I just watch them for the nostalgia value. Like someone said, it's quite funny to watch movies and notice stuff you couldn't as a kid.

I agree with Kaimei. I watch older(and sometimes more recent) Disney movies a lot for those reasons.

So do I. I was watching the classics from a torrent over my winter break. When I saw Pinocchio again, I never realized how much of pervert and dick Jiminy Cricket came across as when I was a kid.

We forgot this one ;)

^ Haha.
I remember some people claiming that Disney stole from Hideaki Anno when they did Atlantis. I seriously doubt that.
And I could go into the whole Kimba/The Lion King fiasco. But, I'd rather not.
-
@Cap'n:
I just watched the intro… and it looks exactly the same. Haha, I probably should check this out
If I can manage to find it anywhere .__.

^Looks like a good anime actually. Might be interesting.

Nadia is a good show.
-
They both borrowed a bunch of ideas from the same various places in regards to their storylines, so the Atlantis/Nadia controversy is pretty silly if you ask me. The Lion King one has some validity, but this one doesn't.
On the topic of Atlantis here's my two cents:
Great first act, great designs and good character interaction.
Then they got to Atlantis and it's like "ok…....now what the hell do we do?" And it's there that the movie falls apart.
It was also cursed by coming out in the early 2000s, a time period where animated adventure films didn't do well at all, and nobody cared to go see them. Atlantis, Treasure Planet, Final Fantasy TSW, Titan AE, Sinbad, all bombed.
-
There's always the ol' Lion King ripped off Kimba the White Lion thing.
And why are people embarrassed to buy Disney? I will proudly walk out of any store with a classic Disney DVD.
-
You have a vagina.
-
@Senshi:
In my earlier post, I said that whenever I consider buying a Disney DVD, I feel a bit insecure about my maturity and walk away. I didn't want to come across as a "Giant fag" as Carter said. But, I went through with it.
You could always tell the cashier you're getting it as a gift or such for your younger relatives :V
BTW are we still on the whole 'Lion King is a Kimba rip-off'?
Anyway I e-mailed my bro with 'links' to try and get all eps. of Chip n' Dale Rescue Rangers and Darkwing Duck, and fuck the haters those 2 shows were one of the many shows I watched as a kid and learned english from.
-
As I've said before, the only thing that bothers me about the Lion King thing is how Disney's stance was supposedely:
"no we've never heard of the show ever, never once in our life, nope not at all"
even though there is evidence that some of the people working on it knew about Kimba.
The actual borrowing of character designs doesn't bother me at all though. I just consider it inspiration. Tezuka did the same thing himself.
As for Atlantis and Nadia…all I know is that Nadia is better.
-
Atlantis was pretty good until about midway when it started turning to shit. Or maybe it was shit the entire time but I didn't realize it until half way in. Regardless, shit.
oh is ratatouille any good? I've been meaning to check it out.

Ah yes, Atlantis. Personally, I think the most underrated Disney movie, and perhaps the most underated animated movie (that or Titan A.E.) of our time. I actually thought it was great the whole way through. It had great characters, an interesting art style, and a killer final battle.
As for the Atlantis/Nadia debate, I've never seen Nadia (and I call myself an anime fan:sad:) so I can't say anything. And it's not like Atlantis became popular so who really cares.
Oh, and as far as Lion King/Kimba, don't forget that even if Disney did borrow from Kimba, they borrowed even more from Hamlet.
-

Yes, Ratatouille is one of the best movies Pixar has made. Well, at least that's this humble animation-afficionado's opinion.
Sorry for the double post.

Man, too bad I actually enjoyed all those movies except that FF one… that was just...eh. I wish Don Bluth would make more movies, I always loved those as a kid T^T
And speaking of Nadia, I really want to watch that series, I've heard of it for so long, but for some reason never picked it up. I even remember seeing the ooold dubs in stores before ADV picked it up....
Also, yes, Ratatouille was very enjoyable! It was very cute and I liked most of the characters.
-
Sheesh, I really enjoyed Atlantis, and Treasure Planet. I honestly don't know anyone who disliked those movies either. Atlantis is possibly one of my favorite newer Disney films. Sinbad was a bit "meh" for me.
What is this Lion King controversy? I was never aware of this, or the silly Nadia comparison.
Watches Nadia opening to see what all the bitching's about
Hmm, they are somewhat similar…
-
I don't think Disney "ripped off" of Nadia. Both that, and Atlantis use elements and ideas from Jules Vernes' "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea". I've never read said book, but Nadia was sort of a re-telling of the entire story.
I saw part of Atlantis on the Disney channel once. Though I barely remember anything about it.

