I imagine it's to give the impression that his skin is incredibly dry.
Hmmm, I've never thought of it like that.
Makes sense. -
My god, little!Chopper looks awful in that shot.
Well, not awful but it's just not my cup of tea.
-
Human Chopper's face reminds me of Zoro's in that shot. With the sideburns and everything.

That could be a re-use…

Who was the AD in OVA 2 - Romance Dawn?
-
Takeo Ide .
-
Thanks for the Info.

I just saw movie 10 and the animation really was kickass, espeically the first 20 minutes. It actually took me a while to get used to the detail in the art.
Looks like Koizumi wasn't a contributer this time…I miss that animator.
-
Who was Strong World's animator again? I heard somewhere that it was someone named Kagami, the same guy who did the yu-gi-oh anniversary movie. I think I'm wrong, but I just wanna be sure.
-
Masayuki Sato was the animation director and the character designer.

I'm sure you are referring to Ryou and Yuki's scenes. XD
Koizumi is gone.

D:
Not as much the animating but it's the directing of those few minutes that were done really well. By the way, who animated the opening sequence?

Yep, Animation Direction was great. I think Sato used to work for Production IG, but I'm not really sure.
Opening sequence of Marineford was entirely done by Ryou Onishi.
Luffy's Opening sequence with the animal fights was entirely done by Yuki Hayashi.
-
Who's the AD of Episode 460? The preview of it looks a lot like Episode 0 to me, did anyone from that work on it?
-
460 will be handled by Toshio Deguchi. The animation director for Episode 0 was Shigefumi Shingaki. (and yes, that brief scene with Roger in his cell also reminded me of the OVA. I believe it's the lighting that did it)

Do you know who did the dance scene?
-
Do you know who did the dance scene?
Not yet, I'm itching to know who did it. Although, the leg movement resembled Ryou's style.
I'll let you know if I ever figure it out.
BTW, Sanji's fight scene, starting from where he drops the cigarette until he beats the Gorilla is the work of Kenji Kuroyanagi, even though he is uncredited, or credited under a different name(Which usually happens), I'm pretty damn sure it's his work.
And I think Tate's scene is the one where Franky is chased by a monster in a hallway at the end, then Franky defeats it.
I'm pretty sure everyone have figured out Shida's scene by now. It's the starting from the White Snow Lions and Gear 2nd up to when Luffy Jumps on Billy.
Even though I wasn't impressed by the final G3 scene, I still want to know who did it.

Dammit, still one chapter pacing. I'm disappointed.
Edit: Looking again at it, it might be 1.5 chapter pacing.

462 = chapter 553 (Conflict at the Summit)
463 = chapter 554 (Admiral Akainu)
464 = chapter 555 (Oars and the Kasa)
465 = chapter 556 (Justice Will Prevail!!) -
So much for good pacing in this arc. :(
lol, the Japanese fans are pissed off about Megumi Yamashita. They want her fired because of her last ep. Anyway, I hope some good animators work with her. And hopefully we don't see any shell shots like her last episode.
Looking forward to Katsumi and Ide.
Shimunaki is kinda weird to have him back, I hope he have improved.
-
Wait, they take offense to Yamashita, who's only done three episodes, and has established herself as being the middle-of-the-road, average director, while Deguchi escapes criticism (unless I'm just not informed) despite doing eight episodes and having a much, much more wooden style?
But I guess to be fair, he has gotten a little better since 408, and 459 actually wasn't bad at all aside from the last two minutes or so. I also noticed that, like Yokoyama, he appears to be better at drawing the more complicated faces and designs rather than the simpler, more anime-esque ones. You'd think it would be the other way around.
So Shimanuki's back…but for how long? Anyway, I hope he has a better here than he did with 406. I'm content with the list, but yeah, the directing's really going to have to pull this one through. I hope Ishizuka and the team working on Oars Jr. can actually make that material work and not come off as a naked grab for sympathy like it came off to me in the manga.

That's jumping the gun a bit.
The two episodes we've seen so far have had decent pacing while using mostly one chapter. -

