This. The ending was so terrible how they handled that. I felt embarrassed to like the series.

well in the original comic, x men was a play on g-men so i dont mind that so much. But yeah this movie had a couple of cheesy lines. Still a good movie tho with solid acting.

It was the way it was done.
Just like Charles, "Next thing you know I'll be going bald" joke. The last 5 minutes of the movie has so much cheesiness that I became constipated the day after.
The only thing about this director I don't like is, it seems he always ruins my favorite characters. Like he has a personal vendetta against me.
"Oh boy Cyclops is awesome, I can't wait to see him unleash his rage of Jean's death on the Juggernau- OH…. well... No way Jean would kill him, that's her soft sp-"
"Sabertooth is the man! I- it's over?"
"Yeah! Nightcrawler! Whoa... his body... Whoa... he's a wuss. He'll man up..."
"The BLOB? OMG this is gonna... He died off screen... TO SABERTOOTH?! ASDFJGLA"
Yes I like the blob. Screw you guys. :getlost:
Matthew Vaughn didn't direct any previous X Men films.
I thought it was endearing, I didn't find any of them cheesy or cringey, they were just nice little nods that, at the same time, made-sense in film. I mean they had to establish they were the 'X'-men someway. It just sounds like the fact that they said the words 'X' Men is what annoys you about it.
The bald joke works because that's a cliche saying, and also the audience know he actually does go bald. I mean he's just been made a professor, so he's just mocking his smarty aura.
Nightcrawler was great.
While the cramming of in-jokes and continuity nods was a bit too much at the end, I didn't really mind it as these things happen in the comics too.

No,no… it was definitely the delivery of the X-men line.
The movie seemed to be screaming "That's when THIS HAPPENS!" at certain points and it bothered me. Like the dramatic pause when Charles got shot. I rolled my eyes pretty hard.
But I get annoyed easily so ignore me.
And I got the bald joke, doesn't mean it wasn't cheesy.
But I just learned something new about the Director thing, so pretty much a collective of directors hate my favorite characters?
great. :/
Nightcrawler was great.
Really? I'm used to the Nightcrawler with swords that kicked butt.
but I think he was way older in that continuity. Since Bobby drake (Ice man) was an adult too….
Nightcrawler isn't much of an agressive fighter really and he hardly ever fights with swords (though he often fantasizes about being a pirate). He's much more the guy who cheers everyone up and has a very optimistic outlook. I'm not saying he doesn't fight at all, but it's one of the least important facets of his character. I think his movie protrayal was done very well.

I can't remember the comic series in which he did anymore, but it was awesome. I think it was the "New X-Men" series.
I fell in love with him in the cartoon show. What series did he talk about being a pirate? :O
Edit: FOUND it. The sword was called the soul sword! I knew I wasn't crazy.

X2's intro with him is still one of the best IMO in the past 20 years.

Agreed. Classic music with action scene is pure art. More importantly, this scene is the trigger of the events that are yet to come. It has a purpose.
I have loved Wolverine fighting the commando in the mansions, it was really brutal and I love the theme of escaping quickly or running away.
Was Iceman part of the first 5?

Definitely; more of the X Men films should've had stuff like that!

Yeah, like pyromonki was implying, it's more like the film suffered from contrivances. Instead of letting characters develop naturally, it had more of a feel that the audience knew who the characters were going to become and it played on that. It felt stiff and unnatural in a hamfisted manner.
It's a good movie, but it's easier to just say "No, we're not G-Men" and leave it at that. The audience isn't an idiot and it actually could have come off as a clever comment.
I have a soft spot for the X-Men films though so I still enjoyed it for the most part. But something just didn't sit right with me.
@Badass:
In the comics? Yes.
Thanks .
I just realized that comic I mentioned wasn't the right one at all. That comic series was recent.
Does anyone else remember the X-Men comic where Nightcrawler uses a sword? It's the same series where Wolverine wheres a bandana and Bobby drake is an adult with a beard(?)
I just googled it and couldn't find that cover. :/
The original five of the comics were Cyclops, Jean (Marvel Girl), Angel, Beast (no fur), and Iceman.
Interesting, since Iceman was supposed to be there since the beginning, yet manages to be younger than majority of the team, even now. …..Funny that.

