My Borders books have all shipped, but… WHY ARE THEY BEING SHIPPED SEPERATELY?!?!
New official Viz media topic V2.

-
Well I went to the other B&N by my house today…it's a little closer than the other one (15 minutes vs. 25 minutes), but usually has a smaller manga selection. They also NEVER put out volumes before the release date and had none of the speed up. They did however have a ton of every volume from 1 - 23 to the point that there were more than Naruto....of course they were a little picked over from Christmas I guess.
See now this store usuall doesn't get in any new manga for like a month now because they order so much in the beginning of December. They have a TON of manga in early December, but then don't get the January stuff until February =/
So I prefer the other one....but sometimes usually both get everything and occasionally the one closer gets stuff earlier.
One thing that is bugging me though is that neither store has gotten Gintama 14 yet...and it was due out in September....has anyone else had trouble finding that volume? I mean the closer B&N actually only has 3 volumes of Gintama...it must not sell there so they don't order any...they also don't ever order Hunter x Hunter and never have past volume 23.
-
So I went into the city today as promised &….I couldn't find them. oh well. As long as I get them before my birthday next week, I'll be happy :). I DID find the January issue of SJ today though & I'm lovin Viz's work with Impel Down so far & I can't wait for more!
i also did see some Chopper school bags on sale but I wasn't sure whether I should've gotten it or not, so I just left it.

My Borders books have all shipped, but… WHY ARE THEY BEING SHIPPED SEPERATELY?!?!
Yeah, mine are being shipped separately as well. Fuck, this is gonna be a hassle to keep track of.
-
@Brad:
Yeah, mine are being shipped separately as well. Fuck, this is gonna be a hassle to keep track of.
I hope my mailman doesn't hate me for all the packages I'm getting
-
I couldn't find them either. I might check back in a week or two, just to make sure, or maybe at the end of the month (that way, I can pick up No More Heroes 2 while I'm at the mall).
-
I picked up my copies yesterday and noticed something this morning. When talking to Cobra, Robin refers to the Poneglyph shes looking for as the "real ponegliff". Is that supposed to be the Rio poneglyph? Or did she not give it a name but just says that she is searching for the "real deal" if you will?

