I believe that the worst Final Fantasy ever made had to have been Chocobo Tales. I would never spend any money just to play as a stupid chocobo. The only chocobos that were cool were the Brown Chocobos in FF12. Also FF7 Dirge of Cerberus was also pretty boring. It was just a boring run and gun, beat em up shoot em up type of game. Anyway I cant wait for FF13 to come out that looks like a promising game.

Final Fantasy VII.

Sorry. I didnt know about the Dissidia thread. If there are any other final fantastys that you dont please post them and why you dont like them.

Final Fantasy 12 sucked balls
-
Lol, you suck balls.
ITT: Screw opinions.
But honestly, FFXII is pure greatness.
-
The worst Final Fantasy is FF II for the NES. Broken experience system, poor pacing, and bland characters. Whatever interesting pieces there are to the storyline are moot because the game is such a chore to play.
-
The final fantasy 3 remake for DS was boring and kinda too hard with almost no save points and it required you too grind too much.
I also didn't think FF12 was so great. Most characters were boring and the system was too complicated, I remember taking a break for for completing Okami(a great great game) then when I came back to FF12 I forgot most of it and I don't really feel for starting over all again.
-
Crystal Chronicles.
the only bad FF in the series.Reason:a lot of things.

Yeah, I vote for a merger, no offense to Tsubuki at all.

Pretty much, any system that forces you to waste magic or attack your own party just to raise their hit points has something really wrong with it.
Which as I said before, is a Goddamn shame because that development system sounds like a really awesome idea on paper. Granted, the remakes on the PS1 and P do a better job of balancing out the system and making the game a little more playable, but its still pretty much the black sheep of the entire franchise.
They should try to implement that development system again with some combination of experience points from battle as well.
@Buuhan:
haha, How old exactly were you when you played VII?
-
I played FF III DS after XII, and III had 10 times more FF-feel in the first hour than XII had in it's 90 hour field trek extravaganza.
XII Is a good game, but a shoddy Final Fantasy. -

Agreed on all points except the bland characters part. The game at least has a decent, if not very dark story and the first Final Fantasy game to give characters personalities. If you want bland, try III for the Famicom.
I would also suggest using the cancel trick to build up your characters' skill levels (for Frioniel, Maria, and Guy only! Forget the fourth members of your party as the trick won't work for them…especially Leon) as that is pretty much the only way you should be building up your levels.
Trivia time: Final Fantasy II only had one system programmer for the whole game. A guy named "Nasir" (who may be Japanese or Arabic) which would probably explain why the game is so fucked up in the first place.

VI & IX

Sandai Mera the thread is Worst
Worse not best

Okay then VI I choose you.
-
I have to say that I enjoyed playing FF12 becaused I liked the rare hunts, marks, and the optional bosses and espers. I didnt like Vaan though because he wasn't cool.
-
I loved XII, there was a lot of stuff to do in the game AND it was really easy to break away from the main quest to do other stuff and come back. As for the main poster boy, Vaan, he really wasn't as obnoxious as I was expecting.
In terms of spin-offs, Mystic Quest was pretty bad unless it was your first RPG ever.
-
@Sandai:
Okay then VI I choose you.
LIES LIES your post is made of LIES! 6 is one of the best out there. Great charicters. great story. great music. great graphics. (for the time) I can play that one over and over.
The battle system is easy and convenient, for 6 as well. I am playing Chrono Cross atm, and although, the battle system is inovative and a neat idea, I litterly fall asleep playing that game. Every time. It makes things so long and boring.
BTW, the guy who writes the stories for FF. (forget his name) FF9 was his personal favorite. :)
-
Do Legends and adventure count?
because they were hard to play, had no leveling, had no storyline, and bad controls,IMO. -