No but that's hilarious.
It's not his own comic series, it's an X-men series where Wolverine get the adamantiam ripped out of his body, and where's a blue bandana.
I should just be asking /co/… And I will.
After some searching it lead me to this.
X2's intro with him is still one of the best IMO in the past 20 years.
that was the perfect way to start an X-men movie

Could be the Age of Apocalypse.
Anyone else pissed with how they portrayed Iceman in the movies? He was one of my favorite X-men and….while he had reasonable screen time they just didn't get the feel of him. He was just that dull everyguy that was attached to Rouge. I liked how they showed his relationship with Pyro in X2 but they should have expanded on that a bit more in the third.
I don't really like the actor they chose for Iceman. Shame, since he's my favorite X-Men, next to Psylocke (who I never expected to appear in the movies), Rogue (wish she weren't the Shadow equivalent), and Gambit (…....you know).
Psylocke appeared in the previous Xmen movies…ahhh! what a shame, I didn`t even get a glimpse of her presence.
Or was it that cosplaying purple haired asian lady in X3?

You guessed it! She's even credited in the movie. And she died.
This is my tier list of favourite characters at the end of the '90s (still need to read all the comics that appeared last decade with the exception of New X-Men and Astonishing):
Top tier:
Shadowcat
Nightcrawler
Magneto
High tier:
Wolverine
Emma Frost
Pete Wisdom
Beast
British Psylocke
Colossus
Cyclops
Rogue
Mid tier:
Jean
Asian Psylocke
Banshee
Forge
Storm
Iceman
Havok
Polaris
Gambit
Cannonball
Marrow
Low tier:
X-Force
Archangel
Bishop
Cable
Generation X mutants
Rachel Summers
Fuck off tier:
Jubilee
The only movie character that really dissappointed me was Cyclops. The other characters like Storm I never had any attachment to, so I don't care they kind of suck.
James Marsden still wants to do X4 and X5 with the whole gang and Singer, so I hope they get a chance at redeeming him.
It would have been awesome if they dressed up gambit this way in the movie.
Gambit was originally supposed to be played by Josh Holloway.
Would've been worth seeing.
Did Bruce Timm did any animation projects with Marvel?
What is the deal with studio's making movis worse and worse as more movies go on and then rebooting and making a good movie? Why couldn't they just make the movies in the series as good as the reboots? I say this because X-men is a perfect example, X-men was ok, X2 was better in some ways, worse than others, and x3 was terrible, then X Origins was unflappingly atrocious. Then this comes out and it's good again? Why couldn't X3 be this good? What are your theory's?
Watched the movie a couple of days ago and I liked it a lot. Initially after watching the trailers I didn’t have much hope. It was until I watched the character trailers(its unlike me to watch any thing other then the usual main-movie trailers) that I thought that this movie was going to be good. I kinda regretted watching the character trailers cause I’m sure the movie experience would be so much better if I went in with low expectations
! Story:
I liked the story a lot. The Magneto and Xavier were different from what I have seen before and it’s different for a good cause. I found Magneto more physical compared with his older version (which is a given) and I really liked that; its so much better then Magneto standing around waving his hands around. It’s also refreshing and interesting to see a different Xavier compared to the previous few movies.I find Xavier’s hands on his forehead cooler then any other Xaviers doing it.
! While I found the Magneto Xavier relationship refreshing I found the part where Xavier was telling Magneto about finding the “serenity-rage thingy’ weird. It’s like Xavier is the mentor and Magneto is the pupil and I kinda didn’t like that, cause I always thought (and wanted) the both of them to have the same level of relationship.
1 of the things that I enjoyed was seeing the training for the ‘newer’ (havoc, banshee etc) mutants, it was funny at times . I always thought that in combat, experience is useful and I’m glad that the ‘newer’ mutants didn’t just enter the battlefield with no experience at all and starts using their powers like they have had a lot of experience using it.
! When Xavier and Magneto first encountered Logan I was surprised they didn’t convince him to join them. BUT I’m so glad that for what-ever reason, they didn’t . I’m sick of Wolverine. Out of the many reasons why I never really liked the previous 4 films, I felt that one of the reasons was Wolverine. The first 3 movies didn’t really felt like X-men, there wasn’t much of a team feeling. It felt like Wolverine movies. I don’t hate Wolverine but he has been the main character for so long that I’m glad he isn’t 1 in this movie.
! Action:
I have always mentioned that I found many comic book movies fights lacking dept and much action for 1 on 1 fights. The weird thing is that during the movie, I didn’t really think much about what I mentioned before this sentence. I was totally immense in the action. It’s a truly weird experience because when I was in the cinema I liked the action and fight. But when I was out then did I realized that many of fights weren’t exactly ‘top class’
! Though I must say I loved the action involving Azazel. The part where he teleported the CIA people to the sky and dropping them to the ground was totally awesome. I was wanted to watch superhuman/creatures teleport other people into the sky and dropping them onto the ground. It reminds me that I once thought that the trainers in the pokemon anime should do that , should they have a pokemon with teleport.
! 2 things that I didn’t understand were:
! While many people complained about the continuity I simply did not care. Mainly because the previous movies were ranging from decent to bad. Though I can understand how they feel though. While there are people complaining about redundant characters, I didn’t really complain much on this aspect since I felt that you can’t really focus on that much characters in a 2 hours ++ movie.
Overall this is a good movie and I feel that it’s the best X-Men movie. The story and action were good, though I had a weird experience with the fights I would give this movie a 9/10. First Class set a really high standard for this year's 4 comic book movies.

