Didn't it occur to you that it's airing in October because of, y'know, Halloween? Plenty of kids' stations air Halloween themed shows during October.
After october, they're still airing it.

@dirtmonkeyAL:
Which is why G8 was brilliant really. No kids at all.
But it had that annoying doctor girl with the swirly glasses. She had about the personality of a One Piece filler kid
The only filler kid that I have respect for is one in the curry filler~
But honestly, the Ocean memory arch is the only filler arch I wasn't Funi to skip. I loved the Davy Back Fillers xD
@Gerchak:
One can only hope the ratings for this live-action shit they keep airing is abysmal.
The only thing CN cares about now is ratings. They've already thrown their principles out the window ages ago just so they can compete with Nick. Over at ToonZone where I also post, people don't give a fuck and even went as far as to say that we should just shut up and deal with it because that's the way networks work.
@Lobster:

But unlike all the other filler kids, she wasn't as stubborn. Besides, her sonic screams were pretty funny.

Okay, everyone be honest. Did you all crave a plate of curry after watching that episode?:wassat:
But honestly, the Ocean memory arch is the only filler arch I wasn't Funi to skip. I loved the Davy Back Fillers xD
Davy Back was pretty fun. My favorite part was the boxing match between Luffy and Foxy. Now that was absolutely entertaining.
ah sounds good. Personally I always wanted those little kids to die… or at least get bitchslapped by Luffy...
You did not watch the filler?
The first DBZ dubbers erased Mr. Popo's lips. Which was wierd… because Mr. Popo isn't human in the first place. He looked freaky without the lips too xD
No, the manga editers censored the lips. When they got to that point in the anime they left the lips in. And yeha, Popo is a human, he just has stereotyped pointed ears and he is God's/Kami's slave.
Anybody else notice a significant improvement in Luffy's voice this week? There were still a few frog voice lines, but there were also lots of lines where he sounded like an actual person.
Yes. It was the very first thing I noticed and pointed out in my ctitique of this episode. Even the titles were well read this time around by Colleen. As far as Luffy's intelligence I noticed it,too. His dialogue sounds abit smarter than it should and his voice dumber. Like Colleen does this ditzy idiot voice when I rly feel it should be more of an innocent naive kinda tone. She sounds like a dumb kid when i feel Luffy should really sound more like a bumpkin who just has never been exposed to things like he's seeing, even if they're common to everyone around him.
I do get the feeling the writers, don't rly get Luffy's personality all that well. Atleast not yet. When they have to change or reword his dialogue it sounds too OOC, not to mention intelligent for him. I guess they kinda rely on Colleen to get his ditzyness across through her tone sometimes.
you know almost every early black anime character had those tapeworm lips right. they all look the same. there aren't that many black people in japan u know. and in anime there are hardly any blacks. there people we think are black like Mr.1 but are not
There black characters in anime from the early 90's that didnt have tirehose lips. Altho yeha, it was scarce, like a caucasian-american character who wasn't a loud, boarish, jackass. As things progressed and anime/manga became way more internationally, the media seemed to be nicer to foreigners. pretty positive Mr.3, Mr.1, Aokiji, that dredlocked guy who shot at Mihawk, Buggy's crewmate, etc.are all black. Just like Chad in Bleach is Mexican. It's made as clear as possible through character design. Altho noone in OP has an official race, so who cares?
In last night's episode they changed, "ah, so it's a mystery disease," to, "sounds pretty bad, Chopper, I hope you can help him," or something to that affect. And it does make him sound smarter than he should.
I hope they figured that out, because Luffy says, "so it's a mystery cloud," in next week's episode and I don't want to hear, "sounds like a creepy cloud, I hope we can find it in time."
yeah but 4Kids always skipped the "mystery" lines as well =/ so it wouldn't make sense to introduce them now… or maybe it would. I dunno...
I think that it should make sense to introduce them. I mean, Luffy's not Luffy without them. They add to his character. (imo)

No one should ever care what ToonZone thinks. Oh, wait, no one DOES care what ToonZone thinks.
it would be better than what airing now on CN .
EXACTLY. CN really needs to bring back weekday Toonami.
Weekday Toonami did poorly when it was just DB/DBZ. Considering CN hardly had anything now that it's just Naruto, One Piece and DBZ reruns, it's better they're on weekends.

