Ahem, back on the topic of The Princess and the Frog, here's one more last minute preview clip from the movie that I thought I'd share, featuring the intro of Louis. I found it to be surprisingly quite funny.

"It's like my buddy Timon always says: you got to put your behind in your past."
"No, no no. Amateur. Sit down before you hurt yourself. It's "You got to put your past behind you." -
Nooo…no more scenes, I want to be surprised. Since there are so few surprises left.
I'm curious how merchandising for the film will go. True story, Walmart told Disney that they don't think they can sell toys for the film because black families don't buy toys for their kids.
-
As long as I don't know what happens to the villain in the end. That's the one spoiler I guard above all else.
Also I would like to thank this thread for reminding me of animated movies I've forgotten about, like "We're Back!", "The Secret of Nihm", and "Little Nemo". Just thought I'd say that.
-
There's a thread somewhere for non-disney animated movies…some fairly obscure stuff in there.
-
Just saw it and I really liked it. The characters were well done and the story and pace were upbeat. In movie, the music was very toe-tapping and catchy. I also LOVED Charlotte. She was spoiled and hyper, but still had a sweet heart and very cute way of acting.
On a related note, I wonder if there's a chance that the Muppet Frog Prince will get a dvd release to ride on Princess and the Frog's bandwagon. I had a vhs of it when I was little and watched it all the time, but I don't know what happened to it and have never been able to find a copy. It would be nice to see it again, even just for nostalgia.

This is an inaccurate portrayal of Jazz musicians! >:(
Anyone who can jam like that (be they man, woman, or gator) would be welcome in any concert.
Poor Louis.

No, I was told this directly by a guy that works for Disney's toy making department.

I've officially found my favorite character.
Very much looking forward to this part in the movie now :D -

My God! They were shooting at him!
That's pretty twisted for a Disney move!
I can already tell I'm going to enjoy this. Also, his shifty eye face was awesome.

No worse than chasing after a crab with a meat cleaver :D

Meh. He could have made a nice crab ragoon.
-
Just got back from the movie. It was nooooot bad.
! There was a huge presence of voodoo and even the death of a beloved supporting character, so little kids/easily freaked people may not like it as much. Honestly, I thought they handled the death of Ray quite well, especially for it being a murder. The jabs at the Creole were kind of cute… even Two Fingers was amusing.
Overall, I'd give it a B+.

Ever had fried gator? Delicious! Tastes like chicken but with a sweet tang.

This would be a good time to remind everyone that sees the movie to PUT DETAILED REVIEWS BEHIND SPOILER TAGS. (thank you, cactusmomma). I do NOT want to be spoiled any more than I already have (I've started to guess some plot points, and I'm not happy that I did).
I'm seeing this Sunday. Can't wait.

How awesome was this movie?
Let's consult the awesome meter:
! This movie had everything I was hoping for and more. Every musical number was awesome, from Tiara's artistic daydream to the Cajun firefly's follow the leader, to the expectedly awesome Facilier's 'Friends on the Other Side'. There were at least a dozen times were I genuinely laughed out loud, and that is rare for me (Lewis the Gator's flashback about trying to play on a paddleboat- that whole scene was gold) So many other aspects, but I'll leave it at that for now.
-
Just saw it a few hours ago.
Man, I've been waiting eagerly for this since July and I was not disappointed. The art, animation, and voice acting are just wonderful. I really enjoyed the songs too and now I may- no, I will go buy the soundtrack.
! I was kinda shocked when Ray died, it's been quite a while since I've seen a non-villain supporting character die in an animated film. Poor little kids in the front row were crying their little eyes out. (Honestly, I started to tear up myself. ) I also got some really good laughs, like from Louis' flashback (My goodness, I thought I was gonna die from laughter.) to Naveen's first attempt to mince the mushroom. X'D
Anyway, good movie. Very nostalgic. B+/A- for me. And now I want to see it again. -
I just saw it too. This movie is Bitchingly awesome. return of the Disney magic? Hell yes.
If someone can verify whether this movie has or has not been padded with computer animation like say, Treasure planet was so heavily, that would decide for me that this movie was the most drop dead gorgeous piece of 2d animation I've ever seen.
The soundtrack was top notch, and even if you find yourself thinking "didn't we just have a song?" or "this one isn't as good as the one before" it's such a feast for the eyes that you're still extremely entertained.
The characters are great, and I can't express how refreshing it is to have a non-pixar animation relying on something else than pop-culture references for laughs.I have to see it some more to decide where it is on my all times favs list, but all I can say now is that when I walked out that theatre, I was grinning from ear to ear. Thank you Disney, that was great.
-
I saw it earlier, and I'm exhausted to get into detail, but I saw a damn fine movie tonight. Disney really stepped up their game for this, and I want them to do more. Definitely going to see this again.
-
Damn. Seeing all these positive reviews makes me so stoked about seeing it tomorrow. Can't wait :D
-
I saw it tonight and I really enjoyed too. It's 3:20am right now though so I'll save more comments for later :O
-
damn, you guys are so confident. I don't have the balls to see it despite how much I want to, I have to wait for the DVD :(
-
I don't get why we have confidence for seeing this movie. Are you the age of somewhere between 13-19 where all your peers think everything is lame and uncool? Go see this movie already.
-
At any rate, if you're unsure about a movie it's cheaper to see it once in the cinema, rather than being the permanent owner of a more expensive DVD of a movie you have no idea whether you like.
-