To me it didn't feel as though Xavier was above him there. It felt like Magneto was succumbing to his troubled past and needed Magneto (as a friend) to help ground him, like friends do. I thought they were just building up the friend relationship more so it was even more 'shocking' when Magneto turned rogue.

Didn't you find it hilarious though? Man I've never laughed or been more surprised at a film scene in my life.

Yeah I really agree, Azael was one badass motherfucker here.
@123:
2 things that I didn’t understand were:
- Why did Magneto moved together with the submarine which he was trying to control in the early parts of the movie?(the part where the CIA first attacked Shaw & co) I don’t understand which aspect of his abilities allowed such thing to happen
I did a quick google search and it says Submarines are mainly made out of Steel(m), or Titanium(nm). I don't know which pertains more to when they were built in the 60 - but it was pretty much him using his magnet powers to lift it.
@123:
- How did the bed railings managed to crack Emma’s diamond form in the Russian place? I found this scene one of the weakest in the whole movie , I felt that Emma could have easily killed Xavier and Magneto while they confronted each other.
Wasn't it established that Erik weakened her incredibly by grabbing her throat etcetera, I believe he even said "one more move to Diamond Form and she'll crack" or something of the like.
@123:
3) Young Erik could have killed Shaw early on in the movie. (assuming Shaw didn’t have his abilities then)
I'm no expert by any means, but I got the impression that Shaw had his powers and that was the driving factor for him to be searching for mutants - people like him. Impressionable ones who went through the process of discovering they were special, presumably like he did - only he could take advantage of that and mould them to his will, and to do his bidding.
I don't think Erik could have. The crazy scene wasn't of his desire - it was just raw emotion manifesting itself through his powers. If Shaw had been killed it would've been by accident. At the time Erik was a complete novice, I definitely don't think he had it in himself (nor could he had he tried) to kill someone just like that.
@123:

I thought the continuity atleast with previous films was impeccable. There are one or two little things but only really small details mentioned in the other ones. Overall I thought it did a really good job including lots of details.

