@Quexinos:
Al Kahn is just pissed off and jealous of the success of anime that isn't dubbed by 4Kids.
Kinda agree with you, kind don't. He worked on "Pokemon", the most successful anime in America (although I'm sure he's unhappy that it's making a resurgence without his help), then he went on to "Yu-Gi-Oh!" which also became very successful. To him his business is better than the typical anime releaser, and the fact that alot of his recent anime acquisitions haven't met his expectations makes him think anime isn't working much anymore, not the other way around. The "Naruto" T.V dub, being a huge success without changing the music or the script much, is an exception in his mind.
But really, he's just being a businessman and trying to make his product look good, trying to set an example when he makes his claims at ICv2. He thinks merchandise is a key factor, whereas a lot of anime and manga companies think it's just a supplement to successful content. But overall I don't think he's a bad guy, just very blunt and biased. Although I'd like to know how he'd react if he sees "Unlimited Adventure" and the "One Piece" uncut DVDs selling better than the products he put out.
Funny thing, I remember at last year's ICv2 conference, Al Kahn with "Pokemon", "Yu-Gi-Oh!", "One Piece", and "Naruto" out in America, there really wasn't any big merchandise-worthy series to look at in Japan, so 4Kids would focus more on original series. Wait at a minute, I thought, what about "Sgt. Frog" (this was before ADV licensed it)? That's a very popular anime that's more kid-friendly than some of the other anime 4Kids licensed recently, and it's known for being the source of gobs of merchandise. Then it hit me, if 4Kids really passed up on it, perhaps it was because the show is known for being full of Japanese cultural references and jokes that are targeted towards hardcore anime fans. If ADV does it right, I could see "Sgt. Frog" being a mainstream hit in America, and knowing ADV they won't Americanize it. If that happens I'd love to see Al Kahn's reaction.
