I do agree that the "restorations" on those sets were extremely lackluster and the widescreen video cropping was nothing more than a smoke-and-mirrors marketing ploy.
However, I do think from about set 3 or 4 FUNimation fixed soem of the most glaring errors in the restoration. The oversaturated brightness used to drown out fim grain and artifacts has been scaled down somewhat, and they seemed to have fixed the awful side effect of lines disappearing when the screen shook.
While the restoration work is still second rate and the cropping will remain an issue, it's still a decent buy for those who can forgive these faults.
