I'll give all the details I can tomorrow in the afternoon or so.

Was gonna give all the info about the panel, but looks like I was beaten to it.
Anyway, I have video footage of some of the panel, namely Brina and Colleen's voice samples for Chopper and Luffy. I'll youtube them tomorrow, I'm too exhausted right now. I will say that Chopper's new voice is fantastic. Luffy's… sounds more or less the same. We'll have to wait and see there. I've got faith, she's very enthusiastic.
-
@The:

Uh-oh. Set fail for Dub Piece.
But seriously, advanced thanks for the youtubing.

Well, that isn't THAT bad a thing really. I mean remember we're still getting the better script and voice directing. As it's been said many MANY times before, the problem with the 4kids dub was never SOLELY the voice actors but the script and directing.
As long as Colleen can pull of serious emotion and doesn't have that annoying laugh 4Kids Luffy did, I'm cool with it.
And same here, I'm really anxious to see this video, so thanks in advance!
-
Didn't anyone ask about TV broadcast attack names, confirmation on the Ace/Smoker issue, confirmation that the dub is AIRING in August, or everything else we've been dieing to know?
I'm pretty sure that when they said they're keeping 4kids' name changes in the dub broadcast for continuity, they mean Ace and Smoker too.
And yeah, Kirb said he thought Colleen's voice was similar to Erica's too. But the thing is, I never had any problem with her voice, it was her acting that stunk. -

Pretty much how I feel too. I mean her screaming and shit were ear shattering.

T'was Sarcasm my good sir.

Here's the clip with Briana and Colleen giving their samples.

Here's the clip with Briana and Colleen giving their samples.
That was pretty good! I could hear Briana just fine, but I'm not totally sure about Colleen. Was Colleen the one that said "Heheheh, we're gonna go flying!"?
-
@Mikey:

Yeah that's her. (Kudos for whoever uploaded that, it has way better audio than my vid) If nobody else uploads it, she also says, "I'm gonna be King of the Pirates " later.
EDIT:
Beaten to it. -
…she sounds nearly the same when saying that.
However with the other line she gives off the vibe of Luffy's old voice but added with Laura Bailey's Shin Chan, which is a good thing.
Chopper is fantastic. I love what Funi is doing already.
-