That kind of level-up/experience system lived on in the SaGa series (FF Legends + SaGa in the US). If you want to play a game that does it well, try emulating Romancing SaGa 3 for the Super Famicom
Do Legends and adventure count?
because they were hard to play, had no leveling, had no storyline, and bad controls,IMO.I wouldn't count them. The three Legends games are actually the first three games in the SaGa series, and Adventure is actually the first game in the Seiken Densetsu series (it was remade into Sword of Mana). The US localizers just tacked on the FF label so that they would sell better.
And honestly, I thought that FF Legends II and III were alright, considering that the original GB had zero great RPGs. A couple of decent ones, but nothing like the quality on later handheld systems.
-
I haven't played all the FFs that there are, so I can't really say which was worst, but I will say this:
XII rocks. Period.

actually, although, i wouldn't rank X as one of my favorites, it was good, imo. I liked the story. And The graphics were nice. My complaint with it, is it was more movie than game, and a bit slow paced.
X2 though, was just a big mockery. I refuse to play it. They totally changed Yuna. She was so soft spoken and modest. Now they're all Charlie's Angels. @_@ and too much cleavage to make me take the game seriously.

Mystic Quest, hands down. That game was ridiculous, and there was a part of the game you could even skip with no consequences, the part with the giant tree. I just walked right past it.
Surprised no one's bashing XI. I love the game, but it's like EQ in its addictive level once you start playing. I played it for 6 years till WAR came out.
And how could anyone hate VI? Kefka and Locke alone made that game. All the characters were great.
-
Anyone who hates IX either has no soul, or badly needs to rediscover their inner child.
As for me, well, I wouldn't say I hate them, but III and V just felt like chores to play after a while.
-
2 and 3 for me. I couldn't even get into 2 at all, while 3, like said above, felt like a chore.
XII is amazing~
raises hand for liking X -
Final fantasy XI that's the only i would rate as really bad.
Raises Hand also I liked X not X-2 though, my guess is cause it didn't have auron
-
The Eleventh one.
-
1- It was the original back when RPGs were new, nothing can be held against it, not fair to judge this one against any other standards. Red mage sucked tho, couldn't do any of the REALLY good stuff the white and black could do.
2-Experiance system SUCKED. Probably the worst for that.
3-Job class was fun, but a chore, and the fact that switching jobs hurt you sucked. And the actual story and characters were REALLY generic. . One of the weaker ones. Innovative tho. I haven't played the DS remake, but…
4-Epic story, great characters, and the game kept forcing you to give up characters you liked/abused. One of the best games made, period. And the variety is so great. Sand pits, to the moon, to inside a giant robot. Summoning monsters with Rydia was so amazing at the time too, and actually usefull! I think the DS remake loses a little something with the ability passing, but whatever, still cool.
5-Much BETTER job class system than 3. Lotta fun for that customization, but still the same crappy story and characters. Nice surprise twist part of the way through tho.
6-THE best one. Epicness, music, villains, character with unique moves (and each with their own theme music) , huge world, fantastic graphics for the time, plot, variety of stuff (you ride mechs and fight dinosaurs!) just sheer win. And juuust when you think you're at the end of the game, you find out that you're really only half way. I can't wait till the inevitable 3-D DS remake in 3 years.
Mystic Quest- Made for five year olds. Sucked. Lets move on.
7-Overrated, but at this point, its no longer a game, but a gaming icon of sorts, since ALL the characters, and their themes are memorable and well designed. And theres been nothing since to compare to the astonishment the first time you get to Sephiroth, and his theme music has chorus and vocals, reminding you for the first time, that this Playstation game is on a CD and can do REAL music! (which we take for granted now that disks have been the gaming format for over a decade.) Its near impossible to play now because the at the time insanely amazing graphics are really painful to look at now. Not as good as 6 or 4, but not bad by any means either. It suceeded on almost every level and I enjoyed the materia system. You could make everyone the same, but it was limited and balanced juuust enough you wouldn't want to. I still remember tossing like 20 counter materia on Red XIII and how that made him into an ungodly monster, that was a joy...
(Basically, counter materia stacked, and any one of them could counter an attack. So if someone attacked you, even if you dodged or it did zilch damage, you would then counter 10-12 times in one turn, for 9,999 damage each time if you were leveled. I mnaged to finish off Sephiroth first turn before the music even got to his name)
