This chapter leaves me confused, especially about this crossdresser cult.
It not really seems like a very original idea to me to include flamboyant trannies in a manga (political correctness note; i'm not talking about gay people here, i'm talking about flamboyant trannies).
Sure it's taking a philosophical direction with a "we're all equal n' stuff"-message, appreciated, but still…meh.
The general lack of piracy and the still absent crew didn't really help me there either.
Not that it makes the story less interesting though, i'm still eager to see in what all this will culmulate. So i'll just sit tight and await the things to come.
I'm just getting really antsy to see the really big battle of Impel Down. I can't wait to see who else will take part.
Well, apparently not. still in shock
Thousand, just uh…I guess...not what I was expecting.
So you too remembered Zkaisers sig the second you saw the chapter…
Glad we think alike
This chapter made me feeling a bit unease
Sorry to say it
but for me this chapter is a real shit
The only good thing in it is when Luffy asked Iva to help his friend first
But seeing those shits singing and dancing makes me vomit
Undskuld I cant understand the chapter

Wow, you sound very homophobic. Don't be a hater.
Who would've guessed there was such a large(or maybe just vocal) homophobic community surrounding One Piece.
Once again I'm starting to see the Johnny-come-latelys bitch and moan about chapter pacing. Too many self-entitled asses can't just enjoy the ride.
I can't wait to see the English dub of the OP anime handle this chapter…

Are you sure? At the rate they used to skip complete arcs and islands, they would have been here in the next two months. But unless I'm mistaken, 4Kids no longer has the rights to One Piece in the US. I thought FUNimation took over….
Someone in the know, please inform us the not-informed.
So, who's ready for Luffiko to show up next week? Just remember, you saw her here first.

Yes, FUNimation dubs One Piece now. They release uncut DVDs like every 3 or 4 months.
So, who's ready for Luffiko to show up next week? Just remember, you saw her here first.

If she's half as sexy as your avatar, Luffy Harem has a whole plethora of possibilities now.
I imagine the fan artists/writers are drooling at the prospect.
It could come in handy, since Mr. 2 could turn into the male Luffy and lead the guards on a wild goose chase. They'd probably fall for it, allowing for Luffy to move around more easily.
allowing for Luffy to move around more easily.
This made me realize that he needs a bra now.
She'll probably just have to go with sarashi style bandages.
You heard the order, fan artists. Hop to it.

Im not ready at all.
anyways,I doubt will see luffy until 539..540 or maybe 538 in a small panel or so
I think the next chapter could switch to the Marines. maybe them heading down to Lvl 5(or lvl 6)

Done and Done! .
but, freedom, where's the freedom?

The freedom died in that horrible sequel known as destiny.
Yo got that right.
It came back though, sort of. is currently watching SEED Destiny

Yeah, I heard it did. But I couldn't finish the series when I saw marketing take over the plot.
I like the sarashi style bandages idea. that requires a little more work though :)
Who mentioned Bon-chan becoming male Luffy and distracting the guards? I like this idea. but given how things have gone so far, I'm sure it'll be something more crazy. And when is the riot? it's been on the brink since Buggy started letting prisoners out to run loose and serve as distractions.
@Thousand:
Edit: Ahahahaha, that reminds me, ZKaiser, since you've been using that as a signature for quite some time, do you have any special comments you would like to make?
Not really.
So, who's ready for Luffiko to show up next week? Just remember, you saw her here second.