EDIT:
Beaten to it.Wow, that was great! Kinda sounds like Bella still, but I bet she can pull it off a lot better than her.
-
They both sound great in my opinion. That all I care about. ^_^
-
Did anyone else catch the "big or small" part? I guess she's gonna do Chopper's bigger forms too.
I'm not too excited about Luffy's voice now. I was hopping more for her "Beet" voice, that I heard on the "Samples" video.
-
They sound fine.
The problem with Luffy's 4kids dub was acting and that fucking annoying laugh. -
Did anyone else catch the "big or small" part? I guess she's gonna do Chopper's bigger forms too.
It was pretty much confirmed that Chopper's voice will stay the same in his different forms.
-
Kind of disappointed with Luffy's voice… I know that they aren't going to just imitate the Japanese voices but Luffy's Japanese voice was so perfect. Colleen's makes me think of any of the kids from Dragonball Z. It still sounds too deep to me, a bit throaty, like a lot of female voice actors sound when doing young boy voices. I'll just wait and see how it sounds when actually doing the voice in the show.
-
Brina's Chopper sounds really cute! I think she'll be better than Lisa Ortiz, who was one of the better sounding Straw Hats in the 4Kids dub. Colleen does a great job as Luffy. Her acting sounds alot better than Erica.
-
The samples sounded very good, but I'll reserve judgment until I see a full episode. Colleen's Luffy sounds good, but the "I'm gonna be King of the Pirates!" line sounded a little too close to Erica's delivery, but there's something different about it… I'm not sure how to put it, but Colleen delivered it with such force that it somehow felt...... better!
Brina won me over as Chopper, though I must admit that Lisa Ortiz was pretty good when she started out, because I liked Chopper's voice better when he was nasally. Also, 4Kids actually kept Chopper's denial/happy dance gags in that arc, which made it even better. However, at the beginning of the Alabasta arc, Chopper lost the nasal squeak. As a result, he began spouting the same high-pitched, nagging, preteen girl voice that Lisa is notorious for using in her other roles!
-
As long as Ms. Colleen doesn't YELL ALL OF HER LINES LIKE THIS SIMILAR TO A CERTAIN 4KIDS DUB ACTOR, THEN EVERYTHING WILL BE FINE. Heh heh, Brina's Chopper was great. "What's a sacrifice?"
-
Chopper sounds adorable ^^
We still need to hear how Luffy will sound when he's SERIOUS. But when Colleen said "we're gonna go flying", the type of attitude she had was already much closer to Luffy than Erica ever did.
Luffy speaking English in my own head never sounds so scratchy (and neither does he in Japanese) but what can you do. -
Luffy's voice isn't bad. It does sound like the 4Kids version, but that actress couldn't depict emotion. She always sounded the same. Angry voice = Excited Voice.
-
Not loving Colleen as Luffy. I agree with the 'scratchy' complaint above. Luffy's voice is too smooth for that kind of portrayal.
-
Holy crap I have fallen in love with Chopper's voice! It's so adorable! X3
Luffy… sounds exactly the same, but that "I'm gonna' be king of the pirates!" line sounded... better, I dunno. Is it better, or am I just biased because it's not the 4Kids dub, mur? XD;
-
Luffy's voice is too smooth for that kind of portrayal.
Luffy's Japanese voice was nothing near smooth. It was scratchy at points, just not AS scratchy.
-
Luffy sounds the same but with good acting. That's gonna be hard to get used to. As long as the happy yelling and angry yelling sound different I think we'll be okay.
Chopper is excellent… I don't remember him saying What's a sacrifice... but that's okay. I still can't wait for this.
-
Wow Chopper sounds so adorable! I hope she can pull off his transformation voice though. And Luffy's got the same kind of voice he had with 4kids, a girl but kinda gruff like Ash Ketchum like…. Hopefully the acting will be better.
-
Chopper is excellent… I don't remember him saying What's a sacrifice... but that's okay. I still can't wait for this.
When they were on the Sacrificial Altar in Skypeia. Chopper asks the others "What's sacrifice?" and upon hearing what it is he feels relieved and thought they were going to get "boiled alive," but then goes back to panicking once he hears it might pretty much be the same thing.
-
I gotta be honest, at first I was a bit skeptical on Luffy's voice. But just to compare it, I went back and watched a "I'm gonna be king of the pirates!!" clip by the 4kids va on youtube.
I like colleen's luffy a lot better now. That and I can't really judge a character's voice off of two lines.
-
@The:
Yeah that's her. (Kudos for whoever uploaded that, it has way better audio than my vid)
Thaaaaaaank you!
-
Brina as Chopper: What's a sacrifice?
Haha, hilarious. It sounds good so far. Just keep in mind that, for those who don't like it, they will probably sound better with a good voice director and script. That there was just the voice actors improving their lines, given some of it sounds like it was based on experience with the dub so far.
-
Chopper sounds adorable!
Luffy sounds quite similiar to the 4Kids voice, but like everyone else said there's something about Coleen's delivery that makes it sound better. And yeah, the 4Kids voices wouldn't be nearly as awful if they had better direction and scripts, so this is good with me.
And another thing to keep in mind is that voice actors on long running series usually get more comfortable as time goes on, and their voices will eventually sound somewhat different and usually ALOT better. (funilly enough, the One Piece 4kids actors actually got worse as time went on)
