But that happened in The Batman albeit temporarily.
Dragonball: Evolution (Live-Action Movie)

But no krillin disturbs me. They have YAMCHA, but not krillin. >_>
Yamcha came first. And after DragonBall he's pretty useless even compared to Kuririn. So best to give him his time in the spotlight as Goku's friend/backup before then, I figure.
-
And why is everyone "who loves dragonball" okay with this movie?
Probably because we don't give enough of a shit about something we knew would make fans around the world angry no matter WHAT it was and don't want to be associated with that level of fanboyism.
-
And no, Greg, it's not that the plot isn't exactly like the original, it's the plot in general.
I'm so sick of fake high school BS, that they keep showing in movies. >_> All the plot seems like is… "she's all that" but with Goku as the "she". :/
I changed the post to fit the situation. That quote your using is old greg, I went into more specific's of what I meant.
I'm gonna give this movie a chance, but movie's that try to give that "this is what High school is like" crap is usually bull.
I really, really don't want a generic story X dragonball .
-
That fan-made trailer was truly something. If it was a real trailer it'd be pretty crap, but it's impressive to think someone just made that on their computer in their free time.
-
Its not like it would have been hard to keep Goku a boy living alone in the mountains who doesn't know anything about the rest of the world, except for what his grandpa told him.
-
Hard to do? Nope. Hard to find an audience? Oh, hell yeah. This is something fanboys always do wrong, yes, we want everything true to the source and we want it GOOD! But fanboys/fangirls tend to think they are a force to be reckoned with, and that they can go SEE this movie that was made FOR THEM enough to turn the films multi-million dollar budget over.
No, we can't. Anime fans are a small clique. You gotta depend on the general movie goer, and we can still have a great movie for both parties, such as the comic book movies in recent years.
-
"Angsty?" Since when? Did I miss something telling us he was unhappy or emo or angry at the world? Our first bit of news about the character cited him as "unpopular," which could carry any kind of meaning. But recently, Chatwin himself described Goku as "kind and gentle."
Looks to me like he's more likely going to be considered unpopular because he's the naive, happy-go-lucky dork who tries to help everyone, with no sense of or regard for popularity or social standing. Sounds very "Goku" to me.
Who else thinks like that, again…?
Oh yeah, that's right. 95% of DragonBall's western audience.
And if they didn't "give a shit" about the early parts of the story, then they'd have skipped right to Raditz, and we wouldn't be getting a movie featuring characters like Yamcha, Roshi, Mai, Chi-Chi, Mutaito and Piccolo Daimao at all.
They care more than enough about the early story to make a movie out of it. In fact, aside from one tiny little aspect that most people (even myself) don't like the sound of, the school, the whole thing looks very promising, and not a bad effort at all. We've got a good-old-fashioned race to gather the Dragon Balls, GokuxChi-Chi and probably BulmaxYamcha romance, Piccolo Daimao, a World Tournament, etc…
But they still know better than to spend any more time than one movie on the early portions, because they know the majority of the movie-going audience (Protip: Actual, knowledgeable DragonBall fans are an extremely small majority of that audience) knows about and wants things like Super Saiyans. It's just smart planning, and the fact that it might piss off a few picky fanboys doesn't change that.
The vibe I'm getting from this movie's look and direction so far tells me it has two main goals. To set up for one or more "DragonBall Z" sequels, and to also give a good movie itself closely based on a combination of the beginning of the manga and the Piccolo Daimao story. But "make sure it fits the fanboys' expectations" doesn't seem to be a priority.
Hey, you're quite welcome. But how'd you know I was about to post?
If you think this movie will be anything but a hilarious mess your a delusional fanboy. hth.

Aw, that's cute.
But quite the contrary, the impression I've been getting in most other places is that the more hardcore fans are the ones against the movie and think it will flop, for absolutely no reason other than it's different from the manga. I'm just trying to keep a level head about it and take it for what it is. Other superhero movies like Spider-Man and Batman have been fairly dissimilar from their comic-book counterparts, yet have been great and well-received movies. I and a lot of others realize DragonBall's treatment here is no different.