That's jumping the gun a bit.
The two episodes we've seen so far have had decent pacing while using mostly one chapter.The previous two chapters were also 19 pages long.
-
Before, the anime didn't have to contend with fourteen-page chapters of non-stop action and sometimes consisting only of pagespreads, and I think that's one of the manga's flaws sometimes. I love the detail Oda puts into them, but sometimes he goes a little overboard. Re-reading Enies Lobby, there are numerous spreads (especially in the invasion phase, the part that got knocked the most in the anime adaptation for dragging, mind, and this was back when they were still doing roughly two chapters per episode) that didn't need to be spreads at all (as in, the only thing that made them a spread was the upper left corner on the first page just barely crossing over onto the second; would have worked fine as two separate pages otherwise).
-
I'd say, it looks more like this.
461 = 551 pages 18-19, 552 pages 2-16
462 = 552 pages 17-19, 553 pages 3-15
463 = 553 pages 16-17, 554 pages 2-13
464 = 554 pages 14-15, 555 whole
465 = 556 pages 2-13And I'd better be wrong.
-
Because the chapters they were based on didn't have action/fighting…
Well the next episode at least should be ok.
I skimmed through it and the Ace/Whitebeard flashback is quite sizeable, with a lot of different situations and locations.
The chapter also ends with a bit of action, which helps. -
I don't have a problem with animation but the pacing is dreadful. Maniford is a big arc they can cover more material.
-
lol, the Japanese fans are pissed off about Megumi Yamashita. They want her fired because of her last ep.
why? her last episode was the one from bon-chan?
-
465 = 556 pages 2-13
And I'd better be wrong.
Episode 465 is impossible to predict right now, not knowing the title of 466..
But if i had to guess, they'll probably cover the entire ch. 556. That's too good of a cliffhanger to waste. -
That's jumping the gun a bit.
The two episodes we've seen so far have had decent pacing while using mostly one chapter.As everyone said, those were non-action chapters. Now the action parts will drag a lot, unless they add some amazing filler. But I doubt it.
why? her last episode was the one from bon-chan?
Yeah, the bon chan one. I guess the canonballs scene turned them off.
The first half was terrible animation wise, some of the worst One Piece had to offer in ID.
Anyway, I care about the key animators, they can make a shitty episode look good.
Wait, they take offense to Yamashita, who's only done three episodes, and has established herself as being the middle-of-the-road, average director, while Deguchi escapes criticism (unless I'm just not informed) despite doing eight episodes and having a much, much more wooden style?
They were commenting on the list, so I have no idea what they said about the others. But they were also disappointed the starting of the war will be handled by someone average.
-

That didn't stop them from ruing 536's end.
-
@Superbear:

It's not a big arc.
Nor does it have much material. What covers about three volumes of material is fighting, single basic actions take more panels up, but less actually happens. -

What does Oda think of the Anime today? I remember him being excited when they first made an animated episode of One Piece, but what about now? I can't imagine he is perfectly happy with it. Any interviews or anything giving even slight hints?
-
Oda's Japanese, which means he doesn't have the abiltity to make any sort of criticism.
-
Have you read anything he's said about Movie 10? He still has plenty of good things to say about the staff and the work they do. I also don't think he puts each and every episode under a microscope and dissect them like we do.
-
I think it's a very different situation with Oda then with most people.
For one thing, I think creators fall into two categories in regards to adaptations. One half is the Alan Moore variety, extremely hostile and strict about how people treat their material, and will either seek it's destruction or the removal of their association and name from the product.
Then the other half are people like Oda who are almost too amazed by the fact that "Oh my god! They're making a MOVIE/ANIMATION/VIDEO GAME/T SHIRT of my story? Oh wow! I've made it!".
I think Oda's not a guy who even worries about much else then that simple fact. Probably just seeing his stuff get animated is magical in the first place.
-
Oda's Japanese, which means he doesn't have the abiltity to make any sort of criticism.
That didn't stop many mangaka from openly criticizing adaptations that violated their original work. At the worst, he could keep silent.
Oda's always mentioning the anime/anime staff on his Jump corner, interviews and even SBS.
Like this:
The anime, the parting with Merry, splendid job making me cry. TOEI FIENDS! Makin' me a wreck on a Sunday morning. But then again, anime in general is a huge manga advertising. The OP anime is a big hit, why would he complain. -
I'm really disappointed! Chapters 553 and 554 are separated! =/
I can't believe it!
-
Oda's Japanese, which means he doesn't have the abiltity to make any sort of criticism.
It varies, I remember when the creator of Rurouni Kenshin was extremely unhappy with the final OVA, after they completely changed the ending of the series.
-
It would be bad business for Oda to say anything remotely bad about the animated adaption. It's all about satisfying the public. If Oda says something is going to be awesome, then there's going to be alot of loyal fans that follow suit.
I could be wrong but since it's Toei and rating being involved, I could assume.
-

He's not the only one. Way way waaaay back when the classic anime Urusei Yatsura aired on TV, I've heard many rumors saying that Rumiko Takahashi (Ranma 1/2, Inuyasha) had so much of an issue with the directional style of Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell) that he left halfway through the series and was replaced by someone who stuck closer to her manga. Mind you this was at the beginning of her manga career.
As far as Oda goes I believe the overall product is still excellent and the anime has gotten in right more than it has gotten wrong. I think us, by picking apart and studying specific animators for specific episodes, have become more sensitive to when the animation isn't perfect or when there is a weak director as opposed to it usually being an afterthought. That being said I do hope Marineford does gradually take on the animation style used for the end of Thriller Bark, Strong World, and the newest opening.
Even in the first two episodes there's a definitely a different "feel" to the animation where things seem to have a greater depth of color and detail despite some VERY sloppy character animation (I'm looking at you the end of episode 460) so I have some high hopes for the animation team.

Speaking of Ruroni Kenshin, it's rather darkly humorous to read Watsuki's commentary in the volumes about the anime going into fillers for the first time. He basically says that he's looking forward to it because he was curious to see ''what another person's take'' on the series would be like. And, well, we all know how that turned out…
-
And, well, we all know how that turned out…
Oh God don't remind me.
I'm still bitter they never animated the final arc.
The Kenshin anime will never be complete :cwy:At least One Piece will never have that problem.
-
That and they KILLED HIM in the Ovas.
-
@JERK:
That and they KILLED HIM in the Ovas.
Yeah there is that too…
-
I saved myself by skipping the filler.
I don't want to even know whom it was.
