I really don't have time to respond tonight but thought at least I'd say this. I'm not talking about Shonen Jump in any way. I'm talking strictly about animation and base of fans on the internet.Which makes perfect sense as we all know how much higher Naruto's ratings are on Cartoon Network than One Piece's has been. Oh, wait, silly me, Naruto hasn't aired yet in the United States. So there's no way to compare the popularity of the two animated series.
On the other hand, we can compare the two in print. Where graphic novels are concerned, last I heard, Naruto outsells One Piece (which is solid, but not spectacular performer), so it's more popular.
And most companies couldn't care less about the internet fanbase, so long as they don't think those fans are violating copyright law.
Why did you say this?
Well, let's see… the first was in reference to the quality of the DVDs themselves while the second was in reference to sales numbers. Basically, I think that Funimation will do a good job with the disks, but I'm not convinced that those disks will sell very well regardless of quality because the One Piece fanbase isn't there yet. Hopefully Toonami will be able to build it.
So, not really seeing a contradiction there.
-
In the end it's always Omae vs. Ubiq..

**Glory?
Son, I wouldn't compare them grainy pics to a real live tankouban.

OP has been airing on the UK Toonami for two weeks now… but most people who watch Toonami here are Pokemon die-hards so it could do well.
What ARE the chances of FUNimation getting One Piece? I mean really, it's not going to happen. FUNi got DBZ off Saban because they were collaborating with them and Saban couldn't support itself financially anymore.
-
Okay, it took me about a hour to go through all these and I may not have this whole conversation in sequence or quoted by whoever said what so bear with me.
First off, someone said that Adult Swim is breaking off from CN, at least I think that's what they said. If so, that would be most awesome. But is it true?
Second, I know the 4kids version is horrible next to the real thing, but how else are you going to break into the mainstream? I think of the 4kids version as a kind of scout that attracts the slightly more intelligent child watching sat morning cartoons, who in turn does the research to find the real thing. I was introduced to anime by Sci-Fi's anime theater all those years ago. They were showing "Tenchi in Love" dubbed, and while it's not a masterpiece, it was enough to spark the flame. I got into OP THROUGH 4KIDS! I'm not ashamed to say it. Since then I've read up to about 190 something chapters in two weeks. It's addictive.
What I'm saying is, 4kids does inadvertantly serve our purposes of exposing people to OP.Third, I agree with whoever said that Toonami can handle this kind of show better. I think it will do as well as any other import they've gotten that was dubbed. YYH, Inuyasha, Kenshin, heck Tenchi did pretty well too. You didn't see any merchandise for Inuyasha until Toonami got it, so it must have raised enough awareness in the states to garner it. Personally I'm looking forward to it. If you cast a net in a fuller ocean, you may reel in a lot more disinterested kids, but you'll also hit a lot more interested ones too.
Fourth, Toonami is generally seen as a more "sophisticated" line-up for "more mature" audiences than 4-kids. That alone may help bring OP into better standing.
And yes, no matter what happens, the manga will still remain the written word, you can always go back to that when it gets too crazy.
But that's just my opinion.
Cheers! -
that thing about adult swim breaking off is not true…
what happened was when the monthloy ratings in Adult Swim will be considered a different channel then Cartoon Network but it's still being aired on CN -
FMA is on Adult Swim, which means that it's for "ADULTS'. I know that it was for all ages in Japan, but like I said before, "Japanese kids have brains and are advanced".
While they play Tetris and Puyo Puyo are ignorant kids are playing Grand Theft Auto.sniff sniff
I smell a troll.
Anyway…
Thus far OP in the US has been a failure. For OP fans.
I'm not talking about ratings, I'm talking about failing the people who have loved and long wanted to support the series. I may be against bitching about the company and pointing out edits that I think are dumb (because we all knew that was going to happen so what is the point?) but I sure as hell am not about to say I'm 'happy' with what they've done so far. Which is why I'm saying, wait for the DVD release to see if they can fully redeem the inevitably embarassing dub.
Which makes perfect sense as we all know how much higher Naruto's ratings are on Cartoon Network than One Piece's has been. Oh, wait, silly me, Naruto hasn't aired yet in the United States. So there's no way to compare the popularity of the two animated series.
again checks own post to see where he made mention of ratings
Nope, never mentioned ratings. That means I can only be referring to one other medium. The Internet obviously. # US Naruto fans (no matter what you think of them) > # US OP fans.
-
**sniff sniff
I smell a troll.**
I agree.
Anyway, as for buying the tankoban, I'd rather not spend my money and fill my bookshelf with books I can't read.
Annnd… I don't really have anything else to say about OP's future in America, we'll just see.