Name the dissimilarities please, because they were pretty true to their source material.
-
I know some people used to be annoyed about Spider-Man being able to shoot webs out of his arms instead of having to craft those "sci-fi" web shooters.
-
Because a squat little blue troll dressed like a clown and an anthropomorphic dog dressed like a ninja make SUCH great, menacing, impactful villains.
You seem to forget that DB was more of a mix of comedy, adventure and action. That's how current Shonen series picked up the whole 'evil villians with not necessarily menacing designs' shtick.
-

I'm not much of a Batman expert, but as for Spidey:
- "Genetically engineered super-spider" instead of radioactive.
- Organic web spinnerets in his forearms instead of mechanical webshooters.
- In the comics, Spidey's wall-climbing is done through some sort of bio-magnetism; in the movie, he's got hook-like hair things all over his skin.
- Mary Jane is his initial love interest, instead of Betty Brant or Gwen Stacy.
*Both MJ and Harry are Peter's friends in high school; in the comics, he didn't know either of them until college. - Both Norman Osborn's relation to Peter and his origins as the Green Goblin are adjusted for the movie. (But we didn't mind, because Willem Dafoe is an awesome actor and did an amazing Norman/Goblin. I'm getting the same vibe out of Marsters as Piccolo)
- After becoming Spider-Man, Peter's confidence boosted, even out-of-costume. Tobey Maguire's Peter Parker is eternally baby-faced and whiny. >_>
Just to name a few, and that's just the first movie. Same kind of things apply to the sequels, and I could go on more, but I don't feel like it. But the point is that there were a lot of tweaks to the story and characters to make it work better as a movie. Yet the movie ended up awesome and successful, and the only people I'VE ever heard complain about it are a couple certain hardcore comic fans who take the whole thing way to seriously.

Oh, you don't have to remind me. I know how awesome Pilaf is within the manga. If they were making just one movie, for kids, based on early DragonBall, then hell yeah, bring on the blue man. But he'd really be out of place in this, a more serious-taken adaptation.
-
I never really took DB to much of a 'serious series' actually ^_^;;;

Wow, that's a lot. That's what I get for not brushing up on my Spider-man
Anyways though most of those changes could be excused through the Marvel Bullshit Clause: Alternate Dimensions:blink:I've gotten over most of the changes in the DB movie, It's just the whole highschool thing that bother's me. MANY other movies have used the traveling warrior story and have been sucessful. Why not DragonBall?
I'll get over it sooner or later, but I'll keep bitching here until I do.@Tizoc:I never really took DB to much of a 'serious series' actually ^_^;;;
Neither did I. That's probably another problem I'm having with this movie.

- To the user "Zkaiser"
-Bruce was not afraid of Bats when he was still a child. (Though this concept maybe based on modern Batman.
-Alfred was not Bruce's servant all of his life. Originally he was just a retired actor who only served Bruce to fufil his fathers last wish.
-Bruce's Parents are murdered after seeing a movie and Bruce's father(Thomas Wayne) was shot differently in the abdomen in the comics. Batman Begins this version, he and Martha are murdered at gunpoint by Joe Chill, a petty criminal, after attending a performance of Mefistofele. They leave the opera early when Bruce is scared by bat-like demons onstage. Martha's pearls are heard falling, but aren't shown. Thomas is killed because he is trying to protect his wife, after Chill tries to rip off her necklace. Thomas in the comics was killed Immediately and did not try to save his wife.
Bruce gets inspiration for being Batman when he sees a random bat flying around his window. In the movie it is fear of Bats.
Plenty more differences, but I don't really feel like doing them all.
- To the user "Zkaiser"

This movie is the same.
Precisely. Thing like that are often labeled as their own separate thing, and left alone for it. Marvel even seems to be trying to set up their own "movieverse." Why can't the Dragon Ball movie be treated the same?
-
Other superhero movies like Spider-Man and Batman have been fairly dissimilar from their comic-book counterparts, yet have been great and well-received movies.
Pretty much all except Spider-Man 3 along with Batman Forever and Batman & Robin.

Yhea, half the fanboys are the type who hates everything.
Than there's the other half who will put anything with the Dragonball name on it up there anus and call it gold.Stupid optimism is every bit as bad as stupid pessism.
Now for the love of god stop pretending your some kind of magical betterman scoffing at all the "hardcores" when your exactly the fucking same except your glass of crap is half full. -
@Sandai:
Pretty much all except Spider-Man 3 along with Batman Forever and Batman & Robin.
Batman and Robin does not deserve to be mentioned within the same sentence as Spider-Man 3.
Ironically, I just did so.

