Christopher Walken play Master Roshi
Jack Black play Krillian
Jim Carey play Yamcha
Drew Barymore play Bulma-.-; Not that I hate those actors, it's just that they don't fit...
I would have rather had an asian actor play Goku anyway. Not that Sayans were human in the first place... but still...
Justin Chatwin looks more like... a Goten, or something =/
sigh.. lolz... When I was watching the movie "The Invisible" I never pictured him becoming Goku…
But maybe if he bulks up and un-emo's his hair he'll look the part ;DAnd Samuel L. Jackson would have made an awesome Piccolo. I don't really know who the actor is that they chose…
-
Have you ever watched buffy the vampire slayer? If you havn't check it out on Wikipedia there is a character on that show named Spike…he has Blonde greasy slick hair and was Buffy's love interest around the last seasons of her show and a bad ass vampire...but no bad ass piccolo...no no...samuel l jackson would of been perfect....IM TIRED OF THESE MOTHER FUCKING SNAKES ON THIS MOTHER FUCKING PLANE!!
-
^ why does that guy, Chatwin, look stoned to me?
-
Actually, he's the spitting image of Piccolo Daimaou, whom he's playing, not 'Ma Junior'.
-
Heard that they will also do some scenes in mEXICo…something about a scene like Goku vs. Vegeta....
-
No Saiyan saga. It's about Daimaou.

This is a Gaddn children's program....Mother F**ker" "that's how you do it Goku, you crazy SOB"

No Saiyan saga. It's about Daimaou.
So I heard, but what I mentioned was that I heard that it has to do with a battle at mountains so some have theorized that it could be an offshoot of the Goku vs. Vegeta fight (Goku vs. Piccolo maybe?)
-
So I heard, but what I mentioned was that I heard that it has to do with a battle at mountains so some have theorized that it could be an offshoot of the Goku vs. Vegeta fight
But what Dragonball fight doesn't take place near mountains or with mountain-like formations ready to be destroyed?
The setting doesn't mean it's going to be based on anything in particular, I mean under that criteria we could even say it's based on the battle against #20.
At this point we need to lay off the speculation because it's just gonna turn into a cluster-fuck.
-
^Agreed, but if they somehow decide to add in the Purple Ninja, I'ma attach some bombs to myself and blow up the theatre it's shown in.
-
Well if it's based off of the last saga in Dragonball, it might just suck a little less.
-
I've seen so many different reports about things someone says will happen, only to be contradicted by another source.
My thoughts?
This movie will be an absolute and utter disaster and will friggen tank like hell.
Seriously. First it was reported they HAD to get filming started in November and get it all done by 2008. Then that was supposedly denied. Then it was reported that the story would involve King Piccolo coming to Earth to get the Dragon Balls to wish for world domination (wtf?) and using his…"Namekseijin Ninja" to acquire them. He eventually reveals Goku's past as a Saiyan and goes on about something about them being destined to rule the universe together. Mai is supposedly a shape shifting, black belt who can wield guns. Goku's in highschool and seen as the typical loser kid with potential (as if Goku's origin wasn't similar enough to Superman).
Then that changes and it's suddenly about Vegeta bullying Goku.
Filming was supposed to occur in Canada. Now it's in Mexico.
One of the guys trying out for the part of Yamcha said the movie would likely be out in 2010. Now we hear different.
It's clear that this whole thing is an absolute mess and they have no idea what the fuck to do with this project.
-
Rest assured, there is no way this is coming out next year.
-
No doubt. One can only hope it never sees the light of day again.
-
Someone photoshop that Chatwin guy….tho I wouldn't be surprised if someone already has. Someone go over to some DBZ forums and look around.
-
Then that changes and it's suddenly about Vegeta bullying Goku.
See what I mean Freeman? This is what I meant about the danger of rumors in the Dragonball world.
The movie has nothing to do with Vegeta.
A fucking idiot fan somewhere in the world heard they would be filming in Mexico, imagined that Mexico CAN ONLY BE A DESERT SINCE IT'S MEXICO HYUCK HYUCK and thought this meant filming DBZ-like battles which another fucking idiot fan instantly equated with Vegeta.
AS FAR AS WE KNOW the direction of the film's story has NOT changed since we last heard and is still with the Daimaou theme.
-
But I'm still kinda lost here.
DBZ was the popular one(but that time also has come to pass), DB did poorly in the US from what I can recall. So I think it's safe to say they aren't trying to cash in on popularity anymore, but they are actually trying to make a good film based on the series.
-
So I think it's safe to say they aren't trying to cash in on popularity anymore, but they are actually trying to make a film based on the good series.
Fixed.
Regardless if this is supposed to be an adaption of Dragon Ball, nothing in what was described about the movie has absolutely any resemblance to the series except for the idea of using the Dragon Balls. They've actually gone and taken established characters and completely made them out of character.
How much of a puss IS King Piccolo that he HAS to rely on ninja to steal Dragon Balls for him so he can wish for world domination? The only reason the real Piccolo didn't fight until after restoring his youth was because it would only decrease his life span from whatever energy he would use up. Piccolo simply needed his youth to be able to do as he pleased again.
Copping out for the whole "wishing for world domination" is really weak. Hell, not even Garlic Jr. went that route and went for the whole immortality schtick, even if he was a filler character and screwed himself by getting trapped in his own black hole.
-