Funimation may or may not release uncut DVDs of One Piece at the same time as cut DVDs (they do that with Dragon Ball Z), but the series has to first show that its fanbase will support two seperate DVD releases.
It's possible that's why the show isn't already out on DVD as they're waiting to see how it does on Cartoon Network first.

What happened to animation?
And how is the number of fans either series has on the internet even remotely important?
The only fans that matter to a corporation are those that support a product by buying them or those that organize a large-scale boycott of their product. At best, the internet is a free focus group that suggests something might be popular if it's released in the US.
Naruto's fans are more willing to spend money on it in the US than One Piece fans.

Dammit, Roman, let it go! I deleted the first post of that, thinking you would get the message, but obviously, you didn't get it. Your warning level just got kicked up a notch.

A guy at my local Comic shop once said that everyone who buys anime should have to show their I.D. I agree with this completely. Did any of you see that post on ANN about someone who had to show some I.D in order to buy the Inuyasha manga?
I'm taping Juan Piece (thats how 4Kids say it) on Toonami so that my 23 year old friend at my local Game store can see the horror and help me get One Piece into the Hands of FUNimation or Bang Zoom!,so that it will get the "Mature" treatment that it deserves. Also the thought of Sabat playing Zoro and Nadolny as Luffy makes me smile. I have decided to become a missionary for One Piece. I plan on having around 2,000 people who will ban with my friend and I and save One Piece. My friend already told me that after watching the dubs that he will have a talk with 4Kids. This friend of mine has no life outside of One Piece and is also the guy that got me into the One Piece anime through his Hong Kong fansubs. I have already found some people at Boarders who are aware of what Viz have done to One Piece. I have also told some people to not buy Viz Jump titles. I will be trying to ask 4Kids if they will give One Piece to FUNimation if I can get 2,000 or more people to call them up and complain about the handling of the series. Will any of you help me save One Piece and help me reach my goal of 2,000 people to call them up and complain about thier kiddy and ignorant treatment of Oda's masterpiece. If Narutards have power over the Naruto dub ( which all 30 billion of them will) than why can't we have power over are passion, are love, are hobby and are dreams…....................One Piece.
Thank you for reading this and please help me out. I hope you now understand why I feel the way I do about anime and One Piece.
-
Do what you want Viz….....Do what you want.....

Hell, I'd do a lot to have FUNI take OP, but VizHater's views are just wrong. I'd wouldn't mind if kids still watched it, it's a free friggin' country, not a dictatorship.
-
clears his throat Well, after the first 5 minutes of watching the premiere tonight, it appears that not only did Toonami not change anything, but they managed to keep the annoying rap opening in. In fact, the only difference is the intro to the show that Toonami does for all of their shows.
And no, this does not give anyone the chance to spout illogical statements.

dang….I was really hoping that Toonami would have at least tried…
Awww man, it's even in the credits...at least with 4kids they spared us that...
-
Kind of ridiculous. It is on at 10pm and they still have all the edits for a morning cartoon.