That looks like Brennen.
I stole him. He now lives in my avatar.
Well, although I would personally like these recovery days to have passed by already and this upcoming chapter to feature a recovered Luffy, I know things might not end up that way and we might not see Luffy for a chapter or two…or three....and if that is how its going to be then I think this is a nice opportunity to show us whats going on with the rest of the crew!
I Miss Them!
What a strange chapter. I'm still in something of a daze.
At the end of the last chapter I expected a huge change in the narrative just…not along these lines.
When Oda gave a countdown at the end of the chapter, that signalled to me something big was coming. Then the chapter started heading out down that very path. We were given a look at all the major players, where they were and why they have good reason to be preoccupied for the next few hours. This is how Oda tends to give us an update on character status before whisking us away to some foreign locale.
Then I flipped the page and was greeted by...a secret okama bar hidden within Impel Down where the beer runs like river and men physically turning into women before our eyes where a penis-chinned man runs the show?
Hmm.
While I am certainly surprised, nay, astounded by the development, I'm not exactly happy that we were given this so soon. I was so sure we'd be given either an update on other characters or a look at how the war front was progressing. Especially since EGX contacted my over the weekend and advised strongly against visiting the forum. I can't say my expectations exceeded the payoff because I was no doubt shocked, but...just in the complete opposite direction.
Not sure I'm crazy about a TRHPS design being in OP. I figured Oda could have gone either the SUPER HOT or SUPER UGLY WTF route and I guess he felt with Hancock and Sadi and shit, he's been using that hand too much recently. He kinda creeps me out. It's like constantly having to look at the first panel Lola's zombie ever appeared in.
Another thing I wasn't crazy about was Oda's choice in how to demonstrate Iva's powers. So the impenetrable ID with all its security and long-ass history can't account for a shitload of prisoners but somehow one guy searching for Ivan finds his way in, WITH A WEAPON, and decides to attack Iva?
Ew.
I know WHY Oda did it. He wanted an excuse to make us go 'WTF?!' and start wild-ass speculation over Iva's abilities but it somewhat cheapens all that Bentham went through for me.
I do love his personality tick for Iva, that's funny as hell and can be pulled off when we least expect it so kudos on that.
But yeah. Wow. Not uh, not what I was expecting ^_^;
OH! Another thing I'm not crazy about. The '2 day' thing about Luffy. That reeks of an excuse. Given the time limit, unless Oda expects Luffy NOT to participate in the war, there's no way that limit will be upheld. Luffy's going to bust out halfway and be like, "FUCK THIS SHIT! I can walk of my own power! I'm getting Ace!", which is something I can predict only BECAUSE he chose to end the chapter on that note. If Iva mentioned it as an afterthought it'd be kinda cool, but not this way.
Unless...he really doesn't expect Luffy to participate in the war! o_O
Was waiting for this comment
Yeah, I was wondering about the guy who attacked Iva. If I were to guess, he was 'spirited away' to okamakai around the same time, quickly grasped the situation and picked up the closest weapon he could find. You have to guess that minor guy would at least be strong enough to earn +100 mil bounty, so you could probably also make the assumption that some lame bazooka isn't his main fighting style, but merely an attack formed from the emotions of the incident. To be brought into such a bizarre scenario and be placed in front of your life's antagonist at the same time could easily cause some shock.
No use overanalyzing, though.
Well, I don't think it's a stretch to assume that the guys in the bar have stole supplies and firearms from the Impel Down staff for their own use.
And I always thought the guy never knew that Ivankov was THE Ivankov Emporio, King of Kamabakka Island. Once he heard the news from Bentham he got infuriated.
I don't want to say that's incorrect, because it's not, but we really shouldn't have to think about that stuff. Oda has given perfectly good reasons or scenarios to display the power of his characters before that didn't require us to become Oda apologists. It felt rushed and almost unecessary. Not gonna say it wasn't awesome/hilarious to see Iva detonate a canonball with a wink, but Oda could have picked a more appropriate path if he wanted to. He just wanted to get it done with and I can't blame the man. He's got a lot of shit on his plate and the last thing he should be doing is dragging the story out.
Still, ew.
edit:
Hold up.
And I always thought the guy never knew that Ivankov was THE Ivankov Emporio, King of Kamabakka Island. Once he heard the news from Bentham he got infuriated.
At first this confused me. Which was odd because 'confuse' and 'ZKaiser's post' don't ever go in the same sentence. So I thought about it and then it hit me, "Was the guy who busted in someone that Bentham questioned while looking for Iva in Level 5?" So I went back to 536 looking for the guy but couldn't find him.
Was he shown somewhere else? Because I gotta say, if THAT happened? That would be FUCKING INCREDIBLE and I would instantly take back my criticism.
However, it just hit me now that you might be suggesting he lived among them and hearing that he was the king of Kamabakka is what set him off, to which I would have to say while a good idea, is probably not the case because they called him the king of 'new-cama' (has the community decided on an appropriate translation for the 'newkama'/'newcomer' gag yet?)
Just so we can be on the subject the reason I disliked this chapter…
Well there are many but I ll state a few:
- The way hannyabal was taken out doesnt cut it for me
- The dude that comes from nowhere to shoot on Iwa just so she can display her skills also doesnt cut it for me
- loads of supposed humor i dont find that funny if i take into acount how many potential pages of new info and good stuff it has ommited
- Even though 10 hours have passed we are in reality no closer to Ace execution in that 16 hours Oda can throw in 100 chapters if he wants to...or says in one that Ace was executed...
- It was great that we saw Magellans "progress" on the toilet but we saw none of luffy, buggy and mr3 or the marines...
- the flash back also imo was not needed. It is great to explain how hannyabal was taken out cause otherwise its strange but it could be done in a way when less pages again are "wasted" for it We get 19 pages every week and each can contain stuff that for me is awsome (most of the time that is some general info on OP world)
- The way they are having that party in their own town loads of wepons and such and no body does anything about it or cant for me is again strange as hell and untill explained not really ok (it is weird how people were not fine with luffy taking out the warden of the oh oh scary prison and suddenly there are crickets when ex prisoners are having party down on self made level...where are the questions on how and such...it seems that suddenly all is fine and that bothers me...)
And this was my comment greg
blue-san,
1. Hannyabal worked for me ONLY because it was a woman AND it was his type. Oda was careful to add that as him going ga-ga over a woman would be strange as fuck since Hancock didn't do shit for him.
2. Agreed. Although I understand where Wagomu is coming from, when Oda is on top of his shit, we don't need to make up those explanations.
3. I liked the personality tick myself. I think it has excellent potential for humor during dramatic scenes, especially during Iva's death and the passing of the okama crown to Bentham.
4. This doesn't bother me. Just so long as Oda doesn't rush the story. He can slow it down, speed it up, do whatever he likes.
5. Buggy and 3 weren't shown on purpose. They'll come barging in when we least expect it and it will be awesome. Not seeing Luffy didn't bother me because that's going to be a surprise somehow.
6. The fb was a little bit long but it's a solid way to explain why Hannyabal is where is he is. Plus I guess him being in the torture instrument room was a good idea since the users of those very instruments are preoccuppied on the 3rd floor. I thought that was a good call on his part.
7. See, I always imagined that the 'Devil's Tug' was something the STAFF was responsible for and they took people down to level 6. But the fact that the staff has a superstitious term for something the PRISONERS are responsible for???? And how can they claim no one broke out of ID if they can't account for THAT many prisoners? And in X years no one has found the location?
ewwwww.
Still the idea of an okama bar hidden in a hellish prison is fucking hilarious.

