Didn't see any thread, so I figured I'd make one since I know people love Movie 6. I've been hooked on his films since that and watching The Girl Who Leapt Through Time.

The light-hearted "action entertainment" story revolves around a modern-day family on a midsummer adventure. Bizarre occurrences spring up around the world, due to the intersections between reality and another world named Oz. At the behest of their 90-year-old grandmother, the family members must work together to save mankind. The film will open in Japan this summer.

This is one of the most sickeningly cliche Japanese animated films I've seen in a long time. I actually felt my skin crawl while watching it.

a thank you. i thought it was just wrong. and i don't even want to comment about how the movie didn't really make any sense at all.

cliché, cliché, cliché. his previous movie was actually pretty enjoyable because the main character was awesome (i only know the french name of that movie, "la traversée du temps") but this one? no~ only that awesome kick-ass rabbit is worth it.

Yeah, I liked the animation of Summer Wars, and some of the characters in the giant family were pretty cool, but the plot is absolutely terrible.

I like how, before for the final battle which could end life on earth as we know it, the characters took the time to have a meal… glad they have their priorities set out... I mean, what was Jack Bauer thinking? Instead of saving the world, he should've taken time to eat, take a nap, go to the washroom...

Judging from the trailer it looks like they took that trippy Louis Vuitton anime ad and decided to extend on it to make a full feature film. They both have those trippy white zones, void of anything but colourful virtual critters.
Weird, but since I absolutely loved "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time", I must atleast give it a try. That one had a pretty weird synopsis, but turned out to be pretty awesome. Maybe this is the case here, too. Even though it doesn't sound like it from the comments of you guys here…

I loved it, the film, the animation, and the story. It was just so awesome.

Even if it somewhat didn't make sense, who cares? It's a movie and if it's fun that shouldn't matter.

I didn't laugh but yeah I totally see where you're coming from.

Anyway I liked the movie, it was fun.

Well, I thought it was fun and well animated, as well as visually imaginative. Cliche, sure, but enjoyable nonetheless.

Compared to The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, I must say that I liked Summer Wars better. Girl Who Lept was great for the first two thirds, and then things just out of hand.

! She'll chase after him? What the hell does that mean? He's going to the future. If she waits, she'll be old and shit. Is she going to research the technology herself?
also, why did the guy ask her out on the last day he had? what was he even thinking, besides wanting some tail before he left?
and why the hell is the future so screwed up, anyway? why does the painting matter? why didn't he take back-up time capsules? why does he have a deadline to return? none of that makes any sense.

basically, it substitutes "being thought-provoking" for telling a coherent story. Maybe that's what you want in an anime, idk. I just watched Summer Wars expecting a feel-good summer hit, and that's what I got.

Where is the danger? Where is the drama? The suspense of toys being attacked or thrown away cannot possibly compare to the nail-biter of when a satellite almost collides with a nuclear power plant. But, no, toys being thrown out is much more important and sad.

That might be the most stupid thing I read outside of Naruto Fan.

greg is being too hard on this–it was a mindless, fun, mainstream appeal sort of movie.
he's totally right about the story, but i think it's enjoyable if you just want pretty visuals and something fun to view with a few friends.

the girl who leapt through time is possibly the best anime film of all time, though, so this is kind of a disappointing follow-up if you're coming into it expecting that level of character development and storytelling.

I really don't get the hate. It's fun, looks great, has a great soundtrack, and a fun cast of characters. I really don't look for deep convoluted story when I watch an anime movie anyway. I thought this was cute.

There was a big ass article about it in Neo Magazine, and it looks amazing, and I definitely thought Digimon the Movie when I saw the pictures, then it showed 4 films that are similar/by the same director (I forgot which) and they had DtM and TGWLTT, as well as two others I forgot.