Since the actual series? Where he used his own kin? Some of which Goku killed just by throwing them into each other?

????
Not only has it not been confirmed that Piccolo wants to wish for world domination, but in the series his original goal was exactly that to begin with. Youth was a means to an end, just as it might be in the film.

Aside from Goku being 'unpopular' at school, how so? The descriptions that have been given thus far seem far closer than I ever expected them to carry over.
-

As I said, Piccolo sent his own kin to retrieve the Dragon Balls in the original due to the fact that his life would be shortened with the amount of energy he uses up. Piano even wonders if creating the offspring will shorten his life, to which Piccolo denies.
Whereas the description of the movie one seems to be doing away with the concept of him being old and may just end up going with his younger form.

Check the info given on Piccolo when they gave out the summaries of characters. Piccolo wants the Dragon Balls to wish for world domination. In the series, Piccolo clearly said he had no need to wish for world domination as long as he had his youth restored. This basically says that Piccolo is fairly confident he will have no one standing in his way due to his own power, rather than relying on the Dragon Balls to do that.

Bulma's little search for the Dragon Balls are for her own self purposes in the original, whereas she seems to be doing it for the sake of helping mankind. Yamcha appears to be a wiz with the weapons and grafting them to his…van? Whereas the original Yamcha was just someone who knew martial arts and mugged people who he came across, taking all of their loot and Capsules that contained weapons. Yamcha's main transportation was either a hover car or his jet bike. Piccolo I've already listed off. Not only is Goku supposedly the unpopular kid, but he and Chi-Chi have a thing together (when at that time in Goku's life, he was totally oblivious to that type of love). Especially worse when Mai transforms into her and attempts to seduce Goku. If Roshi isn't a pervert or at least a skirt chaser, then that too is out of character.
I still believe the whole concept of this movie started like this. All of Dragon Ball was purchase in manga format. They only read the first book and the Great Demon King Piccolo arc. Skimmed through the first chapter of "Z." Proceeded to then wipe ass with the chapters.
Dragon Ball is just simply a series that shouldn't be done in live action. Especially on a small as hell budget and by American film makers who feel they need to make "creative changes" to an already well established series from over a decade ago.

So how would using characters like Shu and Mai (which he does in the series) be any different. I mean, unless I'm making up the fact that he enlisted Pilaf's help.

We simply don't know that yet.

That's a character description made to give thesps an idea of how to approach the role. Not only are such ideas subject to major rewrites and change, but some false information is deliberately given out to keep rejected actors ignorant in case they spill the beans.
Again, all this saber-rattling and bemoaning the DB series and:
'how it should be'
or
'how it shouldn't be'
is a source of endless humor considering it's coming from and audience the series wasn't even written for. Here my students are practically jumping off the walls in anticipation and all I hear from America is 'bitch, bitch, bitch, moan, rag, rag, bitch, PMS, PMS, bitch'.
I'm all for slamming something if it sucks, but we simply don't know. I'm not about to start bashing it on the idea alone. I'd bash it because it does stupid crap like involve Goku in a school which just….is wrong on so many levels.
But other than the few ideas which MAY not even be in the movie that I disagree with, I'll still hold my opinion and remain as I always do in these situations, cautiously optimistic.
-

