An event for more helpful charities for once in this community!

This is a speedrunning event that's quickly become one of my favorite things to watch. While earning money for charity, big names in the speedrunning community take on games and talk about them as they go through. Especially for the retro games this is especially interesting depending on how great the personality of the player and how talkative they are.

You might learn a lot more than you expected if it's an older title.

Sometimes a game isn't a great watch, but for the most part it's a ton of fun and I encourage anyone to give it a chance if you're the kind of person who thinks speedrunning isn't interesting. I never appreciated it before. Now I do! Check it out.

This DKC2 race is great. I really loved the game lineup today and it's gonna keep going strong. I need to see what's up for tomorrow.

Looked at the entire schedule, and while no day has such solid content as the one I missed, I am hyped for the Super Mario Sunshine race.

Uhh what is the time zone on that schedule? And are they actually following it? The next games seem to start as soon as the previous one finishes.

Check the schedule for times specifically that will change based on your computer clock. For hte most part it's just easier to see what they're playing to know what's coming next. The times are pretty accurate though.

Kirby SUper Star is about halfway through right now.

I saw these guys for the first time last winter at the Awesome Games, and this has some great games too. But half my time is devoted to the MLG smash tournament. And some people might be watching soccer, too.

Looking forward to the Mario Sunshine speedrun.

It was cool to watch the Pikmin run right after finishing Pikmin 3. Now sleep.

So far I've only been able to see the current Sonic Unleased run-through, and regardless of however good the game is, I'm amazed at how well they exploit the glitches (or rather, the poorly designed/programmed stages) in the game in order to finish stages in less than a minute.

This is pretty cool. I've just sort of had it on all day and been checking in now and then. That glitch at the end of the Earthworm Jim run was really somethin'.

Are slow runs still a thing? Because I never understood the appeal.

I do slow-run walkthroughs for story games like Last of Us, but otherwise it's more fun to watch glitched speedruns because they have things I'd never thought of.

Ah, story based slow runs I can understand. But almost any other type of game? Awful.

I think he might mean longplays. I'm not familair with the nature of them, but they are runs dedicated to doing mostly 100% of everything at a very casual pace. This includes dailouges. You can say it's almost like a Let's Play without the commentary.

And yes. Longplays are still a thing. Sometimes Retsupurae riffs over longplays of point-and-click adventure games.

Essentially this. You get the gist of it after about a minute, so don't waste your time with the rest. It's going through the game as slow as possible.

Twitch archives their streams usually, if the stream doesn't put a subscriber gateway on it you watch them from their channel. You have to fiddle around with the time though. Archived streams are pretty long, so better be aware of what the schedule was for the games.

Taking a bit of time to watch some Skyward Sword. I don't fully get the allure of speedruns as someone that watches them, but I get fascinated by the commentary and by how deep the knowledge of those speedrunners is for the games they do.

I've heard some people explain it in their runs. A lot of the Japanese games are either faster or glitchier. I didn't hear why, but I assume it's because most of these games were released earlier in Japan.

I know that Bomberman Hero, for example, apparently has shorter boss fights in the Japanese version.

It also looks like Japanese text is shorter on average than the English translations, so less clicking through dialogue.

And some of the stuff they are doing is nuts. I tried to do some of this myself recently since a friend is a speedrunner for this and they kept demanding I do it during my stream of it but it's hard as hell

Two of them doing the gelato skip pretty much immediately was mindblowing. That crap is HARD.

I just finished playing through Sunshine again a few days ago, so this was great to watch, especially for the exploits/time saving tricks. I'll have to give some of those a try (especially the Pianta Village one with all the burning goop) the next time I decide to replay the game…

It has to do with Super Metroid. Near the end, you have the option to save some local animals of Zebes. Voting for "Kill the animals" is basically voting for the speedrunner to avoid that and save time.
