Go with redemption. It sounded more epic that way.
Dragonball: Evolution (Live-Action Movie)
-
-
Because you can be a fan of something and not act like a child when they alter things for a live-action adaptation.
At first, I understood why people were upset, but now it seems like everyone's getting upset over little random things. It's pretty lame.
Most of us are getting upset because at the end of the day you can see that the Dragonball manga isn't exactly live action material.
-
I'm upset because Dragonball was an epic, silly, and fun adventure series. This just looks like a generic action flick. If that's what they wanted, they shoulda went to DBZ.
-
Chi Chi is hot…...................This movie is made of fail.
-
wow. she's ahot. and a fan. o:
I'll say this, If I don't see master roshi, krillin, Tien, and yamucha. I will be angry and upset. D:
EDIT: And Bulma.
-

Then ya won't be too upset seeing as Roshi, Yamcha, and Bulma have made it into the film.
-
But no Krillin nor Tien. And of course all the silly characters are out, like Oolong and Puar.
-
That's only a small problem. I just hope there's at least some adventure aspects in the movie, though.
-
DB = DBZ. They are one in the same as far as the Manga is concerned.
-
@Yuugi's:

Not really. Toriyama added the Z because he felt the two series were radically different. If anything DB=/=DBZ.
-
Actually Toei added the Z.
-
Yeah, they ran as the same 519 chapter series in JUMP.
-
Yeah I know about the whole "Z" debate but I like to think of them as two different entities considering the focus changes completely once the Saiyans are introduced. I always loved how adventurous the franchise was in the beginning.
-
I feel dumb now. But still spiritually DB=/=DBZ.
-
A tonal shift doesn't mean a different series. All the 'Z' meant to Toriyama was that he was planning on ending the series soon.
-
Yeah I know but I can't help but to see it that way cuz of the way the anime split the franchise in two and Viz went down that same path.
-
I'm going to rip this movie a new A-hole. This is gonna be so ******* funny, and so sad at the same time.
And why is everyone "who loves dragonball" okay with this movie? Maybe they know something we don't? (OR the pay is very nice, which I assume. :D)
-
Or maybe they don't condemn an idea as quickly as asshat fanboys do? I grew up on the series and I think this movie has a chance to be good.
-

You grew up with Dragonball? Or did you grow up with DBZ? Judging by your age I'd say the latter.
My main gripe with the movie is the fact that goku is in high school. Like the traveling warrior story hasn't been done before. I would have liked to see Goku as a traveling warrior than a high school dweeb spewing out lines like "Dude, my bike!!" after a jock runs over his bike. (That's real dialogue by the way)
-
So what if it was DBZ? Wasn't the argument we just finished here that DB and DBZ is the same damn thing?
-
^you missed what he was saying. He's saying you may be a person who's never actually seen "Dragonball" as in, uncut, and without all the BS.
And no, Buuhan, it's not that the plot isn't exactly like the original, it's the plot in general.
I'm so sick of fake high school BS, that they keep showing in movies. >_> All the plot seems like is… "she's all that" but with Goku as the "she". :/
-
Or maybe they don't condemn an idea as quickly as asshat fanboys do? I grew up on the series and I think this movie has a chance to be good.
People thought Speed Racer was going to be good and looked how that turned out.
-
And people are thinking this is gonna be shit, just like Transformers. (Tho I doubt even if it is good it'll be that good.)
-
People think Spider-Man 3 & X-Men 3 were shit but the numbers told otherwise.
-
The lesson: Everyone has their own opinions and they will always vary.
-
@Sandai:
People thought Speed Racer was going to be good and looked how that turned out.
Hey, That movie was good. It delivered what it said it was going to. Speedy racing ( I actually did like the movie though)
So what if it was DBZ? Wasn't the argument we just finished here that DB and DBZ is the same damn thing?
Saying that DB is the same as DBZ is like saying that G Gundam = Gundam Wing or that tomatoes = ketchup. Same base, different product.
-
Hey, That movie was good. It delivered what it said it was going to. Speedy racing ( I actually did like the movie though)
Agreed. That movie was amazing. The critics must have sticks up their asses, or just know nothing about the original show, or something.
-
^ Its not the critics job to know the original show. Its to give there (or editors) review bias or not a movie should have knowledge enough to bring in non tv watchers.
That being said i usually dont go by what they say anyway
-
-
Chi Chi is the "it" girl who dates a jock? Lord help us.
-
It makes perfect sense considering what her name means.
-
High school huh? "It" girl dates jock huh? Goku and Chichi love martial arts huh?
While I would have preferred Goku to be a grown man, I guess I'll have to read a little bit more into it. I do believe that it has a chance though. Lets see now….
-
Well, Son was a kid for 14 of the 42 volumes of the series so…
-
@Yuugi's:
Well, Son was a kid for 14 of the 42 volumes of the series so…
Who? Gohan?
Isn't Son their surnames?
-
He meant Goku. Goku was 14 for most of early Dragonball, then he hit his growth spurt.
-
Tis true, it's just a little weird to have Goku go to school.
-
He meant Goku. Goku was 14 for most of early Dragonball, then he hit his growth spurt.
I know. I was just being difficult. I've read dragonball, so the age they have him at isn't weird. The time he fought DKP he was about 18 or somewhere around that.
It's just…He never even touched highschool in his entire life:sad: -
Yeah, I meant Gokû who was 12, 15, and 18 through out the first 16 volumes.
-
Goku was also a naive innocent simpleton in DB which I liked a lot :/
-
And what is he now? An angsty teenage dweeb.
-
The reason this movie is gonna suck is that none of the people responsible for it actually give a shit about the first 16 volumes of the manga. "Hey, lets make a half assed introduction movie for the series, add some made up stuff to make it look cooler in the eyes of the average american boy and then we can move on to the awesome flashy action parts of the series.":getlost:
-
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!
Finally someone who makes sense!!!!
-
And what is he now? An angsty teenage dweeb.
"Angsty?" Since when? Did I miss something telling us he was unhappy or emo or angry at the world? Our first bit of news about the character cited him as "unpopular," which could carry any kind of meaning. But recently, Chatwin himself described Goku as "kind and gentle."
Looks to me like he's more likely going to be considered unpopular because he's the naive, happy-go-lucky dork who tries to help everyone, with no sense of or regard for popularity or social standing. Sounds very "Goku" to me.

