You want One Piece to succeed so much buy numerous copies of the first book or DVD and give them away to people.
As far as I know E21's Manga isn't censored, is it?

What Viz should do is speed up the series that are popular but stick to the release schedule that the Japanese versions used for everything else.
That would mean certain series wouldn’t catch up but at least they won’t be left dragging their feet.
But I doubt they have the cash to make that a reality and the market isn’t big enough yet/big as japan.
Anyhoo I’m sure Viz wished they did a bare bones release for One Piece now.
Resizing cover images.
Changing colours everytime.
And gold tint overlay must make it more expensive to produce than, say Naruto or Bleach.
I'm finding myself asking why I'm collecting SJ. Since mid last year I've been buying the magazine every month, just for One Piece and now, in the last 5 or so issues I've bought I haven't even read that. I guess I'm buying them to collect… but that's $60 a year... Should I even bother? Oh well, I might as well keep doing it till at least Alabasta is over.
Unless you're an instant gratification type, buying the volumes seems cheaper at this point.
The series dub was still pretty god awful. My point was just that a lot of series have it much, much worse than One Piece does in the US.
Quite right. It's just sick how E21 was treated in the states.
The anime is shit anyway.
Outside censoring Hiruma's F-bombs, the series is uncensored. They pretty much kept everything, even some of the dodgier and weirder moments. That's what happens when you're an SJ Advance release.
I'm not complaining that OP is getting nothing, it's just not getting what it could get compared to other properties. Maybe it's just my bias of being a OP fan but when you see other Jump properties get respect for their sales while OP still has the weight of a horrible 4Kids dub and a release slower than many series shorter and longer, including some that run in the same magazine as it, then you wonder what went wrong.
As for the Digimon dub, I still say that the first 1.80 seasons were close with too many weird jokes, the last .20 and all of season 3 were perfect and season 4 was back to the basics thanks to a slight change in dubbers (same company, different writers)

I'd still say that editing a word that was already in English = censorship. It'd be one thing if it was a Japanese word that word that was up to translation differences…

Certainly, I wish it got faster releases, but at least we're getting it, and it seems to be doing well enough to stay in the magazine, which equates to much greater exposure than if it was a volume only release.

I'd have to disagree 100% on this. Adventure and 02 were pretty much awful in the dub, with changes in characterization that makes David Moo's Sanji seem like a perfect adaptation, and more jokes than an 80s cartoon (often inserted into very serious scenes). Tamer's dub was still pretty bad, but at least it wasn't quite as bad. I don't get why people some people praise that dub, though. It was still awful, it was just 'better than the first two series dubs'. It's kind of like praising Yu-Gi-Oh!'s dub for not being as bad as One Piece's. It was still shit.

It may be in English but it's still an F-bomb. If Hiruma used those words every few volumes it would be passible but these manga are being sold in a marketplace where little kids can go up and read them off a store bookshelf. If said kid sees the manga and their mom sees it and sees Hiruma cursing up a storm, Viz would have had a ton of problems and be forced to edit it anyway. Better to be safe than sorry.

It's strong enough to stay in the magazine but it's not strong enough to get more chapters per issue and faster manga releases. Compare how OP is doing to Naruto in that respect: Naruto is also popular enough to stay in the magazine but it has enough chapters per month to keep it bimonthly manga release akin to nearly every other series not in the magazine. Bleach too is the same boat: it was moved to the magazine but it at least gets enough chapters per month to get quite a few volumes per year out of it. My complaint is mostly that compared to those two and many other series that are more popular in volume sales in the US (off the top of my head, I saw Black Cat higher than OP sales from that chart link a few pages ago…and that's a bimonthly series and many people say it's alright at best) and get more out there while OP, while popular, is just enough to stay in the magazine but not enough to get more volume releases in a year compared to nearly anything that isn't Bo-bobo.

Yes, but in kids anime standards, it was much, much higher than a lot of the shows that were on TV in that period in dubbing quality. No episodes were cut out, the plot remained mostly the same as the Japanese story, there were many stupid comments but they really did nothing to the story outside giving us laughable lines in stupidity (yeah I know of stuff like "Mimi's Baby Brother" but since it was still early in the series that is passible…moreso I'm thinking crap like Apocalymon's monologue) and the series actually got much better by Tamers! I didn't say it was a complete carbon copy as the Japanese original nor do I say it was the greatest dub ever but compared to a lot of what was out there both before and during that period I rather have that Digimon dub compared to other dubs.

Yu-Gi-Oh's dub grows on you with a few exceptions .