yes I am
-
Well that sucks. You have to see this movie one way or another. Go with somebody who takes animation seriously, or is nostalgic about old Disney movies.
-
All right, I just got back from seeing it and it was AWESOME!!!
…well, awesome with a few minor complaints, but still very good and well worth the price of admission. It did sate my appetite for a good wholesome 2-D Disney movie though, and that's all that matters. Anywho...
! Well, what can I say? The animation was fantastic, the story was fantastic, and the songs and characters…well, I think that's where we may have hit a few road bumps.
! The Songs: They were good. I especially liked "Friends on the Other Side" (natch) and "When We're Human". "Dig a Little Deeper" was good too. But I dunno. Maybe I need to hear them again, but the rest just seemed above average at best.
! Now as for the characters.
! Tiana: A well-developed Disney princess. Can't say I relate to her that much, but she was still very appealing. No major complaints.
! Naveen: I really liked this guy. Finally a Disney prince who's not there just to look pretty and save the day at the last minute.
! Dr. Facilier: Now, I had high expectations for this guy, and while I must say he was awesome whenever he was onscreen, he just seemed a little underdeveloped to me, which I found a bit surprising. Mainly I guess it's his motivation. I mean, take another Disney villain for example: Ursula. She got about as much screentime as any other Disney villain (as did Facilier) and while they didn't go into detail we did know what she was after. She was kicked out, wanted revenge, and wanted the Trident so she could rule the seas. What exactly was Facilier's ambition? To take over New Orleans? Like to keep our dreams small don't we? (though I'll admit it is pretty messed up how he was pretty much planning to take the souls of everyone in New Orleans and feed them to those voodoo spirits) But yeah, he was still good and I also must admit his death scene really freaked me out.
! Louis: Great funny supportive character. No complaints.
! Raymond: Poor Ray  I was so not expecting him to die. Even as Louis brought him over as he was dying I was expecting something to come along to save him, but alas. At least he's with Evangeline now. And yeah, he was funny too.
! Mama Odie: Again, a kind of underdeveloped character. Didn't really serve any purpose other than to tell the MCs "Oh, that's not what you really need" and then to provide the last minute save at the end. Wished we could've seen more of her.
! Charlotte: Got an appropriate amount of attention and was a very amusing character. No complaints.
! And all the other characters would good too. Oh, and is it just me, or did anyone else kind of like Tiana and Naveen as frogs more than as humans? Anyway, good movie, definitely gonna buy the DVD. As of now I'd give it an 8/10 or a B, but I'm hoping my opinion of it will get even higher when I rewatch it. -
Hnnnnnng, trying with all my might to resist reading the spoilers ;A;
Hopefully I'll be able to see it either this weekend or the next.
If I see it this weekend, I'll probably have to take my two nieces though :I -
I saw this yesterday morning with my sister and mother. We really enjoyed it. We laughed out loud, we cried… Yeah, it was good. I'd say it was a B+/A- as well. <3 OH GAWD <3
-
sigh Unfortunately, my plans to see it today were cancelled due to unforseen events. D:
I'm hoping to catch it sometime in the next week.
-
Did anyone else spot "Carpet" in the first scene in town? (Does that count as a spoiler?)
-
Technically no, but if you think anything MIGHT be a spoiler, USE A FREAKING SPOILER TAG!!!!
-
If it's little stuff like seeing characters from other movies in it, feel free to share that.
But if it's stuff like plot, you definately should spoiler tag it :>

