Check out this nice remix I found on youtube:

Oh come on, if you're gonna post a Sonic3/MJ mashup, do it right :D
-
o hai Mario and Sonic at the London Olympic Games
-
2D was you eating a delicious snocone
Ohey whats up.
New vid.
Wow, I thought the last sonic game I played (Secret Rings) was unnecessarily fast, but goddamn… my eyes couldn't keep up with that. Literally. (Referring to the 3D portion)
And there was a Green Hill Stage in SA2? And I didn't know about it? That's it, my childhood is incomplete.
@Cyan:
City Escape has the distinction of having the only decent Crush 40 song.
That wasn't Crush 40.

To unlock it you have to get all the emblems in the game. Fun right?
-
No Sonic Mashup is complete without this gem!
-
here are some bel air ones.
they definitely aren't as good as the previous videos on this page, but are fun in their own right.[hide]

Yeah I didn't have the attention span to do that.
-
@Badass:
Yeah I didn't have the attention span to do that.
Nor did any sane human being.
You know, when it would be less troublesome to saw off your own leg than fulfill the requirements for an unlockable I think that's when the game designers should know they need to lower their standards.
-
I got all of the emblems except the chao ones. Then I cheated & downloaded as save file.

The Tube will stop at nothing in its quest to destroy franchises.

That game play trailer just showed much of the same problems with modern Sonic. I mean the level desgins isn't really all that impressive, and its way too fast AND I wanted some good platforming at least. Its exactly the type of homage level that Unleashed would have done if a 3d version of the Green Hill was available in it, which irks me.
-
I couldn't find a single alternate path.
-
There's at least two seconds of gameplay among the entire course where you can go low instead of high if you completely mess up and fall off the autorail, where you'd then have to jump up to get back on the course.
-
I do wonder why Sonic Team keeps doing those kinds of levels, despite promising to change them before showing us any gameplay.

In the university computer lab watching this.
Dead serious: I fell asleep. I was seriously that bored watching it.
-

You know something really ironic that I just realized? The new Sonic games are disgustingly linear, but the old Sonic games were extremely non-linear. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that they were even less linear than Mario games. With Mario games you could at least get a pretty good layout of the level in your mind, but the old Sonic game levels had so many layers and alternate routes that it was virtually impossible to get a proper layout in your mind and it was almost impossible to take the same route twice.
That was one of Sonic's greatest strengths and now the developers have sacrificed that for "Speed."
-
To be fair, Unleashed and Colors at least had many alternate paths. Colors was especially good about multiple paths and hidden secrets. So it is not the engine, which is perfectly capable of giving us some semblance of exploration.

Still haven't played Colors.
Unleashed? Well, I've still only played the Wii version, but I guess so. But if you're talking about the Werehog stages, forget it, because those levels had a shit-ton of other problems.
-
No. I'm referring to the actual Day levels. They certainly weren't Genesis Sonic level, but there were multiple paths a player could take in each level.
-
Sonic Unleashed 2. Now to wait for the Classic Sonic part to be actually Sonic 4 Episode 2 and we'll be officially doomed.

At first when I saw this vid I was like Oooh, das fx! But then after reading your comments I realized you guys are right, it's so.. linear. Although to be fair, maybe this is one of the first stages?
I'm not familiar with new Sonic games, are there any nowadays that improve upon the genesis days?
I've seen a few vids of terrible new sonic games before, can't remember the names, but there's one with this really annoying voice that keeps talking through the game that makes you want to shoot yourself :ninja:
-

If by "improve" you mean "become worse and worse and lose all gameplay" then… yes.
-
Aw :( That's too bad.
That game looks ridiculously easy. I guess they're using the strategy of "dumbing down the gameplay to bring in a new generation of sonic fans!" well, I was like 8 or 9 and I was playing the original sonics quite comfortably, so I dunno what they're thinking.
Did they have to compromise gameplay to spend more money and time on 3d effects? Do we really need to be wowed by shiny effects every nanosecond?