8-LOVED the junction system. It was so tinkerable and fun and I actually enjoyed stopping to drain mana. First time I played I spent like 7 hours in the training area against T-Rexes and plants before even starting the plot. The random flashbacks where you play as a different set of characters was akward tho, and the ENTIRE last disk just being the final castle is kinda meh. I didn't care much about any of the characters (Seifer fails as a compelling antagonist) , but I remember LOVING the customizing. And I liked Selphie and Zell, and Rinoa's dog. Also loved the main theme, Eyes on Me. Very pretty song. there were certain parts, like specific maes and the train ride that are just cringe inducing on a second play through tho.
9- My personal favorite, even though 6 is the better game. The graphics and character designs and specific jobs for each character and homage to all that had come before... The music wasn't as good as in other games, nor were the character themes, but it was just so much fun to experiance, I loved it. I looove character customization and this game really didnt have that at all, but it did old school RPG perfectly. it reminded me of Dragonball or Lupin the 3rd the whole way through with its sense of FUN, and good story too.
10- The only FF game I never quite finished. It was really pretty, but I didn't like any of the characters, it was more a movie than a game. The "big surprise twists" are obvious really early on, the stupid puzzles in each of the summon chambers sucked (I spent like an hour on one puzzle, only to discover the SIMPLE solution was that there was an orb enbedded elsewhere I just hadn't been seeing) and the ability grid was ASS. It was theoretically possible to customize a character to your liking, but not because everythign was locked off and you had to walk a VERY specific path till pretty much the end of the game. Whats the point of having a customized grid if you have to wait till the end of the game to use it?
X-2- Despite the premise of the outfit changing dynamic, and the story being nonexistant, its really FUN. I came to actually like the characters I couldn't stand in X, the fact that the ENTIRE game was basically minigames kept it fresh throughout, made me like a lot of the random characters because it was ALL about them instead of the end of the world. But mostly, the job class system was AMAZINGLY well done and balanced. Switching job roles in mid fight, rewards for sticking in one class were all incredibly balanced , and I've never had so much fun raising a berserker. The plot was meh, but the characterization and gameplay was great.
11- Online game, different standards. Its not really FF.
12- I liked tthat it was on a smaller scale than previous games and visually it was incredibly pretty, and the real time customized auto-combat dynamic was inovative and good, but it was also a bit too long. The actual main story was like a 20 hour game, but the hunts and reqisite grinding and huge multitude of subquests padded it out a LOT, which was fun, up until a point. I lost track of the story inbetween grinding and doing the optional hunts. I felt bad not doing all the subquests, but they got old around the point the boss monsters started casting invicibility as a regular thing.... Job class grid had the OPPOSITE problem of 10's, in that everyone started in the same place and could go EVERYWHERE, so while everyone might be a little different for a while, they ended up being exactly the same by the end. I think I would have liked it better if it has taken the X/X-2 route. Main plot for the first 20 or 30 hours fo the game, resolve all the big conflicts and character developments, and THEN subquest randomness. Or somethin. but it was just a little TOO big, TOO free for my tastes. It was basically an online game without the online-ness.
They all have their quirks. 4, 6, 9 and X-2 are my favorites, 7 and 8 are pretty great. Mystic Quest, 2 and 10 were the worst, and the rest I didn't hate, but didn't love either. Still, pretty good track record all in all.
-
Well, I've only played about half of the main Final Fantasy games and, out of all the sequels and spinoff series, I think I've only played one: the first Crystal Chronicles.
That being said, out of all the ones I've played, I'd say Final Fantasy II is the worst. Now keep in mind, the version I played was from Dawn of Souls (the compilation of FF I and II), but from what I saw the leveling up and weapon utilization system was whack, the art and graphics were dull and overall it just wasn't very exhilirating. Also, they had this stupid trend going where you stick with the three main characters and have another 4th person join your party at different parts of the game, only to have said person die or drop out of the party for some reason. But yeah, for me it was the worst. And for the heck of it, I'll list all the ones I've played from favorite to least favorite.
1. IV
2. VI (I've only played about halfway through this one, so it might go up to number 1 once I finish it)
3. I
4. XII
5. V
6. III
7. Crystal Chronicles
8. II -