Actually, Pilaf released Piccolo from his Denshi Jar. Since upon releasing him, he basically ended up having to tag along and simply worked his Dragon Radar on his ship (which Piccolo seems to have taken over). Piccolo had absolutely no use for Pilaf. Pilaf and crew merely stuck around out of fear and believed they might have been able to conquer at least some part of Earth once Piccolo did. Other than releasing him and providing him a ship and Dragon Radar, Pilaf and crew really didn't do much of anything else from there.
Question though. Is Japan even aware of the kind of translation jobs DB/DBZ/DBGT America had received or how the franchise is even handled as a whole here? Cause as far as I know, the rest of the world got a better or decent handling of the series than we did (hell, it took us more than 10 years to finally get the original music when the dubs around the world either used the original or had a more sped up sounding version of the original music). Not to mention, DB's still big over in Japan due to the DVDs being released after the limited Dragon Box print runs. Whereas here, DB's fallen into the category of "old cartoon fad" that just keeps getting products pushed out to whatever fans are still out there (like Power Rangers).

i totally disagree. i think Dragonball Z is held here as one of the "Classics" instead of "old cartoon fad" . if that were the case then DB games would not sell like a widespread of Ebola. lol comparing its status to Power Rangers is wierd lol u r entitled to ur opinion. but i think alot of ppl here still hold DBZ up as one of the greatest and respect it. i havent heard one person treat it as if it were a fad and they jsut dont care asides from those who gave up on it. More so, ppl are just wanting to move on to other seiresa nd not milk it as much as it already has been.
-
Anon, problem is that those DBZ games are made directly in Japan right now. And with Sparking METEOR now out (Budokai Tenkaichi 3), we really don't know if more games will be made. And as I was saying, I was talking about how it's holding up in the US. Japan's still enjoying it as if it were still airing there. :P
Most of the people these days went from being the typical DBZ kids who watched it on Toonami and imitated shooting blasts at friends to becoming headband wearing, ramen eating Naruto fans.
Unfortunately, things happen differently in the US compared to other places. Let's use Pokémon for example. In Japan, it never took a nose dive in interest from the fanbase. It's still thoroughly enjoyed to this day by hundreds of kids in Japan. Whereas in the US, Pokémon ended up becoming a fad where people lost interest in it. There certainly isn't an epic fanbase size right now for it like it was years ago.
Same holds true with Dragon Ball. Most people these days reflect on it for nostalgia's sake or are just getting into it through the constant re-releasing of DVDs.
Regarding my comment on Power Rangers, it's like this. Remember when it first came out? Parents actually FIGHTING eachother in Toys R Us'es in the early morning just to make sure their kids get the toys before the store sells out again? As time went on, popularity dipped more and more into position where only the truly dedicated saw every single series or those getting into the franchise through the newer series'. Power Rangers is no longer the juggernaut it once was.
Same goes for Pokémon and the same goes for Dragon Ball.
Though remember, I'm basing all this on the American side of it. Quite different in Japan's case.

To me, doing the Piccolo arc makes perfect sense. The martial arts in that arc involve little to no flying or batshit insanity like Super Saiyan, but are still exaggerated and explosion-causing enough for attention span-less little children. Plus, this way, if the movie does well, they can continue to make sequels.
Of course Hollywood is going to take liberties, they always do - but, seriously, why the hell is that such a bad thing? It's a fresh look at an old topic, and it should at least be enjoyable. I'm a big Dragonball fan and I'm looking forward to this in particular. The only arc they possibly could have done that would have made me happier would have been Red Ribbon, but I trust that this arc could work as well (even if they did already make the grievous error of AWKWARD TEENAGE ALIEN LOOK OUT)
Besides, even if it is absolutely mind-blowingly horrendous, at least it will be entertaining like this movie here:
I AM BALROG THE CAMERAMAN HOW DO YOU DO -
Basically it seems to me that Greg is a hardcore Dragon Ball fan who is trying desperately to say that a bad script is fresh…when truthfully it really doesn't follow the series at all....this movie isn't gonna be good...so far it doesn't even sound bootleg material...The words Goku and Highschool shouldn't even go together...and Piccolo is OUT OF CHARACTER..
EDIT: Cow don't ever speak to me again...that movie was an embarrassment to all mankind...
-
I'd rather watch this than see the final result of that movie:
The Great Demon King Piccolo arc IS a good arc to do. But from the basic stuff they revealed about the characters, I'm sitting here with a sour taste in my mouth. The same I get when Uwe Boll makes another video game based movie.
-