Hooray! We'll be caught up with Naruto in no time! Ha ha!
...But seriously, this is fucking bullshit. Japan shouldn't be a fucking decade ahead of us. Oh well, hopefully Naruto will end one of these next few years, and when it does, One Piece will take the spotlight...
When you see the schedule like that, I highly doubt even Viz would keep it at that schedule. I think they'd sooner drop it than drag it out that long. One Piece will probably pick up speed as more series under Viz's belt finish up. And you aren't counting the anime from FUNimation becoming highly popular.
Naruto is on the cover. Big surprise.
Interviews with live action Death Note actors.
Three One Piece chapters.
thumbs up
I take it that's the first Crocodile fight?
The last chapter is the Anime Kingdom chapter thingy, but yes Luffy does get owned here.
OMG ACTULLY 2 MAYBE VIZ DOESNT SUCK WAIT YES IT DOES BUT WHO CARES BUT WHY NARUTO
ok kool
naruto,bleach,bleach,naruto,bleach
new cover plz.
We havent had luffy since feb.
You know, I'd be happy if they used a cover from YuYu Hakusho, Bo-bo-bo Bo-bo-bo-bo, or Slam Dunk also. (Yu-gi-oh! GX can go to hell.) ANYTHING to know that Viz actually CARES about SOMETHING in the magazine that isn't Naruto and Bleach. A One Piece cover would be optimal, but I could live with a cover for one of the lower-tier series. Eh, I'm beginning to wonder if One Piece won't be taken out of the magazine after Alabasta. I'm certainly starting to hope that it is.
Good ol' Bo-Bobo's been running in the magazine for a while now… has it gotten even ONE cover the entire time? I can only vaguely remember the last time YuYu Hakusho got one, and it was ages ago.
Bô^ doesn't push the magizine, Bleach and Naruto do.
By the way, all boobs are covered up by shirts.

Even Robin/Allsunday?
Yes.
Sixteen sorrowful characters.
Wow they're really tightening the lease on what can be in the magazine. I'm still surprised they haven't taken Sanji's cigarette yet. Yeah I'm going back to not bothering with the magazine anymore.
Question: Are Crocodile's attacks kept in Spanish, Italian, etc, or do they translate them into English? I'm asking because in Unlimited Adventure they were, as far as I can recall, fully translated, and we know how Viz seems to be swayed by the dub's translation.
Desert Spada was used.
@Yuugi's:
Desert Spada was used.
Not enough….....
Well, I'm sure every other name was kept.
But wasn't Desert Spada the name for the attack used in the Japanese also?
Does it really matter,I mean you've already read it with the spanish type word, now its englishified so…
Hopfully this three chapters pattern will continue. It's not a huge improvement, but still more than two.

You're just messing with us, right? If so, end the joke here. There's no reason they should start editing the artwork on things they never edited before, especially cause that was 4kids edits and their dub has been dead for a year.
I don't believe ya, sorry. But if they are gonna start heavily editing the One Piece artwork, then that's it, I'm done buying the magazine. I don't even read em anymore, not even One Piece, I'm mainly buying them for collective purposes. So this is just an excuse for me to save money.
Amazon has shipped my copy of vol 19. I should get it tomorrow. I also got my copy of the first Zelda manga today.

Wait… what?
Damn that’s earlier than expected and I haven’t got the cash.
Hm, if they keep up with the three chapters, they should finish volume 20 in December, and provided it stays in the magazine, Alabasta two-thirds of the way through 2009.

Well, it's an improvement, at least… Still not a good release-schedule, but at least better than 2 chapters a month.
Nope, even Bleach looses their boobs.
I know they've been editing the boobs in Bleach, but I thought they were leaving One Piece alone.
^
LOLWUT?!
What boobs are being edited and why?

It's really just the cleavage, making the busty girls wear undershirts. They can't make the boobs noticeably smaller.
You know the prime suspects, ummm Orihime and Matsumono(sp? the one that hangs out with Hitsugaya).
You mean like the Bleach anime did :getlost:
I hated that especially since it carried over to the videos games AND ALL OFFICIAL PRODUCTS EXCEPT BLEACH DS!

That is the lamest thing I've ever heard. Viz is fucking terrible. Always have been always will be.
I don't see the big deal
It wasn't a big deal, but now they're doing it to One Piece. Editing Oda's art is a no no.
I thought this was old news: the magazine is censored but the actual volume release is uncensored. I wish it wasn't this way but I guess Viz's feelings are sadly "kids read this and we don't want to expose them to cleavage". I don't like it but I sort of understand why they're doing this.
I never noticed cleavage being edited in the magazine before tho, it must have just started this month. Which begs the question "why?" It was a 4kids edit, which ended over a year ago, and even in 4kids age they didn't edit it.
At least the volumes aren't cencored…. I wonder if they would make Ms. Doublefinger wear a top.
I don't see the big deal
Art censorship is always a big deal.
It's just another way that Viz continues to get worse and worse.
I'm not saying 'OMG less bewbs = end of da werld!!!!1!!!1shift1', but it's definitely a lame move on Viz's part. Though, as long as the volumes are uncensored (which isn't always the case with Viz), it doesn't really affect me too much.
Vol 19 arrived today :)
Soooo what OMG you don't see cleavage. I dont care if they censor the magazine because there are different standard of what you can show and cant. I don't see why it matters then go complain to viz to make a uncensored edition to the magazine

By that same logic so is editing the art of any other manga-ka that's had his art edited in anything published in places like the United States.