They don't HAVE to compromise gameplay. They just apparently want to.

shakes head dunno why they haven't taken note of the roaring success of the new SMB for DS.
It's like myself, I consider myself a retro gamer. Anything that brings back the glory of the old times with the new-aged added flavour is what i'll seriously consider buying, and I don't have money for games nowadays o_o. If they wanna cash in on people like me, they're gonna have to try harder :o

Welcome to 2006.

Welcome to 2006.
I did say i'm not familiar with newer games o_o I don't have oodles of spare cash to spend on new consoles and games, haven't for years, otherwise I wouldn't be asking these questions.
-
Cancelled Sonic games, anyone?
This was apparently to be released for the X-Box, and titled Sonic Extreme.
I think Extreme and all variations are cursed, Sonic Team.
-
have sonic team worked on any kind of game with the word "sonic" in it in the last fifteen years that they actually expected to be fun.

Supposedly Sonic X-Treme for the Saturn.
But given it's terrible development problems (i.e. management wars) and the main guy on the staff nearly dying as a result of working too hard…yeah...
-
Sonic X-Treme looked horrible. Honestly, if Sonic X-Treme had come out, Sonic would have been dead faster :O
-
The NiGHTS engine one may have been ok. The fisheye one obviously wasn't going anywhere.
-
I've never had a complaint for 'why is Sonic driving a car when he's faster than the speed of sound' bullshit, but….
!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Isn't that from the new Sonic and Mario at Olympics game?
And yes, I'm sorry if I just ruined it for you.
-
No. I know it is.
It's just the funniest thing ever to see a blue hedgehog riding on top of a horse.
-

Okay, cool. As long as we understand he's not riding to go fast, but because he's in a horse-riding competition.
And yes, it's goofy as hell.
-
Wait till you see the cutscene.
-
They should've made all the Sonic characters ride zombie horses.

He died before he said that. :P I still laughed though "This part shows an important part of the team's design philoaophy" Player dies "… Which is not to kill players... :ninja:"
Another thing I kind of liked, but didn't notice while watching was this:
Found this on another forum. It's nothing special, but I do like this small detail. -
"This here is something new" he says of the giant fish following behind you as you auto-rail. Nevermind that they've had that since the whale in Sonic Adventure.
"And here it briefly switches to 2-D in order to mix up the gameplay."
To be fair, he's not saying "And not killing you is a special feature"… he was about to say "the fish following you is a special feature" and then he died.
Sigh.
And then for the 2-D stages "We're bringing back the classic stages, but the level design is a completely new design." So... they'll look familiar, but not play familiar. Great.
Also he says Green Hill is from Sonic 2.
I realize "Green Hill" and "Emerald Hill" are very similar in name, theme, and design, and they clearly merged the two anyway, since the corkscrew loops ARE from Sonic 2.... so we knew there was some redesign going on, but...
-

He meant new to Green Hill.
-
-
@RobbyBevard:
Which was from Sonic 2, apparently.
He didn't say that either. He said the gameplay was based on Sonic 2 because the Spindash was in it.
-
You're interpreting what he said very differently than I did.
-
His words were "The gameplay you are seeing here is, again, based on the Sonic 2 era, because the Spindash is in there"
-
His words were "The gameplay you are seeing here is, again, based on the Sonic 2 era, because the Spindash is in there"
Fair enough. I heard it as "The gameplay you are seeing here is, I guess, based on Sonic 2 era because the Spindash is in there."
The difference between "again" and "I guess" makes a huge difference in the context of everything else in that statement.
Still remains to be seen what they do with any levels that aren't the first one. And the 3-D section still looks terrible… especially when he's going on about the good things about the 2-D classic era, showing that yes, they DO understand what made it good. Exploring, multiple paths, higher routes being more rewarding, platforming, etc. etc.