Actually, I stopped caring about anything DB years ago. I think the series itself is a joke considering how lightly the author takes it and how much he moans and groans about it.
I appreciate the fact that it's probably the most influential Japanese action/adventure comic….ever....and is single-handedly resposible not only for inspiring some of the greatest series today, but also for getting me where I am today working and living in Japan.
But as for the series, aesthetically speaking, it's an unlovingly created haphazard nightmare.
Given the circumstances I'm merely apathetic to the series.
So rather Cleric, it's the fact I've removed myself from it that I'm able to look at the prospect of a film and stand back without the energy of a fanboy saying:
OH NOES!!!! RUINED PROPERTY MADE foR tEH $$$$$$$$$$$!!!!111
And instead just sit back and wait to see how it turns out.
Basically it seems to me that Greg is a hardcore Dragon Ball fan who is trying desperately to say that a bad script is fresh
Wait a sec. I wanted to go back to this sentence for a moment. You've read the script? Well then by all means please enlighten us.
Actually, Pilaf released Piccolo from his Denshi Jar. Since upon releasing him, he basically ended up having to tag along and simply worked his Dragon Radar on his ship (which Piccolo seems to have taken over).
Ah right, so they were together. Good I was right then. Having the characters Shu and Mai associated with him makes perfect sense.
Question though. Is Japan even aware of the kind of translation jobs DB/DBZ/DBGT America had received or how the franchise is even handled as a whole here?
More importantly than caring about the translation, edits or the rest of the FUCKIN' BULLSHIT that dipshits get their panties in a knot over in the US, they're just happy people enjoy something from their small country. They're still orgasming over the Pokemon phenomenon being big in the US. They don't care about properties or OH NO! HOLLYWOOD MAKING MONEY! They're just happy people are paying attention to them around the world.
Not to mention, DB's still big over in Japan due to the DVDs being released after the limited Dragon Box print runs. Whereas here, DB's fallen into the category of "old cartoon fad" that just keeps getting products pushed out to whatever fans are still out there (like Power Rangers).
No, DB is still big in Japan because DB is DB. DB is unlike almost anything else. DB is simply DB. The closest I could compare it to something would be Godzilla. Every few years it goes into a cryogenic sleep, then reemerges refreshed and revitalized when everyone forgot about it. DB will come and go in Japan, just as it has before and will again. As long as there's a contract with licenses involved, it will be so.
DB will never be loved or appreciated that way in the US by the masses and, I'm happy with that. Because it'd probably make for pretty damn boring cultural differences.

Jamie Chung to be playing Chi-Chi
Yeah, this movie is sure to do great.

Okay, now I'm officially confused. (…yeah)
Goku is being played by a Caucasian..but Chi-chi is being played by an Asian.
What the hell is going on already?!

@Buuhan1- Actually when you come to think about it; when was it ever mentioned the Sayajins looked like asians?

This will turn out worse than that Negima live action movie and the Initial D live action movie combined.

Oooh, don't bring that into this.

Just stating a funny tidbit, like how ironic that ChiChi's gonna have a bigger role than being the comic relief ignored bitch of the series.
-
Wonder what kind of hair style Goku will have.

Too bad she won't be as easy on the eyes as her manga/anime counterpart.
-
Wonder what kind of hair style Goku will have.
Most likely a normal "human" hairdo. This is gonna most likely just gonna be a typical movie but with Dragonball ploties mixed in. Only person to have an odd appearance will probably be people like Piccolo.
The most I see them doing if they do anything with the hair is a style like Adult Gohan's.

I came here to check and see if any good news had been mentioned…
D= wth?!

When they live without incident in the series equivalent of China.

In 2007 terms I think the Saiyans should actually be guidos. You get the blown back hair and the muscles and machismo all in one.
