poorly written?, whitebeard not having a beard?
You could throw Black Beard in as well. Odd to pick a name that evokes a specific image (a big black beard) when all he's got is rediculously thin facial hair.
Maybe he'll grow it out now?

Wasn't there some foreshadowing to Ashura though?
During the raid to EL, the marines commented that Zoro's blades were "bending" as he attacked him using a move.
Then during the fight with Kaku(I'm guessing), Kaku said that Zoro's aura was shaped like a demon.

The word for beard in Japanese is hige. It can mean beard, mustache, stubble… basically, any kind of facial hair. There's no distinction.
Whitebeard = Shirohige. But apparently Whitestache sounds dumb, so we call him Whitebeard. Blackbeard = Kurohige, but Blackstubble sounds even stupider.

I know, you're absolutely right. It's just odd that he chose such a name for himself. He named himself after the color of his stubble. Nice choice.
Out of curiousity though, what is Red Hair Shanks name in Japanese?
Akagami no Shanks
16 hairs of my head

Pirates (or people) don't self-appoint nicknames. A rather odd yet interesting fact, no?

Typically they dont, but in his case it seemed like he was selling this name himself.
He had no bounty to stick a nickname to. He even uses it for his induction into the Shichibukai (and I can't belive spellcheck understood Shichibukai!).

I think that Oda named him Kurohige. (besides being an obvious reference to the most romanticized pirate) to put him as an opposite of Shirohige. White and Black. He could have had Blackbeard do that to purposely mock his former commander (in character)
It's kinda like how Light Yagami (From Death Note) is Raito when his name is romanized in English, and L is エル・ローライト, Which is romanized as Eru Roraito.
This latest arc was terrible alone, really.
Really, every Author has terrible writings in their work, not just Oda.
The best example I can think of is the Skypiea arc. It may have had a lot of deepth to it but it could barley hold a lot of people's interest.

I see. Care to elaborate?

I don't criticise Oda for naming him that, because he gets to call him whatever he wants. In character though, it's odd that he would choose such a name. Although your theory on him mocking Whitebeard does make sense I suppose.
I still think it would have made more sense for him to actually have a striking growth of facial hair, but then I really do like the way he looks already. It would however be amusing to learn that he's not able to grow a thick beard at all. A very Oda like gag.

Elaborate on what? The latest arc that was written?
Yes the arc was terrible, going to save a once beaten villain and then fight duval (LOL nough said) and see some wacked out version of Street Sharks that we call Fishmen? Dude this was nothing but another rescue arc and it is simply wasting a lot of time.
The arc isn't over yet, Miracles.
sigh
I wish I didn't ask.
I believe Syrup Island is where Usopp is from.
Anyways… I definitely have things I don't like about One Piece, but it's still one of the stories I enjoy most. overall, I love the story and the whackiness as well as depth of the whole crew.
i don't know if i'd say these things have been poorly written, but things i haven't liked or cared for during the series are the way pell's sacrifice was played off, until the luffy - usopp fight, the way usopp kept pretending to be captain, the way luffy and the shp never seem to get any respect from riff-raff, though this maybe changing with luffy's "spirit" growing/expanding. i'm very hopeful for this :)
Are you saying you didn't like that part?:wassat:
For me that was the moment that I actually started to care about usopp. Before that, I didn't really like him. But that plus the robin fiasco were together such a beautiful moment in op history. So much tension. I was on the edge of my seat from that moment til the end of enies lobby.