Who else thinks like that, again…?
Oh yeah, that's right. 95% of DragonBall's western audience.
And if they didn't "give a shit" about the early parts of the story, then they'd have skipped right to Raditz, and we wouldn't be getting a movie featuring characters like Yamcha, Roshi, Mai, Chi-Chi, Mutaito and Piccolo Daimao at all.
They care more than enough about the early story to make a movie out of it. In fact, aside from one tiny little aspect that most people (even myself) don't like the sound of, the school, the whole thing looks very promising, and not a bad effort at all. We've got a good-old-fashioned race to gather the Dragon Balls, GokuxChi-Chi and probably BulmaxYamcha romance, Piccolo Daimao, a World Tournament, etc…
But they still know better than to spend any more time than one movie on the early portions, because they know the majority of the movie-going audience (Protip: Actual, knowledgeable DragonBall fans are an extremely small majority of that audience) knows about and wants things like Super Saiyans. It's just smart planning, and the fact that it might piss off a few picky fanboys doesn't change that.
The vibe I'm getting from this movie's look and direction so far tells me it has two main goals. To set up for one or more "DragonBall Z" sequels, and to also give a good movie itself closely based on a combination of the beginning of the manga and the Piccolo Daimao story. But "make sure it fits the fanboys' expectations" doesn't seem to be a priority.
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!
Finally someone who makes sense!!!!
Hey, you're quite welcome. But how'd you know I was about to post?
-
^Goku being unpopular in high school I could definitely see. However, he most certainly shouldn't be getting picked on. Goku defended himself.
I just get this feeling that Goku is gonna be "popular", get the "most beautiful girl" in school, and then make a fool out of the Jock, all after Roshi trains him. And then win Prom King, and then have to battle the original King Piccolo over the title…
^I think Dragonball... the High School Years. :/ The last part with piccolo was a tad much, but the rest I really do see coming.
-
^Goku being unpopular in high school I could definitely see. However, he most certainly shouldn't be getting picked on. Goku defended himself.
Nothing we've heard so far says he doesn't. Just being targeted to be "picked on" doesn't automatically mean you "lose" or are a wimp. People tried to pick on me in high school every once in a while. I laughed, dropped a big word or two to confuse them, and brushed them off.
-

Yea Mai & no Shu or Pilaf oops.
-
@Sandai:
Yea Mai & no Shu or Pilaf oops.
Because a squat little blue troll dressed like a clown and an anthropomorphic dog dressed like a ninja make SUCH great, menacing, impactful villains.
Having Mai (the only relatively normal one in the trio) in there at all is already a nice nod to and acknowledgment of DragonBall's first true "villain," but making her badass and dangerous and having her as Lord Piccolo's right hand woman is just icing on the cake.
Who knows, she might even pilot a mecha at one point.
-
You can't really say they're skipping the first 16 volumes. If they didn't want that, they could have easily skipped it and made a working story for volumes 17-42. But no, they're actually doing a version of the beginning.
-
Regarding how the movie is being handled, I think this movie is turning out bad because of the demographic they are aiming for. From what I can tell they are trying to please Dragonball Z fans with a Dragonball movie. Most of the older fans of the show know nothing about Dragonball and only know DBZ. Fox feared that if they didn't please the DBZ fans that they would lose consumers for the next two sequels they have planned. So in order to please them they aged up the movie. Dragonball is lighthearted in nature and Fox has decided to remove most of the fantastic elements of the series. Oolong, Puar, Chiaotzu, Krillin and any form of talking animal have been removed from this movie. I don't know what the hell they were thinking with Chatwin's hair, I've seen better then that at MegaCon. The make up designers on this movie are munchin' on Mario's 1980's movie shrooms. This movie, after exploding at the box office, will epically FAIL. I'm seeing a matrix knock off coming to a theater near you. And not the first two. Revolutions.
!!TIME PARADOX!!
Edit:9L__-uEbTI4This looks nice though. FAN MADE.
-
Dragonball wasn't so light hearted as soon as krillin died. It went straight to hell. (In a good way)
But no krillin disturbs me. They have YAMCHA, but not krillin. >_> That's like having Batman and Batgirl, but no robin. :(