Ew is right, Greg. Nobody would dare think of checking the sewers of Impel Down when the guy who is always using it is a poison man.

Well, the criminals certainly don't seem to be affected by it in any way.
Sorry, it's ew.
But ONLY because Oda drew attention to it by making it a superstition among the staff. If it was purely something among prisoners I could understand but the fact that they KNOW something fishy is going on but don't address it? Come oooon.

Could be that most of the staff are more loyal to Hannabal than to Magellan, and therefore will ignore it until such a time when they could use it against Magellan. I kind of got that feeling when they kind of lavished over Bentham.
Could be , could be, perhaps…maybe?
From what we know its strange but lets see if it gets explained

It stinks.
Again, not that your idea is wrong (and not that it's right), but that we'd have to dig for explanations like that isn't cool. I don't like when Oda doesn't tie a bow on his ever-important story points.
"But Greg, Oda could explain it later."
Yes, he certainly could. And I'm willing to give him time to do that. But if this is how he leaves it, ewwww.
The reason for not checking? Probably because ID wants to keep their reputation. An investigation would only draw attention to a potentially large flaw in the system. They're probably also confident enough that no one can escape from underwater to be able to leave such a thing alone. There's a lot of pride in ID's security.
Also, complaining about amount of information you get in a chapter is just acting spoiled. We get more than enough new stuff each chapter to be complaining, especially compared to the pages upon pages of grunting and exchanging the same attacks that some manga feature.
I never thought of the man barging in to attack Iva as anything other than a plot device, and just accepted that. But now that it's mentioned, I agree. It stinks. However, think of it from an editor's, or even Oda's, perspective: How would we show Iva's awesome abilities as part of his introduction? Unless Oda actually plans to have Iva as a major character, I think he'll choose to keep his appearance as momentary as possible. So far, he just serves as a plot character.
This is upsetting to me because he has a lot of potential. I think many will agree with me that a more dramatic relationship built between Bon Clay and Ivankov will improve this chapter more, as well as give space for the next chapter where Ivankov finally shows his abilities as a climax. Unfortunately, from this chapter, I have a foresight that Mr. 2 will not join Luffy's crew afterall, since further character development with Ivankov will ultimately cause further character development for Mr. 2.
Was he shown somewhere else? Because I gotta say, if THAT happened? That would be FUCKING INCREDIBLE and I would instantly take back my criticism.
I don't think he was one of the guys Bentham was asking because this guy wasn't wearing the prison garb which means he's been out for a while. Seems like a weak point on Oda's part.
A possible explanation for the superstition could be that the higher ups knew of the hidden bar and thinking it didn't pose a threat, didn't do anything about it. Though, the more I think of this, the more flimsy it sounds. Hopefully Oda will gives a different (better) excuse.