I hope we get some news on supporting characters soon. I'm dying to know who's going ot play Wiper, Eneru, and for some reason Satori's voice has been on my mind lately.
-
I agree Brina made Chopper even more cuter. xD Yeah, I can't wait for this to air now. Since I really want to know how some of the supporting cast will sound like. hehe
-
Hey all!
Just got back from Otakon, it was a blast. I read most of the pages I've missed in the thread, and thanks CD for relaying the news. Couple other things worth mentioning:
-I spoke to Chris Bevins quite a bit throughout the weekend. I've known who he is for a while but never met him in person 'til this con…and he already knew who I was. I shit you not. Anyways, he mentioned that some of the other directors on the show in addition to him and Mike will be Caitlin Glass (who directs Suzuka and Case Closed) and Zach Bolton (who directs Shin-chan and Negima!). They're splitting up different batches of episodes between each other, kinda scattered around, but all working diligently since there're obviously a LOT of episodes. Also Chris will be playing Lafitte from the Blackbeard pirates, along with someone else that he wasn't allowed to mention.
-I love Brina Palencia to freaking DEATH. Everyone in the cast themselves agree between each other that she's their favorite voice among the strawhats, and as I'm sure you've seen from the couple videos put up so far that she's quite taken with the role so far and she's gonna do great. Also when someone mentioned Chopper's little "problem" where he doesn't know how to accept human compliments and curses people out, she was like "...THAT'S. AWESOME." I actually asked her later that same day at the Uncut panel to do her best and longest interpretation of that...funny. Funny. Shit...and no there will never be a video of that moment, ever.
-Colleen'll take a little getting used to by people I think, but it'll be okay. As guessed and described already, Luffy's new voice is pretty similiar to the 4Kids version, minus the "shittiness". He's actually pretty funny as you can tell from the "I WANNA FLY" one...she's also totally using "GUM GUUUUM @#$%!!" on Mike during a recording session someday just to screw with him. Totally taking credit for that right here.
-Eneru will NOT be a God on Cartoon Network, as there's a specific rule about from X amount of time during the day up until X'O clock, "there is no god" as Chris comedically exclaimed. "Sky Lord" wasn't confirmed, but I'm guessing that might be the case. I'm holding out for it simply for lulz value.
-No Hulk Hogan jokes oddly enough, but after my friend Greg asked the question about if Franky's VA had been picked out, I think it was Brina who made a joke about Paris Hilton playing him XD;
-Colleen was eating the shit outta the fact that everyone in that giant room was expressing how much they HATE 4Kids. "You hate them! You REALLY hate them!" and yeah, she and Brina were pretty...appauled, when they heard about the "skin-toning" on some characters, like the one Buggy crewmate. FUNimation still maintains a level of "politeness" with 4Kids because they distribute the TMNT DVDs and what-not, but a lot of their new marketting for this dub is "WE ARE NOT 4KIDS", and Chris Bevins can say with curdousy that this will indeed be "a good dub", and as far as I'm concerned, anything that he and Mike McFarland work out turns out to be pure gold.
-I'm getting more and more confident that these guys absolutely KNOW what they're doing. I know plenty of people are still concerned, but let's hold out a little more and I think you'll all be surprised. I think when they launch their new OP site, there'll be some comparison clips between the original Japanese, the 4Kids, and the FUNimation versions of the show to show people that they've got something new, and good on their hands. Dunno when that'll happen, but expect good things in the future.
-Lastly, I can't 100% confirm this, but I THINK they might be doing Unlimited Adventure. Don't hold out for that one, since the response was a little sketchy, but it IS a possibility.
That's all I got off the top of my head, but I'm sure the full panel'll be up somewhere on the YooTubb.
-
Thanks for all the information, Kirbopher. I'm still sort of confused about the One Piece panel… I mean, unless I've been informed incorrectly, I thought it was two hours long. I just find it odd that not that much happened in two hours. I'll just wait for the full panel to be uploaded on Youtube, I suppose.
Colleen's voice will take some getting used to, but it's not horrible. Also, I know she can act, which already makes her vastly superior to the 4kids actress for Luffy.
-
Heso!
All of that info sounded intersting. I wanted to point out to everyone that if Colleen sounded a little off she did say that she had been sick. So she might not have had time to get completely better. Colleen and Brina where on stage with bad mikes so I am sure that the in studio any problems with the audio can be perfected.
Now with that said I think that Colleen is going to do great. She has shown that she is going to give Luffy a lot of energy and life. So that is already a wonderful improvement.
Now to Brina I must say that I can't wait to hear her as Chopper. I love that sacrifice line. It is just so cute and serious at the same time. I bet it will be even better in context.