I see this movie, I acknowledge it's couple of problems, but I will still accept it for what it is. And I'd rather be optimistic and end up slightly disappointed from time to time, than pessimistic and never enjoy anything in the first place. And if that optimism pisses people off, well then hey, guess I'm doing them a favor.
Yes, I AM a "hardcore" when it comes to DragonBall. Never claimed not to be. I post on DragonBall forums like crazy, do fanart, and have a running fanfiction, even. But I'm still purposefully keeping myself detached and preventing my fandom from clouding my judgment, so I can treat this movie how it should be treated. Call it superiority if you must, but as far as I'm concerned it's just (un)common sense.
Like I've already said, this movie is, on the whole, no different from any other comic book adaptation. And yes, EVEN as a big DragonBall fan, I see it that way. The same way I see the Spider-Man movies even though I grew up practically worshiping the webhead.
Plus, no, I don't immediately worship anything with DragonBall in the title. FUNimation's Remastered movies are awesome, and the Season Sets are nice solely for their episode count per price, but the horrible dub still makes me retch. Viz is in the process of releasing the Daizenshuu and have done a great job with the first one, but they've yet to impress me with a good enough release of the manga for me to collect. Broly has come to annoy me solely because he's got so many retarded fanboys. I despise the concept of numbered power levels and the stubborn imbeciles who tend to hold discussions on them at places like YouTube or MFG. Plus, I think One Piece is an overall better series.
But when it comes to the movie, all I want is to see the characters portrayed and kicking ass in live-action. I've wanted that since I became a fan, and now I'm finally getting it. If they want to put Goku in school for a minuscule fraction of the run time to do that, fine by me. It'll be interesting, even. Other people see it as crap, fine by me. Won't stop me from enjoying it.
-

Funny part is I'm not the first to ever have done that (fanboys:getlost:).

His Doukiri is over 9000! .
-
I'll despise this movie just because it takes away the fantasy feeling of a differnet world which was there with Dragonball:getlost: There better be a giant burning mountain and dinosaurs.
-
@Sandai:

Oda should've done that. Luffy should've punched Fuku in the face and Fuku should have said that. I would have died from lulz.@VL7:

That's fine, except your a hypocrite if you bash on pessimism at the same time. Oops!

And I'd rather be optimistic and end up slightly disappointed from time to time, than pessimistic and never enjoy anything in the first place. No it's not that. It's the smarmy IM SO ABOVE YOU HATERS bullshit your peeing all over the thread with.
If you were just an optimist keeping to your self instead of strutting around like some kind of retarded prostitute telling everyone off for hatin' than maybe you would be Ok.
Being as that's not the case-
Yes, I AM a "hardcore" when it comes to DragonBall.
You dumbass.
Never claimed not to be.
Well gee Hoss, in between all the "HAH FANBOYS, WHADYA GONNA DO ABOUT EM" who would have known!
I post on DragonBall forums like crazy, do fanart, and have a running fanfiction, even. But I'm still purposefully keeping myself detached and preventing my fandom from clouding my judgment,
The hell you are.
Are you really this stupidly biased that you think your optimism is clean of fanboyism in it's own right? Your so willing to assume the negativity is fanboys, but nope not you.Like I've already said, this movie is, on the whole, no different from any other comic book adaptation. And yes, EVEN as a big DragonBall fan, I see it that way. The same way I see the Spider-Man movies even though I grew up practically worshiping the webhead.
What does any of this have to do with anything.
Stop pretending all the hate is over non-faithfulness.But when it comes to the movie, all I want is to see the characters portrayed and kicking ass in live-action. You don't get to pull this "well, in my humble opinion" thign if your on the offense of others opinions.

So anyway, seems Roshi does have a beard.

5'o'clock shadow is better than nothing, I guess. Also, is that a bullet hole on his shirt?
-
Better than having no beard but he's missing his cool shades

-Bruce was not afraid of Bats when he was still a child. (Though this concept maybe based on modern Batman.
It likely is. In Batman Year One (one of the inspirations for Batman Begins) Bruce mentions how bats frightened him as a boy. I also remember a comic from the '90s that showed young Bruce get scared after he fell into a cave of bats.
-Alfred was not Bruce's servant all of his life. Originally he was just a retired actor who only served Bruce to fufil his fathers last wish.
To my knowledge this might also be based on modern Batman continuity. I remember a comic from the '90s that told how Alfred came to Wayne Manor and decided to stay as their butler. The Waynes are still alive at the time (in this story at least).
Batman Begins this version, he and Martha are murdered at gunpoint by Joe Chill, a petty criminal,
Joe Chill was the killer in the Golden Age Batman comics as well. His name wasn't revealed in the first origin story, but it was in an issue in the late 1940s.
The comics are sometimes inconsistent when it comes to Batman's origin (and not just between old and recent comics). There are probably as many differences between various comic issues as there are between the comics and the movie.
But overall, the differences seem to be mostly minor and don't significantly change Batman's character, so I don't mind.