wow. great over view of all the games.
I think, though, where as you don't care about story as much as you care about game play, I'm the opposite. I think this is why you like 8, and I refuse to touch it with a 10 foot pole. For the exact reasons you stated. too much customizing is too tedios for me. I get bored with games that way. and the fact that you didn't even start the main quest for 7 hours; gruu, another bad sign for me. And then there's the charicters, which you said yourself sucks.
You got me interested at looking at 4 again. Some games, I buy, but never have time to really play them. The bad thing about RPG's are that they are not made to put down and pick up a month or 2 later. :\
OH YA! How can I forget about KEFKA! He's my hero <3 <3
Your counter attack story for 7 was amusing.
-
Ill have to say that I enjoyed FF7 because it was a damn good game. I loved the characters, gameplay and GFs. It might be a little old school but Doom Train kicks ass.
-
As a person who has played all but 11, here is my "short" overview.
I- What you'd expect from an RPG from the 80s: simple and fun. It was fun seeing what stats each character would raise and hoping my Warrior would FINALLY out-health my White Mage. -_-
II- Do not want! Never finished it, fairly boring, IMO. Cool thing was the neat characters.
III- Never finished, played DS version. It was alright, but not my cop of tea.
IV- A great game in every respect, it was just one of the last ones I played, so I don't hold it as high in regard to the later ones.
V- This game is FUN. Absolute FUN. Don't play for the story, but I think Faris and his relation with Lenna are a nice twist. ~_^
VI- Holy yes. In the Top 3 FF's but where it stands, I dunno
VII- Overrated to holy hell, but still can be pretty damn fun. Too bad its overrated.
VIII- One of my Top 3. The first I played, so its the one I have a special attachment to. This is the game that got me hooked on FF.
IX- Probably the best. What is beautiful about IX is how well it has aged. Upon release, IX was like VII's disfigured step-sister with ADD, according to most fans. Now, most fans hold it as one of the greatest. :) I've always loved IX, it was the first FF I ever completed, although I have never beat Ozma. :( (I need to rebuy the game, my game is ruined :()
X- Ewww….
XII- Just shy of the Top 4, XII is ridiculously fun, if you play an ECC. Like V, play for the gaemplay, not the story.
Tactics- /topic BEST GAEM EVER
-
I think I'll be the one person out there who liked Final Fantasy II.
Teach Firion and Guy White Magic. Teach Maria (and later Leon) Black Magic. Give Firion double swords, Maria a bow, Guy a shield with nothing in the other hand, and Leon either double spears, double axes, or a spear and an axe.
Firion should be a secondary fighter OR secondary healer (depends on whether healing is really needed). Maria should do primary damage with her spells. Guy should always heal. Whoever you have on the fourth placement, use as best as you can.
-
I only dislike a few Final Fantasys as I said earlier, but does anybody else think that FF1 for the PSP was a good game because I thought it was.I have played the original one so the better graphics made the game even more fun.
-

Your counter attack story for 7 was amusing.
I'm the same. I play FF for the story and the graphics. Of course, if the gameplay SUCKS then no story can make it worthwhile to play (especially in this day and age when you can just watch the cutscenes on youtube), but at the same time if the story isn't good I lose motivation.
And while I love XII for the gameplay (no random encounters!), I also love the story. I like that it's more political than "epic/mythic."
-
While I enjoyed it a bit, Final Fantasy II has to be my least favorite. The experience system was unique, I'll admit. But, it got very frustrating at times. Though it was funny how you could hit yourself or another party member just to raise your max HP or attack. I know that it was a step forward for the series by having a cast of sentient characters as opposed to the silent party that you create. But, I feel that it was a bit of a step backwards in terms of gameplay.
I used to not like VIII. It was because I was so used to the Materia system, and the juctioning really pissed me off back when I first played it because I couldn't wrap my brain around it. I'm sure that I could appreciate it alot more if I played it now, though.
-