Well I wouldn't mind a block consisting of Gash Bell, BoBoBo, One Piece, Naruto, DBZ, and I don't know maybe Shaman King if they could ever bring that over or even Yu Yu Hakusho.
yeah but 4Kids always skipped the "mystery" lines as well =/ so it wouldn't make sense to introduce them now… or maybe it would. I dunno...
so they should try to keep dialogue consistancies with the 4kids version? I don't think so. Not to mention that it could just be introduced as a new running gag of Luffy's and wouldn't create much of a problem.
No one should ever care what ToonZone thinks. Oh, wait, no one DOES care what ToonZone thinks.
'Cause they're rational and level headed? I mean, they are kinda right. Yeah, it sucks CN is doing what they're doing, but hey, we're not the people they're aiming their new "look" for. And since they're getting the ratings they want with their new "look", as much as we disagree with it, it doesn't really matter to them in the long run. All and all, a network wants ratings. That's all it's always been.
And I'll leave it at that because I don't really want to get a big off-topic discussion…
Wait a tic, they took out the "mystery _____" gag?
WTF FUNI! Why not take out Sanji's insatiable lust and Zoro's narcoleptic tendencies while you're at it?
Sounds like the episode was good, can't wait for it to be put up on Youtube so I can see it. I wish they'd kept in the "mystery" running gag, it comes up plenty more times in future eps so it's not like it would just be the one random time.
ah, so that WAS a Mystery line.
I honestly Forgot about it, but when I saw him say it at Oni-con, I kinda though "wasn't that a Mystery line?"
but s'far as I remember, the Mystery Cloud line was cut too. I don't remember either Ep having a Mystery line.
I didn't really notice that they switched lines. Must not have been a huge deal.
I didn't really notice that they switched lines. Must not have been a huge deal.
"That sounds complicated. Can you help him, Chopper?"
I didn't recognize it as a "mystery" line but it was one of the lines I was referring to when I said…
I think it's an issue with both the script and the VA, but does is it just me, or does dub Luffy sound more… aware than sub Luffy?
The way Luffy acts and speaks he gives off the impression that he doesn't really know what the hell is going on around him. That he's not all there or he's not paying attention to anything not directly in front of him. Like he's off in his own world 24/7.
Dub Luffy doesn't seem to have that. I'm not sure why.
Knowing that "Oh, so it's a mystery illness" got changed to "That sounds complicated. Can you help him, Chopper?" pretty much confirms my earlier observation. Luffy is being improperly characterized by the dub script.
I have to say I did notice the Luffy thing in the episode that aired last week… he seemed way too aware of what was going on. It was weird. Slightly chilling in a way.
I really don't think Luffy's THAT much smarter all of a sudden. We all wanted the mystery line in there but I'm guessing most of us weren't surprised when it didn't make it =/
Think back to the beginning of the episode when Luffy accidentally broke Merry instead of repairing her, very Luffy like. Saying the old man was chestnut… again Luffy like.
Think back to the second episode where he had that conversation with Nami and went back and forth "Head to Jaya" "don't head to Jaya" "Head to Jaya" and so on. Just like in the original.
Other than that mystery line being gone I can't think of any examples of Luffy being more smart all of a sudden... BUT if you can think of anymore, go ahead and post em.
"That sounds complicated. Can you help him, Chopper?"

For one miss even when everything else he's said and done is pure Luffy? Come on, now…
well he didn't say Jaya the land of meat but XD
Call me if they make Luffy a gentleman scholar. Then we'll talk.

Well the dub VA's are doing there best. You can't please everyone, and honestly you'd have to find someone who could pull it off the way the Japanese VA does. Which would be pretty difficult.

I knew when I heard that line how out of character it was..but I couldn't remember what he said originally.
I've been thinking about this for a while now. With the new dub rocking as much as it is, we should do something to thank Funimation. I had an idea that we get a bunch of people to write letters, draw pictures, or anything else like that and just send it as one big package. Like you guys can send stuff to me and I'll organize it. Maybe put it all in a trapper keeper or something and send it off. Kinda like a scrap book type thing.
What do you guys think?
re: the mystery dub issue. It's probable that the people in charge of the dub just didn't pick up on the fact that it's a running gag. Even if it was caught in the subs (I'm sure Mato could shed some light on that), if there weren't notes that it's a common phrase they could really change it to anything they wanted. "That sounds complicated" is the same basic thing, only without the funny history behind it. So it's not strictly out of character, and I doubt it has to do with consistency.
EDIT:

I think that's a great idea. Reminds me of the "send a thousand origami animals to Japan to try and get a second season of Fruits Basket" project at AX a while back. It didn't work.. but I'm sure Funi would like the fan appreciation. Also, "trapper keeper" is still a funny phrase.
I've been wanting to do that since they got the license but I'm a procrastinating bastard, and kinda forgot about it. I'd be gald to join in with a written letter (which of course would show more appreciation than just a typed up e-mail)
I'm not even aware of the "mystery" gag, can someone please explain it to me?
I'm not even aware of the "mystery" gag, can someone please explain it to me?
Whenever someone tries to explain anything remotely scientific or complicated, Luffy usually labels it as a "Mystery ___". The reason being that Luffy's pretty dense.
We need a montage clip, PRONTO!
I don't remember this particular instance in Jaya, but I do remember in Alabasta when he said "oh, so it's a mystery hole!"