I think that the poor Funimation reps and VAs will have to get kind of used to the bitter feelings that fans have toward 4Kids. I mean 4Kids did a bad job with One Piece and keep it at that. I think that after Funimation's dub comes out we can start to feel better and focus on the new dub instead of 4Kids sort of dub.
I can not wait to hear the other VAs. I am really looking forward to hearing Eric Vale and Sonny Strait as well as the others.
-
OK, I was originally punching this all up the night before, but it was late, and I was quite tired, some of the things about the panel may have already been mentioned…..
I'd just like to get the most disappointing news out of the way first, that being that there weren't any premieres of the new dub. They wanted to show it, intended to show it, but couldn't show it. I tell you a little more about it later on.
For the most part, alot of the information that they talked about regarding the release and broadcast was probably the same stuff that we've been following on the Internet and Anime Expo with a few more fleshed out tidbits of info. But the meat of the panel was in the Q&A. For one thing, Sanji keeping the lollipop was brought up, they said never to quote them on what would be edited or not for the TV broadcast and that Cartoon Network might go with the route of a filtered stick or something like that. Its all in Cartoon Network's hands. But of course NOTHING will be changed in the uncut DVD releases.
Another interesting question that was asked was about the process of how FUNi did the casting, whether they go with a voice that matches the Japanese one or just based on the feeling of a character. They do a little bit of both. It seems that Toei is getting really involved with the FUNi version so, I wouldn't necessarily say they're starting to cast more and more closer to the Japanese voices, but they're seeking some approval from the Toei for voices, among other things. And its not necessarily a bad thing considering that Oda actually gave his approval for the FUNi cast.
Regarding the skipped arcs, Its looking like they'll just follow the original storyline, and that they'll deal with those plot points when they get up to them. For now, they're putting all their energy into the Skypiea arc or "TV Season Three" as they call it. But that doesn't mean they haven't taken a look ahead. In fact, they even had a good idea of who to cast for Franky, but they're just waiting on the approval.
As for opening themes, "We won't be using 'Ya-yo!'". I did ask if they had any plans for English-dubbed openings or whether it was too early to call anything. The answer was the latter.
The videos that I took are on the previous page, but if you don't feel like skimming, then heres something for all you lazy bastards:
Both Colleen and Brina are VERY enthusiastic about they're roles. At one point someone asked if they're were going to keep how Chopper insults whoever compliments/flatters him, and Brina responded with "He cusses people out!? That is awesome!"Another question was brought up about the 'approval' process (Ginny was the one who asked the question, I believe). To sum it up, basically for any localization, theres a certain amount of approval that Toei has to give first. This is when they brought up the big ol' scary list that Mato has been talking about (BTW Mato, if you're reading this, someone gave you a nice shout out at the panel). Toei does have a say in how they want to see things localized, if you all remember that "G.Zass" and "Mantora" business from a few months ago. Fortunately, for the stuff we disagree with, they have been using fan opinions and message boards like this one to prove their points. Thats what I can recall by memory, although I'm sure I'm missing a few things.
Those are some of the big things I can recall from this panel, I just hit the "preview post" button, and it looks like Kirbopher covered alot of stuff as well. Twas a very fun panel .
Oh, and for those that are wondering, I asked a question in the FUNimation Industry Panel on Friday about if there were any plans to release One Piece or any of their newer series on Blu-Ray, Adam said that they were going to announce their Blu-ray stuff at ComicCon.
-
Remember, about Luffy's voice, we've only heard about 2 or 3 lines. So when they finally air an entire episode, I think it will be fantastic. Chopper sounds great, Luffy's sounds about the same as the 4kids version, but my complaint with Luffy's voice was never the..uh.."voice" but the acting. So I think it'll be great.
(At least this isn't Naruto, and there would be 5 pages of death threats from 2 lines alone..)
-
Well Chris Bevins already sounded like he was WELL aware of the hate towards the previous dub, but Colleen and Brina were just brought in and told that the show was a big deal.
The reason not a lot happened, sadly, was because people asked prettymuch…like, everything we already knew from Justin at the press release and at AnimeExpo, so I have no freakin' clue...that, and they weren't ALLOWED to talk about a whole lot, so yeah :/ They did say that as time goes on and certain characters get closer and closer to showing up on the broadcast of their first episode, other supporting character VAs will be revealed. I think they said they were excited about Shanks' choice, actually...
EDIT: Yeah, I was happy for the shout-out to Clyde, but I think when the guy said "Mato" they had no idea what the hell he was talking about, since none of them go to this forum. I'm sure he himself'll appreciate it though.
-
So if they are already thinking about Franky… and there are rumors of the Wii game coming out here.... they seem to fit together as they are ways away from Franky.
-