One Piece Vol. 24-28 Review
Overall Changes:
Gone are the gold plated covers, so for those of you who saw the original ugly green logo and assumed that it was just a place holder for the gold lining you are wrong. It’s just the ugly green logo on the cover. The arc designation has now replaced the miniature One Piece logo within the main One Piece logo (i.e. “Skypiea”.)
The volume titles are no longer on the front.
The volume titles are still retained on the back BUT in addition is Viz’s own numbering before the synopsis (i.e. Volume 24 is Skypiea Pt. 1, Volume 25 is Skypiea Pt. 2). The only confusing thing is for Volume 24 they list it as Baroque Work Part 13 and Skypiea Part 1. I looked at both the Shonen Jump issues corresponding to Volume 23 and Volume 23 itself and I really don’t get where they got this number from?!
I can understand the losing of the gold logo (possibly too expensive to publish with 5 volumes a month) but some of the other alterations baffle me slightly, mainly why did we have to get rid of the volume titles on the front cover and couldn’t they have used a better color for the logo? It doesn’t really upset me, just seems really odd.
As far as content goes I’m just gonna get to the two major nitpicks I know most fans are going to pick apart like crazy. The “Zolo” and the “Kami” stuff. Well, to be honest it really doesn’t bother me. In a few volumes they actually use “God” in certain contexts while they use “Kami” to actually refer to Eneru himself. The use of Kami doesn’t disrupt the flow of the translation nor does it fell inappropriate.
Most of us reading this knows Kami = God anyway and at least it isn’t ridiculous as Funimation’s term of “King” for the Skypiea CN dub which was far more distracting. This does bring up the constant issue of Viz watering down their Shonen Jump line and to be honest it does disappoint me but by this point Viz has made it clear that anything that is really popular in their line they are going to behave like sellouts. I think those of us who consider ourselves true fans should just boycott the release completely and only buy the Japanese volumes. Viz isn’t going to change their standards so why should we give them our money when we’re not the target audience.
There’s no point in even discussing the matter, Viz has made their stance clear and we should just refuse to buy their product.
Okay, that was my angry fan boy rant. As I said before I’m not personally offended. The “Kami” and “Zolo” stuff isn’t annoying but there are other things that they’ve done in stuff like Naruto and Shaman King that are far more insulting.
Translation wise everything else is done perfectly. Outside of a few slips into pirating dialect all the names and locations of the original are retained and each of the characters dialogue are pretty spot on.
I’m overall please with the speed up outside of a few nitpicks I listed above. I think Skypiea (why is it always Skypiea when something good happens with One Piece stateside? This was also the point Funi started dubbing their own dub.) was the perfect arc the release in bulk. Among fandom it’s considered one of the “slower” arcs were not a lot happens (there’s not a whole lot going in the character development department, no weapon upgrades, no new crewmembers…well there is Robin but technically she’s been around since like Volume 14). Still when reading this I really liked how Oda made her role in the crew essential for this arc. I realized without her there there would have been so many instances that the Straw Hats would have a hit a wall. I will continue to buy the volumes and hope there are no major edits in the futures. (Once again leaving a word untranslated I don’t count as an edit, especially if we all know the context of what it means. Besides you people should have seen this coming after how they handled it in Dragonball.).
O-chan
Also, on the Rio Poneglyph translation. Ouch. But given the translation errors they had in Inuyasha when they started to release in only in GN (around Volume 15) this isn't too bad and I honestly didn't catch it the first time around.
-
Didn't Black Beard mention something about Luffy's haki when he saw is 100 mill bounty poster? Seems it was completely skipped over in the VIZ translations.
-
They should call it ambition anyway, so as long as they did, no loss there. I don't think Teach was using it in that context anyway.
-
So I went into the city today as promised &….I couldn't find them.
So you went to Travelling Man then? They usually get new volumes pretty quick, give them about a week and they'll probably have them.
-

Yeah I went there. I did ask the cashier about them & thats exactly what he said. But like I said before, I'll wait for my birthday & hopefully I won't have any missing parts of story (minus the rest of the speed up volumes ) & I'll be happy.
BTW I just noticed something in SJ. Why is Gear Third called Gear 3?
-
Instead of boycotting the releases wouldn't it make more sense to just send VIZ letters? I mean if VIZ doesn't know enough fans hate the edits/translation they're not gonna change, simply not buying the product just sends VIZ the message that they don't need to put as much effort into their product.
Also I was disappointed to find that my local bookstore didn't have the new volumes before the official release date. On top of that I bought Volume 23 as well as 21 by accident, thinking 21 was 22. Boy was that absent-minded of me.
-
Just bought 24 and 25. Good stuff.
Though one thing annoys me….The price used to be $7.95 per volume and now it's $9.99.... :\

Seriously…who really would have THAT much of a problem with it?!?
-
Well, I just got back from Borders and all I could get was volume 28, despite the website saying that 24,26, and 27 were likely in stock (they didn't have 25 at all for whatever reason). Apparently the other volumes were still boxed up in the warehouse in the back so I guess I'll check back in a few days.