I wonder how it did in the ratings…
-
Yeah, it was the same old crap that was on Fox. I was kind of half expecting the same thing but I really wanted to be wrong and then we'd get less stupid edits. But no, that had to be shot to Hell.
And the rap opening is still there. They're just torturing us with it now, it's ridiculous.
-
The only thing different about the Toonami airings was that Shonen Jump's part in the title, was edited off, we heard the end credits music, and finally you can read them. And I'm not sure if Viz Hater deserves the following thing, Insipred by the easy contests I watch on 4kids tv this Saturday for One Piece and the exclusive Tri-state $4,000 givaway. A) Support him in his cause. B)Give him a good old fashion "beat the crap outta him" treatment. or C) ignore him hoping that he dissapears from our lives.
-
I checked the schedule. One Piece is on for an hour next week too. I wonder if it is going to be like this every week and eventually pass where fox is.
-
Well, it doubles the chances if its a hit or to gets taken off the late Saturday night spot. Showing more episodes shows faster results, basicly.
-
I hate to say I told you so…but...

Well all of Toonami's shows these days are of a saturday morning calibur….
-
Er, neither Kenshin or GitS had guns replaced by super soakers.
I like the hour thing. It kinda forces people to catch some of it.
-
I don't get dub OP (YET), but I did watch a clip out of morbid curiosity. Sanji's dub voice is going to haunt my nightmares forever. I really think 4kids are going way out of their way to make it purposely bad. What were they thinking when they chose Sanji's voice?
4kids guy: Hey…this Sanji guy seems pretty slick. I know! Let's give him the most retarded and unbearable voice in the universe! That seems like the logical thing to do!
I'm sad to hear there are no changes for Toonami. Maybe it's time for a petition/letter bomb?
-

I seriously doubt that a petition will change anything. 4kids has mutilated One Piece with its dub and nothing can be done to stop it. It's like a monster feeding on all the angered fans of One Piece.

They aired Duckman?! Awesome.
But yeah, Cartoon Network has seriously gone downhill in the past few years (apart from Adult Swim). They used to show awesome shows like Batman, 2 Stupid Dogs, Freakazoid!, and a ton of Looney Tunes/Hanna Barbera classics. Now it's all new garbage, it's amazing to see how America hardly puts any real effort into their animation anymore. Also, half of CN's schedule seems to be leftover crap from Kids WB! and other stations (such as Atomic Betty and Totally Spies).
And I love anime, but CN has been overdoing it in my opinion. It'd be nice to see some American shows every once and a while (one that DOESN'T shamelessly copy the Japanese style, aka Teen Titans and Totally Spies).

Gits was never on Toonami, strictly AS.
I'm really not that surprised by the lack of changes, and an hour next week? Seems like they're trying their darndest to make this Japanese mega-hit…...into a hit.
Well it isn't working hombres, and I wonder WHY!

**Not all petitions work, but I remember awhile back that Viz started to release edited Dragonball Z manga, and that got a lot of fans into a fit. They started a petition, and then Viz started releasing it unedited again. So there is a chance it might work.
Though 4kids don't seem to be a smart company, making OP unwatchable (what kid would enjoy a show where pirates point cork guns at each other?), and pissing off fans (purposely it seems).

Just more colorfully….Boy, I wish J-rev was up right now.

.. Even if the dub was good… Kids proboally still won't watch it as much as pokemon or yugioh...
True. Damn, kids are stupid these days. I would've loved One Piece as a kid, much more than Yu-Gi-Oh.
Boy, I wish J-rev was up right now.
Same here, Zeph.

And you gotta remember that these days it's really hard to get a cartoon as popular as Pokemon was in it's prime.. Times have changed… These days kids are too busy being gangsters or acting like one for them to be looking at cartoons...To them... CARTOONS=GAY no matter what it is. Times have certinly gone downhill..

As a aspiring cartoonist, I really hate to heard that. But sadly you got a point. America seems to have it grounded in their heads somewhere that cartoons are strictly for kids save for some very few exceptions (Simpson, Family Guy,etc…) and thats its a genre rather a media. This is the reason why One Piece is the way it is down here and why our compliants fall on deaf ears. Still though I hope the Toonami move at least gets some exposure to the masses despite not being in its true form. Until then theres always the manga.