I had a similar idea for if Eiichiro Oda were to come to Anime Expo, and if "One Piece" becomes successful enough in America I could see it happening. I thought of something like a big album series of books similar to what starmen.net did, a big book, possibily multiple ones of enough material was sent in, of any and all fanworks of American "One Piece" fans to be given to Eiichiro Oda at AX.
For example when he was inside the snake in Skypiea (but he didn't know where he was) he called it a 'mystery cave'… and when that man was explaining the dance powder in the Alabasta arc I think he called it 'mystery powder'... yeah, that kind of thing. xD
(edit: too slow... whoops ^^;)
Sometimes, I think you guys just look for something to complain about.
Before people start to complain, you should really figure out exactly what Luffy is saying originally and see if there are different ways to translate it. His phrase could very well mean many things. It also could be a problem of lip flaps. Since they managed to put in "Sounds complicated, Chopper. Can you help him?" in there then "So it's a mystery disease." might have used too few lip movements.
i hought this episode was really well done, and that the only edit i noticed was the whole gun thing (not inclding sanji's cigarette).
a good one. surely better than the last, which dissapointed meh. =o
Well, the edit list for this week is here.
http://forum.screwattack.com/viewtopic.php?p=250565#250565
Again, tell me if I missed anything. I tried not to go on the cigaratte edits/cuts as much, but aside from cigs, this episode wasn't as bad as last week's episode.
I just wanna comment on one thing… in that post, you wrote:
Comment: Navy is back.
You seem to be implying that using "Navy" in the dialogue is another unwelcome holdover from the 4Kids dub. But while 4Kids certainly used the term, it's not like FUNimation should be replacing it with anything else, as long as it's only being spoken.
"Navy" in the dialogue is not an edit, it's a legit translation that doesn't try to reconcile what it says on the emblem with what the organization actually is. It's an edit if they change the emblem to say "Navy" in English (as 4Kids did), rather than leaving it in Latin characters in a different language. :getlost:
I didn't fine anything too wrong with is episode much muchx10 better than the last one
wasent luffy bauty 30,000,000 beries?
@Linkdarkside:
wasent luffy bauty 30,000,000 beries?
Yes his First bounty was 30,000,000, but he does get diffrent bountys throughout the series.
I really don't think Luffy's THAT much smarter all of a sudden. We all wanted the mystery line in there but I'm guessing most of us weren't surprised when it didn't make it =/
Speak for yourself.
For one miss even when everything else he's said and done is pure Luffy? Come on, now…
It's not one miss. It's the biggest miss, but not the first.
What makes you think they won't miss again in the next episode? And the episode after that…
Well the dub VA's are doing there best. You can't please everyone, and honestly you'd have to find someone who could pull it off the way the Japanese VA does. Which would be pretty difficult.
You do understand that I'm talking about a script issue, not a VA issue… right? I mean, it's pretty apparent. The very last word in the text you quoted was even 'script'.

That would be the absolute best case scenario at this point. Sadly, it means the absolute best case scenario is that the script writers haven't watched enough of the show to know what is a normal line and what is a running joke.
@Kairouseki:

It's not about a literal translation. It's about the fact that the joke isn't there at all.
::Long and detailed scientific explanation here::
Luffy: "Oh! So it's a mystery _____!"
The punchline of the joke comes when somebody goes into great detail about what they're talking about it and Luffy immediately disregards what they say and comes to the conclusion that whatever they were talking about is some unknown and mysterious thing.
Also, Luffy doesn't say "Can you help him?" He doesn't say "Can you anything". He doesn't ask questions like that. He makes statements, "Help him!" "You will help him." That's another core part of his character.
^I agree Charagon.
Funi seemes to be giving Luffy an "Ichigo" personality switch. =/
First Luffy's not serious, now he's too serious.
You people bitch too much.
I haven't watched the bleach dub in a long time. Explain.
And here you go, you guys overreacting again. Like I said, it's a little bit too soon to say FUNi is giving Luffy a personality switch based on one or two mistakes.
I'm not sure if they'll miss again and again, but then again, neither do you. Making this whole claim even more ridiculous.
And Lobster just makes it worse.

It's possible. I was amazed when Luffy started dropping his frog voice. I thought I was going to have to stomach that crap through the rest of the dub.
However, just like Luffy's voice, I see no reason to not point it out (and by point it out, I mean bitch about it) until there are notable signs of improvement. If it really was an isolated incident, then there's no harm, no foul. If it wasn't, then the time to make it known is now, so on the off chance that Funi checks this board for reactions, they know something's up.
Since I haven't commented on the latest episode yet, I'll do so now.
Overall, the VAs did a goob job, some of them did even better than in the previous episodes, such as Shojo's, for example. The scene with Bellamy and co was nice. xD Bellamy's laugh and voice sounded good, as usual. Sarquiss' VA did a good job again, too. Also, from what I heard, Ross (the guy with the cap that says "ALLR") had a pretty decent voice. I wasn't really disappointed in Cricket's voice either.
I'm not bothered with Cricket's cig being gone and all that stuff, but I don't even know if I ever will get to see the full glory of the uncut DVDs; I live in Finland, but I do have the player imported….because as far as I know, the DVDs won't get shipped to Europe.(?) I'd like to buy at least some of the DVDs, when they come out....
Anyhow, I knew something was wrong with what Luffy had said (the issue you guys have been talking about), but all I can do is hope that they'll keep the next times he says that "Mystery ___" stuff.
Oh well, looking forward to the next episode, nevertheless.
Luffy's voice was kinda of different but it wasn't too much of a big deal. I'm starting to agree that you guys are just finding stuff to complain about…