Man I had no clue how lucky I was….I saw all of them on sale at my local Barnes & Noble on the 1st of January. I bought 24, 25, and 26, and came back two days later for 27 and 28 and had no trouble. Do you think a ton of people will buy these volumes?
-
okay i've got a question why does viz cover up hancocks breast when they leave tsunde's alone i'm not big on fan service since i prefer real women over manga drawn ones so that's not why i'm angry i'm just angry because characters should stay the way they look because that's how oda intended for them to look plus the whole naruto doing the same thing and getting away with it just pisses me off more.
the only reason i buy the mangas is to support one pieces growth in the U.S or for times when i don't have a computer but to be honest the first one is the bigger issue for me, does anyone know how much one pieces popularity has boosted lately, like how it's selling against naruto and bleach (oh god that hurt for me to say) it seems like it's becoming much more popular now, with more season dvds coming out and the manga volume catch up
-
I just realised the feb issue was in Travelling Man today. I didn't realise since when I saw the Jan issue with Luffy on the cover, I immediately picked it up & bought it (I wasn't in there for very long) without paying attention to the other issues. The feb issue had Ultimo on the front right?
-
oh yeah i had one other thing i wanted to ask with my question from before i know that we're not at naruto's level in America but what about in other parts of the world
-
oh yeah i had one other thing i wanted to ask with my question from before i know that we're not at naruto's level in America but what about in other parts of the world
It's HUGE in Japan, as far as I know it does well in Asia and Europe but I don't know how well.
-
I just noticed that they edited the Color Spread in jump. They put an undershirt on Hancock.
-
Has anyone seen the manga sales on Amazon lately? "One Piece" is doing really well.
-
It's HUGE in Japan, as far as I know it does well in Asia and Europe but I don't know how well.
Huge is an understatement… I'm pretty sure it would be considered the most popular manga over there. It's the best selling manga of all time.
North America, what are you waiting for? Get on the hype train.

Hey no offense, but your whole post was a complete contradiction of itself…It's hard for me to determine if you're happy or not. First you say to boycott the speedup, (in efforts to make Viz make a more accurate translation, which is a rediculous way to go about doing it, may I add), and then you say you're pleased with it. And who are you to determine what makes a true fan or not? I've been waiting and fighting for this for years. You have no say in what I should purchase or not. And what do you mean by target audience? Viz is handling the series great...you're making it sound like they pulled a 4Kids with the series. I'm sorry, maybe I misinterpreted your post? Maybe you were talking about something else to boycott? But your post was very ambiguous, so disregard everything I said if that wasn't what you meant.
-
Huge is an understatement… I'm pretty sure it would be considered the most popular manga over there. It's the best selling manga of all time.
I have yet to hear it's the best-selling manga of all time, only that it's the best-selling Shonen Jump manga of all time.
-
Sigh, I knew something was off with "real poneglyph." Stupid morons. As far as the lady parts cover-ups, I'm quite positive that it is only for the magazine. I'm also sure now that Law will still be flipping Kidd the bird in the books.

You can't blindly defend everything Viz does because they're doing what you personally have wanted. I'm very happy about the speed-up but looking at each volume with great trepidation. If One Piece wasn't my favorite series, I wouldn't be wasting my money on these new volumes because the changes often do detract from the reading experience for me. Viz's handling of most series should not be called "great", let alone One Piece.
By the way, saying purgatory is better than hell doesn't really do much, and neither does saying "It's better than 4kids." Excuse the dramatic metaphor, but as much as I admire your love of the series, Viz is only doing a passable job, certainly not worthy of the price hike.

In my defense I was actually representing what I believe hardcore anime and manga fans would bring up. I've been a long time otaku myself but I tend to judge things on a more case by case basis as far as editing, dubbing, etc. goes. A lot of hardcore manga fans are not nearly as liberal and they see ANY editing as an insult to the original. I simply pointed out what fans would be offended by and made a suggestion based off of how Viz has handled things in the past. Because One Piece is part of their mainstream Shonen Jump line it is also subject to the same alterations and edits that line has had over the last few years.
I'm personally overjoyed at getting 5 volumes of OP a month. But I also know how Viz operates as a company and all I'm merely stating is that there are those people who WILL NOT be happy with the changes made and I'm simply suggesting that instead of moaning and ballyhooing over the internet for 50 pages that THEY simply avoid the release altogether.
I like how Viz handled things and the whole "God" issue was not completely avoided. As I stated I prefered how Viz chose to deal with it as opposed to how Funi dealt with it in the CN dub because the replacement word felt far more jarring. I'll take Kami over King anyday.