I have Volumes 1 + 2 of Darkwing Duck, and Volumes 1 of Duck Tales and Rescue Rangers. I really want to buy the Gummi Bear Boxset.
-
@Mr.:

Basically, some of the characters and scenes from the Lion King are very similar to Osamu Tezuka's Jungle Emperor Leo (known as Kimba the White Lion in the U.S.)
The stories are mostly different though.
-
@Cap'n:

It's silly to say it's embarrasing for a man to buy a Disney film. Now, if it were a piece of crap like the Underdog movie, I'd understand. That would be embarrasing for anyone. But being embarrased to buy The Great Mouse Detective? That's what a dumb teen would do. It's a great movie.
I rewatched TGMD btw. Truely an underappreciated classic. Rattigan was good, but I'm not as crazy for him as most of you guys.
-
AWB lashes out .
-
Eh, I got my keyboard fixed at last. Just trying to get some stuff off my chest I've had for the past six days.
Forgot to mention that I rewatched Alice in Wonderland. God, was it a boring piece of junk.
-
Back at my middle school, I still remember how a girl was mocked by other girls because she enjoyed way too much to watch Disney movies and the likes…
Of course, kids are pretty inmature, but..
She is still pretty inmature for what I've heard trough an ex-classmate who frequents the same Pool I do.
Anyways, as long as you're not Obsessed, I don't see why you should allow any dumbass to mess up with you for such an insignificant reason.
-
@AWB:

Well, he was voiced by Vincent Price. That makes him awesome right off the bat. Oh, speaking of bats, that bat in the movie scared me as a kid.
-
I buy all my disney movies online since they are cheaper

Really? I enjoyed rewatching it.
I especially liked the walrus and the carpenter for some reason.

Why are all of the sequals bad?
for almost every Disney movie?
I heard that in "Atlantis 2: Milo's Return" they accidentally put it in modern times, and forgot that the characters from last one became rich.
-

I actually wrote a school report on the similarities between The Lion King and Kimba once.

have no clue.
anyways charter didgital guides says tomorrow on toon disney its Bambi II
and, Disney channel is aring for the monday movie is Jungle Book 2,never seen thesesequels -
Hey it's the evil lion with an eye injury and the comic relief hyenas.
-
How can they deny it when the names "Kimba" and "Simba" sound so similar
Was this all just a huge coincidence?
Did Kimba the White Lion ever get an American DVD release?
-

Yeah, I've only seen one of the sequels, and that was Return of Jafar. I heard that every other sequel isn't worth watching. Besides, I've heard some awful things about some of them, and the previews for them have me going "….What? Why did they do this?".
-
Return of Jafar was only good because of this dude
-
@Lobster:

Well, I think "simba" is an actual word for "lion" in some language (and that word is where they got "Kimba" when they were giving Leo a new name in the english version).
Was this all just a huge coincidence?
If the book I'm quoting from is accurate -
According to a Disney spokesman:
"None of the principals involved in creating The Lion King were aware of Kimba or [Osamu] Tezuka."
Another statement from Disney:
"No one associated with The Lion King has ever heard of Kimba or seen it."
But several animators who worked on the Lion King (including a Japanese animator) are said to have been fans of both Kimba and Tezuka.
And supposedely Matthew Broderick once said he thought he was originally voicing Kimba the White Lion in a remake (and said he saw Kimba as a kid).

Well, "simba" is Swahili for "lion," so Kimba's name could have just been a play off of that. Some early concept art for The Lion King actually shows Simba with white fur though, so…
I think that Kimba did get a DVD box set release eventually, but I got that screencap from one of those crappy one dollar DVDs you find at Wal-Mart.
edit: graagh captain kuro
-
Yes, Kimba did get a DVD release.
-

Some people actually think that Lion King started as a remake of Kimba but then became it's own movie (so some elements of Kimba were left over).
However, that's just speculation, but I still think it's interesting.
-
I've actually read some long theory suggesting that Walt Disney had a counterpart in Japan. They had the ability to swap bodies back and forth almost instantaneously. That's why he can still maintain his frozen body.
(we read it at school)
It was pretty interesting
Yet another unsolved mystery
-
lol i was in half price books looking at the kids dvds and some kid asked me if i was buying them for my daughter
And I just realized who else Vincent Prince plays, and it had been bugging me for a few months now

I actually have that movie on my iPod. It's the recobbled version, unlike the one that was shown in theatres (Tack didn't talk, the thief was completely silent, and no musical numbers). Vincent Price was awesome as Zig Zag.
-
I've been waiting for the mark III verson of that film to come out for awhile now so I can show it to my animation teacher

what movie is this?O.o
-
It's "The Thief and the Cobbler". It was a movie done by Richard Williams, the same guy behind "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?". He didn't finish by the deadline, so he was fired fromt the project. The movie bombed, and was labeled as a cheap Aladdin rip-off, or at least that's what I heard.
-
he spent 25 years making it
some animatiors believe it's the highest quality animation ever produced, at least the parts that were made by him. :/ Imagine a miyazaki film with bits and pieces animated/written by the yugioh GX studio
if you ever watch the version you can buy, it's pretty much the gayest thing ever

I remember we owned the VHS of the crappy version when I was a kid. After finding out about the parts that weren't originally in there, it made sense to me why those scenes were so out of place. And why the main characters liked to keep talking when their mouths never moved.
-
I saw that when I was little and didn't really like it (save for granddaddy zig zag)
But now, after watching that trailer it looks simply amazing. Definitely a masterpiece.