Oh, I'm ALL about the story, but I've played enough rpgs that at this point, I'm okay with a completley generic storyline if the game is great, but of course I prefer a good story. it comes down to 3 criteria. 1-Great story. 2-Great characters. 3-great combat system. If an RPG can hit 2 out of 3 for me, then its a winner, and if it hits all 3 criteria, then its a great game.
Star Ocean 2 has a TERRIBLE story, but great gameplay and characters, and I loved it. Dragon Warrior tends to have great story and characters, but meh gameplay, (cause they've been using the exacty same turn based system since the original) but they're good games. Persona 3 gets all three things right and I'm 120 hours into it and still don't want it to stop. Brave Story: New traveler despite its pretty graphics only has character, so it fails. Every game in the Tales series has gameplay and character, but usually a pretty lousy story.
Some of the final fantasies have lackluster story but great gameplay, and some have the exact opposite. If a game gets 2 out of 3, I'm there. (FF10 lacked characters AND gameplay, and the story was meh, so it loses)
4, 6 and 9 are my favorites because they get story, character, AND gameplay. 7, 8, 12 and X-2 all get 2.5 out of 3, hitting and missing in different spots but not quite nailing it all for me. 2, 3, 5 and 10 pretty much fail in story AND character, by default making the gameplay their best feature, but 2 and 10 miss the boat on even that.
Still, pretty good track record, all in all. I keep playing the things after all. And yes, you should check out FF4, the story is GREAT on that one.
-
oh, I totallly agree. I will totally enjoy any RPG until I have to go roaming around and doing leveling. I don't mean a bit, I mean hours and hours. This has prevented me from finishing several older RPG's. Usually right before the last boss too. I just give up. :P
-
I completely agree Persona 3 the greatest, especially if you can beat the Reaper.
-
And while I love XII for the gameplay (no random encounters!), I also love the story. I like that it's more political than "epic/mythic."
I really don't get why people who hate random encounters are so fond of XII. I don't know about you guys of course, but the usual reason for the hate is that the encounters are annoying and interruptive if you just want to get out of a dungeon/onwards in the story, and that they at any rate all can be won by "x fight".
But no other game in the series has HALF the fighting XII has. Sidequests, minigames, and 95% of the main game is spent wandering around the map killing everything that comes your way, gazing at the horizon for the next story snippet, a mere 2 hours away. The change is that you all do it pr. automatique, meaning that you have to do even less than just "pressing x".
And I for one find it extremely dull if halfway through the game I have pretty much set up the gambits and licenses that will take me through the rest without touching the controller…all I have to do is purchase the occasional new cure/self-buff magic, and make sure everyone has the latest swords.
This strategy caused me to, at an average level of fifty, beat the snot out of all 3 final forms of the last boss, without doing anything myself. Not once was any of my characters anywhere clsoe to having problems.Meanwhile, FF III destroyed me at level 50, and merely had me clinging to dear life at 60.
-
Yeah, XII has a lot of fighting in it, but it's fighting on YOUR terms. Meaning you can choose when and where you fight. In pre-XII FF the encounters can come at any time, usually when you're in a hurry to get someplace.
Maybe I haven't set up my gambits as well as you did, but I don't think it's THAT easy. (although I do think some of the hunts are harder than the bosses. I'm not looking forward to Gilgamesh)
-
Out of, 3,4,6,7,8,10, that I've played, I'd have to say that 7 was my least favorite, it seemed like a backstep compared to 6.

I haven't even played most of Final Fantasies but… I wouldn't say it's the worst but VI never did it's magic on me.
I can see what people see in it, I know it was a well made game for it's time but I haven't ever been able to bring myself to finish it. Perhaps I would think about it differently if VII hadn't been my gateway for FF games.
-
FF7, was wrecked for my by the PC port. I didn't get the PS1 version, since I didn't get a PS1 until 2003 (and a PS2 until 2008), but I had a lovely K6-2 PC with Voodoo3 card– so I was treated to a showstopping video-playback fault in the middle of disc 2 and regular crashes when I tried it later on a newer PC.