As far as the whole WB/BB naming discussion, I think he named them that to tie them into each other.
Whitebeard's real name is Edward Newgate, which he got from the real life Blackbeard's name (Edward Teach).
Blackbeard inherited Teach's nickname and his surname. Blackbeard is Oda's favorite (real) pirate, so I'm sure it has to do with that.
I know this doesnt belong here, but I'll say it anyway, Im positive that Blackbeard will kill Whitebeard before One Piece finishes.
Just browsed through the thread again, and I'm a little surprised. I'm also of the opinion that it cheapened the story a little that both Pell and Pagaya survived, but…
Am I the only one who found Pagaya's survival worse?
At least Pell was a strong fighter. Pagaya was an ordinary citizen. Plus, not to attempt to compare the destructive power of a bomb versus lightning, but at least Pell would have had the opportunity to move away from the blast near the last instant, given that he can fly. Pagaya had no means to avoid an attack so quick.
I don't even particularly mind that either of them lived, but I find Pagaya's survival far less plausible.
My most glaring issue with One Piece is that it has to share a magazine with Bleach and Naruto.

I don't see how Pell coul've moved that fast to avoid being caught in the explosion especially when you consider the fact that he was injured.

What's wrong with that, other than your presumable dislike for Naruto & Bleach.

I dunno, that bomb was designed to wipe out an entire city, and he was less than 2 feet away from it. Pell should have been obliterated.
I tend to think to bomb is somewhat similar to Ursa Shock.
FFA-I already told him (or someone similar)-and I have to say its one of those things that should flash by under the "AP banner" as a "Frequently asked questions" or "did you know?" to make sure people wont complain when there isnt anything to complain about ,AGAIN AND AGAIN.
@Lobster:
Immagine if Arlong and his crew mates fought the Straw Hats TOGETHER. And the same with Don Kriege and any other villain. Their strategies are seriously flawed.
Luffy beat the shit out of Arlong's entire crew before taking on Arlong….TERRIBLE example LPS.
@Kitsune::

No.. GREAT EXAMPLE
Arlong should have have gone after Luffy ALONG WITH his crew instead of sitting back and watching them take him on, while getting slaughtered one by one.
Luffy was using that cow to fight with, so if Arlong had gone into the front lines with the rest of his crew, he would have been taken down as well. He's strong, but he's not that strong.
HOw?
16 Thousand Sunny's
Douriki
Gear is a tad similar to super sayan or whatever
And Lobster's reasons.
Lucci's flashback.
We barely saw any of it in the manga though.
@Impel:

Well Sanji attacked some of them as well.
Or he could have fought along side Kerobi, and Hatchi.
Or.. just done the sensible thing and gone underwater to finish off Luffy :)
Douriki
The whole manga is filled with strenght value assesments. And im not talking about the bounties.
The ranking of the barrock works members, the survival rates of the skypian priest trials and the numberings on the zombies gives us an idea about their strenght.
Douriki seems surprisingly precise. But since we didn't get to compare it to known values of the strawhats it just seems precise while it is still pretty vague.
Yeah, it was only really mentioned shortly anyway.
I think that first scene in the office was the only time in the arc.

Well, he didn't attack with Hachi and Kuroobi because they asked him not to on the basis that he'd destroy Arlong Park. As to why he didn't just kill him underwater, he was arrogant and made a mistake.

Wai are you giving him excuses?
He also could have used more of his water pressure power. He only threw some at Sunkist
Maybe Crocodile's bomb was just a bright light to divert attention….
@Lobster:

I'm not giving him excuses, I'm listing the reasons why he didn't just charge in at the get go. It's not like he decided he was too cool to fight these guys, his crew asked him not to do so for fear of him destroying Arlong Park.
hmmm hmmm hmmm. after reading on wikipedia again, that it is almost unique that noone in one piece dies and after thinking about that so many people say OP is poorly written because of that! ..
i must really ask. why do so many people want that it's not enough that evil characters have to go to jail and stuff.
why dying?
do you ever heard of the manga "Gantz"? there are people dying all the time! it's great to know that some characters could have a comeback or something in One Piece, when you read almost 300 chapters pure evil killing.
poorly written things in one piece are for example (in my opinion) the "CP9 has to lose"-fights in Enie's Lobby. it is okay, it was predictable. but it was annoying.
there are some more examples surely, but my second question is -
why can't we see over that? one piece is giving us so much fun, so unique feelings and a real exciting story. and I (storywriter myself) wish I could write stories like that myself.
(and seriously, look at naruto. i'm not bashing, but you see how worse it could be if you're not sure which way to go. and Oda is sure.)
thanks.
ow,come on,if they wouldnt loose, then they wouldnt let anyone get near the bridge.
You know, about the whole "Everyone is immortal in One Piece", I just say, why not?
Why do people have to die? If you want to see people consistently die, go watch Claymore. Most of the characters I like have already been killed off, it makes it hard to get attached to people.
Now, I will agree, some people really should have died, such as Pell. When he lived, I felt it cheapened the story a little. No big deal though, I guess, since we havent heard much from them anyway.
Pell surviving will only piss me off if he somehow affects the story and fights Whitebeard on Raftel. Otherwise no, him surviving doesn't affect me in any way except saying," Come on now, what the hell?"
Personally I didn't feel that Pell being alive took away from his actions. The significance of his action was the fact that he was willing to sacrifice himself to protect the country and Vivi. I doubt the character knew he was going to live, that in itself makes him noble. I read that Oda said that he didn't want to use death as a dramatic device and I see what he meant.
Does Pell dying or surviving make his action less than what it was?
I say no, but others have every right to disagree. What I don't like about One Piece:
Brooke's foreshadowing didn't feel too legit, I wished Oda drew an afro'd crewmate in the flashback way back when they first met Laboo (maybe he did and i missed it, so i'm sorry if I did).
Diable Jambe - wish there was an explanation as to when he learned it, not how it works, but why he didn't use it earlier if he knew it.
Gear 2nd and 3nd - too much detrimental effects to be considered a powerup.go one piece:wub:
I agree to the points you made about Pell and Gear 2nd+3rd. However, I must disagree to your points about Sanji and Brook, but I understand your feelings.
Brook's appearance in Laboon's earlier flashback would have been too obvious…how can you miss an 8 foot tall man skinny like bones with an afro? I think the fact that Brook even knew Laboon and later revealed he had a deep relationship with Laboon was a great plot twist to One Piece. Laboon considered him to be one of his own because of his afro, being large and black and all and Brook's initial decision to cheer Laboon up during the first encounter with them was absolutely critical to the dream Brook had to achieve. If Oda revealed him in the first Laboon flashback, even slightly (like his back was shown or whatever), it would have probably have not the same effect as it did when we first meet Brook because his body is so recognizable an avid fan would have pointed it out early and ruined it for everyone.
Sanji's attack style is focused on his legs, as we all know, but he has to limit himself all the time. As said by Zeff when we first meet him, Sanji puts a lot of strain on his legs and his body that when fighting he tends to hurt himself as much as the enemy, even if the enemy does not do as much damage that he can resist. Simply put, his legs are so strong compared to his body, his body has trouble keeping up with the forces he puts out. That being said, he knew the Diable Jambe technique a long time ago, but only saved it for occasions where the enemy was stronger than usual; i.e. versus Jyabura's Tekkai and Oz's attacks. Not only that, it was probably a technique only Sanji could have created, because with Zeff's missing leg there is no way he could have shown it to him, or even told him about. Besides, it goes with Sanji's "spinning" behavior he recently keeps bringing up, and that is further complemented by his signature eyebrow.

Can't find anything about Zeff saying it…
Chapter 100 was the most poorly written chapter in the whole series…It's like he rushed everything at once..
Can't find anything about Zeff saying it…
I think he's talking about the commentary during the Gin fight. Because of the damage he had taken during the Pearl fight, Sanji had reached the limit of his endurance. Every blow he delivered to Gin was causing him more pain that it was dishing out. That's why Gin was able to easily beat the tar out of Sanji and nearly kill him.
He's gotten better. The Kurei fight was a big step up. The Jyabura and Kuroobi fights didn't help his development because they were short, the first simply because Kuroobi was weak out of water, and the second because Sanji pulled a power-up out of his butt because he was pissed Jyabura tried to lie about being Robin's brother. The Absalom fight… was stupid, to say the least.