Definitely agree with you, this is a great film. Helped really ignite my love for X Men.
Well. I saw this movie tonight and I really liked it. It was what the previous X-Men movies should have been like. Like everyone else who loved this movie has said,
good acting, development, and plot. The score could've been more moving, but I can live with what's there. In particular, I liked Magneto's development throughout the film, from the little boy who only wanted to see his mother to his amateur attempt to kill Shaw, and then his actions in the last chunk of the movie.
Personally I loved those costumes more than the leather ones in the previous films.
Danm
3 days !
Honestly, major props from me for preditcting the quality of the movie just by watching a trailer.
Didn't you find it hilarious though? Man I've never laughed or been more surprised at a film scene in my life.
Yea, i did laughed at that scene. It wasn't the most hilarious scene i have seen but it was funny.
I did a quick google search and it says Submarines are mainly made out of Steel(m), or Titanium(nm). I don't know which pertains more to when they were built in the 60 - but it was pretty much him using his magnet powers to lift it.
Actually i was wondering how did Magneto moved along with submarine as he was trying to control the submarine that was excaping.
Wasn't it established that Erik weakened her incredibly by grabbing her throat etcetera, I believe he even said "one more move to Diamond Form and she'll crack" or something of the like.
The part that i didn't understand was how the (gold?)bed railings managed to weakened Emma in diamond form. That and i thought she could somehow slice/wringle out of the restrains.
I also thought that when Magneto and Xavier were on the way to slam Emma to the front of the bed , she could have poked the 2 men to death. No pun intended.

Ahh right, why didn't i think of that >.>
I watched this the other day and loved it…. Or at least enjoyed it a hell of a lot more than I originally expected.
The thing I liked most was the really solid cast and acting throughout. (This was most notable with Charles Xavier and Eric)
And as you can imagine laughed at the tiny scene with wolverine.
7.4/10 for me.
This is among my fav. Marvel movies, enjoyed a lot more than I thought~
Y'know, I'm gonna go see this again tonight, and I'm gonna enjoy it. Again!
and I want one of those new costumes…
Great movie, it drags a bit in the middle, I didn't like the costumes or the dialogue (childish).
However, the story is well written, the actors are likeable, albeit not as big stage presence as the original movies.
I think Xavier and Magneto's relationship was brilliant, and Magneto's journey was credible and notable.
For me, the scene that makes this movie worthwhile (and awesome) was "Go f*** yourself"
I thought that scene tied everything together quite well.
B++
Damn, I want to watch that movie.
goes calculating her money
Ok, I spontaneously decided to go and see it today.
It was good. I liked it.
I loved it that they used the same opening as for the first x-men.
Mostly I could understand why the characters acted like they acted but I still wanted to jump in and kick them. Especially Magneto and .. uhm, that flying girl. Angel? Why Angel? is confused
Well… I don't know, I wanted to say so many things and now my mind is just kind of blank.
Angel joined Shaw simply because she thought he's the winning team. I mean come on, she saw Azazel kill dozens of agents in the compounds; she'd rather be on the good side of the guy with the teleporter who can kill you in 5 seconds than against.
That's the way she saw at least (I think =P)

yeah, exactly. And that's what I just don't like. I would never choose my side like that. I can understand her reasonings, I just wouldn't do the same thing :P
Angel also switched sides in the comics (where she joined Magneto in taking over Manhattan, she got better).
One thing that I'm wondering about
! How did the Russians make the helmet that protects against psychics like Xavier? I'm thinking this'll be explained in the 2nd movie if they make one. Also, this might be a wild guess but I wouldn't be surprised if Mr. Sinister appears in as a villain in the 2nd movie
I saw the movie and it was really good. It is way better than the Dark knight, less arrogant, more genuine and more natural. Overrall good performances, unlike Spoony I was nor amazed or disgusted by january Jones. I have seen worse performances in SW episode 3.
I can't believe no one talked about this scene.
!
I was literally speechless during this whole sequence. It was almost biblical.
Yeah, it was pretty good. Honestly though, James Mcavoy made this movie for me. He played Charles Xavier really well. And his character just so happened to have powers that were far more interesting than anyone else's. If someone else had been cast for his role, I probably wouldn't have liked it as much.
Re January Jones. I like her. It seems her choice to go for the 'cold curt' kind of portrayal (considering she is both an Diamond Woman literally and Shaw's merciless underling) is being mistaken for bad acting imho. Shame, were I in her place I'd hate something so small to be so subjective.