But of course. The 4Kids Luffy had the right kind of voice, but the main problem is how he always sounded so happy (well, at least to me) all the time. Like, when he was fighting Crocodile, he was all like "I'M GONNA BEAT YOU UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!" If he could've actually sounded SERIOUS, and not like it was a game, then it would've been good.
Anyway, seeing as both of their voices sound the same, I guess that kind of voice is the closest we'll get to the Japanese Luffy anyway.
-

That's a shame, because his lines near the end of Skypiea like, "God is fear," will sound silly with some other title (like on that one game…"Sky Lord is fear"...Pfft). I wonder if they can just drop the "Sky" and just of "Lord," which would be close enough to "God" for me.

Filtered stick? Like an unlit cigarette?
If only they could keep the cigarette uneditted and SAY it's one of those candy cigarettes (you know…The ones that taste like chalk...)
Did anyone ask the exact date of the first airing (I think this question will probably be answered in "It wasn't confirmed but I thought I'd ask just to make sure)?
Chopper's voice does indeed sounded excellent. If someone could get the clip from that episode and dub it with her line, it'd seem like a perfect match.
All-in-all, this was indeed some good news; the only bad thing is it's making me more impatient to see the dub on CN. xD
-
Filtered stick? Like an unlit cigarette?
Pretty much, they also mentioned the policy on TV (Not sure whether its a CN or an FCC thing) that cigars and pipes were OK as long as they weren't shown in use. Hence, erased smoke, and mention of alcohol, but no actual drinking. Its kinda weird, but they did bring up how Cartoon Network was getting a little more mature about that stuff and the guys doing the editing are trying to get away with as much as possible.

I asked Lance around the end of the panel, I brought up the speculation of mid-August but he said they didn't have an exact date. However, he did say it was "really close [as in coming soon to airing]".
-
@TakinawaTonfa-san:

I know this really has nothing to do with One Piece, but doesn't Asuma from Naruto smoke a cigarette?…I thought I saw the dub keep that in. (Even though it's a different situation, since Sanji's a main character)
-

Asuma does have a cigarette, yes, but they erased the smoke and light from it.
-
(BTW Mato, if you're reading this, someone gave you a nice shout out at the panel)
That was me. ;P I was the one Chris "caught red-handed".
-
Hmmm, so what alternatives would be good for "God"? (Oh, and I guess this info is sort of confirmation that they're going with "Eneru" instead of "Enel". Poop.)
Some I can come up with are: Diety, Overlord, Lightning Incarnate, Supreme Ruler, The Lord, "Kami" (a nice side-step).
-
I'm fine with Lord because it's the same as God,Chopper's and Luffy's new voices are great
-
I really hope Colleen can pull this off.
From what I've heard so far–I just wanna' punch her. I really do.Brina's voice is cute--but I dunno'...It's a bit high-pitched. ._.;;;
