I was starting to wonder if A1ucard was expecting some sort of document signed in Oda's blood that the english cast was choosen by him.
Any source where an official is stating that Oda approved it is fine. What is not fine is a fan stating it on a forum or Youtube video.

I think they showed that in the preview already. There wasn't any flash, but there was a little blur. I don't think the name Holy will fly, though.

What I don't get is how come I've never heard of anyone complain about bad Japanese voice acting? Is it that the language barrier makes it difficult for us to distingish what is good and bad acting, OR is it that the Japanese have a much higher standard when it comes to voice acting?
Both. I have mentioned a few times that Kappei has resorted to raspily screaming out all the emotional dialogue instead of actually acting and showing genuine emotion. Also Nami's seiyuu seems to have resorted to her normal speaking voice which sounds alot older than Nami should imho. That's why I think right now Nami's english voice is superior and…it's just easier and more believable to hear an american chick doing the pissed off bitchiness that Nami occasional does. it seems like Japanese female voices natural skew softer and more compassionate sounding either because of the language or cultural preferrences. Dub Nami does an awesome job of sounding genuinely cute one moment and totally pissed and domineering in others. Her VA is really amazing. I've been a fan since I heard her Asuna in the Negima dub.
But yeah, Japanese voice actors go to school, learn how to sing and generally the standards are wayyy higher in Japan so the voice acting as a whole is generally superior to the americans,but there are tons of exceptions. American has a growing amount of talented voice actors now,too who're on par with the Japanese guys. Steve J. Blum, Justin Cook, Yuri Lowenthal, and Luci Christina(the lady who played Tohru and Keiko right?) are among them.
Also, it's a children's comic from Japan.

I do recall being annoyed by some Japanese actors/actresses, but I can't remember any off the top of my head. I generally don't like higher-pitched voices though.
And when this manga closes out, and Luffy's arm stretches back to deliver that last punch, I wanna feel the crunch of the dream coming true.
I second the comment about Luffy's VA. It seems to go in and out. I love most of the SH's VA's especially Zoro and Sanji's. Choppers grates my ears but I guess how can it be improved? Usopp's is ok but not sure. What I find humorous is that all the non strawhats are perfect. All the villians and other voices I find perfect. Yet Luffy, Choppers, and Usopps voices just make me cringe. I love what Funi is doing with the dub it rocks so much compared to 4kids but I just can't get into some of it.
I don't mind Usopp's voice as much because Sonny's delivery usually makes me laugh out loud and his tone sounds extremely identical to both the 4kids and Kappei Yamaguchi's Usopp. Which is what i wanted. He does occasionally "phone in" some of the lines and do a mediocre job but so do the rest of the SH's, my guess is because they were in a rush.
I should mention that, the strawhats were cast AFTER the minor roles. Meaning the supporting cast had way more time to get their lines perfect than the SH's who were all still being cast while FUni was rushing to meet the CN deadline for the show to air. I'm thinking if anything, that's why they're occasionally abit weaker so far. Yeah, I agree though, the bg character so far seem to be perfect. The only SH that seems to instantly lock into her role was Nami's VA.
Why did they have to make him sound like a 12 year old when he's 17? I understand that Luffy is played by a famale voice actor in Japan, but she at least doesn't make him sound like a child.
You're hearing it wrong because of the language difference. But honestly, I've shown Japanese OP to people who dont watch subbed anime and they can always tell Luffy sounds like a hyper active 12 year old from his voice. Mayumi-san REALLY sounds like an authentic 12 yr old Japanese boy. I remember being taken back by the voice at first because I started reading the manga first and I knew Luffy was 17 yrs old, so I imagined him with a normal 17yr old sounding voice. lol! It took me a while to adjust but now I completely prefer the voice and couldnt imagine anything else!

Which means nothing pretty much. They basically went "this is okay,right?" to Oda-sensei or one of his people as a formality. ODa-sensei isn't going to veto or recommend other voice actors because he doesn't speak english and it IS just a formality. He has mentioned "approving" of the Japanese voice cast but at the same time completely disagreeing with casting choices. for one thing, he wanted Chopper to sound older and less cutesy/childish but Toei chose who THEY wanted and went with the voice tone they felt would work better with the character. And this is the Japanese production which Oda-sensei has TONS more influence and interraction with than the Funi production.
Even if Oda-sensei heard Colleen and hated the voice he isnt going to tell Funi "cast someone else or I'm taking my show away!" Besides I;m sure the comic, which he does control, is more important to him than the anime anyway.
Also, it's a children's comic from Japan.

Well true… It's just me though I just find it really awkward hearing such a high voice coming out of DBZ Goku at least. DB Goku not so much.

I guess when you dub 180 episodes in one year, you tend to overlook things like that. As far as Goku goes, I always liked Peter Kalemis. Everyone seems to hate him, but I always found that he captured Goku's immature nature perfectly. Also, he was the only one that ever did Kaioken correctly. It's kind of sad when you realize that the first DBZ movie box set starring him are still the best DBZ DVDs despite being released nearly eight years ago.