@Dbthemovie.com:
According to Barnes and Noble, Dragonball will have its very own “Junior Novel” based upon the movie written by Ben Ramsey and James Wong. The book is being adapted by Stacia Deutsh and Rhody Cohan, and is scheduled for a February 2009 release. Published by VIZ Media LLC, the book is 152 pages in length. Amazon lists the books price at just $5.99, and they’re also taking pre-orders.Collect all seven Dragon Balls and you can wish for whatever you want!
Goku thought he was a normal high school student until he found out he’s actually a martial-arts whiz with all kinds of powers. Now he and his fellow teen warriors are on a quest to find all the Dragonballs before they fall into the wrong hands. But they may already have! Goku must battle the evil Piccolo with all he’s got to save the planet Earth!
Apparently “The Junior Novel” is only one book in a series. Three more books, “The Battle,” “The Search” and “The Discovery” can also be found on the Barnes and Noble website for $4.99 each. Each one has 77 pages and a release date of February 3rd, 2009.I'm not commenting.

Reminds me of when I bought the "Steel" Junior Novel Yea laugh it up come on.
-
STEEL?! Lol. Naw I'm kidding. I wanted a Steel action figure but my mom didn't(and still doesn't) like superheroes. Now I don't want one.

i would only by it to punch that picture of "Goku" in the face, for 5 cents

NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Generic teenage action flick!!! Is that the movie's plot?! I'm sad now…

Goku 4 Prom King! Junior 4 Valedictorian!!

What are they gonna wish for in this movie?
And is that bulma on the novel cover? I thought her hair was supposed to blue in this movie? (though that doesn't bother me much it'd just make it easier to tell who's who.)

I don't understand the bitching on this film. To me, this movie is going to be a fucking riot ! I'm going with very low expectations and I am going to this movie for the laughter and to make fun of it

Yeah its official Toriyama prob. disowned Dragonball…
-
I think the reason I have such a devil may care attitude about everything and anything DB these days is because of what the author thinks of it.
I used to be a FEROCIOUS DB fanboy that was constantly putting words into Toriyama
s mouth based on little snippits that I
d read here and there on the then young internet and from what little I could understand of the daiz. DB being the literally life-changing series that it was for me, anything Toriyama did, wrote or said instantly became God`s word and I even bent his words to my own advantage from time to time. The series was something sacred to me.Then he forgot who goddamn Tao Pai Pai was and shattered that image.
Now I
m not saying he has to remember every goddamn character, but Tao Pai Pai was a HUGE villain at the time and for Toriyama to just completely forget one of his characters? That showed me that the the series isn
t as well-constructed as I previously imagined and also that Toriyama also didnt give a damn about his series and he
s just happy that people enjoy it. Thats a nice thing I think, but it means anyone that spends any excessive time overanalyzing the series or brief lines of text and worrying about how the license is dealt with, really needs to sit the fuck down, take a deep breath, realize that DB was/is hugely influential in manga in Japan and as a series around the globe, but keep in mind, Toriyama didn
t care obssesively about the series when he was creating it, he doesn`t care about it now, and it will always be just something he did because it was work and it put food on the table.Read it, watch it, enjoy it, don
t overthink it in any medium it shows up on. It doesn
t need Toriyama`s golden semen covering it to make it official or decent or respectable. It just is what it is.The series does deserve something better than what it APPEARS we
re getting. Not because Toriyama
s work demands it, but because we as fans deserve it. But we KNEW this would be the route it would take. And getting producers to scare up cash and faces for a serious or non-bubblegum take on the series at a time when movies are struggling and costs are rising, it just isnt going to happen. So again we have another….creative....use of the license. That
s all. -
Pretty good post Greg you pretty much nailed down some proper facts that are plausible and I agree with your last paragraph.