facilier was a fucking badass and i would pay a dollar just to go the the theater and sit through his musical number
edit: my review from npc
saw it in EXTREME DIGITAL
! it was good, but nothing was really mindblowing outside of the fucking villian being amazing and incredible and eye sex
! in the best possible way, it feels like they were trying so hard just to make an average grade disney classic. they took pages from everything… Facilier is basically ursula, what with the 'make a deal', transformations, and crazy magic, and the whole scene with the white girl marrying the fake "prince" was quoted right out of the little mermaid
! the three swamp hillbillies were classic warner bros humor, the gator in the swamp was Baloo (jungle book), and the transformation at the end was Beauty and the Beast
! Probably the only thing I think I can safely say I didn't really like was the prince's fatso servant guy. there was one in Enchanted and i cant say i really liked either4.5 / 5
-facilier is the best disney villian ever
-i wish they had remained human a bit longer
-animation was excellent in every aspect
-storywise, it was good, but i hope they take a few more chances next timei probably need to watch this again so i can really digest it, but that's IMO after one viewing.
-
I just saw this movie today, it was great!
-
I have to agree with Taboo about Facilier. He was awesome. I was surprised to hear Keith David playing him, and the fact that Keith David can sing. Facilier is definitely one of my favorite Disney villains.
-
I agree with you guys, Dr. Facilier is the best Disney villain, hands down.
Did anyone else spot "Carpet" in the first scene in town? (Does that count as a spoiler?)
I did! Strange, I don't usually notice those things until someone points them out.
-
Phew! Just got back from seeing it. AWESOME! Okay, not Beauty and the Beast awesome, but AWESOME!
Spoilery review ahead:
! There really is no complaint to be had about the animation. They said they were bringing their A-game, they brought their A-game.
! Characters: Disney did a really good job. There was no character I hated or regretted seeing on screen.
Louis the Alligator I was afraid would be really annoying from what the previews showed, but he surprised me by being genuinely funny. He's not the strongest side I could have asked for, but he held his own very well. And yes, his little flashback was gold.
Ray, oh RAY. Damn you Disney. I didn't cry, but I was very choked up. But I think if I didn't already suspect a character death from things I had heard, I probably WOULD have cried. sigh If he had lived he'd be another Jiminy Cricket, he was that much of a sweetheart. As it is, he'll be loved. But it'll be hard to think of him without being sad. But hey, he got Evangeline, didn't he?
Tiana was a very solid heroine. And I think Anika Noni Rose's performance was really crucial for her character. Not only for her singing (fabulous!), but her general attitude. A lesser actress would have made Tiana a lot more bland.
Naveen was LOVE. He's the first Disney prince since The Beast that I truly loved. He had, of all things, a PERSONALITY! And a really fun one. And I was getting warm fuzzies when he started to fall for Tiana, it was adorable. Kudos to Bruno Campos.
Dr. Facillier is pretty much what you'd expect. Damn cool. I agree that he's a tad underdeveloped, but hey, he's a showman, and that's what he did best. Be dramatic. Keith David was obviously having a lot of fun.
All the other characters were really solid. Mama Odie was fun, Tiana's parents and Big Daddy were believable, but Charlotte kinda stole the show. She was just so out there that you can't hate her, and I like how Disney DIDN'T try and make her despicable, she's just a ditz.
Story-wise, I really liked how they played out the romance. It's fairy tale romance, yes, but hey, at least they had to learn to love each other first. You can easily settle into it once it starts developing. This is the kind of love story I'd like to see more often. (screw you, Twilight! This is how it's done!!) The plot was a little thin, but this is more of a character study. I did like the time crunch at the end though, kept things exciting.
The music was also solid, but I could see what the reviewers were saying. It's all great toe-tapping stuff in context, but it lacked the memorability of the true Disney classics. I won't be humming it ala "Be Our Guest" or "Under the Sea." And I was surprised to see, aside from "When We're Human" how SHORT the numbers were! They ended just as I was really getting into them, a really lamentable flaw. But hey, they work.
If there's one big flaw to this movie it's that it felt a bit rushed. I felt like things were pushed at too fast a pace and didn't give the audience enough time to soak things in. A little more restraint would have done wonders. Tiana's dad, for example, I think a funeral scene or something would have been more impacting than just a picture. (and no kid is going to get that he's in WWI gear)
What ultimately bought me though was the ending. That KISS, it was great. Disney really knows how to draw a kiss, I practically melted. And the final shot of Tiana and Naveen dancing on the roof caught me and stuck in my mind. I'm still thinking of it. So the movie ended on a bang, for me.
General Consensus: It's pretty much what people have been saying. Not the next coming of The Little Mermaid, but a very solid, very REWARDING Disney film. And a good sign of things to come, if they stick to this direction. Snow Queen, please! One thing I love about this movie is that it was really really funny WITHOUT relying on pop-culture references. It didn't need them, at all. And it's proof why this sort of traditional animation/storytelling is so valuable. Future generations can watch and laugh/understand this without having to do homework before hand. Great physical humor.
I'm definitely going to see it again. I've had the wow factor, now I want to see it again to let things soak in and to relish it.
-

I pointed this out to my friends. I think it made this movie much more respectable since it stayed within its own universe and didn't rely on cheap laughs.
-
I haven't seen it (yet), so I must ask: I believe you guys when you say this Facilier is awesome, but about his musical number…is it better than Scar's 'Be Prepared'?
Because if it is, I might have to make a will before entering the theater.
You know, in case my head explodes.EDIT: Might as well ask another thing: As far as pop culture references go, are you talking about movies like Shrek, movies like Madagascar, or both? Personally, I think there's a difference between fairy tales being parodied and modernized (Shrek) and those movies that just plain suck (why is there a Madagascar 2?)
-
Dreamworks movies are notorious for it. Disney movies have had their share too. Aladdin has a lot, but I enjoyed them.
Faciler's number better than scars? I think so. Better song and animation.