oh yeah i had one other thing i wanted to ask with my question from before i know that we're not at naruto's level in America but what about in other parts of the world
Here in Germany its fairly popular. It won the prize for best manga in 2005 and in 2008 it Vol. 44 won and in 2009 Vol. 48 won.
In sales of the manga its usually first or second place. When it is second its usually behind Naruto >>. The problem is that Naruto gets much more publicity. You never see commercials for One Piece things, but Narutos has a commercial every 2 seconds ><
Vol. 50 and 51 beat Naruto, though.. -
Naruto's anime was butchered in Germany though, right? That was my understanding.
-
Yeah, it was. Yet its still more popular than One Piece. The OP anime only very bad part in Germany was the CP9 saga. The others before that were cut, but still somewhat reasonable. The Thriller Bark Arc has so far no cuts. We are on episode 357 now. But episodes 314 and 325 were a bit cut. The belonged to the new episodes we got…

After this, I don't think I'm gonna order from Borders anymore. Splitting up my manga into different packages when I asked for them to be grouped, giving me a projected release date of the 11th for 26 and 27… I'll be better off pickin' the others up at Books and Co.

lol, thats cool. There are quite a few there… -
I just read an article in the December issue of jump, they mentioned WANTED, and the editors note said "Hasn't been released in english YET" hopefully that means we might get it one day
-
I wonder what's up with Volumes 27 in my local B&N…. They had all the volumes but that.
-
I wonder what's up with Volumes 27 in my local B&N…. They had all the volumes but that.
they never have large amounts of new manga volumes or any manga volumes for that matter at Barnes and shit Noble. If you don't see your manga on the shelf then chances are they don't have it.
Someone probably beat you to it sadly.
-
But here's the thing. 27 was not even on their list when I checked it out at customer service. I assumed they did not get any at all… maybe due to some stocking error. I'll just buy it on DeepDiscount if I don't see it this month.
It's wierd though.... Why 27? lol, I was looking forward to that one the most.

What changes make you uncomfortable? I'm curious to know what edits besides "Zolo" make you go, "woah, that's totally not right. Shame on you, Viz, your handling of this series is mediocre." If you weren't a huge fan of the series you would probably have not even noticed the minor edits that Viz has made. I'm glad you recognize my feelings, but if you are totally bothered by the handling that Viz is doing with the series, then it's simple, don't buy them! And I agree, Viz isn't 100% with their translation, (which is understandable), but they have been getting better with each volume, IMO.
I've argued with you about this in the past. There's no reason for this discussion seeing as how you and I both know my feelings for the speed up already. You're arguing with one of the most stalwart Viz supporters in the thread. You will be hard-pressed to change my feelings. Let's leave it at that.In my defense I was actually representing what I believe hardcore anime and manga fans would bring up. Okay, thanks for clearing that up. I wasn't too sure what stance you held in your prior post but now you've made yourself clear. Sorry about my other reply to you. And I agree with you. You know what, let the so called "hardcore" fans complain and moan…At the end of they day they will be tearing their hair out for stupid, minor things and I'll be enjoying my One Piece manga.

Darn right man…

If we didn't moan and complain all the time we'd still be getting terrible anime dubs courtesy of FUNimation.
But I agree. It's not like Viz is going to listen to us anyway.

Buuut… those things are very minor and Viz has no control over the "biggie" (Zolo). If they weren't "listening" to us they wouldn't have done the speed-up.

Cool glad to know I'm not the only one.
@Mikey:
Buuut… those things are very minor and Viz has no control over the "biggie" (Zolo). If they weren't "listening" to us they wouldn't have done the speed-up.
Exactly. I guess Kaiolino missed the 3 or so pages where we specifically stated in about every post how we unrelentlessly wrote to Viz… AND THEY LISTENED. I mean we just got a God damn 30 Volume manga acceleration, how can you say they won't listen?
-

Terrible anime dubs? I beg your pardon? Ever heard of a thing from the NOT SO DISTANT PAST that AIRED in NORTH AMERICA called the 4KIDS DUB OF ONE PIECE?!? FUNimation's a blessing. Period.
