pieces of it on a flight, and it suffered from a lot of problems involved in expanding a short, Dr. Seuss book into a 75 minute movie.
Rio, on the other hand, might actually be worth seeing, though. And that's saying something, since I normally can't stand any CGI movies outside of Pixar, and a select few Dreamworks films.
Fun fact: Alpha and Omega is being made by Crest Animation Studios who have previously worked on The Swan Princess and The King and I. So yeah, pretty bad track record.
Anyway, my take on the Ice Age movies. Ice Age 1 was great, but not on par with Pixar's best. Ice Age 2 was terrible. Ice Age would've been bad, but it was saved by Simon Pegg.
i wasn't really impressed with Ice Age, but it was Robots that really caught my attention on Blue Sky
i couldn't find this clip anywhere, so i had to go dig up the movie and upload it myself

Robots made me laugh pretty hard, to my disbelief. The story itself was kinda meh, but I enjoyed the laughs.
Alpha and Omega, on the other hand . . . . . . yeah, it looks pretty meh. I would trust Pixar with such a setup, but this looks about as cookie-cutter as you can get. And I luuuuuuurve wolves. Oh well. Newt was scrapped for a reason. Now let's just hope they've got better projects on the to do list.
Oh, and your vid is Fox-blocked, taboo.
Alpha and Omega looks worst than some of Dreamworks' bigger stinkers, and not to mention being completely unoriginal. I'd make a joke about how pretty much every other animation studio competing with Pixar creates (And I use this term very loosely in this case) movies with a basic premise of WACKY ANIMAL ANTICS, but it's been done, in funnier ways, I might add. Yeah, definitely sitting this one out.
boooooo

Well, I have to admit I haven't actually seen it, but I got the impression that it was a fairly bad movie.
On the subject of Robots, I only saw it once in theaters and I thought it was pretty good, but not as good as Ice Age. It just seemed kinda ordinary to me. Also, while I loved Amanda Bynes as a kid, she now makes me wretch.

Wow, she turned HOT! Him, not so much. His hair is God awful.
ahem
Just from that brief moment, I don't see anything completely awful. The animation is decent. The music is okay the further it got. And they manage to pull off what many 'Disney princess formula' movies tend to fail at: making the princess and the prince actually have a REAL relationship before their romance.
This might not be a bad movie to watch with my niece.
