Favourite Character Design

When Moria's appearance was first revealed, I remember a lot of complaints about his design, with many saying that his appearance was stupid and oddly shaped. I know it's been a while since then, but I was wondering what everyone considered a good character design. What character do you consider to have the coolest or most interesting appearance? When a new character appears, what appearance characteristics make you cringe and what make you drool? What characters do you love the appearance of, whether or not you like that character for any other reason?

For me, the character with my favourite design has to be Sir Crocodile. His slicked back hair, rings, and clothing give him a classy look, while his intimidating frame, facial scar, and gigantic hook make him very menacing. His clothes and the jacket draped over his shoulders give him the appearance of a powerful mafia don, showing that he's the man in charge who holds absolute authority.

My second favourite character design belongs to Sanji. While his clothing and body are very simple, his chin stubble, curly eyebrow, and the hair covering his left eye give a cool, somewhat bizarre look without being too over-the-top.

The characters I don't really like the designs of are some of the henchmen, like Mohji, the Nyaban brothers, Chess, Sarquiss, Yama, and Nero. Most of them were just a bit too odd for my tastes.

So, what do the rest of you think?

Well, I liked Kuro's design, since it fit with my definition of cool. The black suit and the claws. Also, I liked the goofier elements, like his shoes and buttons on his jacket.

I liked the designs for CP9 too.

One Piece is loaded with interesting designs because Oda isn't afraid to take chances. I'm easy to please when it comes to comic books for young kids, so I don't really dislike any designs.

Among my favorites are Enel, Franky, Chopper, and Brook.

The best designs, IMO, are the ones where you can look at a character and every part of the character means something.

Enel's taiko drums, earlobes, gold rings, half closed eyes, and bare feet all serve a purpose in giving Enel that ''absolute god with control of lightning'' feel.

The other three fall into this category too.

Oh yeah! How could I forget about Brook? That's a character I loved as soon as I saw him. I love characters that wear tuxedos and other formal attire.

Definitely Franky, Enel, Brook and Moria, I love over the top funky designs. I wasn't fond of Moria's design at first, but it's grown on me, especially his great facial expressions.

Brooke has some of coolest Desighn in any manga.A skeleton ina Tux.nothing beats that.

Brook - The sort-of-ripoff off Night Before Christmas, was fucking brilliant. The afro and his fighting style and cane-in-sword was a great touch.
Ryuuma - My favorite character, so I've gotta put a word in. Not much here, the zombie design was better than most, but I really loved how he was first shown alive 10 years ago.
Moria - Awesome facial expressions, and his design really grows on you.
Lafitte - He reminds me a hell lot of that guy off a Clockwork Orange, and since he's violent, it was an awesome idea to put him in the manga. The demented and sickeningly violent look was awesome.
Usopp - Not much of a looker, but Oda had the courage to put someone as un-shonenreader-appealing in the manga. That took courage, and his Sogeking alter ego is funny and makes his character look even better.
Kuma - This guy needs more attention. He looks like a giant priest, but the fact that he never talks and his un-priest-like attire and gaze is really mysterious and keeps you begging for more.

And as for me, I really like a lot of Designs in One Piece, but some of my favorites are Rob Lucci, pretty much the rest of CP9, Sir Crocodile, Enel, and Gecko Moria, at least those for the villains, I like all the Straw-Hat designs, and Brook

While almost literally all of Oda's character's designs are wonderfully brilliant, I do have a couple favorites myself. :)

Laffite: Knowing that he's famous for being extremely violent and cruel and at the same time happily tapdancing with a constant smile and an emotionless gaze in his eyes, this guy's just insanely awesome. He's so creepy and twisted. I love this guy.

Brook: A talking skeleton with an afro who wields a cane sword, possesses a very unique and funny laugh, and can also poop. Amazing.

Doflamingo: Very funky and over-the-top look, with the poofy boa-jacket thing goin' on, the flashy glasses, and a very silly gate to his walk. I don't know why, I've just always loved his design very much.

Right now I have to add Hawkeye, he really pulled me into OP and Kuro had a nice design.
Rob Lucci was pretty cool, and Franky was interesting. and Ace.

Oh, yes, I forgot Doflamingo. He's definitely up there in my favorite designs too.

Another thing I love about Brook's design is the fact that, despite being a skeleton, Oda can actually give him expressive faces. (And in the case of the recent chapter, even his afro can be used for expression)

I really like how Oda uses many different body types for his characters and has many different ways of portraying facial features (well, maybe not for his main cast so much….) It's not something you see very often in anime now.

I would have to say Franky is my favorite design because he's just such a jumble of crazy things: a triple chin, crazy blue Ace Ventura hair, a Hawaiian shirt, crazy barrel arms, a speedo?! I mean, I can't even name one normal thing about this guy and yet the whole character holds together so SUPER. When I try to mix things up like that, it comes out like crap.

Some honorable mentions would have to be Brook, Arlong, Dr. Kureha (her pants are awesome!), and Chopper.

Mr. 1 is one of my favorites too, forgot about him. Captain Kuro was flawless. Pretty much any character is cooler when they use sharp objects, I guess.

Franky hands down. But another that's really cool is Paulie's design. He just reeks of badassery, but still, Franky kills it. Hell, I love the whole Water 7 theme! But Enies Lobby's theme was just so boring to me. All those stupid suites, just became an eyesore. Sanji wasn't making things better….

Brook. His design is simple, but brilliant. No one would immagine a skeleton with an afro or a man with an afro in formal atire. Putting them together makes Brook's design surprising, but also very cool.

While my fav character is zoro, I really love Sanji's design. Especially when he's got his sunglasses to make him "Mr. Prince."

I also like Ace's design a lot with the X-ed out S in the tattoo and his -:sad: goggles. Awesome!

I think all of the ranking Marines on the Sea Train were well designed. Except for Nero, he was pretty dumb looking.

That was Lulu. I listed him. I always thought he was awesome and i was sad he didn't get used much.

Pauley had a pretty decent design as well.

Oh yeah, Hina. My favorite female in the series. I also kind of like Sube Alvida's design as well.

Franky just plain kicks ass, my favorite straw hat in terms of design. Brook comes in a very close second of course with the afro. My ideal character design is anybody body that looks like they have been through some shit. Small scars, a little under fed, eyes sunk into their sockets and a stubble. You know the usual indicators that your shounen existance consists of getting your ass beat. Unfortunently this isn't seen often..ah well, atleast I can draw them that way.

I think it would be a lot easier to have a thread for least favorite character designs. As I'd forgotten all of the middle CP9 agents, and also Professor Clover. Blueno was awesome because he always had that great expression on his face.

Gan Fall is one of my favorites too, when I saw him I knew he was going to be great. When he used the Impact Dial on Shura is one of my favorite moments of One Piece, period.

Edit: Buggy the Clown's design really excited me too the first time I saw it. Nothing's scarier than clowns. Clowns holding many knives between all of their fingers. Buggy=Awesome.

Edit again: Wiper was also pretty interesting. I'm fairly certain there's no other fictional story featuring an angel wearing skates and a bazooka.

Lucky Roux, who gave the series it's first genuine death if I'm not mistaken.

I also love the idea that THIS guy is so fast he can pull a gun and shoot somebody without them even noticing him.

Ben Beckman isn't bad either. Apparently he's got a massive following in Japan. He looks really cool with the grey hair and the scar.

I can think of a few boring ones (like Vivi or Kalifa for example), but none I really dislike too much. Ms. Father's Day was kind of dumb.
